Effect of Halloysite Nanotubes on Physico-Mechanical Properties of Silk/Basalt Fabric Reinforced Epoxy Composites

Natural fiber reinforced polymer composites have become more attractive due to their high specific strength, light weight and environmental concern. However, some limitations such as low modulus and poor moisture resistance were reported. This paper presents the role of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) on physico-mechanical properties of bidirectional silk and basalt fiber reinforced epoxy (SF-BF/Ep) hybrid composites. Vacuum bagging and ultra-sonication method were used for the fabrication of hybrid composite slabs. The effect of HNT loadings (1.5, 3 and 4.5 wt. %) on physico-mechanical characteristics like density, hardness, flexural and impact properties of SF-BF/Ep composites were determined according to ASTM standards. Experimental results revealed that the incorporation of HNTs improves the mechanical properties. The impact strength of SF-BF/Ep is predominant at 3 wt. % HNT loading where the impact strength surges to 568.67 J/m, which may render HNT filled SF-BF/Ep desirable for various toughness-critical structural applications. The test results demonstrated that SF-BF/Ep-3HNT coded composites exhibited improved mechanical properties among the all composites.

AbstractMechanical properties of fiber reinforcement that can be obtained by the introduction of basalt fibers in jute fiber-reinforced polyester composites have been analyzed experimentally. Basalt/jute fiber-reinforced hybrid polymer composites were fabricated with a varying fiber percentage by using compression molding techniques. The fabricated composite plates were subjected to mechanical testing to estimate tensile strength, flexural strength and impact strength of the composites. The effect of fiber content on basalt/jute fiber in the composites has been studied. Addition of jute fiber into basalt fiber composite makes it a cost-effective one. Incorporation of basalt fiber into the composites was at approximately 10%, 20%, up to 90%, and the jute fiber percentage was reduced from 90%, 80%, to 10% correspondingly. Mechanical properties were investigated as per ASTM standards. Tensile and flexural strengths were tested by using a computer-assisted universal testing machine, and impact strength by using an Izod impact tester. It has been observed that the addition of jute fiber to the basalt fiber polyester composites enhanced the mechanical properties. Water absorption of hybrid composites was also analyzed and was found to be proportional to fiber percentage.

Automobile bumper is an essential component that is commonly used to absorb the impact load during vehicle collisions, in fact it saves lives at such occurrences.In order to withstand the impact load, and the bumper deforms itself during collision and protects the passengers by havingthe proper cross section and the material selection. In this way, the study explores the mechanical characterization of fabricated composite and its structural analysis. Impact conditions have to be studied for improving the mechanical properties of the bumper during collision. The material chosen for analysis is jute and Glass fiber reinforced hybrid epoxy composite, considering its light weight and strength characteristics. Composites with two different fibre orientations (45°/90°) are fabricated using Hydraulic Compression Moulding technique. From experimental observations of jute and glass fiber reinforced hybrid composites, the orientation has significant effect on the structural and mechanical properties. The results are validated using the simulation of a bumper by impact modelling using CATIA software and impact analysis is carried out using ANSYS.

New technologies in the automotive industry require lightweight, environment-friendly, and mechanically strong materials. Bast fibers such as kenaf, flax, and hemp reinforced polymers are frequently used composites in semi-structural applications in industry. However, the low mechanical properties of bast fibers limit the applications of these composites in structural applications. The work presented here aims to enhance the mechanical property profile of bast fiber reinforced acrylic-based polyester resin composites by hybridization with basalt fibers. The hybridization was studied in three resin forms, solution, dispersion, and a mixture of solution and dispersion resin forms. The composites were prepared by established processing methods such as carding, resin impregnation, and compression molding. The composites were characterized for their mechanical (tensile, flexural, and Charpy impact strength), thermal, and morphological properties. The mechanical performance of hybrid bast/basalt fiber composites was significantly improved compared to their respective bast fiber composites. For hybrid composites, the specific flexural modulus and strength were on an average about 21 and 19% higher, specific tensile modulus and strength about 31 and 16% higher, respectively, and the specific impact energy was 13% higher than bast fiber reinforced composites. The statistical significance of the results was analyzed using one-way analysis of variance.


