This study mainly uses PFC (particle follow code) to simulate the void characteristics of permeable asphalt mixture, and uses these to simulate the silting process. Then, a tire drop test was used to evaluate the noise reduction performance of permeable asphalt concrete. Finally, a self-made ring rutting test machine was used to simulate the silting process. Through experiments, the following conclusions were obtained: 1. The critical size of the sludge particle size is 0.3 mm–0.6 mm. 2. The quality of the water-permeable asphalt concrete specimens increased by 13% before and after silting, and the porosity of the specimens finally decreased from about 20% to about 8%. The water-permeable function only retained less than 20% of the original, and the water-permeable function was basically lost. 3. By measuring the road noise detection, it was found that the road noise is directly proportional to the degree of blockage of the permeable road. Compared with the original road with a perfect permeable function, the road noise of the completely blocked road increased by about 4 decibels. This study reveals the silting process of permeable asphalt mixture and the key particle size of the silt, which is of great significance for the detection, cleaning and maintenance of permeable asphalt pavements.

Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) is the most commonly used in Malaysia for highways, interstates and roads due to its flexibility, economical, strong and provide safe riding quality for road users. Over the years, the increase of damage on pavement roads in Malaysia has become a severe issue although the road did not achieve its design life. Hence, to reduce damage and defect, an improvised road pavement structures is needed. Various studies have been conducted to identify the new materials that can be used as a replacement in hot mix asphalt. In this research, the purpose is to evaluate the performance of eggshell as coarse aggregate replacement in hot mix asphalt. The gradation for aggregate used in this mixture is AC14. The weight for total mixing of the aggregates used is 1200g while the grade for bitumen is 60/70. The samples were mixed with eggshell in the various percentages of 0%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% by total weight of aggregate size 5mm. The laboratory tests carried out to determine the properties of aggregates included, aggregate impact value and aggregate crushing value. Besides, penetration and softening point were also performed to determine the properties of bitumen. Several types of test were conducted towards the samples, which are Marshall Test, Indirect Tensile Strength and Cantabro Test. The results exhibit that the conventional asphalt mixture is more effective than modified asphalt mixture. The replacement of eggshell as coarse aggregate was not enough improvement to the performance of asphalt pavement as the performance of conventional mixture is more stable than modified mixture.

In order to examine the geometric characteristics of BOF (blast oxygen furnace) slag coarse aggregate, the aggregate image measurement system (AIMS) was used to analyze the sphericity, gradient angularity and micro texture. Both volumetric and mechanical properties were studied to evaluate the influence of geometric characteristics of BOF slag coarse aggregate on asphalt concrete. The experimental results show that the BOF slag coarse aggregate has the characteristics of high sphericity, good angular performance and rough surface texture. The geometric characteristics of BOF slag has obvious influence on the volume performance of asphalt concrete. the higher sphericity of BOF slag causes an increase of the air voids of asphalt mixture. BOF slag coarse aggregate can effectively improve the road performances of asphalt concrete. BOF slag’s higher sphericity and angularity improve the moisture damage resistance and rutting resistance of asphalt concrete. Results indicate that better angularity can slightly enhance the moisture resistance property of asphalt concrete, but excessively high angularity of BOF slag coarse aggregates reduces the anti-rutting properties of asphalt mixture.

Expansion joints are a weak and fragile part of bridge superstructure. The damage or failure of the expansion joint will lead to the decline of bridge durability and endanger the bridge structure and traffic safety. To improve the service life and performance of bridge expansion joints, the ideal method is to use seamless expansion joints. In this study, starting from the commonly used asphalt mixture gradation of seamless expansion joint, and taking into account the actual situation of bridge expansion joint structure and environment in China, the gradation and asphalt-aggregate ratio are preliminarily designed. Through a Marshall test, the corresponding asphalt mixture is evaluated and analyzed according to the stability, flow value, and void ratio, and the optimal gradation and asphalt-aggregate ratio are determined. Finally, the asphalt mixture is prepared with the mixture ratio design, and the test results of an immersion Marshall test, fatigue performance test, and full-scale test verify that the asphalt mixture meets the road performance requirements of seamless expansion joints. On the basis of the experimental data, the performance of large sample asphalt mixture is continuously tested, compared, and optimized. The results show that the asphalt mixture ratio designed is true and reliable, which can provide reference for the optimal design of seamless expansion joint filler.

