В настоящей рецензии представлена оценка монографии, посвященной проблемам принятия христианства аланами в начале X в. Под данными событиями понима­ется становление христианства как государственной религии. Основное внимание в рецензируемой книге уделяется биографии и деятельности Константинопольского патриарха Николая I Мистика и его «аланскому досье». Основу монографии состав­ляет анализ данных из соответствующих писем патриарха в части, касающей­ся заявленной проблемы. Перевод соответствующих частей писем на русский язык представлен в заключительной части издания. Выход самой монографии открывает серию «Аланская библиотека» издательства «Ир», инициированной накануне празд­нования 1100-летия крещения Алании, что придает изданию не только научное, но и важное общественное значение. В рецензии представлена некоторая корректиров­ка в представлении о формировании научной парадигмы, устанавливающей генети­ческую связь между аланами раннего средневековья и современными осетинами. По мнению рецензента, противоречивыми представляются попытки выявления более раннего периода знакомства алан с христианством. В данном случае само понятие «знакомство» остается без должного определения. Постулирование наличия светской и церковной науки противоречит самому понятию науки. Некоторые представлен­ные трактовки содержания нарративных источников, как минимум, выводят их в область дискуссии. Предложенные в рецензии частные замечания не затрагивают ос­новную часть монографического издания, в которой анализируются различные стра­ницы деятельности Николая I Мистика и письма его «аланского досье». По мнению рецензента, именно она должна оказаться наиболее привлекательной для широко кру­га читателей, для которых и предназначенная серия «Аланская библиотека». В книге представлен материал, освещающий как сам процесс принятия христианства Ала­нией, так и его источники. This review presents an assessment of the monograph devoted to the problems of the adoption of Christianity by the Alans at the beginning of the 10th century. These events are understood as the formation of Christianity as the state religion. The main attention is paid to the biography and activities of the Patriarch of Constantinople Nicholas I Mysticos and his “Alanian dossier”. The basis of the monograph is the analysis of data from the corresponding letters of the patriarch in the part concerning the stated problem. The translation of the corresponding parts of the letters into Russian is presented in the final part of the publication. The publication of the monograph itself opens the series of the “Alanian Library” of the “Ir” publishing house, initiated on the eve of the celebration of the 1100th anniversary of the baptism of Alania, which gives the publication not only scientific, but also important social significance. The review presents some correction in the idea of the formation of a scientific paradigm that establishes a genetic link between the Alans of the early Middle Ages and modern Ossetians. In the opinion of the reviewer, attempts to identify an earlier period of the Alans’ acquaintance with Christianity seem to be contradictory. In this case, the very concept of “acquaintance” remains without proper definition. The postulation of the existence of secular and ecclesiastical science contradicts the very concept of science. Some of the presented interpretations of the content of narrative sources, at least, bring them into the area of discussion. The private remarks offered in the review do not affect the main part of the monographic publication, which analyzes various pages of the activities of Nicholas I the Mystic and the letters of his “Alanian dossier”. According to the reviewer, it should be the most attractive for a wide range of readers, for whom the initiated series «Alanian Library» is intended. It provides material that sanctifies both the process of adoption of Christianity by Alania and its sources.

For more than twenty years, the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences celebrates the Day of Slavic Writing and Culture with a traditional scholarly conference.”. Since 2014, it has been held in the young scholars’ format. In 2019, participants from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan, Togliatti, Tyumen, Yekaterinburg, and Rostov-on-Don, as well as Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Romania continued this tradition. A wide range of problems related to the history of the Slavic peoples from the Middle Ages to the present time in the national, regional and international context were discussed again. Participants talked about the typology of Slavic languages and dialects, linguo-geography, socio- and ethnolinguistics, analyzed formation, development, current state, and prospects of Slavic literatures, etc.

The article focuses on the state of academic literature in the field of Russian translation studies based on Ewa Konefał’s latest bibliographic monograph entitled Russian translation studies. Volume 1: Abstracts of dissertations 1937–2015 (Publishing house of Gdansk University, Gdansk 2016). The first part of the article justifies the need to create bibliographic monographs, and briefly presents Polish bibliographic research in Russian studies, with 169 publications from the years 1883–2016. In the main part of the article, the author discusses Konefał’s work and presents statistical data of documents from the field of Russian translation studies available in libraries in Russia and Post-Soviet countries based on Konefał’s research results. The total number of the excerpted titles of dissertations (PhD and postdoctoral) in the years 1937–2015 is 2202, with 87.5% belonging to the field of philology (1927 positions).


