The emergence of Covid-19 has deeply disturbed the aviation industry in many aspects. This study examines the effect of Covid-19 on departure delay time and flight cancellation at Philadelphia International Airport (PHL). By analyzing data of nearly 200,000 flights departed from PHL between January 2019 and February 2021, the research found that Covid-19 noticeably reduced flight departure delay time, and flight cancellations sharply rose then quickly dropped. Furthermore, flight departure delay time is highly correlated with the number of flights: the lower the number of flights, the lower the delay time. The ultimate cause is the lack of passengers, as the number of passengers dictates the number of flights an airline can successfully operate.

Purpose Dubai’s aviation industry is one of the most leading global aviation centers with a customer centric focus and tremendous challenges. The purpose of this paper is to determine the main Airport service quality (ASQ) drivers and evaluate the perception of travelers of Dubai International Airport (DXB) terminal 3. Design/methodology/approach Travelers’ feedback is captured through interviews, initial survey and online review, and a more focused survey is developed as the main research tool. A hypothetical model is proposed and analyzed using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and structural equation modeling (SEM). The sample includes 275 passengers who had experience with DXB services. Findings The CFA supported by SEM was used and reveled check-in, assurance and empathy, and availability to some extent as the main constructs influencing travelers’ satisfaction and impression of DXB. Moreover, Kruskal–Wallis test suggested that nationality impact travelers’ experience of the airport. The study stresses the need to consider differences in perceptions among different travelers’ groups with different ethnical backgrounds. Research limitations/implications The external validity of the results can be enhanced by including more terminals and larger sample size. Terminal 3 is administered by one company and provide services for one airline. Focusing on terminal 3 only improves the internal validity of this study but limits the external one. Practical implications Decision makers can use the findings to improve travelers’ experience at airport. For example, customizing services for certain groups can improve experience of travelers significantly. Originality/value Based on the surveyed literature, there is little information or guidance on how to cluster constructs that best describe passengers’ journey in airports. Second, there are some conflicting results regarding the impact of nationalities and purpose of travel on travelers’ satisfaction. The purpose of this paper is to address the two gaps and identify factors that influence ASQ at DXB terminal 3. The investigation would help DXB management to understand what makes travelers satisfied during their journey at the airport.

Employees and employers are facing issues in work life balance. It has become a difficult domain now, because the work needs have increased due to an increase in work pressure and complexities in handling the technology. As there are drastic changes in the rules and regulations in the work scenario of the aviation industry, it makes work life balance of employees difficult and set more hurdles. Hence there are many distractions and imbalances in the life of women employees in the aviation industry working across all levels. This work pressure is creating high level of hurdles in maintaining a harmonious job and family life, especially for female aviation employees. Data is collected from 50 female crew members working at Cochin International Airport. The objective of this study is to analyze the work life balance of working females of Cochin International Airport and its influence on their personal and specialized lives. The result of the study shows that the management should frame certain policies which will help employees to have the balance among their personal and expert lives.

This paper evaluates the impact of trading locations on equity returns by examining the stock price behaviour of three Anglo-Dutch dual-listed companies which result from mergers where two corporations agree to function as a single operating business, but maintain separate identities. The shares of these stocks are traded not only in their home market but also on several US stock exchanges in the form of American Depository Receipts. Regressing the return differentials on these dual-listed and cross-listed stocks on the relative market index returns and currency changes provides evidence of an apparent violation of the Law of One Price. The regression results show that the return on each part of dual-listed companies is highly correlated with the market on which it is most intensively traded. Similarly, returns on cross-listed stocks have considerably higher co-movement with US market indices and considerably lower co-movement with home-market indices than their home-market counterparts. Market risk premium is not a significant explanatory variable of the location of trade effect.

This article begins by discussing the specific industrial relations challenges of the highly competitive aviation industry. It then reflects on the outcome of the recent intense national debate over industrial relations, exploring the consequences of that debate for practice and policy, and discusses some key issues that remain in play. Although the Fair Work Act 2009 may have come about as a reaction to what many perceive as the ‘excesses’ of Work Choices, the new Act does not so much ‘wind back the clock’ as represent a significant new development in Australia’s long and unique industrial relations history. This article will discuss the impact of the changes, to date, made by the Fair Work Act on one organization, including the expansion of the ‘safety net’, and how the new compromise between the role of the ‘collective’ and the role of the ‘individual’ struck by the Act has the potential to fundamentally change the nature and structure of bargaining. We offer these comments as practitioners who have worked under successive industrial relations regimes since the early 1980s.

