In this regard, two beta titanium alloys in the Ti-Al-Mo-V-Cr system, Ti-3Al-5Mo-7V-3Cr (Ti-3573) and Ti-3Al-8Mo-7V-3Cr (Ti-3873), have been designed. Comparison of the microstructure and mechanical properties of both alloys after solution treatment was conducted. The result shows that the β grains in Ti-3873 alloy are abnormally grown at WQ. The elongation of Ti-3573 alloy is higher than that of Ti-3873 alloy, it is related to the the smaller grain size. The Ti-3873 alloy has moderate plasticity but higher yield strength and tensile strength. Fine and deep dimples associated with ductile fracture were obtained for the Ti-3573 alloy. The fractography of the β-substrate specimens showed that the fracture mode was ductile fracture. The Ti-3873 alloy has a combination of slip and twinning during deformation. It is possible for the Ti-3573 alloy to undergo both twinning and TRIP effect upon deformation. Therefore, Ti-3573 alloy exhibited good plasticity and strength matching.

The effects of Gd, Y content on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Mg-Gd-Y-Nd-Zr alloy were investigated using hardness measurements, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), and uniaxial tensile testing. The results indicate that the alloys in as-cast condition mainly consist of α-Mg matrix and non-equilibrium eutectic Mg5.05RE (RE = Gd, Y, Nd). After solution treatment, the non-equilibrium eutectics dissolved into the matrix but some block shaped RE-rich particles were left at the grain boundaries and within grains. These particles are especially Y-rich and deteriorate the mechanical properties of the alloys. Both the compositions of the eutectic and the block shaped particle were independent of the total Gd, Y content of the alloys, but the number of the particles increases as the total Gd, Y content increases. The ultimate tensile strength increases as the total Gd, Y content decreases. A Mg-5.56Gd-3.38Y-1.11Nd-0.48Zr alloy with the highest ultimate tensile strength of 280 MPa and an elongation of 1.3% was fabricated. The high strength is attributed to the age hardening behavior and the decrease in block shaped particles.

Cyclic channel die compression (CCDC) of AZ31-1.7 wt.% Si alloy was performed up to 5 passes at 623 K in order to investigate the microstructure and mechanical properties of compressed alloys. The results show that multi-pass CCDC is very effective to refine the matrix grain and Mg2Si phases. After the alloy is processed for 5 passes, the mean grain size decreases from 300 μm of as-cast to 8 μm. Both dendritic and Chinese script type Mg2Si phases break into small polygonal pieces and distribute uniformly in the matrix. The tensile strength increases prominently from 118 MPa to 216 MPa, whereas the hardness of alloy deformed 5 passes only increase by 8.4% compared with as-cast state.

The effects of Mg and Cu additions with different contents on the mechanical properties of Al-Si alloy prepared by indirect squeeze casting have been experimentally investigated. The microstructure and mechanical properties of as-cast and T6-treated Al-Si-Cu-Mg alloys were tested by OM, SEM, DSC and tensile measurement, where the samples were produced by artificial aging at 180°C for 8 h after solution treatment at 540°C for 4 h. It has been found that for the as-cast alloys, with increasing contents of Mg and Cu the tensile strength (UTS) and yield strength (YS) increased, while the percentage elongation (El) decreased. And the optimal mechanical properties of Al-Si-Cu-Mg alloys were obtained under the content ratio of Cu/Mg within 4, where the UTS and El reached 426 MPa and 6.3% after T6 treated, respectively.

In this paper, the microstructure and mechanical properties of the as-cast and heat treatment of Mg-Zn-Nd alloy was investigated. The alloy was manufactured by a conventional casting method, and then subjected to a heat treatment. The results showed that the microstructure of as-cast alloy was comprised of α-Mg matrix and Mg12Nd phase. With increase of Nd content, the grain size gradually decreased from 25.38 μm to 9.82 μm. The ultimate tensile strength and elongation at room temperature of the Mg94Zn2Nd4 alloy can be reached to 219.63 MPa and 5.31%. After heat treatment, part of the second phase dissolved into the magnesium matrix and the grain size became a little larger than that of the as-cast. The ultimate tensile strength was declined by about 2.5%, and the elongation was increased to 5.47%.

