This study seeks to look at the relationships among teachers’ academic qualification, availability of quality resources and the performance of students in Mathematics, English and Integrated science of Basic Schools at Kwahu-East in the Eastern Region of Ghana. The authors used a descriptive survey design which adopted the questionnaire, interview and observation in the collection of data. The authors used stratified random sampling in selecting 180 teachers whereas purposive sampling was used in selecting 27 headteachers and District Education Officers which used the Pearson correlation in the analysis. The study revealed that a teacher’s academic qualification obtained through education had no significant relationship with student’s academic performance in the respective subjects being measured by this study. The authors recommend that the Government of Ghana concentrate on providing continuing professional development (CPD) programmes that concentrate on practical situations in the schools and channel more resources to schools.

This research explored the influence of information sources availability on academic performance of secondary school students using a descriptive survey design. One hundred and fifty senior secondary school students were randomly selected from three secondary schools in Osogbo. Data was collected using a self-structured questionnaire that covers all the variables under study. Percentage was used to answer the research questions while regression analysis was used to test the hypotheses postulated. The findings indicated that information sources (library information, teachers information and textbook information) has significant influence on academics performance of student. The result of the hypotheses showed significant relationship between the independent variables (information sources) and dependent variable (academic performance). The value of F-statistic was 627.253 with p <0.05 shows that the overall model was statistically significant. The result revealed that library information, Teachers information and Textbook information have significant combined impact on academics performance of selected senior secondary school in Osun State. It recommended that The school administration should maintain the existing information sources they have and make request to the government for the provisions of this sources.

International Diabetes Federation states that in 2007 there were 246 million people in the world suffering from diabetes and it is expected to increase to 380 million by 2025. DM can cause susceptibility to infections in the human lung organs due to hyperglycemia. The purpose of this study was to determine the lung volume profile in the form of VT, VCI, VCE and VKP in the DM group and non DM group. This study uses a quantitative descriptive survey design with a sample of 60 people, consisting of 30 people from the DM group and 30 people from the Non DM group. The statistical test used in this study is the Independent statistical sample t-test, the Mann-Whitney test and the Pearson correlation. The results showed: (1) There was a significant difference in the DM of the DM group and the Non DM group with p = 0.021 (p <0.05); (2) There were significant differences in VT, VCI, VCE of the DM group and Non DM group with significant values ​​of VT (p = 0,000 <0.05), VCI (p = 0.003 <0.05) and VCE (p = 0.001 <0.05); (3) There was no significant difference in the VKP of the DM group and the Non DM group with p = 0.805 (p <0.05); (4) Relationship between GD and VT (r = 0.220), GD with VCI (r = 0.308), GD with VCE (r = -0.110), GD with VKP (r = 0.219). So it was concluded that there was a positive relationship between GD and VT, VCI, VKP and also there was a negative relationship between GD and VCE. Suggestion: DM sufferers need to conduct routine checks so that health remains well controlled

This study investigates the influence of devolution and politics on the expansion strategies in public training institutions with reference to the Kenya Medical Training College. The specific objectives of the study are to: establish the influence of devolution of health services on the success of expansion strategies in the public training institutions and; determine the influence of politics on the success of expansion strategies in the public training institutions. This study is based on the contingency theory. It adopts the descriptive survey design. The study focuses on 2393 KMTC officers from the 73 KMTC campuses in Kenya, 42 ministries of health officials in the 42 counties that have KMTC campuses, and 42 local leaders from those counties that have KMTC campuses. The total targeted study participants were thus 2477. From these, 10% (248 persons) were sampled. The study used purposive and stratified random sampling techniques to obtain the study sample. Primary data was collected using structured questionnaires and interviews. Data from questionnaires were analysed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 24. Descriptive statistics (frequencies, percentages, and means) were used to describe the central tendencies of the data. In addition, inferential statistics (Pearson Correlation and Multiple Regression Analysis) were also used.  Data from key informants were analysed using content analysis techniques. The findings show that the two study variables influenced the uptake of expansion strategies at KMTC campuses. In this regard, Pearson correlation shows that there was statistical significant relationship between devolution of health services (r=0.322, p<0.001) and; politics (r=0.478, p<0.001) and success of expansion strategies. These findings show that politics was the strongest factor influencing the success of expansion strategies followed by devolution of health services. As such, avoiding the negative influences of the devolution of health services and politics can enhance the success of expansion strategies at KMTC. In this regard, efforts aimed at reducing political patronage as well as interferences of devolved governments in the running of KMTC campuses would enhance the performance of new campuses.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the continuing professional development (CPD) activities undertaken by special librarians in Jamaica, their motivation, the challenges faced and the areas of interest for professional development. Design/methodology/approach Special librarians working in Jamaica were surveyed using an online questionnaire which was disseminated via e-mail. Findings The study indicates that special librarians in Jamaica were engaged in both formal and informal CPD activities. They were motivated by factors such as keeping up to date with changes in librarianship and personal satisfaction. Challenges to participating in CPD include, lack of funding, time constraints and lack of worthwhile options. Areas of interest for CPD were mainly information technology-based. Research limitations/implications The study was limited to the contact lists of the special libraries section of the Library and Information Association of Jamaica (LIAJA) and the Government Library and Information Network of the Jamaica Library and Information Network (JAMLIN). Practical implications The results have implications for the planning and implementation of continuing professional activities for Jamaica’s special librarians. It also fills a gap in library literature regarding the continuing professional activities of special librarians. Originality/value The paper is one of few studies focusing on the CPD activities of special librarians undertaken in a developing country.

