Geophagy is the eating of non-food earthy matters practice (such as clay), which is performed especially in humans, to augment a scanty or mineral-deficient diet or as part of a cultural tradition. Geophagy, the intentional ingestion of clay or soil, is a prevalent practice among animals and humans, especially is more common in young ages, such as children and among pregnant women with a young age. In spite of some well documented cases, the motivations of this practice and its consequences on the status of health of the consumer are still unclear. This study focused on the source of heavy metals and its health impact because of the importance of the topic in the environmental hazards, especially as this addictive phenomenon may not be well known among families in our societies. During this study, twenty-four samples of marl were collected within the rock sequences of the Fatha Formation in the Kirkuk and Diyala, which are used in eating (mud eating disease) in these regions. The samples were subjected to laboratory studies including chemical analyses, to determine their contents of trace elements. The laboratory analytical data showed that these muds (marl) contain different concentrations of chemical elements such as (Co, Cr, Ni, Cu, and Zn) which are among the heavy toxic elements and harmful to human health. A close look at the analytical data and results of the statistical and environmental factors, it is found that the marl (geophagia) consumption in terms of its content of trace elements, poses health risks to the consumer. However, it is worth mentioning to say that Geophagia practice may contribute large levels of the most beneficial elements such as Ca, Fe, K, Na, Cu, and Zn, supplying in demand mineral nutrients in the human body.

Abstract: Saffron is one of the most expensive spices in the world, and its popularity as a tasty food additive is spreading rapidly through many cultures and cuisines. Minerals and heavy metals are minor components found in saffron, which play a key role in the identification of the geographical origin, quality control, and food traceability, while they also affect human health. The chemical elements in saffron are measured using various analytical methods, such as techniques based on spectrometry or spectroscopy, including atomic emission spectrometry, atomic absorption spectrometry, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry, and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The present study aimed to review the published articles about heavy metals and minerals in saffron across the world. To date, 64 chemical elements have been found in different types of saffron, which could be divided into three groups of macro-elements, trace elements, and heavy metals (trace elements with a lower gravity/greater than five times that of water and other inorganic sources). Furthermore, the chemical elements in the saffron samples of different countries have a wide range of concentrations. These differences may be affected by geographical condition such as physicochemical properties of the soil, weather and other environmental conditions like saffron cultivation and its genotype.

Marine space is constantly threatened by various sources of pollution that may reduce its economic potential and have negative repercussions on human health. This study aims to assess heavy metals contamination of eight fish species and their impact on human health. Heavy metals such as cadmium, lead, copper and zinc were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry in fresh, cooked and fried fish. The results found in fresh fish (cadmium: 0.002 to 0.005 mg / kg, lead: 0 to 0.031 mg / kg, copper: 0.0045 to 0.305 mg / kg, zinc: 0.1245 to 0.6195 mg / kg), in cooked fish (cadmium: 0.0035 to 0.005 mg / kg, lead: 0 to 0.01 mg / kg, copper: 0 to 0.021 mg / kg, zinc: 0.171 to 0.327 mg / kg) and in fried fish (cadmium: 0.004 mg / kg, lead: 0 to 0.007 mg / kg, copper: 0 to 0.016 mg / kg, zinc: 0.0875 to 0.5065 mg / kg) showed that heavy metal levels are all below the standard values accepted by FAO / WHO. The consumption of these fish could therefore have no negative effect on the population’s health. Both types of cooking have both positive and negative effects on the heavy metal reduction in fish species. Although the concentrations of heavy metals are not worrying, the vigilance of the populations and a variation of the diet are important to guarantee a better health.Keywords: Heavy metals, health impact, Atlantic see fish, Cotonou.

Pollen contains nutritional elements – carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, vitamins, minerals, trace elements. The pollen contains also important amount of polyphenolic compounds, primarily antioxidants. Because the pollen is rich in nutrients, honeybee-collected pollen is recommended as a dietary supplement. The product can be used as dietary supplements to enrich food with valuable nutrients performing important functions in the human body. Pollen is a bee product affected by contaminants of various origins. In addition to important nutrients, it may also contain heavy metals that are harmful to human health. May be contaminated from air and soil by heavy metals and pesticides.

