Summary A preliminary study to investigate the possibility of utilizing condensates and tailwater from the low temperature vacuum pan evaporation of skim milk for evaporating plant uses was made. The results indicated that the utilization of these condensates and tailwaters for various plant purposes is possible and should provide a readily available, safe and sanitary water source if adequate steps such as quality monitoring and treatment are taken to insure that the highest quality of water is retained and used. The use of tailwater as a heat exchange medium on a single pass basis should require only quality control monitoring. However, condensate or tailwater which is to be used for other purposes should be aerated and may need additional treatment to prevent the development of tastes, odors, growths, corrosion, and scale formation.

Psychrotrophic and mesophilic lactic streptococci were isolated from commercial cultured buttermilk to determine their potential effect on the quality of this product. These isolates consisted primarily of Streptococcus lactis subsp. diacetylactis, with S. lactis, Streptococcus cremoris, and Leuconostoc spp. also being present. Psychrotrophic isolates of S. lactis subsp. diacetylactis were compared to mesophilic isolates in regard to their ability to grow and reduce diacetyl in acidified milk (pH 4.7) incubated at 7°C. There was no significant difference detected in the ability of the two groups to reduce diacetyl (P<.05). The mesophilic isolates grew more rapidly in acidified refrigerated milk than did the psychrotrophs, indicating that the psychrotrophic isolates were more acid sensitive. The psychrotrophic isolates exhibited generation times of 9 to 11 h when grown in skim milk (pH 6.7) at 7°C. Both psychrotrophic and mesophilic strains of S. lactis subsp. diacetylactis could rapidly reduce diacetyl in refrigerated acidified milk. The results of this study suggest that procedures for selection of starter cultures for buttermilk manufacture should be improved.

Context Water is the first nutrient and an essential component of all agricultural production systems. Despite its importance there has been limited research on water, and in particular, the impact of its availability, management and quality on production systems. Aims This research sought to describe the management and quality of water used within the Australian pig industry. Specifically, the water sources utilised, how water was managed and to evaluate water quality at both the source and the point of delivery to the pig. Methods Fifty-seven commercial piggeries across Australia participated in this study by completing a written survey on water management. In addition, survey participants undertook physical farm parameter measurements including collecting water samples. Each water sample was tested for standard quality parameters including pH, hardness, heavy metals and microbiological status. Key results Responses were received from 57 farms, estimated to represent at least 22% of ‘large’ pig herds. Bore water was the most common water source being utilised within the farms surveyed. Management practices and infrastructure delivering water from the source to the point of consumption were found to differ across the farms surveyed. Furthermore, water was regularly used as a delivery mechanism for soluble additives such as antibiotics. The quality of water at the source and point of consumption was found to be highly variable with many parameters, particularly pH, hardness, salinity, iron, manganese and microbiological levels, exceeding the acceptable standard. Conclusions In general, water quality did not appear to be routinely monitored or managed. As a result, farm managers had poor visibility of the potential negative impacts that inferior water quality or management may be having on pig production and in turn the economics of their business. Indeed, inferior water quality may impact the delivery of antibiotics and in turn undermine the industry’s antimicrobial stewardship efforts. Implications The study findings suggest that water quality represents a significant challenge to the Australian pig industry. Access to drinking water of an acceptable quality is essential for optimal pig performance, health and welfare but also to ensure farm to fork supply chain integrity, traceability and food safety.

A “special coffee” is obtained with an adequate drying process, which allows the preservation of volatile substances responsible for excellent cup quality. The aim was to carry out preliminary studies of drying of natural coffee by implementing a Cyclic Pressure Changes (CPCD) dryer, comparing it with solar drying and with a mechanical drying system by forced convection of low-temperature air. The drying times and rates of the systems used were compared, as well as the respective valuation of the cup quality. Drying times were 767 h for solar drying system, without reaching the desired moisture content; 153.5 h for mechanical drying system and 449 h for the CPCD system. However, the global cup tests showed a better quality of the grain obtained with the CPCD system (87 points), than the one obtained with the mechanical drying at 35°C (84 points).

To research the composition and proportion of the denitrying bacterium in denitrification tank and increase the nitrogen removals rate. With the purpose of explore the curve between the amount of different denitrying bacterium and the quality of water treating, then find out the optimum of the species of nitrogen removal bacteria and the amount of the specific type of microorganism in the denitrification tank of metal membrane bioreactor at the optimized conditions of the water treating effects. The fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) approach is applied in this research, to set a preliminary study on the space-time character of denitrification bacteria population structure in denitrifical tank.

