The study investigated infrastructural provision and effective management among Governing Boards (GB) of Public Secondary Schools (PSS) in Oyo State, Nigeria. It adopted the correlational survey design while multistage sampling procedure was used and a total of 1585 school governing board members were selected using a systematic random sampling. Data obtained from questionnaires were subjected to descriptive statistics of frequency and percentage as well as inferential statistics of t-test at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that there is an ineffective management of human, financial and material resources among GB of PSS in Oyo State, Nigeria. Infrastructural Provision (IP) is considered to be high. School location (either rural or urban) posed a significant effect on effective management and IP. Proper management of human, financial and material resources should be ensured in public secondary school by the school governing boards in Oyo State, Nigeria towards the achievement of the school goals and objectives.

It has been observed that management of Public Secondary Schools (PSSs) usually requests and waits for funds and other resources from either the state or federal government for effective running of the public schools. This has brought about ineffectiveness of public schools due to long waiting of resources. However, studies have been conducted on Management Effectiveness (ME) with other variables but none of these studies were able to consider school monitoring in relation to ME. Based on this, the study investigated school monitoring as a major correlate of management effectiveness among governing boards of public secondary schools in Oyo State, Nigeria using correlational survey design. Population of this study comprised 5,643 members of School Governing Boards (SGBs) in 627 rural and urban PSSs in Oyo State. A total of 1585 SGBs members was selected using systematic random sampling. Data obtained through self-constructed questionnaire was subjected to quantitative analysis using frequency count, percentage and independent t-test at 0.05 level of significance. The study revealed that state of ME (human, financial and material resources) was found to be low in PSSs. Level of PSSs monitored by SGBs in Oyo State, Nigeria was considered to be high. School location has significant effect on ME and school monitoring system. Appropriate monitoring system should be ensured to effectively manage the available human, financial and material resources in PSSs by the school governing boards that would create significant impetus on the quality of the public secondary school system in Oyo State, Nigeria.

This study examined the relationship between financial resources and teachers' job involvement in public secondary schools in Imo State, Nigeria. One research question was raised and one hypothesis was formulated to guide the study. The study adopted a correlational research design. The population of the study comprised of 5363 teachers in public secondary schools in all the six education zones in the state. A multistage sampling procedure was used to draw a sample size of 580 participants for the study. Two researcher-made instruments titled 'Financial Resource Capacity Questionnaire' (FRCQ) and 'Teachers' Job Involvement Questionnaire' (TJIQ) were used to collect relevant data for the study. The research question was analysed using means and percentages, while Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient was used to test the hypothesis at 0.05 level of significance. The results showed a significant relationship between financial resources and the job involvement of teachers. Based on the findings, the study concluded that financial resources are vital means for the acquisition, remuneration and maintenance of other resources in the school. The study recommended among others that the provision of financial resources should be all inclusive and not left to the government alone and school administrators should effectively utilize available financial resources as this will be helpful in boosting teachers' job involvement in secondary schools.

The study assessed the implementation of contents for secondary school biology curriculum in three states in Southwest, Nigeria. The descriptive research design of the survey type was used in this study. The population of the study comprised all Biology teachers in all the public secondary schools in Ondo, Osun and Oyo States. The samples for the study consisted of 180 biology teachers drawn from 180 public secondary schools in the three states. The sample was selected using multistage sampling procedure. An instrument tagged Inventory on Implementation of Biology Curriculum (IIBC) was used for collecting the data for the study. The validation process was exempted since an inventory was used. The responses obtained were collated and analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings of the study revealed that Biology curriculum contents were not fully covered. It was also revealed that most of the schools do not meet the recommended standard of at least 2 periods per week for practical work in Biology. It was further revealed that the implementation of the contents of Biology curriculum in secondary schools do not differ among the three states considered in this study. It was recommended among others that Biology teacher should intensify efforts to see that the biology curriculum contents are covered and implemented.


This research determined students’ perception of teachers’ characteristics of interest, attitude and subject mastery as required in the teaching of chemistry in senior secondary schools in Abakaliki Education Zone of Ebonyi State. The study made use of a descriptive survey design. The population of the study comprised all the chemistry students in all public secondary schools in Abakaliki Education Zone. From a total population of six hundred and thirty (630) senior secondary II students, a sample of three hundred (300) students was used for the study selected by stratified random sampling technique. This was based on the four local government areas in the Education zone. A structured questionnaire in a four point Likert type format was used for data collection. The instrument had a reliability coefficient of 0.88, which showed a high internal consistency. Three research questions and one hypothesis guided the study. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions while t-test statistic was used to test the lone null hypothesis. Results of the study indicated that students perceived to a high extent; teachers’ interest, attitude towards chemistry and mastery of the subject as necessary characteristics in the teaching of chemistry. The hypothesis tested at 0.05 level of significance was not significant. Based on the results of the study and the educational implications of the results, recommendations were made.

Given that managing schools to attain expected goals is becoming challenging in the present competitive society, it becomes paramount that collaborations, especially with a highly innovative group of people are encouraged. In the light of this, the purpose of this study is to investigate the extent of School-Based Management Committees' (SBMCs) involvement in public secondary school administration in Abuja. A descriptive survey design was used for the study, and 3 research questions were answered in relation to the 3 research objectives of the study. The population of the study was 460 respondents, and a sample size of 250 respondents was drawn through proportionate random and convenience sampling techniques. A structured questionnaire was used for data collection. Arithmetic mean was employed in analyzing the research questions. The result revealed among others, that the school-based management committees play a passive role in planning in public secondary schools in Abuja. It was concluded that for schools to effectively meet the academic need of the Abuja community, their collaborations with the SBMCs have to be very active and productive. To this end, SBMCs need to become more committed to collaborating and helping the schools in terms of planning, staffing and monitoring.

