Background: The natural antioxidants have an important role in the prevention of many diseases. The aim of study is to investigate phytochemical components, antioxidant activity and acute oral toxicity of Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) fruit peel (PFP) extract. Materials and methods: Phytochemicals of PFP were determined by qualitative chemical tests, thin layer chromatography, total polyphenol and flavonoid contents. The PFP extract was evaluated for antioxidant activity by DPPH assay and MDA assay. In vivo acute oral toxicity test was conducted using Karber-Behrens method to determine LD50. Results: Results illustrated that PFP mainly contains flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, triterpenes, saponins, and coumarins. PFP extract exhibited the total polyphenol and flavonoid contents with 189.97 mg gallic acid equivalent/g dry weight and 9.42 mg quercetin equivalent/g dry weight, respectively. The DPPH free radical scavenging and anti-lipid peroxidation activities of PFP extract were expressed with IC50 value of 4.80 μg/mL and 0.38 μg/ mL, sequentially. Simultaneously, the Dmax (the maximum dose administered to mice that no toxicity was observed) of PFP extract was determined to be 21.28 g/kg, equivalent to 35.64 g dried herb. Conclusion: The PFP extract is relatively safe and revealed high antioxidant activity. The main aim of this study was to screen the selected fruit peel extracts and their polyherbal mixture (PHM) for hepatoprotective activity. Male wistar albino rats (180-200 g), divided into 12 groups after induction of hepatotoxicity, were treated with selected fruit peel extracts and PHM and at the end of 14th day blood and liver samples were collected and analysed. The aqueous peel extract of Malus pumila was a better hepatoprotective among the selected peel extracts. The activities might be due to the conditioning of hepatocytes by protecting the integrity of the membrane from CCl4 induced leakage of serum markers into circulation. All the selected plant extracts and PHM were shown to revert back the liver enzymes to the normal values in diseased rats in a dose dependent manner. In conclusion, the selected fruit peel extracts and poly herbal mixture can be a potent hepatoprotective agent due to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions.

Jaboticaba is a fruit from a native tree to Brazil,Plinia peruviana. Jaboticaba peels are an important source of antioxidant molecules such as phenolic compounds. This study aimed to evaluatein vitrothe activity of a hydroalcoholic extract of jaboticaba fruit peels (HEJFP) in wound healing processes and antioxidant activity in murine fibroblasts (L929 cell line). HEJFP concentrations (0.5, 1, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, and 200 µg/mL) were tested in MTT assay and cell proliferation was verified at 100 µg/mL after 24 h and at 25, 50, and 100 µg/mL after 48 h of extract exposure. Evaluation of antioxidant activity was performed at 0.5, 5, 25, 50, and 100 µg/mL HEJFP concentrations. Cell treatment with HEJFP at 25, 50, and 100 µg/mL for 24 h followed by H2O2exposure for 3 h showed a strong cytoprotective effect.In vitroscratch wound healing assay indicated that none of tested HEJFP concentrations (0.5, 5, 25, 50, and 100 µg/mL) were capable of increasing migration rate after 12 h of incubation. These results demonstrate a positive effect of HEJFP on the wound healing process on L929 fibroblasts cell line, probably due to the antioxidant activity exhibited by phytochemicals in the extract.

Introduction: To investigate the preventive effect of Phaseolus vulgaris seed coats on pentylenetetrazole-induced kindling and behavioral comorbidities. Material and Methods: Thirty Wistar albino rats were categorized into five groups. The first group received regular saline (0.9 % w/v NaCl) p.o.; the second group received PTZ (35 mg/kg b.w.) i.p.; the third group received valproic acid (200 mg/kg b.w.) p.o.; the fourth group received P. vulgaris extract (100 mg/kg b.w.) p.o.; the fifth group received P. vulgaris extract (200 mg/kg b.w.) p.o. on an alternate day for 21 days. PTZ improved lipid peroxidase levels, decreased Glutathione level, decreased superoxide dismutase activity, increased Nitric Oxide level. Result: This study revealed that P. vulgaris (Hydroalcoholic extract) increased the anti-oxidant level of both 100 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg compared to the PTZ category. Histopathological findings revealed that the hippocampal section of the brain of rats receiving P. vulgaris extract had improved relative to the receiving PTZ group. Conclusion: Based on the result, it is proposed that Phaseolus vulgaris has anti-oxidant properties. This is useful for the treatment of epilepsy.

The gravity of the impact of drug induced nephrotoxicity is more prominent in society. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the potential of hydroalcoholic extract of seeds of Sorghum bicolor against cisplatin and doxorubicin- induced nephrotoxicity in Wistar albino rats. The nephrotoxicity was modeled by intraperitoneal injection of cisplatin (5 mg/kg b.w.) in cisplatin model and doxorubicin (15 mg/kg b.w.) in doxorubicin-induced model in rats. Nephroprotection of hydroalcoholic extract of seeds of S. bicolor was evaluated at two different doses of 200 and 400mg/kg b.w. The nephroprotective activity was assessed by the determination of various serum and urinary parameters, anti-oxidant studies, histological and immunohistochemical studies. The results indicated that injection of cisplatin and doxorubicin led to marked nephrotoxicity in animals. Treatment with extract in cisplatin-induced model resulted in significant nephroprotective activity in a curative regimen whereas in prophylactic regimen the extract prevented the induction of nephrotoxicity only up to a considerable level. But the extract failed to attenuate the doxorubicin induced nephrotoxicity, as evident by biochemical, histological and immunohistochemical studies. From the findings, it is concluded that the seeds of S. bicolor can be used as a novel approach in the treatment of cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity.