Oxford Studies in Ancient Philosophy provides, twice each year, a collection of the best current work in the field of ancient philosophy. Each volume features original essays that contribute to an understanding of a wide range of themes and problems in all periods of ancient Greek and Roman philosophy, from the beginnings to the threshold of the Middle Ages. From its first volume in 1983, OSAP has been a highly influential venue for work in the field, and has often featured essays of substantial length as well as critical essays on books of distinctive importance. Volume LIII contains: an article on several of Zeno of Elea’s paradoxes and the nihilist interpretation of Eudemus of Rhodes; an article on the coherence of Thrasymachus’ challenge in Plato’s Republic book 1; another on Plato’s treatment of perceptual content in the Theaetetus and the Phaedo; an article on why Aristotle thinks that hypotheses are material causes of conclusions, and another on why he denies shame is a virtue; and a book review of a new edition of a work possibly by Apuleius and Middle Platonist political philosophy.

M. Fabius Quintilianus was a prominent orator, declaimer, and teacher of eloquence in the first century ce. After his retirement he wrote the Institutio oratoria, a unique treatise in Antiquity because it is a handbook of rhetoric and an educational treatise in one. Quintilian’s fame and influence are not only based on the Institutio, but also on the two collections of Declamations which were attributed to him in late Antiquity. The Oxford Handbook of Quintilian aims to present Quintilian’s Institutio as a key treatise in the history of Graeco-Roman rhetoric and its influence on the theory and practice of rhetoric and education, from late Antiquity until the present day. It contains chapters on Quintilian’s educational programme, his concepts and classifications of rhetoric, his discussion of the five canons of rhetoric, his style, his views on literary criticism, declamation, and the relationship between rhetoric and law, and the importance of the visual and performing arts in his work. His huge legacy is presented in successive chapters devoted to Quintilian in late Antiquity, the Middle Ages, the Italian Renaissance, Northern Europe during the Renaissance, Europe from the Eighteenth to the Twentieth Century, and the United States of America. There are also chapters devoted to the biographical tradition, the history of printed editions, and modern assessments of Quintilian. The twenty-one authors of the chapters represent a wide range of expertise and scholarly traditions and thus offer a unique mixture of current approaches to Quintilian from a multidisciplinary perspective.

Using celebrity narratives as a starting point, this Special Issue explores the social significance of storytelling for social change. It builds on the 8th Centre for Media and Celebrity Studies conference, which brought together scholars and media practitioners to explore how narratives inspired by the lives of celebrities, public intellectuals, critics and activists offer useful rhetorical tools to better understand dominant ideologies. This editorial further problematizes what it means to be a popular ‘storyteller’ using the critical lens of celebrity activism and life-writing. Throughout the issue, contributors analyse the politics of representation at play within a wide range of glamourous narratives, including documentaries, memoirs, TED talks, stand-up performances and award acceptance speeches in Hollywood and beyond. The studies show how we can strategically use aesthetic communication to shape identity politics in public personas and bring urgent social change in an image-driven celebrity culture.