Тhe analysis of metabolic violations and microelement disbalance is presented for the workers of the fillings stations on territory of KHMAO – Yugra. The expressed changes are set in the processes of oxidizing stress and antioxidant defence. In the hairs was registered the meaningful exceeding of concentration of toxic chemical elements (cadmium, lead) and iron possessing pro-oxidant properties on a background reliable to low concentration of the universal antagonist of heavy metals – by a calcium and trace elements possessing antioxidant activity (selenium, zinc) – in the organism.

Since 1998, a monitoring program is periodically performed to assess the environmental and human health impact of air chemicals potentially emitted by a hazardous waste incinerator (HWI) located in Constantí (Catalonia, Spain). In 2017, samples of hair were collected from 94 schoolchildren (aged 10–13 years) living nearby and the levels of 11 trace elements (As, Be, Cd, Cr, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sn, Tl and V) were determined. The concentrations showed the following descending order: Pb > Hg > Ni > Sn > Mn > Cr. In turn, As, Be and Tl were not detected, while Cd and V were found only in a few samples. Some metal levels were significantly, positively correlated. Some significant differences were also noticed according to the gender and the specific zone of residence. Finally, the levels of trace elements showed fluctuations through time. Cr and Pb showed a significant decrease in comparison to the concentrations obtained in the baseline study (1998). According to the current results, metal emissions from the HWI are not relevant in terms of human health impact since their levels were similar and even lower than those reported in other contaminated areas.

AbstractIn the present study, the concentrations of trace elements in PM10 were determined and analyzed at 115 monitoring stations in Romania throughout the period 2009–2018. The spatiotemporal distribution of trace element concentrations of PM10, the source apportionment and health impact assessment, was carried out. The results showed a very high multi-annual mean concentration for PM10 and trace elements as well. The multiannual average concentration of PM10 was higher by 29.75% than the World Health Organization recommendation. All studied air pollutants showed a decreasing trend during the studied years, showing with 17.84%, 50.21%, 43.36%, 11.27%, and 72.09% lower values for PM10, As-, Cd-, Ni-, and Pb-, respectively, due to environmental regulations. To assess the human health impact, the hazard quotient (HQ) and cancer risk (CR) were calculated using the health risk model developed by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The Cd and Ni might present a non-carcinogenic risk to both adults and children; however, the hazard quotient values are higher than the safe limit, with 9.53 and 1.93, respectively. In addition, our study results revealed that the inhalation of As, Cd and the dermal absorption of all studied trace elements were considered as the most important risk factors for developing cancer, especially in case of adults.

Heavy metals are identically Pb, Cd and micronutrients elements like Ca, Mg, Al, Cu and Zn were quantitatively estimated using Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (FAAS). Similarly, heavy metals such as As and Hg were quantitatively estimated by Hydride Generation Technique i.e. Cold Vapor Atomic Absorption Spectrometry method expending nitrogen as carrier gas in 30 herbal cosmetic preparations available in Indian markets. The results designate that among the toxic heavy metals. In the present study, Arsenic was found significantly well below the permissible limit, but Cd was found above the permissible limit in the all samples. Trace elements like Ca and Mg were found in higher amount than compare to Al, Cu, and Zn. Presence of trace elements can corroborate to be beneficial but existence of toxic heavy metals in such amounts certainly has adverse effects on the consumer health who always take the herbal products in an impression of being safe because of the natural origin. In conclusion, execution of strict and isolated regulatory guidelines and promotion of Good Analytical Practice (GAP), Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Good Agricultural and Control Practices (GACP) is suggested for herbal cosmetics by WHO and other regulatory agencies. This study presents the status of heavy metals and trace elements in marketed herbal cosmetic formulations and provides a simple and convenient AAS method which can effectively be adopted at Industrial level for the quality control and standardization of herbal cosmetic preparations and other related products.

Abstract. The following chemical elements in sheep wool originating from Poland (Polish Mountain Sheep), Greece (Karagounico breed), and Syria (Awassi breed) were analysed: macroelements (Ca, P, Na, K, Mg, S), trace elements (Al, Ba, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Sr, Ti, Zn) and heavy metals (As, Cd Hg, Pb). Some statistically significant differences were observed between the content of the examined elements in sheep wool collected in the above countries. Sulphur, calcium, sodium and potassium were found in the highest amounts, while arsenic, cadmium and mercury occurred in the lowest quantity.