AbstractBackgroundClean water is an essential element for human health, wellbeing, and prosperity. Every human being has the right to access safe drinking water. But, in now day, due to rapid population growth, illiteracy, lack of sustainable development, and climate change; it still faces a global challenge for about one billion people in the developing nation. The discontinuity of drinking water supply puts in force households either to use unsafe water storage materials or to use water from unimproved sources. This study aimed to identify the determinants of water source types, use, quality of water, and sanitation perception of physical parameters among urban households in North-West Ethiopia.MethodsA community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among households from February to March 2019. An interview-based pre-tested and structured questionnaire was used to collect the data. Data collection samples were selected randomly and proportional to each kebeles’ households. MS Excel and R Version 3.6.2 was used to enter and analyze the data; respectively. Descriptive statistics using frequencies and percentages were used to explain the sample data concerning the predictor variable. Both bivariate and multivariate logistic regressions were used to assess the association between the independent and the response variables.ResultsFour hundred eighteen (418) households have participated. Based on the study undertaken, 78.95% of households used improved and 21.05% of households used unimproved drinking water sources. Households drinking water sources are significantly associated with age of participant (x2 = 20.392, df=3), educational status (x2 = 19.358, df=4), source of income (x2 = 21.777, df=3), monthly income (x2 = 13.322, df=3), availability of additional facilities (x2 = 98.144, df=7), cleanness status (x2 =42.979, df=4), scarcity of water (x2 = 5.1388, df=1) and family size (x2 = 9.934, df=2). The logistic regression analysis also indicated as those factors are significantly determined (p 0.05) the water source types used by households. Factors such as availability of toilet facility, household member type, and sex of head of the household are not significantly associated with the drinking water sources.ConclusionThe study showed that being an older age group of the head of the household, being government employer, merchant and self-employed, being a higher income group, the presence of all facilities in the area, lived in a clean surrounding and lower family size are the determinant factors of using drinking water from improved sources. Therefore; the local, regional, and national governments and other supporting organizations shall improve the accessibility and adequacy of drinking water from improved sources through short and long time plans for the well-being of the community in the area.

Dentre estes produtores, foram selecionados dez, sendo um de cada localidade.Foram coletadas três amostras de água de cada fonte. Os principais padrões para avaliar os resultados obtidos foram os da Resolução do CONAMA (Conselho Nacional do Meio Ambiente) N° 357, de 17 de março de 2005, que estabelece os padrões para classificação dos corpos de água.A Condutividade Elétrica foi avaliada segundo valor sugerido pela CETESB e a cor foi verificada conforme a OMS (Organização Mundial da Saúde), para água potável devido a Resolução do CONAMA não estipular um valor para classificação.Para a saúde pública, apenas os coliformes e o nitrato são as variáveis preocupantes por estarem relacionados com a incidência de doenças, assim, das águas analisadas, 40% delas (produtores A, F, H e J) oferecem algum tipo de risco para a saúde da população de Botucatu, segundo padrão estabelecido pelo CONAMA.Podemos concluir que, de maneira geral, essas águas, encontram-se em condições não alarmantes, pois não apresentam valores muito diferentes daqueles estabelecidos pela legislação. UNITERMOS: classificação dos corpos de água, saúde pública, coliformes, nitrato.   FRAVET, A, M. QUALITY OF WATER USED FOR VEGETABLE IRRIGATION IN BOTUCATU AREA  2 ABSTRACT This study aimed to verify the quality of water used for irrigation by vegetable farmers in Botucatu area.27 farmers that sell vegetables in the street markets of Botucatu were interviewed. Among them, ten were selected. Each one was from a different place of the studied area.Three water samples from each water source were collected. In order to evaluate the obtained results, the main used standard was the one used by CONAMA (National Environment Council) resolution No. 357, March 17, 2005, because it establishes the standard for water classification.The Electric conductivity was evaluated according to values suggested by CETESB, but water color was verified according to WHO (World health organization) standard for drinking water because the CONAMA resolution does not determine classification values for that.For public health, just coliforms and nitrate are the preoccupying variables because they are related to the incidence of diseases. 40% of analyzed waters (A, F, H and J farmers) offer some risk to Botucatu population’s health, according to the standard established by CONAMA.We can conclude that in general analyzed waters are in non-alarming conditions and do not present very different values from those established by the legislation. KEYWORDS: water classification, public health, coliforms, nitrate.

Determining category of physical appropriateness of DWS under health office development and controlling program of Hulu Sungai Utara Regency, Determining Microbiology quality of  DWA under health office development and controlling program of Hulu Sungai Utara Regency, analyzing the correlation of physical appropriateness and microbiology quality if DWS under health office development and controlling program of Hulu Sungai Utara Regency. This is a quantitative study using cross-sectional research design in which the research was conducted in a certain period of time, the location of research was in 10 service area of the public health center in 9 subdistricts under health office development and controlling program of Hulu Sungai Utara Regency. It was found that 30 DWS (Drinking Water Storehouse) is under health office development and controlling program of Hulu Sungai Utara Regency, DWS which categorized as physically not Appropriate (TLF) was 20 DWS (66,7%) and categorized as physically appropriate (LF) was 10 DWS (33,3%). Microbiology quality of Balangan, Tabalong, Negara, Tangkawang and Rantau Bujur Darat River were excess the standard of quality of class I intended for the drinking water source. Microbiology quality of water source (PDAM) from 30 samples, it was found that 14 samples (46,7%) contained Coliform and E. coli, there were 2 samples (6,7%) contained only Coliform. Quality of microbiology and water product of  30 DWS, it was found that 2 DWS contained Coliform, all water of DWS production did not contain  E.coli. Statistical test of the correlation of physical appropriateness and microbiology quality of river water cannot be conducted because all samples have the same category which is TMS so that there was no difference in result data of category determination. There was no significant difference between physical appropriateness with microbiology quality of Coliform (p=0,260) and E.coli (p = 0,235) raw water of DWS. There was no significant correlation of physical appropriateness with microbiology quality of Coliform (p = 0,540) water product of DWS, meanwhile for statistical test for correlation of physical appropriateness and microbiology quality of E.coli of water product cannot be conducted because there was no difference in result data of category determination so that all samples has the same category.