Natural fibers from plants are gaining importance and may substitute wood in the production of wood plastic composites (WPC). To ensure continuity of fiber supply and sustainability of WPC industries, fibers of various types could be mixed together to obtain Mix WPC. However, research need to be carried out to identify the contribution of different fiber type collectively to the mechanical properties of Mix natural fiber polymer composite (NFPC). In this study, preliminary work on the use of natural fibre (NF) such as kenaf, sugar palm and pineapple leaf fibers in the preparation of Mix NFPC were carried out. Four different fiber mix samples with different fiber ratio and size were formulated using polypropylene (PP) as the polymer matrix. Montmorrilonite (MMT) filler was added at constant amount for enhancement of composite mechanical properties. Samples were mixed and prepared using a twin screw extruder and mini injection moulding resepectively. Individual fibers and NFPC prepared were characterized using thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). Tensile, flexural and impact strength of the composites were determined. Generally, it was found that addition of fiber mix at 50% fiber loading enhance the tensile and flexural strength of the various NFPC with minimal exceptions. The impact strength of the composites were comparable to that of blank PP implying that addition of fiber gives additional advantage besides being eco-friendly. It was also found that higher kenaf loading and different size of fiber mix contribute positively to the various strengths measured. In addition to that, composition of individual fibers also contribute to the mechanical properties of the NFPCs

Natural fibers have been used to reinforce materials in many composite structures. Many types of natural fibers have been investigated including flax, hemp, ramie, sisal, abaca, banana etc., due to the advantage that they are light weight, renewable resources and have marketing appeal. These agricultural wastes can also be used to prepare fiber reinforced polymer hybrid composites in various combinations for commercial use. Application of composite materials in structural applications has presented the need for the engineering analysis. The present work focuses on the fabrication of polymer matrix composites by using natural fibers like banana and cotton which are abundant in nature and analysing the effect of mechanical properties of the composites on different surface treatments on the fabric. The effect of various surface treatments (NaOH, SLS, KMnO4) on the mechanical properties namely tensile, flexural and impact was analyzed and are discussed in this project. Analysing the material characteristics of the compression moulded composites; their results were measured on sections of the material to make use of the natural fiber reinforced polymer composite material for automotive seat shell manufacturing.

Natural fiber reinforced polymer composites became more attractive due to their light weight, high specific strength, biodegradability. However, some limitations e.g. low modulus, poor moisture resistance were reported. The mechanical properties of natural fiber reinforced composites can be improved by hybridization with synthetic fibers such as glass fiber. In this research, mechanical properties of short sisal-PP composites and short sisal/glass fiber hybrid composites were studied. Polypropylene grafted with maleic anhydride (PP-g-MA) was used as a compatibilizer to enhance the compatibility between the fibers and polypropylene. Effect of weight ratio of sisal and glass fiber at 30 % by weight on the mechanical properties of the composites was investigated. Morphology of fracture surface of each composite was also observed.

Natural fiber as reinforcement filler in polymer composites is an attractive approach due to being fully biodegradable and cheap. However, incompatibility between hydrophilic natural fiber and hydrophobic polymer matrix restricts the application. The current studies focus on the effects of incorporation of silane treated OPMF into polylactic acid (PLA)/polycaprolactone (PCL)/nanoclay/OPMF hybrid composites. The composites were prepared by melt blending technique and characterize the composites with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). FTIR spectra indicated that peak shifting occurs when silane treated OPMF was incorporated into hybrid composites. Based on mechanical properties results, incorporation of silane treated OPMF enhances the mechanical properties of unmodified OPMF hybrid composites with the enhancement of flexural and impact strength being 17.60% and 48.43%, respectively, at 10% fiber loading. TGA thermogram shows that incorporation of silane treated OPMF did not show increment in thermal properties of hybrid composites. SEM micrographs revealed that silane treated OPMF hybrid composites show good fiber/matrix adhesion as fiber is still embedded in the matrix and no cavity is present on the surface. Water absorption test shows that addition of less hydrophilic silane treated OPMF successfully reduces the water uptake of hybrid composites.

