There is an abundance of literature investigating the relationship between self-writing and well-being in cases of trauma or life-changing events, but no such research has assessed the value of keeping a daily diary in promoting small changes, describing an individual’s identity in its slow, but realistic evolution. This study examined how the use of diary as a narration tool contributed to improving a patient’s awareness of his personal emotions and feelings during a course of psychotherapy. It investigated the changes occurring in the prevailing writing style of a 200-page diary written by a patient suffering from hypochondria over a period of two and a half years. Sentences relating to the need for change, to the self, to suffering and to the function attributed to the self-writing activity were analyzed on the basis of specific criteria deriving from dialogical self theory, which conceptualizes ways to adopt new identity positions during the course of change. Respondent validation identified a good correspondence between the findings of the textual analysis and the writer’s own point of view. Results showed an improvement in awareness of moods and feelings. Identity positions became more integrated and writing more enjoyable. These findings demonstrate the potential of innovative use of diary writing as a longitudinal tool for consolidating strategies for change and as an additional means for assessing psychotherapy efficacy. Writing a diary proved effective both in supporting the patient’s personal reflections and changes and in making it easier for him to share his thoughts with the therapist.

The paper presents the results of research related to the examination of the relationship between education that adults undertake in their free time, on the one hand, and the scope, degree and manner in which they self-affirm in their leisure time on the other. By self-affirmation we mean the realization or actualization of oneself as a single being through the degree of satisfaction of various needs relevant from the point of view of personality integration. The notion of self-affirmation understood in this way, viewed in the context of leisure time, represents a constituent of the quality of leisure time in adulthood. Specifically, this paper presents the results related to the examination of the general level of the self-affirmation in leisure time, as well as the contribution of educational activities to self-affirmation in leisure time. The most significant of them advocate the existence of a universal need for self-affirmation in leisure time. More specifically, they concern self-affirmation in the context, of emotional well-being, commitment to the activities, in which adults choose to engage themselves in their leisure time and creativity. According to the dimensions of self-affirmation, the largest number of surveyed participants of educational activites is self-affirmed in the in the cognitive, yet the smallest number, in the emotional sence.

Patients’ low adherence to medical treatment in chronic illnesses is one of the biggest public health problems. Numerous studies attend to the diverse factors associated with patient adherence. However, little research has been done to explore patients’ reasons for non-compliance from their own point of view. In this article, we aim to understand patient non-adherence using dialogical self-theory and qualitative research methods. We interviewed 51 hypertensive patients to explore their anti- and pro-adherence motivations. Results show that most patients adhere and non-adhere to different aspects of treatment programs (medication, exercise, diet) according to the way they construct meaning to those activities. Also, our findings support the notion that patients’ non-adherent behavior aims to preserve important values such as self-esteem, autonomy, affiliation, well-being, freedom, and health (or that more adherence is not worth the extra effort). We discuss the therapeutic relevance of empathically understanding patients’ worldview and implicit beliefs.

In the development of the relationship between the artist and his artistic creation, the deconstruction of concepts and ideas within the scope of artistic praxis leads to the reflection of the crucial role that the artist has in the conception and meaning of the work. His creative production, in turn, appropriates not only the expressive force of the author to assert itself as an artistic creation, but can also assume to be the reflection of the self, its identity and materializes in the form of self-portrait. The self-portrait expands the artist’s interiority, externalizing concerns and questions, and conveys a subjective point of view about himself and his view of art. But how does self-portrait contribute to self-awareness? And how does the artist reveal himself and communicate beyond his appearance?Based on these questions, the objective of this paper is to provide a reflection on self-portrait presenting the results of an artistic installation project that involved photographic language in the form of self-portrait and experimental video to represent feelings of disquiet. Influences such as Cindy Sherman, Lais Pontes or Francesca Woodman, whose creations approach the self-portrait in a not only original, but critical style, stand out.It is a project of academic and artistic nature supported by theoretical foundations. The results allow us to conclude that the artistic installation, which began by presenting a self-portraying self-seeking identity, frees itself from its creator to enhance multiple variable interpretations depending on the observer’s attention.

Abstract: The commentary presents an epistemological reflection about Dialogical Self theory. First, the theoretical issues of DS about the relationship between individuality, alterity and society are discussed, elaborating on the articles of this special issue. Then, it is presented the argument of psychologist's ontological fallacy, that is the attitude to moving from the study of processes to the study of psychological entities. Finally a development toward new research directions is proposed, focusing on the study of higher psychological functions and processes, taking into account complex symbolic products of human activity and developing psychological imagination.

