The metaphor ‘being crucified with Christ’ in sociohistorical contextCrucifixion is a concept that is far removed from the experience and understanding of the 21stcentury post-modern man. To understand the power of the message of the cross, one first has to determine what the meaning of crucifixion was to the person in antiquity. The relevant facts about the cross and crucifixion were intertwined with social and political realities of the time. This article endeavours to construct a valid and probable sociohistorical context for the metaphor [foreign font omitted] (‘I am being crucified with Christ’). The relevant terminology as well as the practice of crucifixion in ancient nations also receive attention. Possible differences in the shape of the cross and crucifixion procedures are being debated. The article also tries to conceive of the shame and rejection the condemned had to endure. The sociohistorical implications of the preposition ‘with’ will be discussed to indicate its meaning to the person from ancient times. What would such a person have understood and experienced when told that he had to be crucified with Christ? To any individual from that social and historical context such a statement would have immediately conjured up a clear picture of the price that was to be paid. It would have meant the renunciation of everything that was dear and essential in the life of that person; rejection of family and friends; inhuman pain, both physically and emotionally, as well as the knowledge that the decision was irrevocable.

The Church of Ireland in the later seventeenth century faced many challenges. After two decades of war and effective suppression, the church in 1660 had to reestablish itself as the national church of the kingdom of Ireland in the face of opposition from both Catholics and Dissenters, who together made up nearly ninety percent of the island's population. While recent scholarship has illuminated Irish protestantism as a social group during this period, the theology of the established church remains unexamined in its historical context. This article considers the theological arguments used by members of the church hierarchy in sermons and tracts written between 1660 and 1689 as they argued that the Church of Ireland was both a true apostolic church and best suited for the security and salvation of the people of Ireland. Attention to these concerns shows that the social and political realities of being a minority church compelled Irish churchmen to focus on basic arguments for an episcopal national establishment. It suggests that this focus on first principles allowed the church a certain amount of ecclesiological flexibility that helped it survive later turbulence such as the non-jurors controversy of 1689–1690 fairly intact.

Ideologies can legitimate inequality and undermine collective action. Yet research overlooks the effects culture-specific ideologies—ideologies that develop within a specific sociohistorical context—have on collective action support. We address this oversight by arguing that two culture-specific ideologies that deny the contemporary relevance of past injustices (historical negation) and reject Indigenous culture from the nation’s identity (symbolic exclusion) undermine support for collective action on behalf of the disadvantaged (namely, Māori—New Zealand’s Indigenous population). As predicted, historical negation and symbolic exclusion had independent negative cross-lagged effects on collective action support amongst Māori ( N = 561) and New Zealand European ( N = 4,104) participants. The cross-lagged effects of collective action support on historical negation and symbolic exclusion, however, were nonsignificant. Thus, the relationships these culture-specific ideologies have with collective action support are unidirectional. Our results highlight the need to incorporate culture-specific ideologies into models of collective action.

To commemorate the Christian bimillennium, the Canadian Museum of Civilization opened an exhibit entitled Under the Sign of the Cross: Creative Expressions of Christianity in Canada. Although one of the goals of the display was to illustrate the "impact" of Christianity on Canada, the exhibit was noticeably lacking historical context. This article explores the curatorial principles that guided the planning and execution of the exhibit. It argues that the lack of attention to an historical narrative was directly related to assumptions underlying the collection of material objects of religion and an attempt to redeem a "sacred" status for the artefacts on display. Unfortunately, this loss of context also meant that many of the original multiple meanings embodied by these material objects of religion were also lost.

The essential consideration is whether hermeneutics as an alternative approach can provide a dialogue between the texts and reality. This is library research, in which the data sources obtained through various written works, both in the form of books and journals. The study is descriptive qualitative that provides a clear picture and systematic about the methodology of Islamic legal thought Fazlur Rahman understandings.  To synchronize his background with interpretations, then used a normative theological approach, namely an approach that emphasizes form religious symbols originating from the Quran and sunnah text. The double movement hermeneutic theory is his effort in dialoguing between text and context. He appreciates history and adapts developments in every space and time. He tried to do a two-way movement. First, moving from the context of reality to the historical context of texts. Second, moving from the context of historical facts to the context of contemporary reality. Errors in interpreting text often occur due to the separation between the text from its context. In these circumstances, the double movement theory finds its relevance in making the Quran capable of dialogue with every dynamic that occurs. In this way, the text is always alive and as if it was revealed at this time. It contributes to the development of a paradigm of religious moderation. The double movement has strong historical roots in the science of the Quran, including asbab al-nuzul, makkiyah-madaniyah, and nasikh-mansukh.

The hermeneutics issues as an alternative interpreting method is a new concern in Islamic World; however its application has existed since long time ago. Generally, Hermeneutics in the religious context especially in Al Qur’an and Al Hadits has a specific purpose to find out the original meaning from a text by using it in the socio-historical context. Yusuf Qardhawi as one of contemporary scholars takes “in between” position in comprehending Hadits or Sunnah. He applies basic principles, characteristics, and essential rules to study it appropriately. He also is considered as a representative from the reformers who contribute their thoughts for Islamic development in order that the religious texts can be more harmonious along with time development but they don’t lose their authenticity. Qardhawi’s methodology of hermeneutics thought in Hadits always connects between norma tive texts as the law source and their historicity in the socio-historical context in the local muslim community. He sets out his ideas and purposes from the texts of hadits themselves and the tools and applications are adapted with the sociohistorical context of local community.
