In this paper, the disadvantages of the current CBN (Cubic Boron Nitride) grinding wheels were firstly introduced briefly, for indicating that it was very urgent and important to develop new kinds of grinding wheels with excellent performance to replace the conventional wheels. Then high temperature brazing experiments of monolayer CBN wheels with Ag-Cu-Ti filler alloy were carried out. The result shows that the filler alloy has good wetting capability towards CBN grits. The results of scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersion spectrometer (EDS), as well X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis show that, just because during brazing titanium atoms in filler alloys segregated preferentially to the surface of the CBN to form Ti-nitride or Ti-boride layer by reaction between titanium atoms and nitride and boron atoms at elevated temperature, strong chemical joining was formed in the interface between CBN grits and filler alloys. Finally, the contrastive grinding experiments were performed between the monolayer brazed CBN grinding wheels and the electroplated ones. The results show that the brazed wheels have more excellent performance than the latter.

Brazing diamond wheel was carried out via laser in an argon atmosphere. The interfacial microstructures among brazed diamond, the filler alloy and matrix were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersion spectrometer (EDS) and X- ray diffraction (XRD). The formation mechanism of carbide layers was also discussed. Finally, grinding examination of the grinding wheel was carried through. The results show that diamond can not fall off from the wheel even at heavy duty conditions.

This paper deals with an investigation of the grindability of Titanium alloy Ti–6Al–4V with brazed monolayer CBN grinding wheels, and systematically studies the effect of process parameters on specific energy and grinding temperature. In the investigation, a groove is machined with a brazed monolayer CBN grinding wheel, and the dimension accuracy of groove has been proved to meet the design requirements. There is no microcrack in surface layer of the groove, and the depth of work-hardening is less than 40 μm, which indicates that the grinding affected zone is small. The results show that brazed monolayer CBN grinding wheels have excellent performance during grinding titanium alloy.

Manufacturing of vitrified bond CBN wheels for internal precision grinding of the air-conditioner compressor piston hole is still big challenge to all of the domestic manufacturers. Recently, by choosing pre-melting mixed CBN abrasives and a proper sintering process, a cost-effective method was conceived to produce grinding wheels of comparative quality. The grinding performance of wheels was evaluated with a series of internal precision grinding of compressor piston hole. Experimental results show that the vitrified bond CBN grinding wheel produced by this method has better grinding performance, and can be substitute to the same type of grinding wheels imported. But the manufacturing cost is only 60% of the wheel imported according to estimation.

The effect of a solid lubricant on the wear of cubic boron nitride grinding wheels on a ceramic bond of different hardness and grain size in the processing of high-speed steel is investigated. The dependences of the change in the wear of cubic boron nitride on the parameters of the processing mode are determined. An automated calculation system is proposed to control the consumption of cubic boron nitride grinding wheels in production conditions. Cubic boron nitride (CBN) abrasive grains with surface titanium-deposited film were heat-treated during 550-950°C for 60 min under high vacuum circumstance. Detailed interfacial compounds analysis by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersion spectrometer (EDS), differential thermal analysis (DTA) indicates that the interfacial reactions are much dependent on the heating temperature to some extents, and the reaction products, TiN, TiB2 and TiB chiefly form the network structure. In particular, at 950°C the transition layers with excellent performance, CBN/TiB2/TiB/(TiB+TiN)/TiN/CBN, is realized.

This article offers an overview of 11 grinding wheel construction modifications used in the peripheral grinding of flat, shaped, internal, and external cylindrical surfaces, when grinding wheels made of superabrasive grains are used (natural and synthetic diamonds, as well as mono- and microcrystalline cubic boron nitride). The text contains characteristics of grinding wheels with: bubble corundum grains, glass-crystalline bond, conic chamfer, zones of different diameters, a centrifugal provision of the coolant into the grinding zone, aggregate grains, zone-diversified structure, as well as impregnated (self-lubricating), multiporous, segment and “intelligent” grinding wheels. Each of the presented structural modifications were described by giving construction scheme, used abrasive grains, range of applications, advantages as well as disadvantages. Modifications of the grinding wheel construction allow for effective improvement of both the conditions and the results of the grinding process. A wide range of the known modifications allow for their proper selection depending on the required criteria of effective evaluation and taking into account the specific characteristics of superabrasive grains. As a result, it is possible to obtain positive influence on a number of technological factors of the grinding process. The described modifications of the grinding wheel structure can be also an inspiration and the basis for creating new solutions in this field.

Laser-dressing has been shown to be a promising method for overcoming some shortcomings of the conventional methods such as high wear of the dressing tool and its environmental concerns, high induced damage to the grinding wheel, low form flexibility and low speed. In this study, a resin bonded cBN grinding wheel has been dressed with a picosecond Yb:YAG laser. The efficiency of the laser-dressed grinding wheels has been compared with the conventionally dressed and sharpened grinding wheels through execution of cylindrical grinding tests on a steel workpiece (100Cr6). The conventional dressing and sharpening processes have been performed by using a vitrified SiC wheel and vitrified alumina blocks, respectively. By recording the spindle power values along with the surface topography measurements of the ground workpieces and the extraction of two roughness parameters (the average roughness Ra and the average roughness depth Rz), it is possible to provide an assessment of the cylindrical grinding process with different dressing conditions i.e. laser-dressing and conventional dressing. Accordingly, a strategy will be proposed to optimize the cylindrical grinding process with laser-dressed wheels regarding the forces and roughness values.

The paper presents a method of quantifying the observed wear forms of electroplated cBN grinding wheel. The volume of fractured, pulled out or smeared abrasive was determined. Three grinding wheels working with different grinding speeds were tested.

Abstract In this article, the laser-assisted ultrasonic vibration dressing technique was applied to the cubic boron nitride (CBN) grinding wheel to study the effect of various process parameters (namely, laser power, dressing depth, feed rate, and grinding wheel speed) on the grinding force, surface quality, and morphological evolution of CBN abrasive particles. The results showed that abrasive particles’ morphology mainly undergoes micro-crushing, local crushing, large-area crushing, macro-crushing, and other morphological changes. The dressing force can be effectively reduced by controlling the dressing process parameters. Besides, grinding tests are performed on the grinding wheel after dressing to reveal specimens’ surface quality. Excellent grinding characteristics and grinding quality of the grinding wheel were obtained by the proposed technique with the optimized process parameters.

The thermal properties of the grinding wheel are required for energy partitioning in grinding. This paper describes an investigation of the effective thermal properties of alumina and cubic boron nitride (CBN) grinding wheels. Results are presented for a novel sensor that was designed to measure the bulk thermal properties of grinding wheel samples. The effective bulk thermal properties of the grinding wheel and the effective thermal properties of the abrasive grains were also investigated. It was found that the bulk thermal property is dominated by the properties of the bond and does not account for the improved thermal performance of CBN compared with alumina. Values of the effective thermal conductivities for alumina and CBN abrasive grains are therefore proposed. It is concluded that the effective thermal conductivity of the grains is best obtained inversely from grinding experiments.
