The Importance of Agricultural Land Used in the Production of Agricultural Products in Greece

Abstract In Greece, agriculture plays a key role in supporting the socio-economic sustainability of rural areas, as this sector is the main user of agricultural land. In Greece, agriculture covers a large part of its territory. It accounts for about 30% of the total area. The total cultivated agricultural land (arable crops, horticultural land, permanent crops) amounts to 3,221,680 hectares compared to the 171,603,000 hectares of the EU-27. In 2018 the main crop groups per year were distributed as follows: 53.4% of cultivated area (1,719,600 hectares) was used for arable crops, 1.9% (61,890 hectares) for horticultural, 33.7% (1,085,100 hectares) for permanent crops and 11.0% (354,760 hectares) of arable land was under set-aside. 56% of arable land is located in lowland areas, while the rest is in mountainous or semi-mountainous areas. An important parameter for crop efficiency is the irrigated agricultural area. One-third of the arable land is irrigated. The highest irrigation rates (97%) are occupied by horticultural crops, 43% by arable land, 38% by tree crops and 36% by viticulture. The average size of agricultural holdings is less than 5.0 hectares and the number of large farms has increased. Thus, 76.0% of rural households have a size of less than 5 hectares, while less than 1% have a size of more than 50 hectares. It is worth noting that agriculture must take care of soil protection, water quality, natural resources because these are vital factors in ensuring the sustainability of humanity. Agricultural land is an important natural resource and forms the basis for food production. Global and local socio-economic and environmental changes are often the driving forces of changes in land cover and land use. Land abandonment in rural areas is one of the processes observed in Europe today and usually leads to increased afforestation. The intensity of this process in Central Europe is linked to the political and economic changes that took place at the end of the 20th century. The study objective was to identify the natural and socio-economic factors of this process in Lublin Province—a major region of agricultural production in Poland. From 1990 to 2018, over 130,000 ha were excluded from agricultural use, which represents 7% of the arable land in 1990. Land abandonment showed considerable spatial differences when comparing different counties: its magnitude ranged from 4% to 13% of the county area. At the same time, due to the specific type of land use in the province (small farm holdings divided into several fields), the intensity of land abandonment was underestimated when based on overview data (CORINE). It was observed that the intensity of this process was correlated with the natural conditions (topography, soils) for agricultural production and the socio-economic characteristics (area of arable land, forest cover changes, farm size) of the counties as well as the absorption of Common Agricultural Policy funds.

The article is devoted to substantiating the prospects for increasing the marginal volumes of agricultural production for export in the next four years. Two scenarios of such production are considered: 1) expansion and 2) intensification of the use of land resources. As part of the development of the first scenario, an analysis of the distribution of unused agricultural land, including arable land, by federal districts was carried out. Also, based on the forecast of the introduction of additional annual volumes of acreage in the subjects of the Federation, the calculation of additional volumes of agricultural production, which can be expected in the next four years, was carried out. The analysis of data on the increase in the yield of export-oriented crops over the past five years has been carried out, in the framework of the second scenario, the calculation of the projected additional yield due to the intensification of agriculture is presented. The results of the study indicate that the intensification of agriculture will have the greatest impact on the growth of production and export of agricultural products in the near future.

The subject of the study presented in this article is the economic relations arising due to the progress of the urbanization that leads to changes in agricultural production. For a long time in Russia a reduction of agricultural land, arable land and crops takes place. One reason for this is the global progress of urbanization. Changes in agricultural land use occur across the country however this process is uneven in different regions. Among all regions Moscow and Moscow region significantly stand out. The study showed that in the more urbanized regions of the country reduction of the agricultural land and changes in agricultural land use are greater than in less urbanized ones.

