<p>On 24 August 2016, at 1.36:32 GMT, a M<sub>W</sub> 6.0 earthquake with epicenter located below the village of Accumoli, struck a wide area among the boundaries of Lazio, Abruzzo, Umbria and Marche regions (Central Italy): the main event caused the collapse of several buildings and about 300 fatalities, mainly in the towns of Amatrice, Arquata del Tronto and Accumoli. The main event was recorded by about 350 sensors, belonging to Italian Accelerometric Network (Rete Accelerometrica Nazionale, RAN), operated by the Department of Civil Protection (DPC), to the Italian Seismic Network (Rete Sismica Nazionale, RSN), managed by the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) and to other local networks. All the corrected data are available at the Engineering Strong Motion Database (<a href="http://esm.mi.ingv.it">esm.mi.ingv.it</a>). This paper reports the preliminary results of the analysis of the strong-motion recordings.</p>

Bridges are commonly used lifelines; they play an important role in the economic activity of a city or a region and their role can be crucial in a case of a seismic event since they allow the arrival of the first aid. Reinforced concrete (RC) bridges are worldwide used type view their durability, flexibility and economical cost. In fact, their behavior under seismic loading was the aim of various studies. In the present study the effect of two structural parameters i.e. the height and the type of piers of reinforced concrete bridges on seismic response is investigated. For that reason, different multi-span continuous girder bridges models with various geometrical parameters are considered. Then, non-linear dynamic analyses are performed based on two types of piers which are: multiple columns bent and wall piers with varying heights. In this approach, a serie of 40 ground motions records varying from weak to strong events selected from Building Research Institute (BRI) strong motion database are used including uncertainty in the soil and seismic characteristics. Modelling results put most emphasis on the modal periods and responses of the top pier displacements, they show the influence of the considered parameters on the behavior of such structures and their impact on the strength of reinforced concrete bridges.

On 24 August 2016, a Mw 6.0 earthquake started a damaging seismic sequence in central Italy. The historical center of Amatrice village reached the XI degree (MCS scale) but the high vulnerability alone could not explain the heavy damage. Unfortunately, at the time of the earthquake only AMT station, 200 m away from the downtown, recorded the mainshock, whereas tens of temporary stations were installed afterwards. We propose a method to simulate the ground motion affecting Amatrice, using the FFT amplitude recorded at AMT, which has been modified by the standard spectral ratio (SSR) computed at 14 seismic stations in downtown. We tested the procedure by comparing simulations and recordings of two later mainshocks (Mw 5.9 and Mw 6.5), underlining advantages and limits of the technique. The strong motion variability of simulations was related to the proximity of the seismic source, accounted for by the ground motion at AMT, and to the peculiar site effects, described by the transfer function at the sites. The largest amplification characterized the stations close to the NE hill edge and produced simulated values of intensity measures clearly above one standard deviation of the GMM expected for Italy, up to 1.6 g for PGA.

It is important to investigate strong-motion time series recorded at dams to understand their complex seismic responses. This paper develops a strong-motion database recorded at existing embankment dams and analyzes correlations between dam dynamic responses and ground-motion parameters. The Japan Commission on Large Dams database used here includes 190 recordings at the crests and foundations of 60 dams during 54 earthquakes from 1978 to 2012. Seismic amplifications and fundamental periods from recorded time series were computed and examined by correlation with shaking intensities and dam geometries. The peak ground acceleration (PGA) at the dam crest increases as the PGA at the foundation bedrock increases, but their ratio gradually decreases. The fundamental period broadly increases with the dam height and PGA at the foundation bedrock. The nonlinear dam response becomes more apparent as the PGA at the foundation bedrock becomes >0.2 g. The prediction models of these correlations are proposed for estimating the seismic response of embankment dams, which can inform the preliminary design stage.

<p>This note focuses on the ground motion recorded during the recent moderate earthquakes that occurred in the central part of northern Italy (Panel 1), a region that is characterized by low seismicity. For this area, the Italian seismic hazard map [Stucchi et al. 2011] assigns a maximum horizontal acceleration (rock site) of up to 0.2 g (10% probability of being exceeded in 50 yr). In the last 4 yr, this region has been struck by 9 earthquakes in the magnitude range 4 <span>≤</span>M<span>w </span><span>≤</span> 5.0, with the three largest located in the Northern Apennines (the M<span>w </span>4.9 and 5.0 Parma events, in December 2008 and January 2012) and on the Po Plain (the M<span>w </span>4.9 Reggio Emila event, in January 2012). <p><em>We used the moderate-magnitude aftershocks succeeding to the 2016 August 24<sup>th</sup>, Mw = 6.0, Amatrice (Italy) mainshok to asses, specially during an ongoing seismic sequence, the soil-structure interaction where cultural Heritage is involved. We have chosen as case study the</em><em> San Giovanni Battista</em><em> church (A.D. 1039)  in Acquasanta Terme town, about 20 Km northeast of Amatrice. First of all we studied the soil shaking features in order to characterize the input to the monument. Then, using the recordings in the church, we tried to figure out  how the input seismic energy is distributed over the different monument parts. Some preliminary results are shown and discussed.</em></p><p><em><br /></em></p>

By using both qualitative and quantitative data generated from primary as well as secondary sources the study tries to find out to what extent the social mobilization approach of UNDP supported Village Development Program (VDP) was effective to include and able to empower the indigenous Tharu people. The socio-economic status of majority of Tharus was weak and limited by state policies since historical period and local power relations which played the pivotal role to result to exclude them from the mainstream of development. In macro level the social mobilization approach of VDP was strong to initiate the issue of inclusion to empower the marginalized people, but in local level it was weak to implement the policies efficiently and effectively regards to local diverse conditions and differentiated actors. The diversity in the village resulted in the different responses to the social mobilization program. Particularly the social mobilization process was generalized and limited by the local networks of power relation. North-northeast of the village of Ilinden (Southern Pirin Mnt.) three eclogite boudins were separated on the geological map in scale 1:50 000 (Sarov, 2010). The rocks belong to the Slasten lithotectonic unit. The mineral assemblage and mineral chemistry do not allow these rocks to be classified as eclogites. They can be considered as eclogite-like ones, formed by postmagmatic-metasomatic alteration of the host rocks. Based on LA-ICP-MS sphene U-Pb dating, eclogite-like rocks yield a Late Jurassic age (160±19 Ma).