Aim: The research sought to find out the perception of students towards Mathematics and how it affects their academic attainment in a Ghanaian context. Study Design: Descriptive survey design was used for the study. Methodology: The main instrument used for the study was questionnaire. The sample size for the study comprised of students selected from the three SHSs in Kumasi metropolis using purposive sampling approach. The sample size for the students consisted of 297 students selected by stratified sampling of which 180 were males and 117 were females. Results: The students have positive perception towards mathematics though they see it to be difficult in a sense that it is important as it is used in their daily lives. The relationship between perception and students Mathematics performance in the study was very weak and negatively related. Conclusion: From the study it can be concluded that students’ perception towards mathematics has no influence or effect on their academic performance in Ghanaian senior high schools. It is recommended that students’ positive perception towards Mathematics must be sustained and improved by teachers and headmasters.

This descriptive survey aimed to determine awareness and participation in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) among nurses (n=30) in a private hospital in Iloilo City. A researcher-made questionnaire was used to gather data. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Mann-Whitney U to test for differences between variables. Results indicated that were nurses were generally aware of the CPD law and its implementing rules and regulations (IRR). However, while nurses understood the concept of CPD and the new requirement of the CPD Act, more than half were not aware of learning activities under Self-Directed Learning and that nurses can earn CPD credit units through online CPD programs. More than one-third were unaware that excess CPD cannot be carried over to the next three-year period and that only completed post baccalaureate degree programs can be used to earn CPD credit units. There were no significant differences in the awareness of nurses when grouped according to sex, age, civil status, position, salary, and length of work experience. Seminars and workshops were the most common CPD activities participated by nurses in the last 12 months. Addressing the information gaps regarding the CPD law identified in this study may assist in increasing nurses’ support in the implementation of the mandatory CPD among nurses.

This paper offers a descriptive survey of RAF community psychiatry. It shows that most of the morbidity encountered in the community now served by RAF psychiatrists is at the ‘minor’ end of the psychiatric spectrum. It mostly requires supportive psychotherapy and the key worker is often the community psychiatric nurse. The study allows discussion of four related issues: the essential nature of military psychiatry; the future provision of community psychiatry to the RAF; psychiatric training and continuing professional development in the RAF; and the possibility of research.

The main objectives of this study were to identify the teachers’ perceptions and challenges of using ICT tools in the mathematics classroom at the secondary level in Kathmandu. The major tool of the study was a closed-ended questionnaire consisting of 19 items. The quantitative descriptive survey design was used in this study. The researcher selected 158 teachers by using simple random method from 261 government teachers who teach compulsory mathematics at grade X of Kathmandu district in Nepal. The standardized questionnaire was administered to the sample teachers. The SPSS-25 version database was used to analyze and interpret the collected data. Teachers’ perception of using ICTs in the mathematics classroom was positive with insignificant difference in terms of gender. There were some challenges: lack of knowledge, confidence, enough experience, training, interest and access to ICT tools, lack of technical support, lack of genuine ICT Software and unstable and unreliable internet connection at the schools. Due to these challenges, teachers did not use ICT in the classroom. Therefore, teachers should learn more to improve their knowledge and skills in ICT. The government should focus on management strategies and policies to reduce the challenges faced by teachers in mathematics classrooms. By these policies, they can use the ICT tools in the classroom.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of railway network inefficiencies on business operations of Tata chemicals Magadi, Mombasa in Kenya.Methodology: This study adopted a descriptive survey design. The target population of this study was the 450 employees of TATA Chemical Magadi Ltd. The study used a sample of 135 employees. The study employed stratified random sampling to identify the 135 respondents. The strata were those of top management, middle management/supervisors and non-managerial employees. Primary data was used to gather information by use of questionnaires. Information was sorted, coded and input into the statistical package for social sciences (SPSS 20) for production of descriptive and inferential statistics.Results: Results on the analysis of variance showed that the overall model was statistically significant and that the independent variables were good predictors of performance.  This was supported by an F statistic of 71.69 and the reported p value (0.000) which was less than the conventional probability of 0.05significance level. Descriptive results indicated that inefficiencies of Kenya Railway Corporation greatly affect production targets, customer satisfaction, sales targets and equipment utilization in Tata chemicals Magadi Ltd which in turn affects the performance of the company.Unique contribution to theory, practice and policy: The government should allocate additional annual budget to the Kenya Railways Corporation to provide efficient means of transporting freight between cities and towns. Additionally, management of Tata Chemicals Magadi Ltd should exercise stronger leadership to enhance long term planning and disaster management to avoid loss to customers and manage its efficiency.

Formative assessment plays a vital role in the delivery of quality and relevant education among learners. Data derived from the assessment results provide pieces of evidence for teachers to determine learners who need assistance, advance instructional objectives, track learners’ progress toward those standards, and identify what intervention and support are required. This descriptive-survey research examined the impact of exit slips in predicting intermediate pupils’ science achievement. Seventy-three pupils were involved in the study who were selected through a total sampling. Weighted mean, ranking, standard deviation, mean percentage score, frequency, Pearson correlation coefficient, and coefficient of determination were utilized to process and analyze statistically the data using SPSS. The findings of the study highlighted that exit slips can help learners in their learning since they reflect pupils’ understanding and increase accountability among them. The results revealed that there was a high positive association between the self-rating report and the academic performance of the respondents. The impact of self-reported rating was found significant on the performance of the pupils. Hence, when teachers took necessary and relevant remediation as well as enrichment based on the self-reported rating, academic performance may be improved. It was recommended that teachers may adapt the use of exit slips in their classes to improve academic performance among learners.
