In the present study, visible light active CuS/CdS nanocomposites of various compositions (1%, 2% and 3%) were synthesized via wet impregnation method and these photocatalysts were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). The photocatalytic degradation efficiency of the synthesized photocatalysts was evaluated from the degradation of methylene blue (MB) under the visible light irradiation. Among all compositions, a 1% CuS/CdS nanocomposite showed about 89.5% degradation in 90 min than the pure CuS, CdS and other composites. Photoluminescence and photoelectrochemical measurements indicated that the 1% CuS/CdS nanocomposite greatly enhanced the charge generation and restrained the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. A possible mechanism of photocatalytic degradation has been proposed.

Novel ZnIn2S4/FeUiO-66 (ZFeU) photocatalyst with different proportion of FeUiO-66 has been successfully prepared by a facile one-pot solvothermal reaction. The as-synthesized nanocomposites have been thoroughly characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis DRS), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) characterization, photoluminescence (PL) analysis and electrochemical impedance spectrum (EIS). The photocatalytic performance of ZFeU nanocomposites for the photodegradation of RhB under visible light irradiation was better than that of ZnIn2S4 and FeUiO-66 alone. The experiment results showed the 20% ZFeU nanocomposites had the best photocatalytic properties. At the same time, a probable mechanism was discussed and it was believed that introduction of FeUiO-66 on ZnIn2S4 would minimize the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, leading to the enhancement of the photocatalytic activity.

The Bi2S3-TiO2-RGO composites were synthesized by a facile one-step hydrothermal method and applied for the photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B (Rh B) under the visible light. The Bi2S3-TiO2-RGO composites were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer. The results indicated that the Bi2S3-TiO2-RGO composites were successfully prepared, and Ti-O-C and S-C bonds were existing among Bi2S3, TiO2 as well as RGO. Furthermore, the photocatalytic ability of Bi2S3-TiO2-RGO composites was excellent under visible light due to its responding to the whole visible light region, low recombination rate of photogenerated electron–hole pairs and relatively negative conduction band. Rh B photocatalytic degradation rate was 99.5% after 50[Formula: see text]min and still could reach 98.4% after five cycles. Finally, a formation mechanism as well as a photocatalytic mechanism of Bi2S3-TiO2-RGO composites were proposed based on the experimental results.

In order to enhance hole/electron separation and charge transfer in photocatalysts, the heterostructured g-C3N4/CoAPO-5 hybrids materials were synthesized via a simple grinding method and were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The optical properties of g-C3N4/CoAPO-5 hybrids materials were measured by ultraviolet-visible diffuse-reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), photoluminescence (PL) spectra and ultraviolet-visible absorption (UV-Vis) spectra. Under visible-light illumination, this work shows the heterogeneous g-C3N4/CoAPO-5 hybrids present a superior photocatalytic activity.

In the present work, shape tailored Cu2O microparticles were synthesized by changing the nature of the reducing agent and studied subsequently. d-(+)-glucose, d-(+)-fructose, d-(+)xylose, d-(+)-galactose, and d-(+)-arabinose were chosen as reducing agents due to their different reducing abilities. The morpho-structural characteristics were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), while their photocatalytic activity was evaluated by methyl orange degradation under visible light (120 min). The results show that the number of carbon atoms in the sugars affect the morphology and particle size (from 250 nm to 1.2 µm), and differences in their degree of crystallinity and photocatalytic activity were also found. The highest activity was observed when glucose was used as the reducing agent.