Abstract This paper presents the questionnaire results of the research on implications of the effects of Slovenia’s accession to the European Union (EU) on structural changes in agricultural holdings (AHs) in the case of Škofjeloška hilly-mountain rural areas. The effects are studied based on the analysis of income diversification of AHs three years before the Slovenian accession to the EU in 2000 and six years after the Slovenian accession to the EU in 2010. Strategies of AHs on the basis of the questionnaire were analysed in early 2011. Income diversification of AHs with non-agricultural employment and off-farm incomes is necessary for survival for the majority of AHs. There are observed differences in structural changes in the AHs between areas with different natural conditions for agricultural production, and particularly in the extent and in the direction of structural changes by socioeconomic types of AHs. Structural changes inhibit non-economic objectives of AHs, while non-agricultural employment has a two-way influence.

The paper studies the issue of the use of disposed agricultural land through the example of LLC “Alliance-agro in Sengileevsky district of the Ulyanovsk region. The authors consider the grounds for cultural and technical work and provide the results of a survey of unused arable land on the farm. A technology for the development of disposed agricultural land is proposed. Everyone knows that agricultural land is of particular importance as a means of agricultural production and is the second largest category of land in the unified land fund of the Russian Federation in terms of area, which includes the best and fertile lands making up the heritage of the country. Despite the fact that the schemes for the use of agricultural land are developed, many questions of a theoretical, methodological and applied nature need to be improved, since this is associated with incessant changes in the legal and organizational systems of land use. As a result of irrational use of land, degradation, littering, overgrowing with trees and shrubs of agricultural areas occurs. These processes lead to the fact that fertile lands are withdrawn from circulation. Our research is aimed to solve the problems in the field of the improvement of the cadastral registration of lands, the process of the organization of rational land use, as well as the most effective use of unused lands overgrown with trees and shrubs. The solution to this problem will help the rational transformation of the agricultural land use system and increase in their efficiency. Moreover it will help to solve the problem of the involvement of unused land in agricultural production and increase the efficiency of cadastral registration of agricultural land. As a result of the land clearing proposed by the authors, the sites of this object will be put into agricultural circulation, where any zoned agricultural crop can be grown from the first year of development in case of a favorable water-air regime in the root layer and complex agrochemical cultivation.

Motives: The fragmentation of land and the distribution of plots in rural areas negatively affects the profitability and efficiency of agricultural production. Land consolidation is an activity that facilitates the improvement of the spatial structure and at the same time contributes to the sustainable development of rural areas. European Union (EU) funding helps to improve, among others the area structure of agricultural land in the EU countries. Aim: From these premises, the purpose of the work results, which is the assessment of the effects of the performed consolidation of land with EU funding. The detailed analysis covered 16 precincts from the Podkarpackie voivodeship and 3 precincts from the Świętokrzyskie voivodeship. The assessment of the consolidation of land was made in 19 consolidated objects in the years 2007-2020. In practice, there is a problem of how to demonstrate the effects of land consolidation? This article proposes to present the four most important effects of land consolidation in the form of the following coefficients: W1 (coefficient of reducing the number of plots as a result of consolidation), W2 (coefficient of increasing the average plot area in the consolidation facility), W3 (coefficient of reducing the number of plots in an individual farm as a result of consolidation), W4 (index of road network density in merged area) are a reliable image of the results of the land consolidation performed in the studied area. Results: The results were obtained. Index W1 in the examined objects indicated the result of 34.0% for the Podkarpackie voivodeship, and 28.8% for the Świętokrzyskie. Index W2 in the Podkarpackie voivodeship is 27.0%, and in the Świętokrzyskie it is higher and amounts to 29.7%. Index W3 which amounts to 39.4% of the average number of plots in a farm in the Podkarpackie voivodeship and much higher, amounting to 46.6% in the Świętokrzyskie. Index W4 for the Podkarpackie voivodeship is + 14.7%. However, for the Świętokrzyskie it is only + 3.7%. Summing up, the study analyzed four indicators showing the effects of land consolidation in southern Poland. The results obtained for these two voivodeships were similar. However, unsatisfactory in terms of the effects of land consolidation.

