Levels of allozymic diversity in diploid and tetraploid Vaccinium sect. Cyanococcus (blueberries)

Levels of allozymic diversity were examined in native Michigan populations of diploid Vaccinium myrtilloides, and the tetraploids, V. angustifolium and V. corymbosum. Plants from three populations of each species were included in the analysis. Levels of heterozygosity and the number of alleles were averaged over seven polymorphic isozyme loci within both populations and species. As has been found in other studies that compared closely related diploid and tetraploid species, the level of heterozygosity and number of alleles per locus were noticeably lower in the diploid V. myrtilloides (21.7%; 2.9) than in the tetraploids, V. angustifolium (57.1%; 3.4) and V. corymbosum (75.6%; 3.6). The average level of heterozygosity was almost 20% higher in V. corymbosum than V. angustifolium. These two tetraploid species may face distinct selective pressures or have differences in outcrossing rates. Closed flower buds and flowers at full bloom of Vaccinium angustifolium Ait. were collected from the field and histologically examined after severe spring frosts. Prior to anthesis, blackened ovarian placentae in closed buds were the only damaged tissues evident; placental damage may interfere with both seed and fruit set. Self pollen of Vaccinium corymbosum germinates as well as outcross (compatible) pollen from the same population and more rapidly than compatible pollen from more distant populations. When a mixture of self and compatible pollen, either from the same or incontiguous populations, is applied to the stigma, the time required for berry ripening is significantly reduced compared with compatible pollen alone, although seed set also decreases significantly. Adding compatible pollen from different pollen donors significantly increased seed set but also increased the time for berry maturation by 5 days. Self pollen in conjunction with compatible pollen resulted in a 50% loss of viable seed production and an 8% gain in berry maturation time. Self-pollination resulted in embryo abortion in V. corymbosum. Key words: pollination, Vaccinium, seed set, outcrossing.

Monilinia vaccinii-corymbosi (Reade) Honey is an economically important pathogen of lowbush blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium Aiton) which causes blighting of leaves and flowers and mummification of fruits. This study was conducted to determine if infection of lowbush blueberry gynoecia occurs through colonization of the stigma. Sections of gynoecia inoculated with conidia were examined by brightfield microscopy. Conidia germinated on the stigmatic surface 1–3 d following inoculation to form hyphae winch invaded the stylar canal and other tissue down to the ovules. The infection pathway observed was identical to that of pollen tubes following pollination. After invasion of the ovary fungal colonization continued until the entire fruit wall was colonized with mycelium. Key words: Mummy berry, stigma colonization, pseudosclerotium

The accumulation of copper and nickel in plant tissues and galls of Hemadas nubilipennis on lowbush blueberry near an ore smelter at Sudbury, Ontario, was investigated. Concentrations of these metals in the root, stem, and leaf tissue decline logarithmically with increasing distance from the Sudbury smelter. The pattern of accumulation for copper and nickel in the various tissues was root > stem > leaf > berry; however, metal differences in these tissues were not as great in plants farther from the smelter. The root tissue is the primary site of accumulation of these metals when environmental levels of copper and nickel are high. The highest concentrations of copper and nickel were found in the galls, indicating that gall tissues act as a strong physiological sink for micronutrients and redirect nutrients from the host plant. Small experimental plots in mixed-wood stands of the Acadian Forest were burned in the spring, summer, and autumn to obtain an estimate of the regrowth potential of common forest understory species. The number of stems was measured before burning and then monthly for 5 months thereafter. Supportive experiments on seasonal transplanting were conducted at the same time to determine regrowth potential after interspecific competition had been removed. Regrowth potential of species varied among seasonal burning treatments as expected and was strongest for Maianthemum canadense, Vaccinium myrtilloides, Andromeda glaucophylla, Vaccinium angustifolium, Viburnum cassinoides, and Betula populifolia. These species, which showed a 10-fold increase in stem number, could compete successfully with tree seedling number and composition and thus ultimately alter forest stand composition.

Data collected by Hall and Aadlers (1963) on the white-fruited trait were used to determine whether Vaccinium angustifolium is an allopolyploid displaying disomic inheritance or an autopolyploid with tetrasomic inheritance. Chi square tests for goodness-of-fit were non-significant for both models in all crosses, but the probabilities were higher in two of them for tetrasomic inheritance. Cryoanalytical scanning electron microscopy was used to examine cellular concentrations of K, P, S, Mg, Ca, Fe, Cu, Ni, and Au in a planed section of an insect gall induced by Hemadas nubilipennis on shoots of lowbush blueberry. Levels of K varied throughout tissues of the gall, with the highest levels within the cytoplasmically dense nutritive cells lining the larval chambers, storage nutritive cells, and peridermal cells. It is postulated that K increases the osmotic potential and size of nutritive cells, thereby facilitating larval feeding. Nutritive cells also contained elevated levels of P and S. Levels of Cu, Ni, Fe, and Au were elevated in epidermal tissues, especially near the stomata. Introduction. Satisfaction is a positive feeling, perceived subjectively. Assessment of life satisfaction is undertaken by comparing your own situation with the standards you set, your goals, objectives. Therefore, the measurement of satisfaction is based on individual criteria specific to each person. Aim. The study aims to determine satisfaction with life among nurses working in neurological wards. Material and Methods. The study was conducted in a group of 130 nurses working in neurological wards of hospitals in the Lublin Province. The vast majority of the study group constituted women (93.80%). Most respondents were aged between 36–50 years old (43.08%). The research used a standardized research tool: The Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS). Results. The examined group of neurological nurses assessed their satisfaction with life at an average level (20.66 ± 5.72 points). After converting points into sten values, the average was 5.56 ± 2.03 sten. Significant statistical differences in the assessment of life satisfaction were found in the material situation. The higher assessment was provided by nurses who were satisfied with their financial situation (21.70 points). Conclusions. The assessment of satisfaction with life among neurological nurses was at an average level. Selfassessment of the financial situation significantly differentiated the assessment of life satisfaction in the group of surveyed nurses.
