This study was undertaken to determine the reproductive performance of the endangered Bos-taurus Namshi breed of Cameroon. Ovarian response to superovulatory treatment was also evaluated. The following observations were recorded. The average calf mortality rate was 25.71% while the average birth weight was 12.22±0.82kg. The percentage of animals in oestrus during the wet and dry season was respectively 60% and 33.4%. The oestrus cycle length and the oestrus duration were respectively 20.80±1.20d and 7.00±0.80h: corresponding dry season figures for those parameters were 19.00±0.94d and 6.00±0.7h respectively. In the dry season the manifestation of oestrus was 80º during the day and 20º at night while in the wet season it was 55.55% and 44.5% respectively. Postpartum oestrus was at 18 months. The ovarian response to superovulatory treatment was about 6.40±2.50 ovulations per cow. Results indicate that the scarcity of Bos-taurus Namshi breed in Camerron could be attributed to high calf mortality rate, low calving rate and long postpartum periods. Embryo transfer could be a way to rapidly multiply this breed.

Objective: The present study aimed to survey seasonal changes in reproductive performance of local cows receiving artificial insemination (AI) in the Pursat province of Cambodia, a tropical country, to investigate if ambient conditions affect the reproductive performance of cows as to better understand the major problems regarding cattle production.Methods: The number of cows receiving AI, resultant number of calving, and calving rate were analyzed for those receiving the first AI from 2016 to 2017. The year was divided into three seasons: cool/dry (from November to February), hot/dry (from March to June), and wet (from July to October), based on the maximal temperature and rainfall in Pursat, to analyze the relationship between ambient conditions and the reproductive performance of cows. Body condition scores (BCS) and feeding schemes were also analyzed in these seasons.Results: The number of cows receiving AI was significantly higher in the cool/dry season than the wet season. The number of calving and calving rate were significantly higher in cows receiving AI in the cool/dry season compared with the hot/dry and wet seasons. The cows showed higher BCSs in the cool/dry season compared to the hot/dry and wet seasons probably due to the seasonal changes in the feeding schemes: these cows grazed on wild grasses in the cool/dry season but fed with a limited amount of grasses and straw in the hot/dry and wet seasons.Conclusion: The present study suggests that the low number of cows receiving AI, low number of calving, and low calving rate could be mainly due to poor body condition as a result of the poor feeding schemes during the hot/dry and wet seasons. The improvement of body condition by the refinement of feeding schemes may contribute to an increase in the reproductive performance in cows during the hot/dry and wet seasons in Cambodia.

Observations were made over a period of three years on a total of 336 West African Dwarf (WAD) ewes that were mated to four rams in rotation. Out of a total of 753 lambs obtained, 459 (61%) were produced in the wet season as compared to 294 (39%) produced in the dry season. More lambs were produced as a result of multiple birth (twins and triplets) in the wet than in the dry season. Consequently, the average birth weight of the wet season lambs (1.58kg) was lower than the average birth weight (1.66 kg) of the dry season lambs. Despite this initial disadvantage, the wet season lambs had a higher average weaning weight (9.11 kg) than the dry season lambs (7.83 kg). The effects of season on pre weaning lamb mortality was minimal while the effects of type of birth were quite apparent. Lowest pre-weaning lamb mortality values were recorded for single lambs, followed by twins and triplets, in ascending order. The data also showed that a slightly higher proportion of the male lambs reached weaning age than female lambs. This observation could be associated with reported inverse relationship between lamb birth weight and mortality found in literature.

Reproductive data from 24 does (Chinchilla X New Zealand White) of twenty weeks, were analyzed to determine the effect of generation, housing systems and season on the reproductive performance of rabbits raised in the humid tropics. The experiment was carried out during four seasons namely: early dry season (EDS-September to November), late dry season (LDS-December to February), early rainy season (ERS-March to May) and late rainy season (LRS-June to August). The study was repeated in the second generation and the data obtained were subjected to analysis of variance in a 2x2x4 factorial arrangement. Factors considered were generations, housing systems, and seasons respectively. Highest breeding efficiency of 83.33% was obtained in the first generation and maximum litter size at birth (35) and weaning (28) were observed in caged-does that kindled in EDS of first and second generations respectively, while does housed on deep litter system produced the smallest litter size at birth (24) and weaning (18) in the ERS of the second generation. Highest (12) and least (4) pre-weaning losses were recorded in caged-does that kindled in ERS of the first and second generation respectively, whereas highest average birth weight (120.58g) was observed in litters of deep litter-does that kindled in EDS of the second generation. These results indicated that the production of rabbits for breeding purposes is better achieved during early dry season (September-November) and also revealed that deep litter system allows satisfactory performance and has comparative advantage over wooden cage system considering the reduction in housing cost and can be used to improve the nutritional status of the family and also to obtain some supplementary income.