The study examines managing teacher education and innovative reforms agenda for curriculum execution in secondary schools in Imo state, Nigeria. The study adopted descriptive survey design. The population comprised of Five hundred and thirty (530) secondary school Principal in Imo state school system. The sample consisted of 200 duty principals randomly selected by stratified technique from each of the three education zones of the state, Okigwe, Orlu, and Owerri. Fifteen (15) items questionnaire was the instruments for data collection and the instrument was validated by experts in Imo state University, Owerri. The questionnaire which recorded a reliability coefficient of 0.89 was administered face to face to 200 respondents by the researchers who also retrieved same. The data collected were analyzed with mean and standard deviation and null hypothesis were tested using the z-test statistics at 0.05 level of significance. Based on the results, the researchers made crucial recommendations that government and stakeholders in education should emphasize on managing teacher education and innovative reform agenda to enhance development of the nation.

The study evaluated the implementation of the Universal Basic Education Yoruba Language Curriculum in South Western States of Nigeria. The purpose is to determine the extent of the coverage of the Curriculum. It is also meant to determine whether the objectives of the Yoruba Language Curriculum are achieved. Also, it is meant to ascertain the attitude of the students towards the learning of Yoruba Language. The study is a descriptive research of the survey design. The population consists of all students and teachers that are teaching Yoruba Language in all upper Basic Schools in South Western Nigeria. A sample of 1500 respondents which consists of 1200 students and 300 teachers that are teaching Yoruba Language in upper Basic Schools was selected through the use of multistage sampling techniques. Three (3) Research questions and (2) Two Hypotheses were used and tested at 0.5 level of significance. Four instruments were used to elicit information. They are, Teachers’ Questionnaire on implementation of the Universal Basic Education Yoruba Language Curriculum, Questionnaire on students’ attitude towards learning of Yoruba language and Students achievement test. The students’ class notes were also used to know the extent of the work done. The data generated were subjected to descriptive analysis and inferential statistics. The findings revealed that, there was a low positive relationship between the Universal Basic Education Yoruba Language Curriculum and its implementation.

The paper examined the perception of student counsellors studying Guidance and Counselling in various Nigerian Universities on ethical codes which should guide and protect the counselling profession. Four research questions were raised to guide the study and two corresponding hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The study adopted the descriptive survey design, with a sample of 1,500 students, drawn from selected Nigerian universities using the multistage sampling technique. The instrument used to gather data for the study was a 50 item questionnaire constructed by the researcher. The psychometric properties were determined and found adequate for use. The test-re-test method was applied to determine reliability which yielded r = 0.88. Senior lecturers in the Department of Guidance and Counselling ascertained content and construct adequacy of the instrument. Data collected were analysed using mean and standard deviation to answer research questions and t-test to test the hypotheses. The study found out that respondents perceived counselling codes highly irrespective of their gender and religious beliefs although male respondents showed stronger agreement. It was therefore recommended that the Counselling Association of Nigeria should develop counselling ethical codes for professional counselling practice in Nigeria without considering any bias for gender and religion.

Research findings in secondary schools have consistently indicated that geometry is one of the most difficult areas of Mathematics at basic level and students’ attitude towards it has been a factor that is known to influence students’ achievement in mathematics. The purpose of this study is to investigate the level of students’ attitude towards geometry and to find out whether gender difference influences such attitude. Some selected secondary schools in Zamfara state were used for the study. The study adopted a descriptive survey design using a questionnaire tagged Geometric Attitude Questionnaire. The population of the study consisted of SS I students in Zamfara state. A sample of 157students was drawn using simple random sampling technique. Descriptive statistics of means and standard deviations were used to answer the research questions while Inferential Statistics of the Mann-Whitney test was used to test the formulated hypothesis. The study revealed that students’ attitude towards geometry was relatively high generally, with male students having much higher positive attitude to geometry than their female counterparts and that difference between them was not statistically significant at α = 0.05 level of significance. It is recommended that teachers should be resourceful in encouraging and helping students in order to build positive attitude by trying to relate geometry to real life situations and also be gender sensitive.

The study examined school plant security management and students‟ academic achievement in public secondary schools in Akwa Ibom State. Two research questions were raised and two hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The design of the study was ex-post facto. The study population consisted of 48, 840 SSII students and 6755 teachers in 235 public secondary schools in Akwa Ibom State. The sample comprised 977 SSII students and 811 teachers in 118 Secondary Schoolswhich were sampled, using multistage sampling procedure. Two instruments were used for data collection. They are researcher developed checklist and questionnaire respectively titled “School Plant Security Availability Checklist (SPSAC) and School Plant Security Utilization Questionnaire (SPSUQ)”. SPSUQ was responded to by both the teachers and students. The reliability co-efficient of the instrument was determined using the Cronbach Alpha statistic. The Reliability index of 0.82 was obtained. Mean and Standard Deviation were used to answer the research questions while Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 alpha level. The findings of the study are that lacks of security devices in the school affect negatively students‟ academic achievement in English Language, Mathematics and Biology. The study recommended that there is need to overhaul the existing policy on school plant security as to ensure proper provision and utilization of the devices. It also recommended that government should make available suitable security devices and all the materials needed to make them functional.
