Physiological stress measures at work: relevance, limitations, and findings Physiological stress measures at work: relevance, limitations, and findings L. van Doornen & J. Houtveen, Gedrag & Organisatie, volume 22, September 2009, nr. 3, pp. 275-293 Physiological stress measures should only to a limited extent be considered as 'objective' indices of subjectively experienced work stress. Their contribution should mainly be sought in the quantification of the load on the body exerted by stress, the latter being the mediator of the health effects of work stress. For the most widely used physiological parameters in the field of work stress – blood pressure, heart rate, cardiac autonomic indices, adrenalin and cortisol – their physiology is described, their measurement techniques outlined, and an overall picture furnished with respect to differences observed between high- and low-work stress populations. Finally some suggestions are given with respect to future directions this field may take: focus on individual differences in physiological stress-sensitivity; quantification of recovery, and quantification of the effects of individual or workplace interventions.

1. Changes in blood pressure in the dorsal aorta, ventral aorta and subintestinal vein, as well as changes in heart rate and breathing rate during moderate swimming activity in the rainbow trout are reported. 2. Blood pressures both afferent and efferent to the gills increased during swimming and then returned to normal levels within 30 min. after exercise. 3. Venous blood pressure was characterized by periodic increases during swimming. The pressure changes were not in phase with the body movements. 4. Although total venous return to the heart increased during swimming, a decreased blood flow was recorded in the subintestinal vein. 5. Heart rate and breathing rate increased during swimming and then decreased when swimming ceased. 6. Some possible mechanisms regulating heart and breathing rates are discussed.

Physiologist Claude Bernard lived in a time when very little was known about the mechanisms underlying physiologic findings, and he had ample access to clues garnered from observing machines. Let's consider homeostasis (a concept championed by Bernard), an example for which an engineered machine shed light on a fundamental principle of physiology. Homeostasis is simply the tendency of the body to maintain important physiologic variables (eg, heart rate, blood pressure, PACO2) at constant, preset values. An example is a simplified mechanical governor that could be used to regulate the rotational speed of a steam engine shaft. ‘Autoregulate’ might be a more apt word because the governor performs without external help or guidance, provided it is designed and built properly. It doesn't take much imagination to see an analogy between the mechanical governor and the autonomic nervous system. Both maintain specific variables at a constant set point through a process of feedback loops.

Women with pregnancies complicated by preeclampsia appear to be at increased risk of metabolic and vascular diseases in later life. Previous research has also indicated disturbed cardiorespiratory adaptation during pregnancy. The aim of this study was to follow up on the physiological stress response in preeclampsia several weeks postpartum. A standardized laboratory test was used to illustrate potential deviations in the physiological stress responding to mildly stressful events of the kind and intensity in which they regularly occur in further everyday life after pregnancy. Fifteen to seventeen weeks postpartum, 35 women previously affected by preeclampsia (19 mild, 16 severe preeclampsia), 38 women after uncomplicated pregnancies, and 51 age-matched healthy controls were exposed to a self-relevant stressor in a standardized stress-reactivity protocol. Reactivity of blood pressure, heart rate, stroke index, and systemic vascular resistance index as well as baroreceptor sensitivity were analyzed. In addition, the mutual adjustment of blood pressure, heart rate, and respiration, partitioned for influences of the sympathetic and the parasympathetic branches of the autonomic nervous system, were quantified by determining their phase synchronization. Findings indicated moderately elevated blood pressure levels in the nonpathological range, reduced stroke volume, and elevated systemic vascular resistance in women previously affected by preeclampsia. Despite these moderate abnormalities, at the time of testing, women with previous preeclampsia did not differ from the other groups in their physiological response patterns to acute stress. Furthermore, no differences between early, preterm, and term preeclampsia or mild and severe preeclampsia were observed at the time of testing. The findings suggest that the overall cardiovascular responses to moderate stressors return to normal in women who experience a pregnancy with preeclampsia a few weeks after delivery, while the operating point of the arterial baroreflex is readjusted to a higher pressure. Yet, their regulation mechanisms may remain different.

