Looking at the higher learning institutions, there is no question that the current methods for paying student fees are inefficient, inconvenient, and wasteful of time. In addition, the rise in the number of students studying in higher learning institutions has led to long frustrating queues and overcrowding in most financial institutions during payment of student fees. This paper sought to design and implement a secure block chain-based payment system for higher learning institutions in developing countries. Students are to use the proposed payment system to pay tuition fees and other student fees to their respective higher educational institution. In addition, students are to use the proposed payment to pay for goods and services provided by the institution and other merchants in the institution’s premises. In this study, object oriented software development methodology was used to implement the proposed payment system. The proposed system consists of a mobile e-wallet, RESTful API, and blockchain as the core component of the API.

This qualitative research was an attempt to study the extent of applicability of academic freedom in Philippine education in terms of its concept and development. The term has been defined as the freedom of the teacher or research worker in higher institutions of learning to investigate and discuss the problems of his science and to express his conclusions through publication or in the instructions of the students. Political or ecclesiastical authorities or administrative officials of the institution are barred from interfering with this right of the teacher unless the same is contrary to professional ethics. Academic freedom is exclusively the domain of academic community. Academic freedom may be viewed from two standpoints such as the point of view of the educational institution and the point of view of the members of the academe. The first point of view speaks of the freedom of the institution to determine the qualification of its teachers, the course of study and admission policies. From the standpoint of the members of the academe, academic freedom is the freedom of the teacher or research workers in institutions of higher learning to investigate and discuss the problems of his science and to express his conclusions either through publications or in instructions of the students, without interference from political or ecclesiastical authority, or from administrative officials of the institution.

For the past few decades, because of the environmental hazards, green purchase has been subject to wide ranges of studies. Subsequently, understanding the intellectual structure of the green purchase behaviour is increasingly becoming important. As we progress towards globalisation, environmental issue in the form of climate change such as increasing temperature, increasing sea level and decreasing land ice sheets continues to create apprehensions among the global communities. One of the primary reasons contributing to such situation is the purchase of high carbon products and services by the consumers. However, in recent years, global consumers have been placing greater focus on the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which are associated with responsible consumption and production as well as climate action. As such, producers and suppliers are motivated to accentuate on the production of goods and services that are environmentally friendly to cater to the increasing green purchase behaviour. Green purchase behaviour refers to the acquisition of products and services that are environmentally friendly, causing minimal damage to the ecosystem (Ritter et al., 2015). National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), an autonomous institution of University Grant Commission (UGC), it has been merely 26 years since the inception of NAAC, whose Accreditation to Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in India is mandatory likewise only a NAAC Accredited higher learning institutions are eligible for UGC and other various grants. Moreover, NAAC accreditation determines the quality of the institute in terms of education, infrastructure, research, teaching & learning, etc.NAAC Accreditation helps a learning institution to know its strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities through the various review process, likewise in initiating modern pedagogical methods and in receiving grants from the Government’s various bodies. Importantly, it helps students to know details of the educational institution in terms of infrastructure, quality of education, research output, etc. Therein, NAAC Accreditation is indispensable to HEIs in India, and this paper, the prime focus of research has been to unravel the revised NAAC Grading Pattern because, in the end, a ‘Grade’ determines the quality of an institution.

Suicide is one of the top causes of death worldwide among youth aged 15-29 years. Students of higher institutions are also involved in the specific group that was reported to have a high level of suicidal ideation. Thus, in order to overcome this issue, all factors that influence suicidal ideation should be identified. This study is intended to identify the factor that influences suicidal ideation among higher learning education students based on their perceptions This study was conducted using a qualitative method using semi-structured interview questions to explore participants’ perceptions towards suicidal ideation among students of higher learning institutions. Two focus group discussions were chosen as the method for data collection. The data in this study were analyzed using thematic analysis method. Specifically, data analysis uses thematic analysis based on six simple steps introduced by Braun and Clarke (2006). The findings show that the participants have an understanding of suicidal ideation. Factors identified to influence the existence of suicidal ideation among students of higher learning institutions can be categorized into two categories, external factors, and internal factors. These factors are peer pressure, pressure from society, social media influences, family factors, financial factors, intrapersonal and individual interpersonal factors, and low self-esteem factor. This study also found that many participants agreed that person internal factors are the most dominant factors affecting suicidal ideation. This study also found that counsellors and other professional bodies such as psychologists were not the choices of participants to express a problem that led to their suicidal ideation.  Keyword: Suicidal ideation, student

