This work presents a novel thermal assisted ultra-violet (UV) photocatalysis oxidation method for total phosphorus (TP) detection. A 365nm wavelength UV light was used as the UV light source, and the TiO2 particles, immobilized on silicon wafer, were used as the catalyst. The sodium glycerophosphate was digested as the typical compound of TP. The digested samples were determined by spectrophotometry after the phosphomolybdenum blue reaction. The catalyst can be used repetitively with long-term stability in this work. For the photocatalysis digestion process under room-temperature, when the reaction time reached 120min, the conversion rates were 92.31% and 93.66% for 1mg/L and 4mg/L of C3H7Na2O6P solutions, respectively. And conversion rates were 95.48% and 99.37% respectively for thermal assisted ultra-violet (UV) photocatalysis digestion process at the condition of 30min and 60°C. Compared with the conventional thermal digestion method and photocatalysis digestion method for TP detection, this thermal assisted UV digestion method can greatly decrease the digestion time and enhance the efficiency.

A nanostructured plasmonic photocatalyst, silver/silver thiocyanate (Ag@AgSCN), has been prepared by a simple precipitation method followed by UV-light-induced reduction. The ratio of Ag to silver thiocyanate (AgSCN) can be controlled by simply adjusting the photo-induced reduction time. The formation mechanism of the product was investigated based on the time-dependent experiments. Further experiments indicated that the prepared Ag@AgSCN nanostructures with an atomic ratio of Ag/AgSCN = 0.0463 exhibited high photocatalytic activity and long-term stability for the degradation of oxytetracycline (84%) under visible-light irradiation. In addition to the microstructure and high specific surface area, the enhanced photocatalytic activity was mainly caused by the surface plasmon resonance of Ag nanoparticles, and the high stability of AgSCN resulted in the long-term stability of the photocatalyst product.

Cobalt (Co2+) is an essential constituent in the human body while excessive exposure leads to severe systemic toxic reactions which highlight the importance of developing effective methods to detect Co2+ ions. A simple and highly efficient fluorescence enhanced turn OFF-ON chemosensor was synthesized to detect the paramagnetic Co2+. The ligand, N-((1H-indol-3-yl)(phenyl)methyl)aniline (L), was synthesized in 92% yield by means of hydrated ferric chloride catalyzed one -pot multicomponent microwave irradiation in the presence of Indole, benzaldehyde, and aniline as reactants. The major green principles of waste prevention, high atom economy (94.3%), green solvent, higher energy efficiency, and catalysis were the highlights of the ligand synthesis. The ligand exhibited remarkable fluorescence enhancement with Co2+ and a turn ON ratio of over 160-fold in MeOH/H2O (at pH 3.5) solution at an excitation wavelength of 369 nm in the Ultra-Violet range. The detection limit of L- Co2+ was 2.2 μM. The excitation and the emission spectra indicated stoke’s shift of 93 nm which supports the fluorescence enhancement observed in L- Co2+ with respect to the free ligand. The Job’s plot indicated fluorometric sensing of Co2+ ascribed to the complex formation with a stoichiometric ratio of 2:1 (L- Co2+). Furthermore, the high linearity (r2 =0.992) observed in the Benesi Hildebrand plot in a wide concentration range of 0.5−80 μM confirmed the above stoichiometric ratio. The association constant (Ka) for the L-Co2+ was determined to be 8.382 ×1 04 M−1 ± 5.8 ×103M−1.The prepared Co2+ fluorometric probe indicated long-term stability in −18 ℃ up to 45 days. Furthermore, the presence of Fe2+ and Fe3+ in the medium with Co2+ exhibited an interference effect in the fluorescence intensities. Upon further concentration studies, it was evident that the interference of Fe2+ and Fe3+ starts around 10.00 μM and rises exponentially. Addition of nanoparticles currently in polymer blends has brought tremendous transformation in polymer engineering field. Incorporation of TiO2 nanofillers is believed to enhance the physical and mechanical properties of PVC/ENR blends due to its excellent characteristics including non-toxicity, long term stability and UV light discoloration resistance. The main objective of this research work is to introduce titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanofillers in a range of 0 - 6 phr into polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) blends. Modification on mechanical properties of PVC/ENR blends has successfully been carried via irradiation crosslinking technique. The addition of TiO2 nanofillers has improved the tensile strength and hardness of the nanocomposites. Nevertheless, at higher loading of 6 phr, the results obviously showed an insignificant difference of performances for both tensile strength and shore hardness properties. Upon radiation of 50 kGy, the increase in Ts of the PVC/ENR blends with addition of 4 phr TiO2 was found to be optimum before the Ts value drops with higher exposure to irradiation dose rate. Gel fraction of irradiated PVC/ENR/TiO2 nanocomposites indicates the nanocomposites are crosslinked upon electron beam irradiation. Degree of crosslink was also increased with the addition of 4 phr and 6 phr TiO2.

A new combination of silica fibres, highly transparent in the ultraviolet (UV) and showing long term stability, combined with a teflon-coated liquid-core waveguide (LCW) is presented for remote sensing in the deep UV, for monitoring one of the major pollutants, nitrates, in water, but with potentially wider applicability. The arrangement exhibits low spectral loss in the range between wavelengths of 200 nm and 400 nm and can be used for analytical investigations to determine small concentrations of such impurities in water. The operation of the optical system to achieve guidance of UV light below a wavelength of 250 nm for fibre optic sensors is discussed. With an optical pathlength of 203 mm, nitrate concentrations as low as 22 μg/l could be detected.

Abstract. The concept of emotional intelligence (EI) has attracted growing interest from researchers working in various fields. The present study examined the long-term stability (32 months) of EI-related abilities over the course of a major life transition (the transition from high school to university). During the first week of full-time study, a large group of undergraduates completed the EQ-i:Short; 32 months later a random subset of these students (N = 238), who had started their postsecondary education within 24 months of graduating from high school, completed the measures for a second time. The study found EI scores to be relatively stable over the 32-month time period. EI scores were also found to be significantly higher at Time 2; the overall pattern of change in EI-levels was more than can be attributed to the increased age of the participants.

SummaryIn a collaborative trial of eleven laboratories which was performed mainly within the framework of the European Community Bureau of Reference (BCR), a second reference material for thromboplastin, rabbit, plain, was calibrated against its predecessor RBT/79. This second reference material (coded CRM 149R) has a mean International Sensitivity Index (ISI) of 1.343 with a standard error of the mean of 0.035. The standard error of the ISI was determined by combination of the standard errors of the ISI of RBT/79 and the slope of the calibration line in this trial. The BCR reference material for thromboplastin, human, plain (coded BCT/099) was also included in this trial for assessment of the long-term stability of the relationship with RBT/79. The results indicated that this relationship has not changed over a period of 8 years. The interlaboratory variation of the slope of the relationship between CRM 149R and RBT/79 was significantly lower than the variation of the slope of the relationship between BCT/099 and RBT/79. In addition to the manual technique, a semi-automatic coagulometer according to Schnitger & Gross was used to determine prothrombin times with CRM 149R. The mean ISI of CRM 149R was not affected by replacement of the manual technique by this particular coagulometer. Two lyophilized plasmas were included in this trial. The mean slope of relationship between RBT/79 and CRM 149R based on the two lyophilized plasmas was the same as the corresponding slope based on fresh plasmas. Tlowever, the mean slope of relationship between RBT/79 and BCT/099 based on the two lyophilized plasmas was 4.9% higher than the mean slope based on fresh plasmas. Thus, the use of these lyophilized plasmas induced a small but significant bias in the slope of relationship between these thromboplastins of different species.