Modern games consists of digital gaming consoles that involves interaction with a user and has an interface to generate visual feedback through 2D/3D monitor. These games have several psychological side effects like loss of spatial awareness, back pains, insomnia, addiction, aggression, stress, and hypertension. Virtual reality (VR) Gaming is one of the most emerging and novel technologies in the field of entertainment. Evaluation of this new technology has become important in order to analyze the effects of its predecessors (2D and 3D gaming). The main focus of this paper is on detection of stress levels in individuals due to VR gaming and classify them depending on their sympathetic and parasympathetic dominance. The physiological signal variation is analyzed by performing Heart Rate Variability (HRV) analysis over ECG signals which is one of the fast emerging methods in non-invasive research and clinical tools for assessing autonomic nervous system function (Juan Sztajzel, 2004. Pulse-transmissiontime-variability (PTTV), which is extracted, has high coherence with heart rate variability and is also used as an objective measure of stress. In this paper we obtain the response of an individual during VR gaming and correlate them with the HRV/PTT parameters. The game chosen for the data acquisition was ‘VR city view rope crossing-360 android VR,’ during which data recording is done. It was found that there was a quantitative increase in physiological stress when individuals were exposed to virtual high heights in comparison with time relative to unaltered viewing. Mean Heart rate showed a significant increase during gaming for both boys and girls which indicates that the body is under the influence of a sympathetic activity like a physical exercise.

PurposeTo add to the existing body of knowledge on the relationship between stress and job performance in policing, we monitored police officers' physiology using Hexoskin shirts while they responded to simulated scenarios.Design/methodology/approachWe employed mixed repeated measures (baseline, intervention, post-intervention), between groups (treatment vs control group) design. Using this approach, our aims were (1) to determine whether an individualized physiological stress profile—a combination of heart rate (HR), heart rate variability (HRV), sympathetic nervous system (SNS) index and parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) index—could be developed for each participant; (2) to investigate the association between physiological stress and scenario performance and (3) to pilot test an intervention for decreasing physiological stress in real time.FindingsWe found that it was possible to individualize physiological stress profiles for each participant that alerted us when the participant was becoming stressed. We also found that physiological stress was significantly and negatively/inversely associated with scenario performance. However, our intervention to try and decrease participants' stress in real time was not successful. Several key lessons can be taken from our attempt that could inform future efforts in this area.Research limitations/implicationsThis was a small pilot study, precluding generalizability of results. Furthermore, our intervention was simplistic and potentially affected by an experimenter effect. Future research should explore better ways to intervene when officers are becoming physiologically stressed to help them overcome stress in real time and safeguard against the cumulative effects of stress on health and performance.Originality/valueThis research adds to the body of knowledge on physiological stress and job-task performance in police officers.

Introduction.Rennin-angiotensin system and salt diet play important roles in blood pressure control. We hypothesized that the high-salt intake during pregnancy influences the degree of angiotensin-dependent control of the blood pressure in adult offspring.Methods.Female Wistar rats in two groups (A and B) were subjected to drink tap and salt water, respectively, during pregnancy. The offspring were divided into four groups as male and female offspring from group A (groups 1 and 2) and from group B (groups 3 and 4). In anesthetized matured offspring mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate and urine output were measured in response to angiotensin II (AngII) (0-1000 ng/kg/min, iv) infusion.Results.An increase in MAP was detected in mothers with salt drinking water (P<0.05). The body weight increased and kidney weight decreased significantly in male offspring from group 3 in comparison to group 1 (P<0.05). MAP and urine volume in response to AngII infusion increased in group 3 (P<0.05). These findings were not observed in female rats.Conclusion.Salt overloading during pregnancy had long-term effects on kidney weight and increased sex-dependent response to AngII infusion in offspring (adult) that may reveal the important role of diet during pregnancy in AngII receptors.

Dorsal aortic blood pressure, heart rate, and oral water pressure were recorded in adult sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) while they were resting in darkened aquaria or swimming in an illuminated tunnel-respirometer. Pressures were recorded on an oscillograph attached to pressure transducers connected with cannulae in the dorsal aorta and oral cavity. The velocity of the water in the swimming chamber was increased in stepwise fashion every 30 min until the fish stopped swimming and were swept against an electrified grid. At the cessation of swimming, which was considered as the onset of fatigue, water velocity was decreased to a minimum which permitted the fish to rest and dorsal aortic blood pressure, heart rate, and oral water pressure were recorded for about 1 hr as they returned toward resting levels. Resting values were 44/38 mm Hg (systolic/diastolic) and 49 heartbeats/min. At maximal swimming speed dorsal aortic blood pressure was 55/49 mm Hg and heart rate was 83 beats/min. No abrupt changes in cardiovascular function occurred at the onset of fatigue.A number of morphological (length and weights of the body and ventricle) and cardiovascular (pressures, rates) variables were measured in six adult sockeye salmon. A significant correlation was found between hematocrit, ventricle weight, and heart rate; a change in one apparently caused adjustments in the other two in order to maintain a constant supply of oxygen to the tissues during subfatigue levels of activity.The effects of removal and replacement of blood or isotanic saline in the dorsal aorta were observed in three adult sockeye salmon. Removal of blood produced a proportionate decrease in blood pressure and an increase in heart rate. Neither dilution of the blood by replacement with saline nor increase in blood volume from addition of saline had any significant effect on heart rate and blood pressure.

