ABSTRACT Introduction This ex vivo study evaluated the accuracy of the Root-ZX electronic apex locator (EAL) (J. Morita, Tokyo, Japan) and the NovApex (Forum Technologies, Rishon Lezion, Israel) in determining the working length (WL) during endodontic treatment. Materials and methods Forty extracted single-rooted human teeth were selected for this study. The actual WL was measured with visual technique by a size #15 k-file under magnification. Then, the canal lengths were measured electronically with both Root-ZX and NovApex apex locators within ±0.5 and ±1 mm. Mean percentage of data was analyzed between groups using paired t-test, with a statistically significant level of p < 0.05. Results The accuracy of NovApex apex locator was 85% within ±0.5 mm and 92.5% within ±1 mm. The accuracy of Root-ZX apex locator was 70% within ±0.5 mm and 97.5% within ±1 mm. There was no significant difference between the accuracy of the two EALs. Conclusion Both the NovApex and Root-ZX EALs are useful for measuring the WL with high accuracy. Clinical significance Given the importance of accurate WL determination in the success of endodontic treatments, the accuracy of different apex locators should be evaluated. Background: The using of devices that emitted electromagnetic radiation has beenlimited in many healthcare centers to prevent interference with medical devices.The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of Wi-Fi Router(Tenda FH456) on working length determination using electronic apex locator(NSK-iPex II) in the presence of network connection with tablet (GT-N800) ornot.Materials and methods: Twenty-five intact teeth with a single root were sectioned atthe cementoenamel junction. Visually, roots were examined understereomicroscope (X20) and the working length was determined using a size 15K-file. The effect of Tenda Wi-Fi router on accuracy of electronic working lengthmeasurement of electronic apex locator (iPex II) was determined in this study inclosed room under 5 conditions (without router and tablet, with router in differentdistances 1 meter and 3 meters from electronic apex locator, with router andconnected with tablet in different distances 1 meter and 3 meters from electronicapex locator). The electronic working length was measured 3 times per canalunder each condition. The data were compared using analysis of variance.Results: The mean of working length measured under microscope was (13.30), andthe mean of working length by electronic apex locator was (13.14) while the meanvalues of working length in different conditions was fixed (13.12). Analysis ofvariance test (ANOVA) showed non-significant difference among working lengthmeasurements in different conditions (P-value ≥ 0.05).Conclusion: Within the limitations of the present study, stability and reliability ofiPex II apex locator in measurement of electronic working length where notinfluenced when placed in (1M, 3M) from Wi-Fi router and active Tablet(connected to network by Wi-Fi and streaming online videos). During root canaltherapy, active Tablet can be used in the dental operatory without the fear ofcausing electromagnetic interference in electronic working length determination.

AbstractThe aim of this research was to determine ex vivo the influence on accuracy of five different embedding media, for investigative and educational purposes, and one electronic apex locator. 110 human extracted mature roots of permanent single-rooted human teeth were used. The roots were embedded in alginate, stick sponge, 2% agar–agar and 6% and 12% gelatin. The actual working length to the physiological foramen was determined under a stereo-microscope (16 ×) and the electronic working lengths with the Elements Diagnostic Unit and a K-file ISO 10. The accuracy ranges of the accumulated measurements, when allowing a ± 0.5 mm tolerance, went from 98.2% (6% and 12% gelatin), 93.7% (alginate), 92.8% (2% agar–agar) to 91.7% (sponge). The exact measurements at the physiological foramen ranged from 80.0% (6% gelatin), 76.5% (2% agar–agar), 71.8% (12% gelatin), 68.2% (alginate) to 64.5% (sponge). Although relatively seldom (n = 24), measurements with deviations of more than ± 0.5 mm were also observed; thus, the accuracy of the working length determination results per se can be considered as clinically acceptable. The results of this research allow a recommendation of the investigated embedding media for electronic working length determination models for educational and research purposes in endodontics.