In the present paper, photocatalytic degradation of paraquat using N-TiO2/SiO2 with different molar ratio of titanium: nitrogen (Ti:N) under visible light was investigated. The catalyst was prepared via immersed SiO2 in N-TiO2. N-TiO2 was synthesized by sol-gel method.  The N-TiO2/SiO2 catalyst was characterized using X-ray diffraction, UV diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The results from characterizations indicated that N-doped anatase TiO2 had a 20-25 nm size. Degradation of paraquat, at an initial concentration of 10 mg/L was determined by UV-Vis. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) was used for process performance. Based on the COD tests, the COD values in residual paraquat was lower than that in initial paraquat concentration after 8 hours illumination of visible light. Moreover, the experiment’s results indicated that 80% of paraquat was degraded within 8 h of illumination time. These results showed that N-TiO2/SiO2 with molar Ti:N=2:1 gives the highest degradation efficiency of paraquat under visible light. This catalyst was stable and reusable suggesting it can be applied to treat organic pollutant in water.

In order to utilize visible light more efficiently in the photocatalytic reaction, microspheres sensitized by 5-(4-allyloxy)phenyl-10,15,20-tri(4-methylphenyl)porphyrin (APTMPP) were prepared and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), nitrogen physisorption, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and so forth, The characterization results indicated that APTMPP-MPS- was composed of the anatase crystal phase. The morphology of the composite materials was spheriform with size of 0.3–0.7 μm and the porphyrin was chemisorbed on the surface of through a Si–O–Ti bond. The photooxidation ofα-terpinene was employed as the model reaction to evaluate the photocatalytic activity of APTMPP-MPS- microspheres under visible light. The results indicated that the photodegradation ofα-terpinene was significantly enhanced in the presence of the APTMPP-MPS- compared with the nonmodified under visible light.

A variety of carbon-modified titania powders were prepared by impregnation method using a commercial available titania powder, Hombikat UV100, as matrix material while a range of alcohols from propanol to hexanol were used as precursors of carbon sources. Rising the carbon number of alcoholic precursor molecule, the modified titania showed increasing visible activities ofNOxphotodegradation. The catalyst modified with cyclohexanol exhibited the best activities of 62%, 62%, 59%, and 54% for the totalNOxremoval under UV, blue, green, and red light irradiation, respectively. The high activity with long wavelength irradiation suggested a good capability of photocatalysis in full visible light spectrum. Analysis of UV-visible spectrum indicated that carbon modification promoted visible light absorption and red shift in band gap. XPS spectroscopic analysis identified the existence of carbonate species (C=O), which increased with the increasing carbon number of precursor molecule. Photoluminescence spectra demonstrated that the carbonate species suppressed the recombination rate of electron-hole pair. As a result, a mechanism of visible-light-active photocatalyst was proposed according to the formation of carbonate species on carbon-modified TiO2.

Tungsten trioxide (WO3) was surface modified with Cu(II) nanoclusters and titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanopowders by using a simple impregnation method followed by a physical combining method. The obtained nanocomposites were studied by scanning electron microscope, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy spectra, UV-visible light spectra, and photoluminescence, respectively. Although the photocatalytic activity of WO3was negligible under visible light irradiation, the visible light photocatalytic activity of WO3was drastically enhanced by surface modification of Cu(II) nanoclusters and TiO2nanopowders. The enhanced photocatalytic activity is due to the efficient charge separation by TiO2and Cu(II) nanoclusters functioning as cocatalysts on the surface. Thus, this simple strategy provides a facile route to prepare efficient visible-light-active photocatalysts for practical application.

A series of BiFeO3 and BiFe[Formula: see text]Mn[Formula: see text]O3 (x = 0, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, 0.08, 0.10) were synthesized by a hydrothermal method. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and their photocatalytic activity was studied by photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue in aqueous solution under visible light irradiation. The band gap of BiFeO3 was significantly decreased from 2.26 eV to 1.90 eV with the doping of Mn. Furthermore, the 6% Mn-doped BiFeO3 photocatalyst exhibited the best activity with a degradation rate of 94% after irradiation for 100 min. The enhanced photocatalytic activity with Mn doping could be attributed to the enhanced optical absorption, increment of surface reactive sites and reduction of electron–hole recombination. Our results may be conducive to design more efficient photocatalysts responsive to visible light among narrow band gap semiconductors.
