From a perspective of patient-centered healthcare, exploring patients' (a) preconceptions, (b) treatment experiences, (c) quality of life, (d) satisfaction, (e) illness understandings, and (f) design are all critical components in improving primary health care and research. Utilizing qualitative approaches to discover patients' experiences can provide valuable information for practitioners and investigators alike. In this paper, the author describes how researchers can select from among five major qualitative designs (i.e., primary qualitative research, qualitative evaluation, collaborative inquiry, mixed method, and qualitative meta-study) and five preeminent qualitative methodologies (i.e., descriptive, phenomenology, grounded theory, ethnography, and narrative) to create studies to meet their patient-centered research needs.

This paper reviews three research articles concerning the methodologies of quantitative and qualitative research. The body of knowledge can be used as a guide for novice researchers who wanted to have in-depth understanding about the nature and underpinnings of each research design. The first article written by Beverly Hancock, ‘Trent for Research and Development in Primary Care: An Introduction to Qualitative Research (2002)’, emphases on the foundations of qualitative research in application to primary health care setting; the second article authored by Gary Rolfe, ‘Validity, Trustworthiness, and Rigor: Quality and the Idea of Qualitative Research’ (2006), accentuates the methodological `issues in nursing research; and the last article written by Looi Theam Choy, ‘The Strengths and Weaknesses of Research Methodology: Comparison and Complimentary between Qualitative and Quantitative Approaches’ (2014), spotlights the similarities and differences of both research methodologies in the field of social sciences. Fundamentally, it would specify a necessary knowledge, adequate information, and appropriateness in the applicability of the research design. Likewise, it would stipulate a realization for the readers about the coexistence of both research approaches in any field of investigation.

Abstract Background Recently, first steps were taken to educate primary care nurses in Belgium and consequently trained practice nurses have only recently been introduced in Belgian general practices. Therefore, it is unclear what the experiences of general practitioners (GPs) and trained practice nurses are concerning these new multidisciplinary collaborations. With this study we would like to report new insights in the visions and experiences of GPs and practice nurses concerning the new postgraduate education for practice nurses, the current and future roles and responsibilities taken on by practice nurses, and the experienced collaboration between GPs and practice nurses. Methods A qualitative research methodology was chosen, based on the principles of a descriptive qualitative research design. This study was conducted in primary healthcare in Belgium. Four focus group interviews were conducted. A total of twenty practice nurses and ten GPs participated. The practice nurses had followed or were currently following the postgraduate program for practice nurses, all the GPs were experienced in collaborating with a trained practice nurse. Results Four major themes could be derived from the data: practice nurses’ roles and responsibilities, importance of protocol care, consequences of the collaboration, and future opportunities and perspectives. GPs expressed the importance of education for practice nurses, in order for them to take on more responsibilities in the practices. Trained practice nurses showed more initiative towards taking on a broader range of tasks. They both expressed the importance of care protocols in support of a good multidisciplinary collaboration. The impact on the daily practice was experienced as far-reaching by GPs. While collaborating with trained practice nurses, GPs experienced the ability to provide a higher quality of care. Conclusion Both GPs and trained practice nurses have positive experiences about providing shared care in general practices. GPs were surprised by the initiative, shown by practice nurses, and by the broad range of tasks nurses took on. The impact of this collaboration on both the daily practice and the quality of patient care, is unanimously experienced as positive, even though it entails a higher workload. GPs have specific future expectations about the practice nurse education and roles.

Background Providing patient-centered fertility care is known to improve quality of life and can reduce anxiety and depression. In a previous study, we established the need for a web-based app providing personalized information and interactive functionalities among couples undergoing intracytoplasmic sperm injection with surgically retrieved sperm. Objective This study aimed to design, develop, and qualitatively evaluate a multifaceted web-based app for infertile couples undergoing intracytoplasmic sperm injection with surgically retrieved sperm during their treatment trajectory. Methods The web-based app was developed in three phases: (1) we established a patient-centered functional design, (2) developed the app in collaboration with medical and technical professionals, and (3) qualitatively evaluated the app among couples using a think-aloud method. Results The basis of the app is the couple’s visualized treatment trajectory. The app provides personalized and interactive functionalities; for example, customized information and communication options. During qualitative evaluation, myFertiCare was highly appreciated and received a median score of 8 out of 10. The main improvements made upon conclusion of the think-aloud sessions were related to faster login and easier app navigation. Conclusions A patient-centered web-based app aimed at guiding couples through their fertility treatment course was systematically designed, developed, and positively evaluated by patients and medical and technical professionals.

