COVID-19 and its Setback to the Educational Sector in Nigeria: The Way Forward

Globally, the world is faced with the COVID-19pandemic which has held the economy at ransom not exempting the educational sector. This pandemic has brought about recent changes and disruptions in the educational sector which serves as a catalyst for the development of any nation. Educational sector globally is seen to be shifting towards e-learning in order to cushion the effect of this pandemic. However, developing countries evidence from the Nigerian experience are posed with the challenge of shifting from the traditional teaching method to the e-learning during the pandemic. The challenges arise as a result of the varying degree of preparedness of the institutions,lack of infrastructures, and paucity of funds and policy issues in the Nigerian education sector. In a style of a qualitative research, these paper seeks to look at an overview of covid-19, global response to covid-19, impact of covid-19 on education and proffer recommendations to cushion these effect.Part of the recommendations include,government should immediately embark on the integration of all schools and institutions into online education, direct all the higher institutions to extend physical teaching and research activities to the online network, conduct teaching seminars online, jointly solve new problems that may arise in the teaching process. The government should endeavour to purchase laptops for each students both in the Basic, Secondary and Tertiary institutions, however, they should provide internet facilities in schools and constant electric supply to ease learning for students online.

The Covid-19 epidemic made the educational institutions to adopt online education systems in an attempt to continue teaching safely as well as to comply to the instructions from the government. Online education systems have been there for many years but they have gained popularity recently, more in the form of a necessity rather than a luxury. This presented a new challenge for the institutions, teachers and the students as they needed to adapt to the online teaching systems. E-learning is the outcome of development of science and technology and is different from traditional teaching in many ways. In traditional teaching the physical presence of the student and teacher at same site is a very crucial factor, while in E-learning the presence is virtual. There are two types of e-learning, synchronous and asynchronous. E-learning has many advantages as well as disadvantages, but how gracefully it gets incorporated in the traditional medical teaching, that only time will tell.

At present, Higher education sector in Egypt plays an important role. The exponential change in technology initiates improving its services. As a result of the increased pressure to improve competitiveness, and due to COVID19 circumstances, academic institutions are motivated to adopt a system perspective, elevating strategies towards achieving E-learning. This research is mainly targeting exploring practices of E-learning in higher education, its influence on enhancing the education process and in-house customers' satisfaction (students). There’s a dissimilarity between E-learning teaching and the traditional teaching, there are many debates. Creating effective E-learning environment has become a top priority for higher academic institutions. The parameters of the E-learning system effectiveness are not revealed. The main objective of this research is to find out whether the online teaching method compared to the traditional teaching method, in different colleges of the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport (AASTMT); will achieve a higher quality level than that created using the traditional education approach in specific. The research aims at exploring students’ perceptions towards E-Learning teaching method & traditional teaching method concerning learning environment satisfaction, quality of achievements and performance. The research approaches adopted in this study includes executing an experimental study using a quasi-experiment design to direct the Arab Academy for Science, Technology & Maritime transport (AASTMT) to different knowledge bases in instruction technology. Moreover, the findings from this research would provide evidence and add to the body of knowledge in higher education. The methodology of the research is seeking to apply E-learning to manage development and improve performance, as a starting point to assess the effect of applying E-learning on enhancing the education process. This research is the first in higher education in Egypt to hold a comparison between teaching methods and study the effect of this combination of dimensions together and analyze the E-Learning teaching method effect on enhancing education and improving quality. Finally, the research will elaborate the problems faced to improve the E-Learning teaching method as a prerequisite for higher education since the beginning of COVID19 pandemic.