The effect of forging and solution temperature on the microstructure and mechanical properties of 316LN stainless steel has been investigated by optical microscope, tensile testing machine and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results show that the average grain size of the steel was refined from 150μm to 70μm after forging and solution treatment. With increasing solution temperature, the tensile strength and yield strength decreased. On the contrary, the elongation of the steel increased with increasing solution temperature except at 1200°C. The tensile strength of the samples forged at 1100°C is better than those of the samples forged at 1000 and 1200°Cafter solution treatment. Tensile fracture morphologies observation showed that all the specimens have ductile fracture morphologies. With increasing solution temperature, the toughness of the steel becomes better and better except at 1200°C. Both the microstructure and mechanical properties of the 316LN stainless steel have been improved after forging at 1100°C and following by solution treatment at 1150°C.

Effects of AlN addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of as-cast Mg-Al-Zn magnesium alloy were investigated using optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and tensile testing. Five different samples were made with different amounts of AlN(0wt%, 0.12wt%, 0.30wt%, 0.48wt%, 0. 60wt%). The results show that the phases of as-cast alloy are composed of α-Mg,β-Mg17Al12. The addition of AlN suppressed the precipitation of the β-phase. And, with the increase of AlN content, the microstructure of β-phase was changed from the reticulum to fine grains. When AlN content was up to 0.48wt% in the alloy, the β-phase became most uniform distribution. After adding 0.3wt% AlN to Al-Mg-Zn alloy, the average alloy grain size reduced from 102μm to 35μm ,the tensile strength of alloy was the highest. The average tensile strength increased from 139MPa to 169.91MPa, the hardness increased from 77.7HB to 98.4HB, but the elongation changes indistinctively. However, when more amount of AlN was added, the average alloy grain size did not reduce sequentially and increased to 50μm by adding 0.6wt% AlN and the β-phase became a little more. Keywords: Al-Mg-Zn alloy; AlN; β-Mg17Al12; Tensile strength

AbstractThe effects of Bi on the microstructure and mechanical properties of AZ80-2Sn alloy were investigated. The results show that the addition of Bi within the as-cast AZ80-2Sn alloy promotes the formation of Mg3Bi2 phase, which can refine the grains and make the eutectic phases discontinuous. The addition of 0.5 % Bi within the as-extruded AZ80-2Sn alloy, the average grain size decreases to 12 μm and the fine granular Mg17Al12 and Mg3Bi2 phases are dispersed in the α-Mg matrix. With an increase in Bi content, the Mg17Al12 and Mg3Bi2 phases become coarsened and the grain size increases. The as-extruded AZ80-2Sn-0.5 %Bi alloy has the optimal properties, and the ultimate tensile strength, yield strength and elongation are 379.6 MPa, 247.1 MPa and 14.8 %, respectively.

The effects of Sr and B addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of AZ91 alloy were studied. The results of this work show that a small amount of Sr addition to AZ91 refined the grain size. The highest tensile strength was obtained from the alloy with the optimal composition of 0.5% Sr and 0.09% B added, in which the average grain size was 42 μm. The tensile strength and elongation of the AZ91–0.5%Sr–0.09%B alloy were 151 MPa and 1.62%, respectively. Some needle-shaped Al4Sr particles distributed mainly at grain boundaries have been observed in the alloys with Sr and B additions. The fluidity is improved significantly, and the solidification range decreased by adding Sr and B. The liquidus of AZ91 alloy decreased markedly with the addition of Sr and B, but the solidus hardly changed. Therefore, the solidification range can be decreased, which will improve the die-casting properties.

The effect of the combined action of hot work and heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties of a Mg-2Gd-Nd-0.4Zn-0.3Zr (wt. %) (E21) alloy was investigated. Results showed that the solution treatment time of the ingot played a great effect on the mechanical properties of the extruded alloy. With solution treating time of the ingot increasing, the tensile strength of the extruded alloy decreased gradually, but the elongation increased greatly. The best combination of strength and ductility was achieved for the extruded alloy after the ingot solution treated at 520°C for 3 h, extrusion at 400°C and aging at 200°C for 16 h, namely ultimate tensile strength = 331MPa and elongation = 7.1%.