Ninety young Merino ewes, depastured on Mitchell (Astrebla spp.) grass pastures in North West Queensland, were used in a hormonal growth promotant implantation study. The ewes were given 1 implant of Compudose, Ralgro, Revalor or Synovex-H, either at lamb marking (mid-dry season) or the start of the following summer wet season, which was ~180 days post-marking. The hormonal growth promotant implanted groups had greater (P<0.05) liveweights than the control group early in the trial (days 22 and 57) and also from the end of the period of activity of the wet season implant (day 277) until the middle of the dry season (day 412). Dry season (at lamb marking) implantation did not improve average daily gain. From the end of the wet season onwards, ewes with a wet season implant were heavier (P<0.05) than those ewes implanted at lamb marking. This liveweight advantage had diminished by the start of the autumn mating. Hormonal growth promotant implantation had a favourable (P<0.05) effect on growth rate, but adversely affected reproduction in the ewes, regardless of time of implantation. Implantation with Compudose or Synovex-H significantly (P<0.001) reduced the demonstration of oestrus, while Revalor or Synovex-H reduced pregnancy rates by up to 100%. Despite Ralgro reducing these variables by up to 25%, its effect was not significant. All ewes that were diagnosed as pregnant at 140 days later produced lambs. It was concluded from this study that hormonal growth promotant implantation at lamb marking provides no later-life advantage, while wet season implantation provides a growth or liveweight advantage to young Merino ewes and this persists for a long period after implantation. Despite the lack of an effect of Ralgro on oestrus and pregnancy results, however, implantation of young breeding ewes of any age should not be carried out, due to the long term and negative effects on reproductive performance. Wet season implantation may be best used for animals intended for slaughter.

The reproductive performance of cows and growth rate of their calves to weaning was examined over a four-year period (1973-1977). Cows grazed either native pasture stocked at 1cowl4 ha, or native pasture oversown with Townsville stylo (Stylosanthes humilis) and fertilized with superphosphate stocked at 1 cow/2 ha. Animals were supplemented on each pasture type with urea-molasses in the dry season, phosphorus all year round plus urea-molasses in the dry season, or were unsupplemented. Mating was for three months from mid-January. Calving began towards the end of the dry season and cows lactated through the following wet season. Cows grazing fertilized legume pasture had significantly higher conception rates and earlier calving dates in one year only. In all years, foetal and calf losses between pregnancy diagnosis and weaning were lower on native pasture than on fertilized legume pasture. Cows grazing fertilized legume pasture were generally in better body condition and heavier throughout and their calves grew faster to weaning than on native pasture. Fertilized legume pasture produced a 2.4 fold increase over that of native pasture in cow and calf liveweight per unit area (382.7 kg/ha vs 159.8 kg/ha) over the four years. Supplementation did not influence liveweight or reproductive performance of cows or calf growth rate except during the final dry season when non-supplemented cows lost significantly more weight than those supplemented with phosphorus and urea.

A study was made over a four year period ( 1970-1 973) on the reproductive performance of cows grazing either native pasture stocked at 1 breeder 4.9 ha-1 or native pasture oversown with Townsville stylo (Stylosanthes humilis) and fertilized with superphosphate, stocked at 1 breeder 2.4 ha-1. Animals were supplemented on each pasture type with combinations of molasses, urea and phosphorus at various times of the year. Mating from September 1 to January 31 resulted in animals lactating during the dry season. At double the stocking rate, lactating cows on fertilized pastures had similar conception rates to those on native pasture. During a prolonged dry season, lactating cows on fertilized pasture had twice the conception rate and fewer required survival feeding. Urea compared with non-urea based supplements produced significant increases in conception rates of cows grazing native pasture especially during a dry year. Calves were born earlier, had shorter intercalving intervals and fewer cows had to be fed a survival ration when urea was available. On fertilized pasture, urea based supplements caused only a marginal increase in conception rate except in a dry year, when there was a significant increase. Over the four years, there was a diminishing response in the conception rate of lactating cows grazing native pasture and supplemented with phosphorus during the wet season compared with the control. On fertilized pasture, there was a variable but non-significant response. The addition of phosphorus either as a wet or dry season supplement to urea caused variable responses on each pasture type, but none differed significantly from that of urea.