Aim. The purpose of this in vitro study was to assess the antimicrobial efficacy of Biopure MTAD against E. faecalis in contaminated root canals. Materials and Methods. Forty-two single rooted extracted human teeth were inoculated with E. faecalis and incubated for four weeks. The samples were divided in two control and five experimental groups irrigated with 1.5% sodium hypochlorite solution (NaOCl); 3% NaOCl; BioPure MTAD; 1.5% NaOCl/17% EDTA; or 3% NaOCl/17% EDTA. After a one-week incubation, complete disinfection was confirmed by the absence of turbidity in the incubation media. Dentin shavings were taken from samples with no turbidity to verify whether E. faecalis was present in dentin tubules. Results were analyzed statistically using Fisher's exact test, with the level of significance set at . Results. Statistical analysis of the data obtained at Day 7 and after dentin shaving analysis showed that BioPure MTAD had significantly greater antibacterial activity than 1.5% NaOCl, 1.5% NaOCl/17% EDTA and 3% NaOCl/17% EDTA. No significant difference was detected between MTAD and 3% NaOCl. Conclusions. These findings suggest that BioPure MTAD possesses superior bactericidal activity compared with NaOCl and EDTA against E. faecalis.

The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the ability of a silicon-based root canal sealer, compared to zinc oxide and eugenol and an epoxy resin-based sealers, for filling of simulated lateral canals. Thirty extracted single-rooted human teeth were selected, conventional access was made and the working length was established 1 mm from the apical foramen. Three simulated lateral canals, one in each root third (coronal, middle and apical) were prepared in both the mesial and distal surfaces of each tooth using a size 15 reamer adapted to a low-speed handpiece. Each root canal was instrumented using ProTaper rotary files up to file F3 at the working length, and then irrigated with 2.5% NaOCl followed by EDTA. The teeth were assigned to 3 groups (n=10), according to the root canal sealer: Roeko Seal (Group 1), Sealer 26 (group 2) and Grossman's sealer (Group 3). Gutta-percha cold lateral condensation technique was performed in all groups. Postoperative radiographs were taken and the images were projected for evaluation of the quality of lateral canal filling. Data were submitted to statistical analysis by Kruskal Wallis test at 5% significance level. The results showed that Grossman's sealer filled a larger number of lateral canals than Roeko Seal (p<0.05) and Sealer 26 (p<0.01). It may be concluded that Roeko Seal silicone-based root canal sealer was not as effective as the Grossman's sealer for filling of simulated lateral canals. The lateral canals localized in the apical third of the root were more difficult to be filled.

Abstract Introduction The establishment of accurate working length is one of the most critical steps in endodontic therapy from the biomechanical and obturation points of view. Traditionally, the use of radiography and tactile sense methods were used for working length estimation, but recently, the use of electronic apex locator (EAL) has come into existence. The aim was to evaluate the effect of conventional and herbal irrigants on working length determination by Root ZX. Materials and Methods A total of 110 extracted single rooted teeth were taken. Standard access cavities were prepared and samples were randomly divided into 11 groups (n = 10) according to the type of irrigating solutions used. The actual root canal length was measured, and the readings in dry conditions and wet conditions were recorded. The point where Root ZX showed beep was recorded and difference was recorded as well. The recorded data was calculated and statistically analyzed using unpaired t-test. Result In dry conditions, only saline, H2O2, Aloe vera, and green tea gave exact working length using apex locator values. Whereas in wet conditions, only Aloe vera and green tea gave exact working length. Conclusion Although the irrigants and dry conditions influenced the results, Root ZX can be considered to be accurate, and the difference was within the clinically acceptable range and not statistically significant.