Ethiopia has additionally been occupied with a profoundly goal-oriented exertion utilizing inquires about to adjust its advanced education framework by making joins in more straightforward help of its national procedure for monetary development and destitution decrease. This study identified the role and status of research in HEIs in Ethiopia since 2016-2018. Employing a quantitative content analysis of the quality audit reports produced based on one of the 10 quality focus areas delineated for research and outreach activities using a series of interviews, analyzed documents and visited teaching- learning resources, infrastructures and observed activities. Sampling that is availability sampling employed from all 20 (9 government and 11 non- government institutions) audited HEIs from 2016-2018. Results indicate that there are factors that are affecting research activities and output in the audited HEIs such as too much load of work given to teachers lack or shortage of budget in both government and non-government HEIs, lack of clarity in the legislation, inadequate awareness on the part of some of the academic staff that their promotion is dependent on doing researches and publishing and the likes. Furthermore, the study revealed that no clear information as to how researches are approved, and how budget is allocated in the government HEIs , inadequate research writing knowledge and skill in some young researchers and inability to launch research journals both in government and non government HEIs. Recommendations for decision and policy makers, controllers, and pioneers of advanced education establishments incorporate guaranteeing proper funds and human resource development should be in place, efficient managers and management systems, and clear research policy should be set in proper manner

<p><span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;">Chemistry is often perceived as being a dry and boring science subject, probably because of traditional teaching method, static textbook, lack of interactivity and difficulty in visualization of the abstract chemical concepts. E-learning resources (e-resources) and the utilization of technology have become one of the major trends in education, replacing the conventional textbook and traditional talk and chalk teaching method. A study was undertaken to assess students’ perceptions of the impact of the e-resources and technology on various aspects of their learning. Data were collected through a questionnaire involving 28 undergraduates, who were taking first-year Chemistry course in Taylor’s University, Malaysia. A Moodle e-Learning platform was made available to the students, where the students can assess e-resources anytime and anywhere. Innovative technologies such as mobile clicker, simulation and augmented reality (AR) were integrated into classroom instruction. Most of the students found the e-resources provided useful and well prepared them for the assessments in the course. Their understanding and ability to answer questions had improved. They were motivated to study the subject because it was more interactive and engaging. Overall findings showed that these e-resources and innovative technologies gave positive impact on students learning in chemistry.</span></span></p>

Several teaching and learning methods, alternative to the traditional method of content transmission and reception, are being proposed and discussed by researchers, aiming to improve the professionals' formation. One of the methods being applied in various educational areas and at different levels of education is the Problem Based Learning (PBL). However, there is still not much evidence about the advantages and disadvantages of applying this method in the formative process of students in postgraduate courses. Consequently, the objective of this work is to evaluate the perception of postgraduate students of a Stricto Sensu course after experiencing the PBL method in their formative disciplines. Through the application of a questionnaire, the perceptions of students who used the PBL method and the traditional teaching method, respectively, were collected in two disciplines of the Interdisciplinary Master's Degree in Sustainability, from a private university in the state of São Paulo - Brazil. The results show the feeling at the beginning and during the learning process using PBL; the perception of the PBL when compared with the traditional teaching method; and the perception of specific skills developed with the PBL. Finally, it can be said that PBL is a teaching method with broad potential in the learning process of a postgraduate course, both for the possibility of building knowledge autonomously, and for the development of specific competences and skills related to postgraduate study and research activities.

In recent years, with the flourishing of the catering economy and the trends in computer technology, restaurant operators have increasingly relied on employees with computational and information skills. Breaking through the traditional teaching method of mere lecturing, the study conducts a teaching demonstration by integrating the computational thinking concept and a Microsoft Excel computational system on the school’s E-learning platform into the teaching of a Culinary and Restaurant Management course. A non-equivalent control group pretest–posttest study with a quasi-experimental design is adopted for the assignment of experimental participants and the design of the course. The results show that a curriculum design with computational thinking significantly improves the effectiveness of students’ learning in digital technology and is especially helpful for the cultivation of the key capabilities of menu design and cost planning among restaurant management skills. The study makes the following contributions: during the Culinary and Restaurant Management course, the use of the E-learning platform and computing programs such as Microsoft Excel is associated with greater learning effectiveness than traditional teaching methods. The research results can serve as a reference for promoting an E-catering business model and a sustainable educational model in the future.

