Use of southern parents in a short-season soybean breeding program is facilitated with long-day screening

Elite northern-by-southern soybean crosses may increase genetic diversity while maintaining performance. The objective of this study was to test a long-day selection method which would generate populations containing southern germplasm adapted in maturity to short-season areas. Long-daylength-insensitive lines (MG 00 to 0) were crossed to southern determinate cultivars (MG IV to VI) and of 909 F2 plants grown under 20-h incandescent long daylength (ILD), 34 were ILD-insensitive and non-dwarf. Progeny from selected ILD-insensitive plants were intermated and the resulting modified double cross F2 populations were grown in the field and were of late MG I adaptation. The ILD-screening technique was useful for generating early-maturing populations from parents with divergent maturity. Key words: Genetic diversity, long-daylength insensitivity, soybean breeding

Feasibility of selection of sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] lines in a long–season environment for early maturity and yield was studied. Fifty-seven male lines from three different origins and F1 progenies produced by crossing the lines to three early-maturing female lines were used for these evaluations. Lines selected for yield had highest yield in a long-season environment but showed no yield advantage in short-season areas. There were lines from all three origins which should be useful in the locations tested. Selection for earliness and yield appeared feasible in a long season area. Abstract Okra yields are low in West and Central Africa and factors including narrow genetic base of available germplasm have been implicated. An assessment of genetic variability among germplasm from various sources and knowledge of trait contributions to these variations is crucial to the success of okra breeding program. Eighteen okra accessions were evaluated during the 2020 cropping season in Nigeria to assess the genotypes for genetic diversity, group the accessions into clusters and identify traits that chiefly accounted for the variations among the genotypes. Data obtained were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA), metroglyph and principal component analyses (PCA). ANOVA revealed significant accession mean squares for majority of the measured traits. Metroglyph analysis grouped the accessions into four clusters with members of Cluster IV generally high-yielding, early-maturing and short genotypes. NGB00353 and NGB00356 that were among genotypes with high total index scores were members of Cluster IV. The first four principal components (PCs) accounted for 80% of the total observed variation. PC1 with the highest discriminatory power was loaded with days to budding, internode length, pod yield.plot−1 and the number of pods.plant−1. The variation within and between clusters could be explored in okra breeding program.

Abstract Background The characterization of genetic diversity and population differentiation for maize inbred lines from breeding programs is of great value in assisting breeders in maintaining and potentially increasing the rate of genetic gain. In our study, we characterized a set of 187 tropical maize inbred lines from the public breeding program of the Universidade Federal de Viçosa (UFV) in Brazil based on 18 agronomic traits and 3,083 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) markers to evaluate whether this set of inbred lines represents a panel of tropical maize inbred lines for association mapping analysis and investigate the population structure and patterns of relationships among the inbred lines from UFV for better exploitation in our maize breeding program. Results Our results showed that there was large phenotypic and genotypic variation in the set of tropical maize inbred lines from the UFV maize breeding program. We also found high genetic diversity (GD = 0.34) and low pairwise kinship coefficients among the maize inbred lines (only approximately 4.00 % of the pairwise relative kinship was above 0.50) in the set of inbred lines. The LD decay distance over all ten chromosomes in the entire set of maize lines with r2 = 0.1 was 276,237 kb. Concerning the population structure, our results from the model-based STRUCTURE and principal component analysis methods distinguished the inbred lines into three subpopulations, with high consistency maintained between both results. Additionally, the clustering analysis based on phenotypic and molecular data grouped the inbred lines into 14 and 22 genetic divergence clusters, respectively. Conclusions Our results indicate that the set of tropical maize inbred lines from UFV maize breeding programs can comprise a panel of tropical maize inbred lines suitable for a genome-wide association study to dissect the variation of complex quantitative traits in maize, mainly in tropical environments. In addition, our results will be very useful for assisting us in the assignment of heterotic groups and the selection of the best parental combinations for new breeding crosses, mapping populations, mapping synthetic populations, guiding crosses that target highly heterotic and yielding hybrids, and predicting untested hybrids in the public breeding program UFV.

Kolaka, which is located in Southeast Sulawesi, has long been known as one of cacao production centers in Indonesia. Therefore, many different cacao germplasms can be found in this region. The study aimed to evaluate genetic diversity and relationships of 12 cacao genotypes collected from Kolaka. Genomic DNA was extracted by using a modified CTAB method. Meanwhile, genetic diversity was analyzed based on 16 SSR markers, which then separated by 6% non-denaturing polyacryl-amide gel electrophoresis. The result showed that all of those markers, 14 markers exhibited polymorphism and subsequently used for data analysis using NTSYS and PowerMarker program. About 70 different alleles were generated from 12 cacao genotypes analyzed with an average of 5 alleles per locus. Average value of polymorphism information content (PIC) resulted in this study was 0.59. The cluster analysis using UPGMA method based on the genetic similarity coefficient revealed that all cacao genotypes were separated into three major groups. The first group consisted of five cacao genotypes, the second one held four cacao genotypes, whereas the third group contained three genotypes. This result indicates that three genotypes that clustered separately from the others could be used as a good clonal candidate for cacao breeding program. The information resulted from this present study would be useful for future cacao breeding program, especially in efforts to release a new variety.

Studies have found that growing maize for grain on light low-humus soils of the left-Bank Polesie of Ukraine wih the use of microelements on the increased background of mineral nutrition provided the best indicators of economic efficiency. It is recommended to sow early- maturing (80 %) and mid-maturing- (20 %) hybrids with FAO 150-250 on the background of mineral fertilizers N120P60K60, applying herbicide MaizeTer power in the 3-5-leaf phase of a crop and fulfil out-off-root spraying crops with complex preparations “Rosaliq Aquatic” or ” Germ corn “. Genetic diversity in 31 potato genotypes (parents and their hybrid progenies) was determined using multivariate analysis. Cluster analysis revealed that the parents and their hybrid progenies could be grouped into five different clusters. The maximum number of genotypes were included in clusters II and V. Cluster V had maximum and cluster I had minimum intra-cluster distance. Cluster mean showed wide range of variation for several characters among single as well as multi-genotypic clusters. Biochemical characterizations of 64 pointedgourds were done using three isozyme viz., acid phosphatase, peroxidase and glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase. A wide range of diversity among the gremplasm based on their acid phosphatase, peroxidase and glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase isoenzyme banding patterns were observed. In respect of isoenzyme activity; 8 acid phosphatase, 7 peroxidase and 9 glutamate oxaloacetate transminase electrophoretic zymotypes were formed by 19, 11, and 19 bands at different Rf values varying from 0.19 to 0.82, 0.38 to 0.69 and 0.15 to 0.95, respectively. The wide range of similarity co-efficient of 0.0-80.0, 0.0-66.0, and 0.0-80.0 as found among the electrophoretic patterns in acid phosphatase, peroxidase, and glutamate oxaloacetate transminase, respectively, indicating wide genetic diversity among the accessions. Based on the polymorphic activity of these three enzymes, 27 combinations of electrophoretic zymotypes were identified, each of which can he equated to genotypes. Each of the groups consisted of one to eight genotypes. Sixty four accessions of pointed gourd were grouped into 12 clusters.