This study aims to clarify the roles of immersion and distancing (that is, reflection on an experience from an egocentric point of view or as an observer, respectively) on therapeutic change analyzing i) the evolution of these two perspectives across the resolution of a clinical problem, and ii) the relationship between immersion/distancing with symptoms and emotional arousal. We extracted all the passages of speech pertaining to the most relevant clinical problem of a good outcome case of depression undergoing cognitive-behavioral therapy. We assessed the distancing/immersion of these extracts using the Measure of Immersed and Distanced Speech, and emotional arousal with the Client Emotional Arousal Scale-III. The symptoms were assessed from the Beck Depression Inventory-II and Outcome Questionnaire-10.2. Immersion was associated with symptoms and negative emotions, while distancing was associated with clinical well being and positive emotions. Immersion was still dominant when depressive symptoms were below the clinical threshold. Clinical change was associated with a decrease in immersion and an increase in distancing. The dominance of immersion does not necessarily indicate a bad outcome.

The aim of this study is to investigate the longitudinal influence of self-esteem on romantic and coparental relationship quality. The data were drawn from the German Family Panel, pairfam. Parents ( n couples = 2,364) were assessed three times over 4 years. The results indicated that romantic and coparental quality decreased over time, while self-esteem remained stable. The self-esteem of both parents predicted initial romantic and coparental quality. Additionally, mothers’ self-esteem reduced the decline in romantic quality. Finally, romantic quality mediated the relationship between parents’ self-esteem and coparental quality. These results suggest that self-esteem might be a resource for the parental couple and even for the family unit, as romantic and coparental quality are key elements for the well-being of both parent and child.

This article investigate the relationship between financial distress, well-being and employment status. Using several indicators of financial distress and of well-being, our econometric analysis shows that the negative association between financial distress and well-being is moderated by employment status in the sense that financial problems are more strongly associated with poor well-being for the self-employed compared to the wage-employed. Hence, when self-employed workers find themselves in a situation of financial distress, the negative consequences for their well-being are more severe. This is found to hold both for the self-employed with and without employees.

Based on a simultaneous husbands and wives survey, the article examines the relationship between the desired and actual level of per capita family income (along with housing conditions) in connection with the spouses’ socio-demographic characteristics. Most families with three and more children are characterized by low incomes, which require the introduction of material compensation as part of social policy. On the other hand, the task of family and demographic policy is to increase the current family need for two children, for which economic incentives are not enough. In this regard, noneconomic measures of influence are required; hence, the focus is on the analysis of value-motivational aspects of behavior, that is spousal self-assessment of desired and actual wellbeing. An increase in the degree of the gap between them first increases reproductive orientations and actual childbearing, and then lowers them. Socially significant is the critical value of the gap - the excess of the desired income over the actual up to three times, which determines the orientation of family behavior. Taking into account this empirical, well-grounded relationship is important from a practical point of view.

Background Understanding the relationship between personal values, well-being, and health-related behavior could facilitate the development of engaging, effective digital interventions for promoting well-being and the healthy lifestyles of citizens. Although the associations between well-being and values have been quite extensively studied, the knowledge about the relationship between health behaviors and values is less comprehensive. Objective The aim of this study was to assess retrospectively the associations between self-reported values and commitment to values combined with self-reported well-being and health behaviors from a large cross-sectional dataset. Methods We analyzed 101,130 anonymous responses (mean age 44.78 years [SD 13.82]; 78.88%, 79,770/101,130 women) to a Finnish Web survey, which were collected as part of a national health promotion campaign. The data regarding personal values were unstructured, and the self-reported value items were classified into value types based on the Schwartz value theory and by applying principal component analysis. Logistic and multiple linear regression were used to explore the associations of value types and commitment to values with well-being factors (happiness, communal social activity, work, and family-related distress) and health behaviors (exercise, eating, smoking, alcohol consumption, and sleep). Results Commitment to personal values was positively related to happiness (part r2=0.28), communal social activity (part r2=0.09), and regular exercise (part r2=0.06; P<.001 for all). Health, Power (social status and dominance), and Mental balance (self-acceptance) values had the most extensive associations with health behaviors. Regular exercise, healthy eating, and nonsmoking increased the odds of valuing Health by 71.7%, 26.8%, and 40.0%, respectively (P<.001 for all). Smoking, unhealthy eating, irregular exercise, and increased alcohol consumption increased the odds of reporting Power values by 27.80%, 27.78%, 24.66%, and 17.35%, respectively (P<.001 for all). Smoking, unhealthy eating, and irregular exercise increased the odds of reporting Mental balance values by 20.79%, 16.67%, and 15.37%, respectively (P<.001 for all). In addition, lower happiness levels increased the odds of reporting Mental balance and Power values by 24.12% and 20.69%, respectively (P<.001 for all). Conclusions The findings suggest that commitment to values is positively associated with happiness and highlight various, also previously unexplored, associations between values and health behaviors.