Since 1990s the bloom of industrialization and urbanization brings the changes ofsocial and economic issue of Vietnam rural areas. During this process, ruralhouseholds have reduced agricultural land for cultivating. From the status of foodproducers now they become food consumers. Through surveying 215 householdsin Bac Ninh province, the study shows that that industrialization and landconversion process affected household food security in several aspects: the lost ofagricultural land and surplus agricultural production decrease; unguaranteed decentwork for peasants and high living cost; the decline of living quality and foodsafety. Food consumption of the family has shifted from self-reliance to the waythat more depend on market which increases food expense propotion on householdbudget. However, spending more on food does not mean satisfied since thesuspiciousness of food quality. Household food security becomes more vulnerable,especially for households that have limited access to land and incapability offinding stable jobs. One of the strategies of rural households is diversify theirlivelihoods, accepted multi-spacial household model. And when income from nonfarmjobs could relatively supply enough their need of cash, they would ratherconsume high quality food than grow and sell high yielding variable. Ruralhouseholds move back to the local traditional agricultural activities to ensure theirown food quality.

In this paper more focus towards the rural areas development is given. Remarkable agricultural production is being gained by active involvement of rural population in available agricultural land. In this article the review is focused on agro-tourism. The main purpose of this paper is to know the situation of rural areas in the context of agro-tourism. Tanahun district has been selected for this review study where 1.22% of the total population is working within 1.05% agricultural land of the country. Agro tourism allows close link of outsiders with the inhabitants of rural villages where small farmers have been involved in traditional way of agriculture. This type of integration surely helps for running home stay and employing rural youth. Thus, agro-tourism can become the best option for socio-economic promotion of rural areas in the district. This type of development model will certainly be helpful for the development of rural areas in other Provinces.

Due to historical circumstances, the development of Lithuanian commercial farmer’s farms is slow; however, farmer’s farms are very important to the vitality of rural areas while developing agricultural commodities and goods. The purpose of this article – to analyze the structural changes in farmer’s farms and present the directions of future development. Structural changes in Lithuanian farmer’s farms during the 2005 – 2015 timeframe were analyzed while looking at the diagnostic indicators, which are the following: the number of farmer’s farms, the structure of farmer’s farms according to their size, the activity units of farmer’s farms, age of farmers, farmer’s farms sources of income. In order to study the statistical data, methods of systemization, logical analysis and generalization were applied. The analysis of the statistical data suggests that the following structural changes are taking place in Lithuanian farmer’s farms: the number of registered farmer’s farms increases and the farmers’ are getting younger. One of the most significant factors causing the structural changes in holdings – the EU financial support for the agricultural development and the changing customer demands. More and more often rural areas perform residential function and new living areas are developed. There is a predominance of the small farms (up to 10 hectares). This is mainly a result of the reform in agricultural sector at the end of 20th century. Many small agricultural holdings were established due to this reform. However, significant changes occur while choosing and/or combining the activity units of the farm: the number of farms specializing in crops increases, the number of the holdings focusing on livestock and combined farming (crops and livestock) is declining; also, farmer’s farms with diversified income or the activity units grow in number. Limited opportunities to intensify agricultural production in small farmer’s farms caused the fact that activities or income were diversified. The model of family farm remains; however, the relation between activity and the usage of family’s labour in farm activity changes.

The erosion impact on the spatial variability of selected soil properties was picked for the purpose of the research. The chosen locality is situated close to Křenovice (Vyškov district). Sites with soil type chernozem are exploited as arable land almost everywhere in this region. The agricultural production, however, has had staggering impact during last 80 years and has caused many degradation changes of soil properties of chernozems. This work aims to point out the water erosion impact on the spatial variability of total nitrogen, total organic carbon and C/N ratio, at steep grounds with no soil protection from erosion on loess parent material.