Elephant dung is an excellent source of cellulosic fiber that is a basic requirement for paper making. But they contributed to very small percentage production of elephant dung. So, researchers are trying to find a new area of utilization of elephant dung fiber pulp as in reinforcement’s polymer composite. In this experiment element dung fiber pulp in the natural fiber component chemically treated with alkaline and soda AQ solution in this study, it has been aimed to use elephant dung fiber pulp in composite material and to study mechanical properties of the produced material. The produced composite samples were then characterized using tensile test, Izod impact test, thickness test. The fracture surface of the polymer composite sample was also inspected with the help of SEM. The content of elephant dung fiber pulp is varied (35%, 45%, 55%) weight percentage whereas the epoxy resin is varied (50%, 40%, 30%) percentage is kept constant 15% in hardener. The entire sample has been tested in a universal testing machine as per ASTM standard for tensile strength and impact strength. It is observed that composite with 35% fiber pulp is having the highest tensile strength of 4mm 6.445 Mpa and 8mm 11.80 Mpa. The impact strength of composite with 35% fiber pulp washes highest than 45% to 55% dung fiber pulp. This produces composite sheet will be used for the surfboards, sporting goods, building panel this not only reduces the cost but also save from environmental pollution.

Abstract The main aim of this work is to study thedamage tolerance of hybrid basalt and carbon fiber-reinforced composite subjected to low velocity impact (LVI) at different velocities, 2.89 m s−1 and 4.42 m s−1, simulated using a CEAST drop hammer testing machine and Dynamic Mechanical Analysis(DMA) were conducted to characterize the sample. In this article, the detailed failure mechanism of seven composite laminates (Basalt fiber/Bismaleimide(BMI)-diallyl Bisphenol A(DABA), Carbon fiber/BMI-DABA, Carbon and basalt fiber(hybrid fibers)/BMI-DABA) were studied under loading of LVI. Through the experiment, it was also substantiated that the hybrid fiber-reinforced composites possessed better damage tolerance and thermo mechanical properties than the homogenous fiber-reinforced composites. The hybrid fiber composites that were produced vary in the number of carbon fiber to basalt fiber ratio and stacking sequence. The impacted surface was analyzed at macro level by using Image J software. The impact force, the energy absorbed, and the deformation of the laminates under impact load were scrutinized extensively, and it was inferred that the basalt fiber intercalated with carbon fiber with BMI/DABA possessed the highest damage resistance than the other composite laminates under study. The highest peak force 5702 N and 9241 N with the highest elastic energy 4.8 J, 11.7 J and with lower deformation (3.85 mm, 6.09 mm) and deformation area (22.79 mm2, 28.09 mm2) was observed in the intercalated hybrid laminate.

Hybrid composites are made by combining natural and synthetic fibers with an effective matrix, which usually means they’ve received additional strengthening, such as epoxy, to create the additional material properties you can’t obtain on their own. To attain the desirable tensile modulus, compressive modulus, and so on, a fiber composite needs to be added to the FRP (Fiber Reinforced Polymer). Polymer matrix composites are light and cost-effective to manufacture, but they still friendly to the environment and have viable applications, which is why they are often used in various commercial applications. Unidirectional fibers and bidirectionally reinforced with epoxy (SikaDur is a composite medium) carbon fibers are two-way reinforced with unidirectional (use unidirectional) Before we developed test procedures for preparing the test specimens, the testing lab implemented the layup method according to ASTM standards. Ten separate stacking sequences were tested and four different intensity sequences were used in testing the compressive structures according to ASTM D15. The results of the study indicate that hybridization helps natural fiber-reinforced polymer composites to increase their mechanical properties We would use natural fibers rather than synthetic ones since the natural ones make comparable strength when hybridized with synthetic ones.
