Publications and presentations resulting from secondary analysis of qualitative research are less common than similar efforts using quantitative secondary analysis, although online availability of high-quality qualitative data continues to increase. Advantages of secondary qualitative analysis include access to sometimes hard to reach participants; challenges include identifying data that are sufficient to respond to purposes beyond those the data were initially gathered to address. In this paper I offer an overview of secondary qualitative analysis processes and provide general recommendations for researchers to consider in planning and conducting qualitative secondary analysis. I also include a select list of data sources. Well-planned secondary qualitative analysis projects potentially reflect efficient use or reuse of resources and provide meaningful insights regarding a variety of subjects.

Data sharing and reuse are becoming the norm in quantitative research. At the same time, significant skepticism still accompanies the sharing and reuse of qualitative research data on both ethical and epistemological grounds. Nevertheless, there is growing interest in the reuse of qualitative data, as demonstrated by the range of contributions in this special issue. In this research note, we address epistemological critiques of reusing qualitative data and argue that careful curation of data can enable what we term “epistemologically responsible reuse” of qualitative data. We begin by briefly defining qualitative data and summarizing common epistemological objections to their shareability or usefulness for secondary analysis. We then introduce the concept of curation as enabling epistemologically responsible reuse and a potential way to address such objections. We discuss three recent trends that we believe are enhancing curatorial practices and thus expand the opportunities for responsible reuse: improvements in data management practices among researchers, the development of collaborative curation practices at repositories focused on qualitative data and technological advances that support sharing rich qualitative data. Using three examples of successful reuse of qualitative data, we illustrate the potential of these three trends to further improve the availability of reusable data projects.

Qualitative analysis—the analysis of textual, visual, or audio data—covers a spectrum from confirmation to exploration. Qualitative studies can be directed by a conceptual framework, suggesting, in part, a deductive thrust, or driven more by the data itself, suggesting an inductive process. Generic or basic qualitative research refers to an approach in which researchers are simply interested in solving a problem, effecting a change, or identifying relevant themes rather than attempting to position their work in a particular epistemological or ontological paradigm. Other qualitative traditions include grounded theory, narrative analysis, and phenomenology. Grounded theory encompasses several approaches, including objectivist and constructivist traditions, and commonly invites researchers to theorize a process and perhaps identify its contexts and consequences. Narrative analysis is an approach that treats stories not only as representations of events but as narrative events in themselves. Researchers using this approach analyze the form and content of narrative data and examine how these elements serve the storyteller and the story. Other elements often considered include plot, genre, character, values, resolutions, and motifs. Phenomenology is an approach designed to “open up” a phenomenon and make sense of its invariant structure, its identifiable essence across all narrative accounts. In this approach, the focus is on the lived experiences of those deeply familiar with the phenomenon and how they experience the phenomenon as they are going through it, before it is categorized and conceptualized. Each tradition has its own investigative emphasis and particular tools for analysis—specific approaches to coding, memo writing, and final products, such as diagrams, matrices, and condensed reports.

Given the vast and diverse qualitative analytic landscape, what might be a generative starting point for researchers who desire to learn how to produce quality qualitative analyses? This question is particularly relevant to researchers new to the field and practice of qualitative research and instructors and mentors who regularly introduce students to qualitative research practices. In this article, we seek to offer what we view as a useful starting point for learning how to do qualitative analysis. We begin by discussing briefly the general landscape of qualitative research methodologies and methods. To contextualize our suggestions, we review the qualitative analytic practices commonly used within human resource development (HRD). Following this, we describe thematic analysis in more detail, including why we believe it is a particularly useful analytic approach to consider when first learning about qualitative analysis. We share seven common practices or important considerations for carrying out a thematic analysis and conclude by highlighting key considerations for assuring quality when conducting a thematic analysis.

