San Domenico Church (Prato, Tuscan, Italy) is a very peculiar case of terrestrial archaeology surveyed with underwater archaeological photogrammetric approach. The vault of the choir was completely filled by a very important numbers of potteries, which is very interesting building technique. To document this technique a complete photogrammetric survey was realized, layer by layer, following underwater archaeology system. It is interesting to note that in underwater archaeology such a case is quite rare, in fact or the wreck is in shallow water and the digging can be made (but this case is now unrealistic because in shallow water all the wreck have been stolen – or already excavated by archaeologist – !) or we are in deep water, with well conserved wreck but the depth doesn’t allow the excavation. In the last case only a surface survey is possible. Also for these reasons this particular case- study is very interesting in order to test underwater methods on real case. This experimentation is a good opportunity to develop and check methods, algorithm and software to obtain a relevant model of the site merging 3D measure and knowledge about the artefact as typology, theoretical model, spatial relationship between them. Even if this work started in 2006, with now obsolete digital camera and with a photographic campaign which not respect always the current constraints for building a dense cloud of point in photogrammetry,it is now used as a case-study for developing a relevant approach for underwater archaeology survey.

ABSTRACTReal-time, in-situ surface monitoring by reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) has been the key enabling component of atomic-layer-by-layer molecular beam epitaxy (ALL-MBE) of complex oxides. RHEED patterns contain information on crystallographic arrangements and long range order on the surface; this can be made quantitative with help of numerical simulations. The dynamics of RHEED patterns and intensities reveal a variety of phenomena such as nucleation and dissolution of secondary-phase precipitates, switching between growth modes (layer-by-layer, step-flow), surface phase transitions (surface reconstruction, roughening, and even phase transitions induced by the electron beam itself), etc. Some of these phenomena are illustrated here, using as a case study our recent growth of atomically smooth a-axis oriented DyBa2Cu3O7 films.

The identification of sponges that lack a mineral skeleton is always highly challenging, especially for Hexadella species, which are also fibreless. Recently, the yellow species Hexadella pruvoti Topsent was identified as a cryptic species complex while the pink coloured Hexadella racovitzai Topsent showed two highly divergent lineages. We performed a COI phylogenetic reconstruction using 27 new Mediterranean Hexadella samples in order to confirm the presence of divergent lineages within both shallow-water species. Specimens were described with an integrative approach combining morphological and cytological investigations, biochemical profiling and assessment of natural toxicity in order to identify diagnostic characters for each taxon. H. topsenti, sp. nov. is distinguished from H. racovitzai by its colour, its surface network shape, divergent secondary metabolite patterns and toxicity values. H. crypta, sp. nov. differs from H. pruvoti by a different encrusting growth form when alive, and by distinctively colouring the ethanol fixative solution. In addition, H. pruvoti and H. crypta show different types of cells with inclusions as well as distinct metabolic fingerprints. Natural toxicity values, however, do not permit the separation of H. pruvoti and H. crypta. Our work shows that only the use of a combination of complementary tools can provide relevant descriptions for some problematic taxa.

ResumenEl análisis estratigráfico constituye una herramienta de diagnosis indispensable en obras de arqueología, que permite descifrar a arqueólogos, historiadores y antropólogos la disposición e interrelación entre los diferentes estratos y la ordenación cronológica de los restos hallados. En este campo, la fotogrametría realizada con cámara digital convencional y software de amplia difusión constituye una alternativa versátil, eficiente y asequible frente a las técnicas convencionales de representación, basadas en procedimientos artesanales y cargadas de subjetividad, cuyas principales limitaciones son analizadas. En este artículo se establecen una sencilla metodología y un modelo sistemático para la documentación y preservación de unidades estratigráficas en excavaciones arqueológicas, compatibles con la técnica de análisis estratigráfico basada en la matriz Harris. La validez y posibilidades del método han sido constatadas en el proyecto de intervención arqueológica desarrollado en la Capilla Real de la Catedral de Sevilla.AbstractThe stratigraphic analysis constitutes an essential diagnostic tool in archelogy works, which allows the archaeologists, historians and anthropologists to decipher the arrangement and interrelation between the different strata and the chronological ordering of the remains found. In this field, the photogrammetry realized with conventional digital camera and software of wide diffusion constitutes a versatile alternative, efficient and affordable in front of the conventional techniques of representation, based on artisan and loaded procedures of subjectivity, whose main limitations are analyzed. This article establishes a simple methodology and a systematic model for the documentation and preservation of stratigraphic units in archaeological excavations, compatible with the technique of stratigraphic analysis based on the Harris matrix. The validity and possibilities of the method have been verified in the project of archaeological intervention developed in the Royal Chapel of the Cathedral of Seville.

AbstractA system built to support management decisions and not only needs to be accurate and well adapted to the requirements of the decision and the variables involved in it, and this happens because a decision is still a human act in any type of business and institution. We can say that a decision support system has a part in it that cannot be determined by any software: the human decision which is not a determinist act. It depends on a lot of variables but also still involves the decision maker intuition and experience. This is why an important problem emerged to be discussed in this paper: the need to implement and develop an in house solution to help management decisions and not only, using existing tools and this with no additional fees. This can be a good opportunity to discover models and solutions. An identified solution using Microsoft Excel and Access is discussed in this paper and a model applied on a case study will be presented. The results of the case study showed a real support in making decisions and a better transparency in manipulating the data, improving also the time needed to collect, transform and present data. The model can be applied in any type of problem that needs a visual presentation of data as well as in situations that need working with a large amount of data, but especially in small and medium size companies.

Between 2015 and 2020, artist Cao Fei occupied the former Beijing-based Hongxia Theatre, transforming the space into a vehicle for creative research, production and exhibition. This article will examine Cao Fei’s engagement with multiple temporalities as directly shaped by her spatial position within the theatre. Research related to the Hongxia Theatre and surrounding former People’s Republic of China (PRC)-era factory neighbourhood informs her understanding of not only China’s industrial history but also resurging connections to themes that exist across, within and beyond traditional temporal frameworks. The following narrative will employ Asia One (2018), the first full-length film made by Cao Fei since moving into the Hongxia Theatre, as a case study, highlighting strategies in which Hongxia fosters a pivotal spatial relationship between the artist’s new work and intersecting affinities towards time, memory and nostalgia. Drawing on China’s utopian past and dreams of a fully automated future, Asia One demonstrates a temporally nonlinear yearning to record both remembered and imagined emotional attachments, despite both globalizing and domestic conditions, which engender the urge to forget.

Traffic crash hot spot analyses allow identification of roadway segments that may be of safety concern. Understanding geographic patterns of existing motor vehicle crashes is one of the primary steps for geostatistical-based hot spot analysis. Much of the current literature, however, has not paid particular attention to differentiating among cluster types based on crash severity levels. This study aims at building a framework for identifying significant spatial clustering patterns characterized by crash severity and analyzing identified clusters quantitatively. A case study using an integrated method of network-based local spatial autocorrelation and the Kernel density estimation method revealed a strong spatial relationship between crash severity clusters and geographic regions. In addition, the total aggregated distance and the density of identified clusters obtained from density estimation allowed a quantitative analysis for each cluster. The contribution of this research is incorporating crash severity into hot spot analysis thereby allowing more informed decision making with respect to highway safety.