The study sought to establish the influence of educational strategies on online learning in Kenyan institutions of higher learning amid COVID 19 Pandemic. Higher learning institutions, like every other educational institution were forced to close down to curb the spread of covid-19. As centers of innovation across the world, universities were expected to come up with solutions. Higher learning institutions in Kenya embraced online learning. Naturally, there were concerns as to whether such institutions can handle such a massive transformation seemingly overnight. These institutions had to initiate online lectures as well as exams in some cases in order to continue with a school calendar that had already suffered greatly as a result of the covid-19 pandemic. The transition has not been perfect and has faced a number of challenges. The paper used a desk study review methodology where relevant empirical literature was reviewed to identify main themes. A critical review of empirical literature was conducted to establish the influence of educational strategies on online learning in institutions of higher learning in Kenya. The study concludes that the educational strategies have a positive influence on online learning and can be applied individually or collectively depending on the circumstances. The study recommends that institutions of higher learning in Kenya should apply cooperative learning activities in online learning. The study also recommends that institutions should also use differentiation strategy so as to use different techniques for different students and that institutions of higher learning apply the behavioral approach technique by encouraging good behaviors by praise and motivation. PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to provide an analysis of ways in which teaching, learning and research can be demystified in higher institutions of learning (HILs). Over the last decade, HILs around the world have faced various transformations to adapt to new opportunities for knowledge dissemination and utilization. Many benefits are gained from implementation of the platform including visibility, status and increased reputation. Despite the high uptake of institutional repositories (IRs) to guide teaching, learning and research of higher institutions learning's digital resources more effectively, little has been written on how IRs can be used for effective teaching, learning and research in higher institutions of learning.Design/methodology/approachUsing analytical method, this paper analysed and presented various thematical issues on IRs in relation to its efficacy, while proposing solutions for its sustainability.FindingsThe paper found that most universities have embraced IRs as an option for increasing their visibility, status and researchers' relevance in the knowledge world. It is the conclusion of the study that IRs are currently recognized as an essential infrastructure to respond to the higher institutions of learning challenges in the digital world.Practical implicationsThis paper provides higher institutions of learning an opportunity to prepare their IRs to demystify teaching, learning and research. Since IRs will make it possible to access variety of information at any time whenever required.Social implicationsKnowledge accessibility and utilization bring about social change in the society.Originality/valueLittle has been documented on how IRs can be used for effective teaching, teaching, learning and research in HILs. This paper provides an analysis of ways in which teaching, learning and research can be demystified in these institutions. Thus, it contributes new knowledge on demystifying teaching, learning and research through IRs in HILs.

Only 23% of Malaysian workforce has tertiary education compared to Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development countries such as Singapore and Finland that have tertiary education with an average of 28% and around 35%, respectively. This study investigates perceived needs lifelong learning programmes for professionalisation among the workers. A survey was conducted on workers from the industries. Most of the workers felt that lifelong learning programmes provide personal satisfaction. In terms of perceived needs, workers from higher positions in industries need lifelong learning programmes to get better positions and better salaries as compared to those with lower positions in industries to get better job and education. Both groups have different preferences for means of learning whether face-to-face or online learning. The implications are that the government has to change their policy in terms of requirement for these companies to register with the Human Resource Department Fund so that their workers be subsidised for attending lifelong learning programmes and to encourage the participation of public higher learning institutions for providing online and weekend lifelong learning programmes to the workers.