COVID-19 has necessitated innovation in many parts of our lives and qualitative research is no exception, as in-person qualitative data collection has been complicated by the constraints of social distancing and the prioritization of participants’ and researchers’ safety. Consequently, virtual methods have quickly gained traction. However, there is little research that comprehensively explores the range of practical, rigorous, and ethical considerations that arise when designing and engaging in virtual qualitative research. Addressing this gap, we examine the process of designing and conducting a virtual qualitative study, using specific examples from our case study of student homelessness in Houston, Texas that drew from semi-structured interviews and the analysis of over 50 documents. Garnering insights from Salmons’ Qualitative e-Research Framework (2016), and benefiting from 22 technical memos that documented our process, we profile the challenges we faced—and choices we made in response—as we designed and conducted our study. Our findings suggest that in practice, engaging in virtual qualitative research, particularly in the era of COVID-19, is a purposive exercise that requires thoughtful, careful analysis around a number of methodological challenges as well as ethical and equity-oriented questions. Our exploratory work has timely implications for qualitative scholars in the current COVID-19 context, but also showcases the potential to conduct high-quality, rigorous, ethical qualitative research in a virtual format, offering a glimmer of hope for more equitable qualitative research in contexts of crisis and beyond.

AbstractThe COVID-19 pandemic, and associated social restrictions, have amplified women’s experiences of domestic abuse (DA). In usual times, female DA survivors reach out to those around them (friends, family members, neighbors, and colleagues) for support. Accessing of both professional and informal support by survivors has increased during the pandemic. Informal supporters are often deeply invested and immersed in situations of DA because of the closeness of relationships. The accounts of informal supporters are rarely sought, yet these are people who may have a considerable awareness of what is happening. The aim of this study was to explore how the pandemic had impacted people’s assessment of abusive situations and their ability to provide informal support. This paper reports a secondary analysis of qualitative data collected in 2020 in England. The data were gathered in 18 in-depth interviews with people who knew a female friend, relative, neighbor, or colleague who had experienced DA. The age range of participants was 25–69 years, three were men and fifteen were women. A reflexive thematic analysis was carried out. Findings indicated: (i) the pandemic had changed people’s ability to read situations and assess risk (ii) perpetrators were exploiting the pandemic to further abuse (iii) within the context of the pandemic there was additional challenge to offering support (iv) informal supporters found creative ways to remain in-touch and to continue offering support. Further research with informal supporters is needed to ascertain how best to support and equip people, without imposing an impossible burden.

Background: Although a precise percentage of athletes doping has remained elusive, evidence to date suggest that the majority of athletes are ‘clean’. Protecting clean sport, and the rights of athletes to a clean sport environment, is at the centre of anti-doping policies. To better support and enable clean athletes and sport, an understanding of the clean athlete lifeworld is required. This study explores and discusses several ways that clean athletes have been and are affected by doping and anti-doping. Methods: Qualitative Secondary Analysis (QSA) was used to re-analyse and interpret 13 focus group transcripts generated from the ‘Research-Embedded Strategic Plan for Anti-Doping Education Clean Sport Alliance Initiative for Tackling Doping’ (RESPECT) project to explore the impact of doping and anti-doping on clean athletes (see Petroczi et al. 2021). The sample in the parent study included 82 self-declared clean elite athletes, active and recently retired, from Germany (n=23) Ireland (n=14), the Netherlands (n=15), Slovenia (n=14), and the UK (n=16), who collectively represented 36 different sports. Results: Reflexive thematic analysis generated three themes. The first overarching theme captured the harm done by clean athletes having to coexist with dopers (i.e., denied medals, money, moments and memories; altered expectations and perceptions of the self; incite suspicion). The second overarching theme highlighted how clean athletes are undermined by lenient and poor treatment of dopers and clean athletes respectively. The third overarching theme described the anxiety experienced by clean athletes over mistakes that could lead to anti-doping rules violations. Conclusion: The impacts of doping on clean athletes - direct or indirect - are experienced by all clean athletes in some way. The results indicate that current approaches to anti-doping rule compliance frequently undermine clean athletes and the perceive legitimacy of the anti-doping system. With considerable qualitative data on athletes’ views available, secondary data analysis offers a cost effective, quick, and feasible approach for anti-doping research.

