Characterisation and Object-Oriented Finite Element Modelling of Polypropylene/ Organoclay Nanocomposites

Although much research work has been conducted on the production and characterisation of polypropylene/organoclay nanocomposites, the effects of nanoscale fillers with respect to actual morphology through numerical modelling have been rarely addressed. This paper describes a unique development from fabrication and experimental characterisation to the numerical modelling of polypropylene/organoclay nanocomposites based on the real mapping of nano/microstructures. Twin screw extrusion is used with a two-step masterbatch compounding method to prepare such nanocomposites with organoclays (ranging between 1wt% and 10wt%) and maleated polypropylene (1:1 weight ratio). The material characterisation using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMTA) are conducted and mechanical properties are determined by tensile, flexural and impact tests. Finally, computational models are established by using an innovative object-oriented finite element analysis code (OOF) to predict the overall mechanical properties of nanocomposites.

Steering knuckle connects steering system, suspension system and braking system to the chassis. The steering knuckle contributes a significant weight to the total weight of a vehicle. Increasing the efficiency of an automobile without compromising the performances is the major challenge faced by the manufacturers. This paper presents an effective topology optimization of steering knuckle used in a vehicle with the primary objective of minimizing weight. The study on optimization of knuckle is divided into two phases, the first phase involves making of a computer-aided design model of the original steering knuckle and carry out finite element analysis on the knuckle by estimating the loads, which are acting on the component. In the second phase, design optimization of the model of steering knuckle is carried out, and excess material is removed at the region where induced stress is negligible as obtained in finite element analysis assuming standard boundary and loading conditions. The paper describes a research work carried out to optimize structural topology giving the essential details. The methodology may be applied to optimize structural components used in applications where the ratio of desired properties to the cost, generally in terms of weight, is to be optimized. In the case of automobiles, strength to weight ratio has to be maximized. New researchers working in the area will have an understanding of the procedures, and further, the techniques may be applied to design in general.

Determining mechanical properties of Bulk Metallic Glasses (BMGs) requires synthesizing of the alloys in bulk form. However obtaining metallic glass in bulk form is quite challenging due to its tendency towards crystallization. In such circumstances it is beneficial to determine the mechanical properties of materials using finite elemental analysis of microstructures. Thus, in the present investigation, using Object Oriented Finite Element Analysis (OOF2) software package, Stress-Strain analysis has been carried out on Zr60Cu10Al15Ni15 BMG to determine such mechanical properties. Specimen of Zr60Cu10Al15Ni15 BMG exhibiting three microstructurally distinct regions amorphous, partial crystalline and crystalline regions was used for this analysis. The Stress-Strain relationship have been estimated for each of the three distinct phases and the results are validated by determining the Modulus of Elasticity for all the phases and comparing it with the available experimental results from Nano-indentation test.

In recent years, composite material is used as an alternative material for materials like metal, wood, etc. due to low in weight, strength to weight ratio and stiffness properties. Natural fibers like coir fiber, palm fiber, jute fiber, banana plant fiber, etc have low cost, easy availability and less harmful to human body. Also, carbon fiber having various properties such as high strength to weight ratio, rigidity, good tensile strength, fatigue resistance, fire resistance/not flammable, high thermal conductivity. This research work aims to find out the mechanical properties of Carbon fiber, Coir fiber and Epoxy composite material with different ply orientations angles by using FEA software Ansys APDL R15.0.

As composite materials have advantages of high strength-to-weight ratio and superior corrosion resistance properties, it is used in emergencies in the construction of mobile bridges as the preferred material. However, In contrast to traditional steel or aluminum to the movement of the bridge as the main material, the original bridge forms need to be improved in order to reach the full of FRP material properties. In this paper, to study the domestic light-weight mobile FRP Bridge, the finite element method is used to analysis the mechanical properties of bridge.

Object oriented finite element analysis (OOF2) is used to estimate the thermal and mechanical properties of WC– Al 2 O 3 composites. In the present work, five compositions of 10%, 20%, 30%, 40% and 50% Al 2 O 3 (by volume) are studied. Young's modulus, thermal conductivity and thermal expansion coefficient are estimated using OOF2 and compared with other known analytical methods. Stress and strain contours are plotted to study the thermal and mechanical behavior of composites. It is found that the stresses are largely concentrated at the interfaces of the WC– Al 2 O 3 phases.

The paper makes an analysis of the reinforced concrete beams with exterior FRP Shell in Finite Element, and compares it with the test results. The results show that, by means of this model, mechanical properties of reinforced concrete beams with exterior FRP shell can be predicted better. However, the larger the load, the larger deviation between calculated values and test values. Hence, if more accurate calculation is required, issues of contact interface between the reinforced concrete beams and the FRP shell should be taken into consideration.