ABSTRACTEstimates of dam reproductive performance are reported for purebred Africander, Angoni, Barotse and Boran dams, and the reciprocal crossbreds of the latter three breeds, under ranching conditions in Zambia.Mean performances based on a maximum of 1996 records collected over six parities were: calving rate, 65·6%; weaning rate, 62·8%; calf birth weight, 26·6kg; calf weaning weight, 163·6kg; and dam live weight at weaning, 363 0 kg.Purebred Africander and Barotse dams had significantly poorer calving rates, 542 and 57·6% respectively, than the purebred dams of the Angoni and Boran breeds, 69·1 and 66·0% respectively. Reciprocal crossbred dams of the latter two breeds had the highest calving rates, 71·2 and 74·4%. Heterosis estimates for calving rate were 0·8% for Angoni/Barotse crosses, 7·8% for Angoni/Boran crosses and 10·3% for Barotse/Boran crosses and, for weaning rate, 3·7, 6·7 and 11·5% respectively. There were no differences between reciprocal crossbred dams for calving and weaning percentages. The mortality rate of calves born to crossbred dams was 40% and that of the calves born to purebred dams of the same breeds 4·7%. Dam status at mating had an important effect on fertility with the calving rate of dams dry at mating, 89·1%, contrasting with a rate of 39·8% for those dams that were lactating at mating and that had calved late in the season.There were large differences between breeds for calf weights but heterosis estimates were small and nonsignificant. There were no differences between the progeny weights of reciprocal crossbred dams. Sex, date and period of birth, and dam status had significant effects on calf weights.Africander dams had the heaviest, and Angoni dams the lightest, live weights at weaning, 421·1 and 320·7 kg respectively. Heterosis estimates for dam live weights were small and non-significant, and reciprocal crossbred differences were unimportant. Dams which lost most live weight during the dry season, that had extremely light live weights at the beginning of the breeding season or that gained little weight during the breeding season had significantly poorer fertility than other dams.Overall estimates of heritability derived by dam/daughter regression were 0·20 for calving percentage, 0·76 for calf birth weight and 0·72 for calf weaning weight.

Oestrus patterns and serum progesterone profiles of 10 adult and 10 yearling Yankasa ewes were investigated in the late hot-dry and late-wet seasons in the subhumid tropical climate of Zaria, Nigeria. The proportions of ewes which came on heat once, twice or thrice within the experimental periods in the late hot-dry and late-wet seasons were 25, 15 and 0%, and 5, 10 and 85% respectively, while mean oestrous cycle length was significantly longer (P<0.001) in the hot-dry season than in the late-wet season (30.9 vs 18.4 days) due to the higher incidence of anoestrus in the former. However, the mean duration of oestrus was not affected by season. Mean serum progesterone levels were significantly (P<0.05) higher in the late-wet season than in the late hot-dry season (1.57 vs 0.52 ng/ml). However, there was a highly significant (P<0.001) interaction between season and age group in mean serum progesterone levels due to a relatively greater depression in progesterone levels in yearling ewes during the hot-dry season compared with adult ewes. The observed disruptions in the oestrus cycle and serum progesterone levels of the ewes in the hot-dry season confirm the adverse effect of heat stress on the reproductive behaviour of ewes.

An analysis of the reproductive, performance of beef cattle based on 5840 records of performance from thirteen properties in Victoria was made. Traits analysed included calving rate, twinning rate, mortality of calves, age at first calving interval. When all data were pooled, mean age at first calving was 863.5 days, calving interval 361 days, calving rate 88.7 per cent, mortality rate at birth of the calves 4.3 per cent, pre-weaning mortality 1.5 per cent, post-weaning mortality 0.3 per cent and twinning rate 1.5 per cent. Wide variation in reproductive performance was observed between properties. As found in other studies, age of dam was the main factor affecting reproductive performance and adjustments to take account of this variation are necessary when comparing the performance of different animals.

Analysis was carried out on the reproductive performance of 59 WAD (Foula djullon) goats over 8 year period 1982-1990) under intensive management. The data involving a total of 176 kiddings comprising 311 kids were analysed to provide some information on the reproductive potential and the distribution of the Sexes on the WAD goats for an appraisal of its utilization for future genetic and environmental studies and the improvement of the breed in Nigeria. The results showed no significant seasonal effect on the kidding pattern. Singles, twins and triplets were 33.44, 48,23 and 16,40% respectively. Kidding interval varied from 91 to 2.10 days, annual kidding rate was 1..68 with mean kid birth weight of 1.5 +0.138, 1.49 +0.65 and 1.31+0.095kg for single twins and multiple births respectively. The average sex ratio was 48.79+0.18. The least squares constants showed that the age of dam, kidding interval and Season of kidding have significant effect on the sex ratio with more males born by those after 3 years of age particularly during the dry season 't shorter kidding intervals or 191-220 days. Calculated frequency of sex combination of males to females was 0.4005, 0.4662 and 0.1333 trizygotic, dizygotic and monozygotic twins among the triplets - The frequency was 0.67 for monzygotic twinning among the twin births. Although preweaning mortalities of 12.26, 16.33 and 19.36% were recorded for single, twin and multiple births respectively, highly significant survival rate was recorded in the dry season (84.40+0.75) than in the wet season 81,18 +0.75 whilst the kidding interval was between 200 - 240 days in about 56% of the population studied. The current emphasis on the presence  of monozygotic twins with a frequency of 67% among twin birth and 13.3% among the triplets is to assist in utilizing this trait in the goat for studies that could enhance the modification of the environment or improve the genetic potentials of the breed.