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui upaya dan kendala-kendala guru pendidikan Pancasila dan Kewarganegaraan dalam mengimplementasikan pendidikan karakter pada siswa SMA Negeri 2 Donggo. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif dengan pendekatan deskriptif. Subyek informasi adalah guru PPKn, Kepala Sekolah, dan Siswa. Teknik pengambilan sampel menggunakan pursposif sampling. Data penelitian diperoleh melalui metode observasi, wawancara, dan dokumentasi. Jenis data berupa data kualitatif. Sumber data yaitu sumber data primer dan sekunder. Analisis data yang dipakai adalah reduksi data, penyajian data, dan verivikasi. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian dapat disimpulkan bahwa upaya guru pendidikan Pancasila dan Kewarganegaraan dalam mengimplementasikan pendidikan karakter pada siswa sudah terlaksana dengan baik. Hal ini terlihat dari pengintegrasian pendidikan karakter oleh guru dalam setiap kali pertemuan melaui mata pelajaran dan di luar mata pelajaran atau partisipasi nyata. Sedangkan  kendala-kendala guru pendidikan Pancasila dan Kewarganegaraan dalam mengimplementasikan pendidikan karakter terhadap siswa yaitu faktor sikap dari siswa, faktor keluarga, dan faktor lingkungan pergaulan. The purpose of this research is to know the effort and constraints civics and Citizenship teachers in implementing character education in students of SMA Negeri 2 Donggo community. This research is qualitative research with a descriptive approach. The subject of the information is PPKn teachers, principals, and students. The technique of sampling using purposive sampling. Research data obtained through the method of observation, interviews, and documentation. The type of data in the form of qualitative data. Data sources, namely primary and secondary data sources. Analysis of the data used is the reduction of the data, the presentation of data, and verify. Based on the results of the study it can be concluded that the efforts of the civics and Citizenship teachers in implementing character education on students have already done well. This is apparent from the integrating character education by teachers in every time the meeting via the subjects and outside subjects or real participation. While constraints civics and Citizenship teachers in implementing character education towards students i.e. students of attitude factors, family factors, and environmental factors in socialization.

The purpose of this research is to find out how the epistemology of Islamic character education in Islamic Elementery School. This research uses descriptive qualitative research methods. The data used are qualitative data. Data obtained from observation, interviews, and documentation. The data analysis technique used in this research is qualitative analysis and hermeneutics (interpretation). Islamic character education is applied through habituation activities carried out in madrasas. The teacher has a very important role in shaping the character of Islamic students. The teacher will be an example or role model for their students. Among the habituation activities in madrassas that form Islamic character include shaking hands with teachers, praying dhuha in congregation, tadarus Al Qur'an, and Tahfidz Juz Amma. This habit will form a character that is respectful of the teacher, close to Allah SWT, diligent in praying, love al quran.

This article introduces the special issue, “Diverse Approaches to Qualitative Data Analysis for Applied Research,” in which seven papers analyze one shared data set to illustrate different approaches to qualitative analysis. In addition to discussing the articles included in the special issue, this introduction provides an overview of applied research—highlighting some of the implications for qualitative research—and discusses how researchers could use the special issue to compare different qualitative approaches to choose one most appropriate for a given project’s goals.

AbstractContent or text analysis is one of the most common evaluation methods employed in qualitative research. Despite its wide application, however, a clear structure of how such evaluation should be conducted is often lacking due to the complexity of qualitative data. As a consequence, highly differentiated category systems with small-step subdivisions of categories and sub-categories are often used, leading to a loss of context both among categories and for the content as a whole. The aim of this paper is to describe the Phenomena-centered Text Analysis (PTA) as a novel form of qualitative text analysis, which takes these shortcomings into account by focusing on text-inherent phenomena. These phenomena are identified in two preceding quantitative analysis steps that identifying overlapping coding for subsequently qualitative analysis. We explain the structured code- and context-based approach of this new method and demonstrate its application with an empirical example. The PTA contributes to an increasing demand of qualitative methods especially for small-scale projects that need a structured kind of qualitative data analysis.
