The present study focuses on an innovative approach in measuring the mechanical oscillations of pre-loaded Achilles tendon by using Mechanotendography (MTG) during application of a short yet powerful mechanical pressure impact. This was applied on the forefoot from the plantar side in direction of dorsiflexion, while the subject stood on the ball of the forefoot on one leg. Participants with Achilles tendinopathy (AT; n = 10) were compared to healthy controls (Con; n = 10). Five trials were performed on each side of the body. For evaluation, two intervals after the impulse began (0-100ms; 30-100ms) were cut from the MTG and pressure raw signals. The intrapersonal variability between the five trials in both intervals were evaluated using the arithmetic mean and coefficient of variation of the mean correlation (Spearman rank correlation) and the normalized averaged mean distances, respectively. The AT-group showed a significantly reduced variability in MTG compared to the Con-group (from p = 0.006 to p = 0.028 for different parameters). The 95% confidence intervals (CI) of MTG results were disjoint, whereas the 95% CIs of the pressure signals were similar (p = 0.192 to p = 0.601). We suggest from this work that the variability of mechanical tendon oscillations could be an indicative parameter of an altered Achilles tendon functionality.

Abstract Objective The objective of the study was to evaluate percutaneous needle electrolysis (PNE) and exercise with eccentric overload on the tendon body in chronic Achilles tendinopathy. Material and Methods An experimental study involving seven subjects with a total of seven tendons with a medical diagnosis of chronic tendinopathy on the body of the Achilles tendon. A sample of five men (71.43%) and two women (28.57%) with a laterality of five right tendons and two left tendons. The mean age was 34 years (SD: 7.22), 42.86% of the sample was active, practicing regular sports activity (57.14%) at the amateur level. All tendons had over six-weeks evolution. Pain was assessed using the visual analogue scale (VAS) and functionality was analyzed using the VISA-A scale, whereas tendon structure was evaluated using musculoskeletal ultrasound. All subjects belonged to the same group and were applied the same treatment; three sessions of PNE, additionally, eccentric exercise was added every 48 hours after each intervention. This involved a total of six eccentric sessions. A seven-day period was allowed between the first and second session of PNE, whereas between the second and third session, 14 days were allowed. Results In the initial evaluation, the VAS score was 7.14 points (SD: 0.83) and the VISA-A scale was 34.86 points (SD: 3.72). On the ultrasound examination, the VAS presented changes as a degenerative process. After five weeks, the values on the VAS scale decreased by 75.4% and on the VISA-A scale they increased by 35.2%. Conclusions The combined programs of PNE plus eccentric exercises are an effective treatment for chronic tendinopathy of the Achilles tendon body.

AbstractVery little research has focused on the subject of lying in everyday life, despite the benefits such study would provide. In this paper, we reanalyze the data from Murai’s work in 2000, which examined the telling of lies and the perception of being lied to in daily life by using a diary method in which participants recorded events in a diary for a certain period of time as directed by the researcher. Our reanalysis led us to three key findings. First, we found one prolific liar in the data. This is relevant because previous deception studies have only discussed the existence of “a few prolific liars” in Asia through one-shot surveys, whereas we confirm it through the reanalysis of the data collected by the diary method. Second, we did not find any significant rank correlation between the number of lies told and the number of perceptions of lies, nor was there evidence of any “prolific lie perceivers”. Third, we found that the mean percentage of the subjective accuracy of recording was roughly 80%, which demonstrates the accuracy of the diary method. In this paper, we report our findings, discuss the limitations (in particular, the small sample size), and mention future research directions using the diary method in deception studies.