Present study was conducted to evaluate the accuracy of Electronic Apex Locator to measure the root canal length in presence of blood, an unavoidable event during extirpation of vital pulp. A number of sixty (60) previously untreated extracted human maxillary and mandibular permanent mature anterior teeth having more or less straight roots with single root canal were included in the study. Root canal lengths were measured using a no. 15 k-file (Mani Inc, Tokyo Japan) in all the teeth until it was just visible through apical foramen that was confirmed by viewing them in Stereomicroscope. The measurements obtained by the Stereomicroscope of all teeth were consider as the ‘Gold standard' and was also consider as the actual length of those teeth. Using an Electronic Apex locator (Foramatron D 10, Percell, USA) was used to measure the canal length of the same sixty teeth introducing human blood into the canal. Now the measurements taken by Electronic Apex locator (EAL) in presence of blood were compared with the actual length taken by the stereomicroscope and difference in the error length compared with stereomicroscopic length were calculated in a range from -0.5mm to >1 mm. The objective of this in vitro study was to assess and compare the shear bond strength of conventional and modified orthodontic tubes bonded to the surface of dry and saliva-contaminated enamel. The sample consisted of 40 human teeth, which were randomly divided into four groups according to attachment base and presence or absence of saliva contamination as follows: Group CB, conventional orthodontic tubes without salivary contamination; Group CB-S, conventional orthodontic tubes with salivary contamination; Groups BM, orthodontic tubes modified by welding a metal mesh to their base without salivary contamination; and Group BM-S, modified orthodontic tubes with salivary contamination. Shear bond strength test was performed in a universal testing machine and analysis of the adhesive remnant index (ARI) by optical microscopy. Two-way ANOVA was used, followed by Tukey’s test at a statistical significance level of 5%. The ARI results were analysed descriptively. There was statistically significant difference between the groups regarding the shear bond strength values, with conventional tubes presenting significantly higher values (P < 0.05). In addition, the presence of salivary contamination interfered negatively with the behaviour of conventional tubes only (P < 0.05). Shear bond strength was not improved by increasing the area of the orthodontic tubes. Moreover, salivary contamination influenced negatively the SBS values, but only when conventional tubes were used.

ABSTRACTObjectives: The purpose of this study was to compare in-vitro the amount of debris extruded apically from extracted teeth, using K3, Protaper rotary instruments and manual step-back technique.Methods: Forty five human single-rooted mandibular premolar teeth were randomly divided into 3 groups. The teeth in 3 groups were instrumented until reaching the working length with K3, Protaper rotary instruments and K-type stainless steel instruments with manual step-back technique, respectively. Debris extruded from the apical foramen was collected into centrifuge tubes and the amount was determined. The data obtained were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis one-way analysis of variance and Mann-Whitney U tests, with P=.05 as the level for statistical significance.Results: Statistically significant difference was observed between K3, Protaper and step-back groups in terms of debris extrusion (P<.05). Step-back group had the highest mean debris weight, which was significantly different from the K3 and Protaper groups (P<.05). The lowest mean debris weight was related to K3 group, which was significantly different from the Protaper group (P<.05).Conclusions: Based on the results, all instrumentation techniques produced debris extrusion. The engine-driven Ni-Ti systems extruded significantly less apical debris than step-back technique. However, Protaper rotary instruments extruded significantly more debris than K3 rotary instruments. The aim of this study was to evaluate the apical microleakage of Biodentine and MTA orthograde apical plugs and to compare the effect of thickness of these biomaterials on their sealing ability. A total of eighty maxillary anterior teeth were used. The apices were removed by cutting with a diamond disc (Jota, Germany) 2 mm from the apical root end in an attempt to standardize the working length of all specimens to 15 ± 1 mm. Both materials were placed in 1–4 mm thickness as apical plugs root canal. Root canal leakage was evaluated by the fluid filtration technique. One-way ANOVA was used in order to determine normality of dispersal distribution of parameters; thereafter, results were analyzed by Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. Overall, between microleakage values of MTA and Biodentine regardless of apical plug thickness, no difference was observed. In terms of plug thickness, a statistically significant difference was observed between the subgroups of MTA and Biodentine (p<0.05). The apical sealing ability of Biodentine was comparable to MTA at any apical plug thickness.
