We live in a time surrounded by innumerable technological innovations that have impacted this generation significantly, since very early people already make use of some electronic gadget, navigating a universe rich in entertainment features, allowing access to different content whether close or even far. Such technological innovations promote relevant transformations in all sectors of society, contributing to the formation of more active and participative subjects in issues of interest around themselves and the world, favoring the dissemination of popular culture and its enrichment. New technologies favor changes in thinking, acting, teaching and learning, as they have significantly contributed to the advancement of communication and access to information in real time. It is noticed that children are increasingly getting access to these technological tools and master them very skillfully, being able to teach the most advanced in age the use of these novelties. Thinking about the way the child is positioned in the technological society, this work sought to investigate the importance of using new digital technologies in the classroom to enhance the teaching-learning process in the early years of basic education.

This book documents the rise of digital repression—how governments are deploying new technologies to counter dissent, maintain political control, and ensure regime survival. The emergence of varied digital technologies is bringing new dimensions to political repression. At its core, the expanding use of digital repression reflects a fairly simple motivation: states are seeking and finding new ways to control, manipulate, surveil, or disrupt real or perceived threats. This book investigates the goals, motivations, and drivers of digital repression. It presents case studies in Thailand, the Philippines, and Ethiopia, highlighting how governments pursue digital strategies based on a range of factors: ongoing levels of repression, leadership, state capacity, and technological development. But a basic political motive—how to preserve and sustain political incumbency—remains a principal explanation for their use. The international community is already seeing glimpses of what the frontiers of repression look like, such as in China, where authorities have brought together mass surveillance, online censorship, DNA collection, and artificial intelligence to enforce their rule in Xinjiang. Many of these trends are going global. This has major implications for democratic governments and civil society activists around the world. The book also presents innovative ideas and strategies for civil society and opposition movements to respond to the digital autocratic wave.

Teaching biochemistry in higher education is increasingly becoming a challenge. It is notoriously difficult for students to assimilate the topic; in addition there are many complaints about the complexity of subjects and a lack of integration with the day-to-day. A recurrent problem in undergraduate courses is the absence of teaching practice in specific disciplines. This work aimed to stimulate students in the biological sciences course who were enrolled in the discipline of MOLECULAR DIVERSITY (MD), to create hypothetical classes focused on basic education highlighting the proteins topic. The methodology was applied in a class that contained 35 students. Seven groups were formed, and each group chose a protein to be used as a source of study for elementary school classes. A lesson plan was created focusing on the methodology that the group would use to manage a class. The class was to be presented orally. Students were induced to be creative and incorporate a teacher figure, and to propose teaching methodologies for research using the CTS approach (Science, Technology and Society). Each group presented a three-dimensional structure of the protein they had chosen, explained their structural features and functions and how they would develop the theme for a class of basic education, and what kind of methodology they would use for this purpose. At the end of the presentations, a questionnaire was given to students in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the methodology in the teaching-learning process. The activity improved the teacher’s training and developed skills and abilities, such as creativity, didactical planning, teaching ability, development of educational models and the use of new technologies. The methodology used in this work was extremely important to the training of future teachers, who were able to better understand the content covered in the discipline and relate it to day-to-day life.

ResumoNeste artigo discutimos resultados de uma pesquisa em que se analisou ações propostas em uma disciplina de Prática de Ensino, identificando aquelas que podem ter possibilitado a construção de conhecimentos tecnológicos e pedagógicos de conteúdo, por egressos de um curso de Licenciatura em Matemática. Dentre as ações identificadas, duas são relacionadas à aprendizagem da docência, uma vivenciada na sala de aula da disciplina, em que o acadêmico teve colegas como alunos, e a outra realizada no espaço da escola, em que o acadêmico assumiu a regência de uma aula de matemática em escolas de Educação Básica. O objetivo neste artigo é analisar essas duas ações e possíveis relações com a construção de conhecimentos tecnológicos e pedagógicos de conteúdo matemático. Os dados foram produzidos na pesquisa a partir de entrevistas realizadas com 27 egressos desse curso de Licenciatura em Matemática, que realizaram a disciplina de Prática de Ensino e concluíram o curso, no período de 2010 a 2015. A partir da análise de “falas de egressos”, concluiu se que as duas ações propostas na disciplina de Prática de Ensino, nas quais os professores em formação tiveram a oportunidade de praticar a docência, podem ter oportunizado a construção de conhecimentos tecnológicos e pedagógicos de conteúdo matemático. Nessas ações, esses egressos tiveram que estudar conteúdos matemáticos e tecnologias, de maneira a atender objetivos de aulas e favorecer a aprendizagem de seus alunos.Palavras-chave: Prática de Ensino. Tecnologias Digitais.AbstractIn this paper we discuss the results of a research in which actions proposed in a Teaching Practice discipline were analyzed, identifying those may have made the construction of technological and pedagogical knowledge, by graduates of a Mathematics Degree. Among the actions identified, two are related to teaching learning, and other experienced in the classroom, in which the students was the academic’s colleagues, and the other was in the school space, in which the academic took over the conduct of a class of mathematics in Basic Education schools. The objective of this article is to analyze these two actions and possible relationships with the construction of technological and pedagogical knowledge of Mathematical content. The data were produced in the research based on interviews with 27 graduates of this Mathematics Degree, who took the Teaching Practice discipline and completed the course, from 2010 to 2015. From the analysis of the “speeches of graduates”, it was concluded that the two actions proposed in the Teaching Practice discipline, in which the teachers in training had the opportunity to practice teaching, may have given rise to the construction of technological and pedagogical knowledge of Mathematical content. In these actions, these graduates had to study Mathematical content and technologies, in order to meet class objectives and favor the learning of their students.Keywords: Teaching Practice. The future of higher education is intrinsically linked with developments on new technologies and computing capacities of the new intelligent machines. In this field, advances in artificial intelligence open to new possibilities and challenges for teaching and learning in higher education with the potential to fundamentally change governance and the internal architecture of institutions of higher education. The role of technology in higher learning is to enhance human thinking and to augment the educational process, not to reduce it to a set of procedures for content delivery, control, and assessment. With the rise of AI solutions, it is increasingly important for educational institutions to stay alert and see if the power of control over hidden algorithms that run them is not monopolized by tech-lords. This chapter will cover all the positive and negative aspects of AI technologies on teaching, learning, and research in higher education.