Introduction: Achilles FQ-associated tendinopathy was first reported by Bailey et al. in 1983. Since then, nearly 200 case reports related to FQ-associated tendon injury have been published, as well as some case control and cohort studies. Today, drug-induced tendinopathy is accepted as a class effect of FQ. The Achilles tendon is affected in 90% of cases of FQ-related tendinopathy and rupture. Objective: To evaluate current evidence for the association between fluoroquinolones and Achilles tendinopathy and to identify associated risk factors that increase the incidence of this complication. Methods: We conducted a computerized search of the relevant scientific literature from 1988 to 2018 using electronic databases, including PubMed, Medline and Scopus. The search terms were fluoroquinolone-related tendinopathy. Eligible studies were any available reports of fluoroquinolone-related tendinopathy (tendinitis, tendon pain, or rupture); animal and human histologic studies were included. Data collected included any cases of fluoroquinolone-related tendinopathy, the particular tendon affected, type of FQ, dosage, and concomitant risk factors. Results: The references selected were reviewed by all authors and judged based on their contribution to the body of knowledge on this topic. The conduct and validity of any clinical studies were carefully considered, and the outcomes of management protocols were carefully scrutinized. Case reports mentioning a specific association with the condition that were thought to be relevant to the discussion were included. Only papers that made a significant contribution to understanding of this condition were included in the review. Thus, a total of 560 abstracts were screened, 79 of which were directly related to FQ-associated Achilles tendinopathy or tendon rupture. Conclusion: The association between the use of fluoroquinolone antibiotics and Achilles tendon disorders is well-established in the medical literature. We found that male gender, advanced age, normal BMI, chronic renal failure and concurrent use of corticosteroids increases the risk of Achilles tendon pathology. Caution should be exercised during the utilization of this antibiotic class in patients with these characteristics

Owing to the indirectness of the methods hitherto used for estimating the quantity of blood pumped out from the left ventricle at each systole, this important factor in all calculations of the work done by the heart has never been satisfactorily determined. Of the later physiologists who have investigated the subject, Volkmann and afterwards Vierordt, from calculations based upon the mean velocity of the stream of blood in the unbranched aorta, obtained the fraction 1/100 as representing the ratio of the average weight of blood ejected at each systole of the left ventricle to the weight of the whole body. Fick, from data obtained by placing the arm in a plethysmograph, and estimating the velocity of the stream of blood in the axillary artery from the increase in volume of the whole arm at each systole of the heart, arrived at a much smaller fraction, about 1/1000 for the ratio between the weight of blood thrown out at each systole and the body weight.

SummaryEvent-related potentials (ERP) are regarded as age dependent. However, it is not known whether this is an intrinsic property of ERP or an extrinsic factor. We designed a setting in which ERP were evoked using a modified oddball paradigm with highly differentiable and detectable target and non-target stimuli. A total of 98 probands were enrolled in this study. We evaluated the latency and amplitude of the P3 component of visually evoked ERP. The mean P3 latency was 294 ± 28 ms and was not related to age (r = –0.089; p = 0.382; Spearman-rank-correlation). The P3 amplitude was related to age in the total sample (r = –0.323; p = 0.001; Spearmanrank-correlation) but not in the probands under the age of 60 years. There were no significant differences regarding sex. Our findings suggest that ERP are not age dependent if highly differentiable and detectable stimuli are used. This should be considered when normal values of ERP are created for clinical use.

This Collaborative Classroom Action Research aimed at enhancing students’ speaking skill through the application of Circle Game. It was conducted in one cycle consisting of two meetings. The subject was the seventh of C class of SMPN 2 Alas Barat consisting of 22 students. The types of data were qualitative (acquiring observation during the learning process) and quantitative (speaking tests). The results qualitatively showed that the implementation of Circle Game enhanced the students’ speaking skills. Such improvement could be seen from their enthusiasm, their interesting feeling in various materials presented by the teacher, their active involvement. In the quantitative findings, the result also showed a higher value of the mean score of the post-test (77.34) rather than the pre-test (75.75). In conclusion, the use of Circle Game can improve students’ speaking skill.