The aim of this paper is to assess the impact of the rivet hole sizing process on the fatigue life based on the example of the structural connections characteristic for riveted joints used in aviation industry. Test specimens reflected the structural connection consisting in a riveted lap joint of an airplane plating stiffened with a T-bar. Connected plates and the T-bar are made of D16CzATW aluminum alloy. 3 mm diameter oval head solid rivets for aviation-related purposes were made of PA24 aluminum. During fatigue tests, individual specimens with non-sized holes and with sized holes were subjected to uniaxial, one-sided, fixed-amplitude loading (R = 0). It can be concluded from the fatigue life comparison that introduction of an additional operation in the riveting process, i.e. the hole sizing, results in significant, about two-fold increase of the fatigue life of the riveted structural connection, even at slight sizing degree. The difference of the specimen damage nature was observed between specimens with sized and non-sized holes.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to present the pollutant gas produced by hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) and the quantity of fuel burned from commercial aircraft at Ordu-Giresun International Airport, Turkey during the landing and take-off (LTO) cycles in 2017. Design/methodology/approach The flight data recorded by the General Directorate of State Airports Authority and the aircraft engine emission data from International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Engine Exhaust Emission Databank were used for calculation. The aircraft and engine types used by the airlines for flight at Ordu-Giresun International Airport were determined. To evaluate the effect of taxi time on emission amounts, analysis and evaluations were made by taking different taxi times into consideration. Findings As a result of the emission analysis, the amount of fuel consumed by the aircraft were calculated as 6,551.52 t/y, and the emission amounts for CO, HC and NOx were estimated as 66.81, 4.20 and 79.97 t/y, respectively. Practical implications This study is aimed to reveal the effect and contribution of taxi time on the emitted emission at the airport during the LTO phase of the aircraft. Originality/value This study helps aviation authorities explain the importance of developing procedures that ensure the delivery of aircraft to flights in minimum time by raising awareness of the impact of taxi time on emitted emissions, and contributes to the determination of an aircraft emission inventory at Ordu-Giresun International Airport.

The directed evolution of enzymes for improved activity or substrate specificity commonly leads to a trade-off in stability. We have identified an activity–stability trade-off and a loss in unfolding cooperativity for a variant (3M) of Escherichia coli transketolase (TK) engineered to accept aromatic substrates. Molecular dynamics simulations of 3M revealed increased flexibility in several interconnected active-site regions that also form part of the dimer interface. Mutating the newly flexible active-site residues to regain stability risked losing the new activity. We hypothesized that stabilizing mutations could be targeted to residues outside of the active site, whose dynamics were correlated with the newly flexible active-site residues. We previously stabilized WT TK by targeting mutations to highly flexible regions. These regions were much less flexible in 3M and would not have been selected a priori as targets using the same strategy based on flexibility alone. However, their dynamics were highly correlated with the newly flexible active-site regions of 3M. Introducing the previous mutations into 3M reestablished the WT level of stability and unfolding cooperativity, giving a 10.8-fold improved half-life at 55 °C, and increased midpoint and aggregation onset temperatures by 3 °C and 4.3 °C, respectively. Even the activity toward aromatic aldehydes increased up to threefold. Molecular dynamics simulations confirmed that the mutations rigidified the active-site via the correlated network. This work provides insights into the impact of rigidifying mutations within highly correlated dynamic networks that could also be useful for developing improved computational protein engineering strategies.

One of the main shortcomings in a field effect diode (FED) is its scaling. Use of an oxide layer in the channel is proposed to enhance the control of the gate on the channel carriers. This is the so-called silicon on raised insulator FED (SORI-FFD) structure. The Shockley–Read–Hall (SRH) mechanism is one of the main components of leakage current in FED devices. The potential induced by the gates in the OFF-state of a SORI-FFD, is larger than that induced by the gates of a regular FED. This reduces, SRH recombination rate. Hence, OFF-state characteristics of the SORI-FED device improves. We evaluate the impact of band-to-band tunneling (BTBT) on the electrical characteristics of Modified FED (M-FED).We show that for channel lengths of 35 nm and lower this device does not turn off. While, the proposed structure makes device channel length scaling possible down to 15 nm. We will also compare electrical characteristics of SORI-FED and M-FED using three metrics: gate delay time versus channel length, gate delay time versus I ON /I OFF ratio and energy-delay product versus channel length. Benchmarking results show the proposed FED structure provides improvement in I ON /I OFF ratio and holds promise for future logic transistor applications.

The purpose of this study is to analyze standards as one of the main tools of protectionism in global markets of industrial goods. We use standards for modeling of market competition and adapt this approach for civil aviation markets. The role of local noise standards in civil aircraft markets is discussed. Imposition of more stringent aviation noise standards is modelled in the form of a two-person non-zero-sum game. Players are aircraft corporations that conduct research and development to reduce noise and lobby for stricter regulations in their controlled markets. The model can be used to predict that tighter aviation noise standards will be imposed and to justify the strategy of Russian aviation industry and science. The proposed approach can be adapted for other industries with strict regulations (in terms of safety, ecology). Such estimation allows us to assess whether it is in the country’s interests to participate in the standards race or not. It is shown that the equilibrium degree of standards tightening is higher if the players’ market shares are close to equal or individual players have advantages in the cost of production and/or product improvement is highly likely due to the company’s R&D progress.