The increase of political disaffection in Spain, as is occurring in many western democracies across the world, coincides with a growing vindication of democracy on the part of the citizenry, which translates to a demand for more governmental transparency and access to information. With this in mind, this chapter explores the availability of information in local public administrations on social media. The study analyses the presence of town and city councils throughout Andalusia on Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube, examining how these media are managed and their effects, by studying the content and resources provided to the citizens for interacting with the institutions. The results revealed that although the selected councils tried to adopt these new information channels, they are still far from taking full advantage of the possibilities the new technologies could provide.

SMEs account for a large propotion and play an important role in the development of each country in the world, including India. The globalization will bring many advantages for enterprises however SMEs will face fierce competition at the local, national and international level. In order to maintain and promote the important role of SMEs in the context of increased competition, SMEs have to change and adopt new technologies. E-commerce and digital technologies are bringing opportunities to help SMEs improve their competitiveness, narrow the gap with big enterprises thanks to their fairness and flexibility of the digital business environment. According to UNIDO (2017), India is one of the countries successfully applying e-commerce to SMEs. Contributing to this success is the important role of the Indian government. Therefore, this paper focuses on researching the application of e-commerce to SMEs in terms of the role of government in promoting and creating ecosystem for SMEs and e-commerce development.

There are at least three areas in which technology can impact education: teaching, learning, and assessment. Teaching, when viewed as communication of information, has been transformed by the technology revolution. Word processing, multimedia, distance learning, and access to the World Wide Web are some prominent examples. The impact of technology on learning, defined as knowledge or skill acquired by instruction or study, has been less dramatic, in part because of our limited understanding of cognitive processes. Some forms of assessment, the collection of evidence of learning, have benefited from technology, such as item analysis of multiple-choice questions. To be effective, the focus on instruction must start with the learner and, from there, consider what should be done to enhance learning. An emphasis on what is technologically appropriate, rather than what is technologically possible, will improve the quality of both teaching and learning.

In education, new technologies are used to improve the process of teaching and learning. This study examined middle school teachers' perceptions regarding the use of iPads for instruction. The participants, 53 middle school teachers in Western New York, responded to an online survey, asking them questions about how they felt about the 1:1 iPad initiative at their school. Data analysis included open and axial coding for identification of themes and patterns, as well as quantitative statistical analysis. The results showed mixed findings, as some teachers believed that iPads had a positive impact on the teaching-learning process by improving student engagement and communication, while some responded with concerns that iPads caused student distraction and allowed off-task behaviors in the classroom. The findings also suggest that teachers need targeted professional development on pedagogical and practical use of this technology to be able to successfully integrate it into their practice.

The title of this paper, as proposed by the meeting organisers, implies that Europe is different when it comes to biotechnology. In the early years of the 21st Century, even an impartial observer would agree that Europe differs from most of the rest of the world in its attitudes to at least one biotechnology – Genetically Modified (GM) crops. On the other hand, parts of Europe are seen as relatively enthusiastic about applications of biotechnology in human medicine. Take for instance, the UK's stance on research with human stem cells. Do these differences reflect permanent differences or merely a more cautious approach in Europe to the adoption of biotechnology in food production? Does this matter to pig producers?This paper seeks to give a broad and shallow overview of the opportunities for developments in biotechnology to impact on pig production. It will consider which of the many potential new technologies, if they were available now, might be acceptable in Europe and what might be the consequences of failure to access technologies that others exploit.

The eLearning instruments that have been researched in the last few years represent a necessity for the Romanian primary school also within the development of the alternative learning sources. These cognitive instruments as D.H. Jonassen names them, are utilized in the USA and are researched in other countries, too (France) in order to be implemented. The aim of this article is to implement and to recommend the utilization of electronic models: text and image processing sheets, presentation sheets, spreadsheets in the teaching­learning process in primary school. According to this aim, the research hypothesis has been issued in keeping with which we anticipate to be able to offer a well thought training in the eLearning field by updating the teaching and learning process with the help of the implementation of a set of electronic models which will increase the intercepting coefficient, the motivation, stimulation, imagination and enthusiasm degree for the learning actors and will redefine the teacher-pupil relation. The main objectives which derive from the hypothesis of our study confine to establishing the impact of electronic models of the eLeaming Set that has been proposed to be implemented on the actors primary school in the teaching-learning process; rendering the teaching-learning process efficient by implementing cognitive models with electronic support; working out an operational guide that contains scientific-practical recommendations and lesson models that utilize PeL; enriching the mathematical thinking. The study sample covers a population that wishes to know, to participate in the implementing of the new technologies. The sample was composed as follows: 121 teachers in primary schools, most of them students of the University in Pite