Five-finger hypnosis is a movement that tightens and relaxes the muscles in one part of the body at one time which can present a relaxed condition physically and psychologically, by thinking of a pleasant experience (Keliat, 2011). Useful for giving inner peace to individuals. reduce anxiety, worry and anxiety, reduce tension and reduce blood pressure, lower heart rate and sleep soundly. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of five-finger hypnosis therapy against anxiety hypertension clients at Putri Ayu Health Center, Jambi City. Quasi experimental design pre-post test with without control. The sample was 33 people with a total sampling technique. The results showed that there was an effect of five-finger hypnosis therapy on anxiety in hypertensive clients (p value <0.05). There was a decrease in anxiety after five finger hypnosis therapy was carried out. Five finger hypnosis therapy is recommended to be applied as nursing therapy in treating hypertensive clients with anxiety.

Aims. To study of the polymorphisms of the TPN2 and GNB3 genes in obese patients and their effect on weight loss in patients on sibutramine therapy. Materials and methods. The research study included 118 patients with exogenous-constitutional obesity who received Reduxin (sibutramine + CMC) at the dose of 10 mg. Term follow-up was 3 months. A genetic study was performed to assess ТРН2 and GNB3 gene polymorphisms. The response to the therapy was evaluated after 3 months by the dynamics of body weight. Results. In the study the G703T polymorphism of the GNB3 gene showed that during 3 months of observation, carriers of the TT genotype had a greater decrease in body weight in comparison with carriers of the allele C -8 kg (-12; -5) vs. -5 kg (-8; -3), p = 0.018. In carriers of different variants of the genotype of the TPH2 gene (polymorphism C825T), there was no difference in body weight dynamics with sibutramine therapy. There was no correlation between the foresaid polymorphisms of the TPH2 and GNB3 genes with the indices of blood pressure and heart rate. Conclusions. 1. The result of sibutramin therapy may depend on genetic factors: in carriers of the TT-genotype C825T of the GNB3 gene the body weight loss was higher than among the carriers of the C allele. 2. Changes in blood pressure and heart rate did not show any statistically significant relationship with polymorphisms of the TPH2 and GNB3 genes.

Resumo Objetivo: Avaliar os efeitos do treinamento de força sobre as hipertrofias renal e cardíaca induzida pela hipertensão renovascular em ratos. Método: Dezoito ratos Wistar foram divididos em três grupos: Sham, hipertenso (2K1C) e hipertenso treinado (2K1C-TR). Os animais foram induzidos a hipertensão renovascular através da ligadura da artéria renal esquerda. O treinamento de força foi iniciado quatro semanas após a indução da hipertensão renovascular, teve duração de 12 semanas e foi realizado a 70% de uma repetição máxima. Ao final foi medida pressão arterial, frequência cardíaca e parâmetros das hipertrofias renal e cardíaca. Resultados: O treinamento de força promoveu a redução da frequência cardíaca (p=0.0025) e da pressão arterial (p=0.01). Além disso, o treinamento diminuiu as massas absolutas do rim (p=0.0001) e coração (p=0.006), e os índices de hipertrofias renal e cardíaca, tanto normalizado pela massa corporal dos animais (p=0.0001 e p=0.001, respectivamente) como normalizado pelo comprimento da tíbia (p=0.004 e p=0.0004, respectivamente). Conclusão: O treinamento de força tem efeitos benéficos na hipertensão renovascular em animais, sendo capaz de reduzir a pressão arterial e a frequência cardíaca, além de atenuar o desenvolvimento das hipertrofias renal e cardíaca em ratos com hipertensão renovascular. Abstract Objective: To evaluate the effects of strength training on renal and cardiac hypertrophy induced by the renovascular hypertension in rats. Method: Eighteen male rats were divided into three groups: sham, hypertensive (2K1C) and trained hypertensive (2K1C-TR). The animals were induced to renovascular hypertension through ligation of the left renal artery. Strength training was initiated four weeks after the induction of renovascular hypertension, had the duration of 12 weeks and was performed at 70% of one maximum repetition. At the end, it was measured blood pressure, heart rate and parameters of renal and cardiac hypertrophies. Results: Strength training promoted reduction in heart rate (p=0.0025) and blood pressure (p=0.01). In addition, training decreased the absolute masses of the kidney (p=0.0001) and heart (p=0.006), and the indexes of renal and cardiac hypertrophy, both normalized by the body mass of the animals (p=0.0001 e p=0.001, respectively) and by the length of the tibia (p=0.004 e p=0.0004, respectively). Conclusion: Strength training has beneficial effects on renovascular hypertension in animals, being able to reduce blood pressure and heart rate, attenuating the development of renal and cardiac hypertrophies in rats with renovascular hypertension.