Background, objectives and methodology of the research. Musical performing art of the XX–XXI centuries demonstrates a steady and growing interest in a huge array of music from pre-classical eras – the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque. The baroque music occupies a leading position in the field of instrumental performing as an obligatory part of the educational (works by J. S. Bach) and concert repertoire. The problem of interpretation of early music, acutely posed by musicians of the XX century – up to the reconstruction of all historical performance parameters – retains its relevance. In this regard, we note that the performance of a piece of music does not always make off the strongest impression precisely in its “primary” – restored – form, since reconstruction is limited by the volume of our historical knowledge, while modern musical instruments have a much wider range of expressiveness, than theirs historical predecessors, and the modern interpreter – “de facto”, due to his location in the historical space – a much richer thesaurus. So, the aim of this article is systematization, from the standpoint of the teaching experience of its author in the piano class, observations and practical recommendations regarding the style of performing of ancient instrumental music and approaches to its interpretation by a pianist on an instrument of modern construction. The methodology of the study includes an appeal to the intonation theory of B. Asafiev (1971), when considering the dynamic processes of formation of the musical form and the functioning of articulatory units – motifs, phrases, rhetorical figures, strokes, etc.; to the provisions of the works of M. Mikhailov (1981), E. Nazaikinskiy (2003), O. Katrich (2000) concerning the theory of styles; V. Kholopova (1979) and G. Ignatchenko (1983), when considering performance techniques that emphasize the originality of the texture of baroque music; as well as generally accepted methods of scientific research: analysis, selection, structuring of information with its subsequent generalization. Presentation of research results. The study of ancient instrumental music in the piano class is extremely important for the formation of a competent specialist, a musician of a wide range. In the cognitive process, such stages must be passed as determining the style, genre, form of the musical work, identifying the features of the musically expressive means used in it and finding appropriate ways to embody them. It is necessary to make as complete an idea as possible of the past historical epoch, its philosophy, aesthetics, different types of art and their interaction. The purpose of work on pieces of ancient music should be directing а performer to the general laws of “style of the era” (according to M. Mikhailov, 1981), because, despite national differences, by the middle of the XVIII century, a certain “panEuropean” style was formed, which was of great importance for the formation of the next generations of musicians. One of the brightest manifestations of the musical style of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries is a close connection between music and the art of rhetoric. When referring to ancient music, performers must take into account the enormous influence that rhetoric had on the formation of musical thinking at that time. The close relationship of the latter with the oratory, which is based on a set of laws and rules, led to the influence of musical-rhetorical figures on the semantics of musical language, and, consequently – on the intonation-declamation sphere of musical text, ways of articulation. The latter were largely determined by the design features of ancient tools. The variety of characteristic techniques of instrumental sound production – expressive touches, among which a special place was occupied by the string strokes (legato, detache, martele, etc.) – has become an integral part of the style of European music of the XVII–XVIII centuries. Transferring them to the field of piano technique is necessary for adequate interpretation of works of this period, requiring the pianist to find appropriate analogues that allow to some extent to reproduce the figurative, articulatory, timbre-color, texture characteristics of the performed work. Modern piano, which due to a fundamentally different method of sound production does not claim to be an authentic reproduction of baroque music, has its own rich arsenal of expressiveness, which allows you to offer the listener no less interesting interpretive content of music of past eras. The art of outstanding pianists of the XX–XXI centuries, to whose audio and video recordings modern performers turn in search of a reference sound (G. Gould, S. Richter, S. Feinberg, T. Nikolaeva, M.Argerich, F. Gulda, G. Sokolov, A. Schiff and others) demonstrates this fact clearly. Conclusions. Not reconstruction, but reproduction of the style, image and spirit of early music becomes the leading principle of working on it in the piano class. And here the pianist should come to the aid of a conscious intonation, based on knowledge of both the general laws of the reproduced style and its characteristic details. The outstanding interpreter of early music V. Landowska (1991: 350) wrote: “One cannot ignore the reading of Quantz’s treatises on playing the flute, Leopold Mozart on the violin, Tosi-Agricola on singing, François Couperin, Rameau, Frescobaldi, Marpurg, K. F. E. Bach and many others – about playing keyboard instruments”. Finding “unexpected treasures” in them, “the disciples are delighted, because they begin to realize what they simply did not pay attention to before. In such cases, you find yourself witnessing an explosion of joy, somewhat reminiscent of the discovery of love”.

An iterative method for solution of Cauchy problem for one-dimensional nonlinear hyperbolic differential equation is proposed in this paper. The method is based on continuous method for solution of nonlinear operator equations. The keystone idea of the method consists in transition from the original problem to a nonlinear integral equation and its successive solution via construction of an auxiliary system of nonlinear differential equations that can be solved with the help of different numerical methods. The result is presented as a mesh function that consists of approximate values of the solution of stated problem and is constructed on a uniform mesh in a bounded domain of two-dimensional space. The advantages of the method are its simplicity and also its universality in the sense that the method can be applied for solving problems with a wide range of nonlinearities. Finally it should be mentioned that one of the important advantages of the proposed method is its stability to perturbations of initial data that is substantiated by methods for analysis of stability of solutions of systems of ordinary differential equations. Solving several model problems shows effectiveness of the proposed method.

At the same time, the article presents the author's defi nition of family destructive confl icts and their classifi cation. The main attention is paid to the analysis of the relationship between certain types of violence and specifi c destructive family confl icts. The article provides a fairly deep scientifi c interpretation of various types of family violence.

The review deals with the second volume of the academic edition “The History of Ural Literature,” prepared by a group of scholars from the Ural-Siberian scientific community. The merit of the issue is presenting the literary process and the Ural writers’ community as a complex sociocultural phenomenon aimed at work professionalization and connected with the history of the region’s self-determination. When presenting specific names, the authors of the project followed the principle description tasks: to show the connection of the writer’s biography and work with the territory, to emphasize how the works are filled with impressions of Ural life, to draw attention to the writer’s involvement in local cultural communities and support from leading literary figures and critics. Since the book covers a wide range of authors, a number of conclusions significant for the regional literary process understanding can be drawn. Biography materials allow speaking of a variety of social segments of people involved in writing: from base estates and plant workers to noble and intellectual people. Not everyone was ready for professional literary activity, but all quite openly demonstrated their reading tastes. By the end of the century, the cultural and aesthetic commonality of the Ural literature is defined. Its specific writing style becomes distinctive, with a tendency toward documentality, autobiography, and ethnography. Genre preferences become apparent. Genre preferences become apparent. Most importantly, the names appear, starting to be identified by critics as “the Urals writer.”