The type and fineness of a filler significantly affect the performance of an asphalt mixture. There is a lack of specific research on the effects of filler fineness and dust from aggregates on the properties of epoxy asphalt (EA) mixtures. The effects of aggregate dust and mineral powder on the properties of an EA mixture were evaluated. These filler were tested to determine their fineness, specific surface area and mineral composition. The effects of these fillers on the EA mastic sample and mixture were evaluated. The morphology of the EA mastic samples was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The effects of the fillers on the Marshall stability, tensile strength and fatigue performance of the EA mixture were evaluated. The dust from the aggregates exhibited an even particle size distribution, and its average particle size was approximately 20% of that of the mineral powder. The SEM microanalysis showed that the EA mastic sample containing relatively fine dust formed a tight and dense interfacial bonding structure with the aggregate. The EA mixture sample containing filler composed of dust from aggregate had a significantly higher strength and longer fatigue life than that of the EA sample containing filler composed of mineral powder.

Tire—pavement interaction behaviours result in large amounts of wearing waste matter, which attaches to the surface of the pavement and is directly exposed to the surrounding environment. This kind of matter imposes a great challenge to the environment of the road area. The current study is devoted to carrying out a comprehensive investigation of the formation mechanism of tire—pavement wearing waste (TPWW), as well as the resulting environmental risks. A self-developed piece of accelerated polishing equipment, the Harbin advanced polishing machine (HAPM), was employed to simulate the wearing process between vehicle tires and pavement surfaces, and the TPWW was collected to conduct morphological, physical, and chemical characterisations. The results from this study show that the production rate of TPWW decreases with the increase in polishing duration, and the coarse particles (diameters greater than 0.425 mm) account for most of the TPWW obtained. The fine fraction (diameter smaller than 0.425 mm) of the TPWW comprises variously sized and irregularly shaped rubber particles from the tire, as well as uniformly sized and angular fine aggregates. The environmental analysis results show that volatile alkanes (C9–C16) are the major organic contaminants in TPWW. The Open-Graded Friction Course (OGFC) asphalt mixture containing crumb rubber as a modifier showed the highest risk of heavy metal pollution, and special concern must be given to tire materials for the purpose of improving the environmental conditions of road areas. The use of polyurethane as a binder material in the production of pavement mixtures has an environmental benefit in terms of pollution from both organic contaminants and heavy metals.

Fiber reinforced recycled aggregate concrete has become a new type of green concrete material. The maximum particle size of coarse aggregates and steel fiber contents affect the mechanical properties and impact resistance of recycled aggregate concrete. However, such studies are rare in literature. The present paper shortens the gap through experimental study. A total of 144 specimens of 12 kinds of concrete mixtures were tested, which adopted different steel fiber volume admixtures (0%, 0.8%, 1.0%, 1.2%) and recycled coarse aggregates in different maximum particle sizes (9.5, 19, 31.5 mm) replacing 30% natural coarse aggregate. The compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and impact resistance of the 12 concrete mixtures were tested. The results showed that the compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and impact resistance of recycled aggregate concrete increased first and then decreased with the increase of the maximum particle size. The recycled aggregate concrete with the maximum particle size of 19 mm had the highest mechanical properties and impact resistance. Besides, with the increase of steel fiber content, the compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and impact resistance of recycled aggregate concrete showed an increasing trend. Considering a large amount of experimental data and the coupling effect of steel fiber contents and the maximum particle size of coarse aggregates, the Weibull distribution function was introduced to analyze the impact test results and predict the number of resistance to impact under different failure probabilities. The results showed that the number of blows of the recycled aggregate concrete followed a two-parameter Weibull distribution, and the estimated value of the number of resistance to impact for failure increased with the increase of the failure probability.