One of the most impressive uses of information and communication technology is the advent of e-learning. The current E-learning system mainly plays a role of learning assistance such as providing learning content or learning information, and sometime it provides channels or platform in the learning environment for discussion and interaction. In recent years E-learning has changed sophisticatedly in teaching method in higher education of Asian countries. The success of E-learning depends on the some circumstance like learning effectiveness, cost effectiveness, institutional commitment, access, faculty satisfaction, and student's satisfaction. Accessing has become more widely permitted through the open courseware. Open Courseware is one of the effective new types of E-learning system raised in recent years. This paper discusses the importance of e-learning system in higher education, and universal access to knowledge and information in the network and digital environment through Open Courseware. Some of the major initiatives and the targets segments covered by the online education have also been studied in this article.

The Coronavirus pandemic and thus the following lockdown has forced schools and colleges across India to temporarily shut and this unprecedented move had created a huge gap within the education bodies despite the central and the government doing their best to support e-learning and online education. Globally, the Indian Education sector is amongst the most important, with an in-depth network of quite 1.4 million schools and 993 Universities, 39931 Colleges, and 10725 Stand-Alone Institutions listed on the AISHE web portal. Because the Indian education system was mostly supported by the offline system and classes. Most of the first, and secondary schooling sectors were all supported offline education system has got to opt the web classes for empowering the education, and for the advantages of the scholars. Many faculties within the country have switched to online classes thanks to the lockdown, but one in four students is unable to connect because they don’t have a laptop, desktop, or tablet, according to a survey by economic times.

Background E-learning is the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to provide online education and learning. E- Learning has now been integrated into the traditional teaching as the concept of ‘blended learning’ that combines digital learning with the existing traditional teaching methods to address the various challenges in the field of medical education. Structured e-learning activities were started in Melaka Manipal Medical College in 2009 via e-learning platform (MOODLE-Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment).Objectives The objective of the present study is to investigate the faculty opinions toward the existing e-learning activities, and to analyse the extent of adopting and integration of e-learning into their traditional teaching methods.Methods A cross sectional study was conducted among faculties of Medicine and Dentistry using pre-tested questionnaires. The data was analyzed by using the statistical package for social science, SPSS, version 16.0.Results The result of our survey indicates that majority of our faculty (65.4%) held positive opinion towards e-learning. Among the few, who demonstrated reservations, it is attributed to their average level of skills and aptitude in the use of computers that was statistically significant (p<0.05).Conclusion Our study brings to light the need for formal training as perquisite to support e-learning that enables smooth transition of the faculty from their traditional teaching methods into blended approach. Our results are anticipated to strengthen the existing e-learning activities of our college and other universities and convincingly adopt e-learning as a viable teaching and learning strategy.Kathmandu University Medical Journal Vol.13(1) 2015; 12-18

Nowadays in higher education it is important integration of new information and communication technologies into the learning and teaching process. Fastest development of computer technologies and the Internet as a communication platform has motivated higher education institutions to start to think about integration of e-learning system on teaching and learning process on their university. E-learning is becoming progressively more important in higher education environment. Teacher is one of the most important stockholder for integration of e-learning. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the perception of teachers' attitudes towards e-learning. In this study were analyzed 49 teachers teaching in 2 major faculties in University of Tetovo, in Macedonia. The results show that a significant number of teachers agree about the plan to blend the present teaching method with e-learning, on the other hand, a great number of teachers not agree to replace traditional teaching method with e-learning. The results show that the number that prefer using traditional teaching method is the same with those that not agree.  There is no any significant correlation between teacher' attitudes towards various e-learning according to gender and faculty. Results shows that teachers' attitudes have important role towards e-learning in teaching process. These results can be a good example for creation a platform or framework for the implementation of e-learning environment in the teaching and learning process on higher education. In addition, the results of the study can serve as an important factor for the improvement and development of the educational process supported by the use of technology, thus implementing an e-learning system in order to help and facilitate the students in their studies.
