Influence of the ECAP Tool Channel Geometry on the Structure and Properties of Al-3%Mg Aluminium Alloy

In this study, commercial Al-3%Mg aluminium alloy was subjected to ECAP processing using two different ECAP die configurations. The first one – conventional and the second one modified in which a part of the exit channel in the ECAP die, causes twist deformation, to impose extra shear strains to the sample. The local changes in microstructure were characterized by Light Microscopy, SEM equipped with an EBSD facility and TEM. Mechanical properties of the ECAP processed samples were compared based on hardness measurement. The results showed that when ECAP with modified die, the greater grain and crystalline refinement is possible. The microstructures exhibit high dislocation density within subgrains with non-equilibrium and Moiré boundaries. Moreover, the mechanical examinations display a significant improvement in hardness and calculated yield strength when the ECAP process is conducted using a modified die.

The cast Al-Zn-Mg 7000 alloy has become one of the most potential structural materials in many engineering fields such as aircraft body, automotive casting due to their high strength to weight ratio, strong age hardening ability, competitive weight savings, attractive mechanical properties and improvement of thermal properties. The cast aluminium alloy has been modified of surface layer through a solid-state technique is called friction stir process (FSP). But basic principle has been followed by friction stir welding (FSW). This process can be used to locally refine microstructures and eliminate casting defects in selected locations, where mechanical properties improvements can enhance component performance and service life. However, some specified process parameters have adopted during experimental works. Those parameters are tool rotation speed (720 rpm), plate traverse speed (80 mm/min), axial force (15 kN), and tool design (i.e., pin height 3.5 mm and pin diameter 3.0 mm), respectively. The main mechanism behind this process likely to axial force and frictional force acting between the tool shoulder and workpiece results in intense heat generation and plastically soften the process material. The specified ratio of rotational speed (720 rpm) to traverse speed (80 mm/min) is considered 9 as low heat input during FSP and its entails low Zn vaporization problem results as higher fracture toughness of aluminium alloy. It is well known that the stirred zone (SZ) consists of refine equiaxed grains produced due to dynamic recrystallization. FSP has been proven to innovatively enhancing of various properties such as formability, hardness and fracture toughness (32.60 MPa√m). The hardness and fracture toughness of double passes AC+FSP aluminium alloy had been investigated by performing Vicker’s hardness measurement and fracture toughness (KIC)(ASTM E-399 standard) tests. Detailed observations with optical microscopy, Vicker’s hardness measurement, SEM, TEM, and DTA analysis have conducted to analyse microstructure and fracture surfaces of double passes FSP aluminium alloy.

This paper investigated the effect of heat treatment on mechanical properties and microstructure of 6061 aluminium alloy. The aluminium alloys were examined in the heat treated conditions, using different quenching media, water and oil. The alloy was solution heat treated at temperature of 529oC for one, three and five hour respectively. Aging treatment was carried out at temperature of 160oC which is assumed to be the best temperature for ageing process. Hardness measurement was carried out using a Brinell Hardness Tester Machine. The results shows hardness and impact strength are inversely proportional to each other, as the hardness of 6061 aluminium alloy decreases and impact strength increases.

In this study, selectively laser melted AlSi10Mg alloy was subjected to ECAP processing for the first time. Mechanical properties of the ECAP processed samples were compared based on hardness measurement, compression and wear tests. The results showed exceptional synergy of high yield strength ~382 MPa and strain to failure of ~48% of the SLM ECAP processed sample. This sample also offered approximately ~71% higher wear resistance, than an unprocessed one. The proposed novel route expands the opportunities of both technologies to produce materials with exceptional properties.

In this study, ultrafine grain (UFG) SS316L was produced using an equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) process at two different die angles namely 120° and 126°. The effect of different die angles on mechanical, corrosion, and surface properties were thoroughly investigated. Furthermore, the subsequent effect on the cytotoxicity of SS316L was investigated. The microstructure observation shows ECAP processing has produced an elongated, finer grain size at 120° than 126°. The ECAP processing also increases the hardness of SS316L. There is no change in wettability and surface roughness observed. However, the ectrochemical measurement reveals that ECAP processing improves the corrosion resistance of SS316L. The cytocompatibility of ECAPed SS316L was evaluated by both a direct and an extract methods, finding the contribution of grain refinement by ECAP processing.

The effect of severe plastic deformation by ECAP process on the microstructures and mechanical properties of the aluminium alloy EN AW 6082 produced by cold extrusion is investigated. In both states were evaluated the structural changes by light microscopy, the analysis particles in structures, by X-ray diffraction (XRD) in transmission mode by synchrotron radiation and mechanical properties. Severe plastic deformation leads to strengthening of investigated EN AW 6082 alloy but on the other hand the plasticity of ECAP-ed alloy decreases.

This article is described the various possible schemes of severe plastic deformation, by ECAP process that allows receiving metal with ultrafine-grained structure. The results of computer simulation and TEM investigations of aluminium alloy 6060 were presented. It is shown that the equal-channel angular pressing in the proposed matrix with a quasi-starched channel joint angle 45° provides the formation of a homogeneous subgrain structure with a size about 0.5 µm and has a positive effect on the mechanical properties of the aluminium alloy.

The influence of ageing and Equal Channel Angular Pressing (ECAP) on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Mg-2.5%Tb-0.78%Sm alloy has been examined. The microhardness changes during ageing at 200ºC show a slight increase. The aged microstructure at maximum hardness contains Mg12(Tb,Sm) - metastable β’ phase of size about 2-10 nm as dispersed precipitates. The orientation relationship between β’ phase and the matrix was found as follows:(0001)Mg || (1¯10)β′, [21¯10]Mg || [116]β′. The ECAP passes were performed by two procedures: “I” - four passes at 350ºC; “II” - one pass at 370ºC, second pass at 340ºC and third pass at 310ºC. The grain size was reduced about 200 times as a results of ECAP process according “I” and “II” procedure. The grain refinement by ECAP improves significantly the compression yield strength and hardness. The Hall-Petch relationship was confirmed basing on microhardness measurements and the grain size after ECAP. The Mg24(Tb,Sm)5 and Mg41(Sm,Tb)5 particles smaller than 150 nm are located mainly at grain and subgrain boundaries and they prevent grain growth during ECAP processing. The microstructure evolution during ECAP can be described as dynamic recovery and continuous and discontinuous dynamic recrystallization.

The results of the research of structure and properties of a composite compact from 13 Cr – 2 Мо and BN powders depending on the concentration of boron nitride are provided. It is shown that adding boron nitride in an amount of more than 2% by weight of the charge mixture leads to the formation of extended grain boundary porosity and finely dispersed BN layers in the structure, which provides a high level of wearing properties of the material. The effect of boron nitride concentration on physical and mechanical properties is determined. It was found that the introduction of a small amount of BN (up to 2 % by weight) into the compacts leads to an increase in plasticity, bending strength, and toughness by reducing the friction forces between the metal powder particles during pressing and a more complete grain boundary diffusion process during sintering. The formation of a regulated structure-phase composition of powder compacts of 13 Cr – 2 Mо – BN when the content of boron nitride changes in them allows us to provide the specified physical and mechanical properties in a wide range. The obtained results of studies of the physical and mechanical characteristics of the developed material allow us to reasonably choose the necessary composition of the powder compact for sealing structures of the flow part of steam turbines, depending on their operating conditions.
