The internationalization of higher education has driven Danish universities to increase the amount of teaching in English. But what are the consequences for the quality of the education? Is the quality of the learning outcome compromised when teaching and learning activities take place in a second language? Based on a literature review of existing, research-based literature, this article tries to offer some answers to that question. The first part of the review identifies different research interests, while the second part of the review discusses results from selected studies that have focused on student learning and activity, especially within a Nordic setting.

In this article we intend to find intervention methods to optimize student learning strategies. There is more and more debate about a certain crisis in education and education specialists are trying to find solutions to overcome this situation by focusing on qualitative growth, on changing educational mind-sets and strategies. Change in thinking, attitude and manifestation is the key to success in education. In order to increase the quality of education and teaching, conventional barriers must be broken, educators should be urged to think creatively, find solutions, seek and explore beyond their own limits. Learning activities become more interesting and critical thinking is stimulated though the encouragement of free expression, interpretation from the personal perspective of the assimilated knowledge and connection with the practice. They all lead to the active participation of the educators in their own training. In our research, we have observed a change in attitude and thinking after applying certain strategies of critical thinking during courses.