Abstract Background: Patient-centered care (PCC) approach has continued to gain recognition globally as the key to providing quality healthcare. However, this concept is not fully integrated into the management of primary health care (PHC) in existing nursing practice due to numerous challenges. Among these challenges is the perception of nursing on PCC in the Primary Health Care system. This study seeks to present the results of qualitative research performed at various selected PHC centers on nurses’ perceptions in PCC practice.Aim: This study aims at exploring the perception of nurses on PCC.Method: A qualitative research approach was adopted for this study. This study involved thirty local government PHC centers located in Osun State of southwest Nigeria. The sample comprised 28 female nurses and 7 male nurses. Data were collected through a semi-structured interview schedule in different sessions that were conducted on a one on one basis. Thereafter, data analysis was performed using thematic analysis and NVivo 12 software to generate themes, subthemes, and codes. Results: The findings of the study revealed a number of perceptions on PCC that were categorized into positive and negative themes. The negative themes include: Poor approach by the nurses and lack of enforcement agency. The positive themes that emerged include: Outcome-driven healthcare, valued care provider, communication to sharpen care, and driven healthcare service. In addition, the findings established a positive correlation between perception and years of working experience. 68.5 % of the participants, who had working experience in the range of 12 – 31 years, expressed a mixed perception of PCC practice. The remaining 31.5 % of the participants interviewed who had working experience in the range of 2, 6 – 11 years, expressed positive perceptions on the provision of PCC. Conclusion: From the findings of this study, there is a need for the government to enforce the utilization and provision of PCC in the PHC setting. This should be done through the provision of an enabling environment in the PHC setting. In addition, the government should provide regulations and monitoring mechanisms in the PHC institutions. Enforcement agencies should also offer opportunities for continuous training to enhance the nursing care skills of nurses to stimulate and sustain improved healthcare services. Lastly, the government should remunerate and promote nurses based on merit as another means of supporting improved healthcare service delivery by the nurses.

IntroductionChina has pioneered advances in primary health care (PHC) and public health for a large and diverse population. To date, the current state of PHC in China has not been subjected to systematic assessments. Understanding variations in primary care services could generate opportunities for improving the structure and function of PHC.Methods and analysisThis paper describes a nationwide PHC study (PEACE MPP Primary Health Care Survey) conducted across 31 provinces in China. The study leverages an ongoing research project, the China Patient-centered Evaluative Assessment of Cardiac Events (PEACE) Million Persons Project (MPP). It employs an observational design with document acquisition and abstraction and in-person interviews. The study will collect data and original documents on the structure and financing of PHC institutions and the adequacy of the essential medicines programme; the education, training and retention of the PHC workforce; the quality of care; and patient satisfaction with care. The study will provide a comprehensive assessment of current PHC services and help determine gaps in access and quality of care. All study instruments and documents will be deposited in the Document Bank as an open-access source for other researchers.Ethics and disseminationThe central ethics committee at the China National Centre for Cardiovascular Disease (NCCD) approved the study. Written informed consent has been obtained from all patients. Findings will be disseminated in future peer reviewed papers, and will inform strategies aimed at improving the PHC in China.Trial registration numberNCT02953926

Different mix of clients visit primary health care (PHC) facilities, and the quality of services is critical even in rural communities. The study objective was to determine the relationship between socio-demographic characteristics and client satisfaction with the quality of PHC services in Calabar Municipality, Cross River State, Nigeria. Specifically to describe aspects of the health facilities that affect client satisfaction; determine the health-care providers’ attitude that influences client satisfaction; and determine the socio-demographic characteristics that influence client satisfaction with PHC services. A cross-sectional survey was adopted. Ten PHCs and 500 clients utilizing services in PHC centers in Calabar Municipality were randomly selected. Clients overall satisfaction with PHC services was high (80.8%). Divorced clients were less (75.0%) satisfied than the singles and the married counterparts (81%), respectively. Clients that were more literate as well as those with higher income were less satisfied, 68.0% and 50.0%, respectively, compared to the less educated and lower-income clients, 92.0% and 85.0% respectively. These differences in satisfaction were statistically significant (P = 0.001). Hence, it was shown that client characteristics such as income and literacy level show a significant negative relationship with the clients satisfaction with the quality of PHC services in Calabar Municipality.