This study presents a research report on improving students’ Learning results on IPA through Video. The objective was to find out whether students’ learning result improved when they are taught by using Video. It was conducted using classroom action research method. The subject of the study was the Grade IV students of SDN 187/IV Kota Jambi which is located on Jln. Adi Sucipto RT 05 Kecamatan Jambi Selatan, and the number of the students were 21 persons. The instruments used were test. In analyzing the data, the mean of the students’ score for the on fisrt sycle was 65,4 (42,85%) and the mean on cycle two was 68,5 (37,15%) and the mean of the third cycle was 81,4 (100%). Then it can be concluded that the use of video on learning IPA can improve the students’ learning result. It is suggested that teachers should use video as one of the media to improve students’ learning result on IPA.Keywords : IPA, students’ learning result, video

This article explores the diversity of British literary responses to Diaghilev's project, emphasising the way in which the subject matter and methodologies of Diaghilev's modernism were sometimes unexpectedly echoed in expressions of contemporary British writing. These discussions emerge both in writing about Diaghilev's work, and, more discretely, when references to the Russian Ballet find their way into the creative writing of the period, serving to anchor the texts in a particular cultural milieu or to suggest contemporary aesthetic problems in the domain of literary aesthetics developing in the period. Figures from disparate fields, including literature, music and the visual arts, brought to their criticism of the Ballets Russes their individual perspectives on its aesthetics, helping to consolidate the sense of its importance in contributing to the inter-disciplinary flavour of modernism across the arts. In the field of literature, not only did British writers evaluate the Ballets Russes in terms of their own poetics, their relationship to experimentation in the novel and in drama, they developed an increasing sense of the company's place in dance history, its choreographic innovations offering material for wider discussions, opening up the potential for literary modernism's interest in impersonality and in the ‘unsayable’, discussions of the body, primitivism and gender.

Lying in ditches, tromping through mud, wedged in urns, trash bins, buried in earth, bodies in Beckett appear anything but capable of acting meaningfully on their environments. Bodies in Beckett seem, rather, synonymous with abjection, brokenness, and passivity—as if the human were overcome by its materiality: odours, pain, foot sores, decreased mobility. To the extent that Beckett's personae act, they act vaguely (wandering) or engage in quasi-obsessive, repetitive tasks: maniacal rocking, rotating sucking stones and biscuits, uttering words evacuated of sense, ceaseless pacing. Perhaps the most vivid dramatization of bodies compelled to meaningless, repetitive movement is Quad (1981), Beckett's ‘ballet’ for television, in which four bodies in hooded robes repeat their series ad infinitum. By 1981, has all possibility for intentional action in Beckett been foreclosed? Are we doomed, as Hamm puts it, to an eternal repetition of the same? (‘Moments for nothing, now as always, time was never and time is over, reckoning closed and story ended.’)This article proposes an alternative reading of bodily abjection, passivity and compulsivity in Beckett, a reading that implies a version of agency more capacious than voluntarism. Focusing on Quad as an illustrative case, I show how, if we shift our focus from the body's diminished possibilities for movement to the imbrication of Beckett's personae in environments (a mound of earth), things, and objects, a different story emerges: rather than dramatizing the impossibility of action, Beckett's work may sketch plans for a more ecological, post-human version of agency, a more collaborative mode of ‘acting’ that eases the divide between the human, the world of inanimate objects, and the earth.Movements such as new materialism and object-oriented ontology challenge hierarchies among subjects, objects and environments, questioning the rigid distinction between animate and inanimate, and the notion of the Anthropocene emphasizes the influence of human activity on social and geological space. A major theoretical challenge that arises from such discourses (including 20th-century challenges to the idea of an autonomous, willing, subject) is to arrive at an account of agency robust enough to survive if not the ‘death of the subject’ then its imbrication in the material and social environment it acts upon. Beckett's treatment of the human body suggests a version of agency that draws strength from a body's interaction with its environment, such that meaning is formed in the nexus between body and world. Using the example of Quad, I show how representations of the body in Beckett disturb the opposition between compulsivity (when a body is driven to move or speak in the absence of intention) and creative invention. In Quad, serial repetition works to create an interface between body and world that is receptive to meanings outside the control of a human will. Paradoxically, compulsive repetition in Beckett, despite its uncomfortable closeness to addiction, harnesses a loss of individual control that proposes a more versatile and ecologically mindful understanding of human action.
