Abstract. In recent times, enormous damage has been caused by dyke failures during and after river flood disasters throughout the world. Besides extreme meteorological conditions the reasons for these failures are inadequate design and the actual condition of affected dyke structures. To minimize the occurrence of dyke failures in future, in a national BMBF research project (BMBF: German Federal Ministry of Education and Research) an alternative stabilisation technique has been investigated as an instrument for short term refurbishment and as an improvement to existing and endangered dyke structures. It is intended to improve the stability of dyke structures by the mechanical installation of drainage devices, thus preventing dyke failure by controlling the seepage in the structure. Within the scope of this paper selected results concerning stabilizing capability and feasibility of the stabilisation technique are presented in detail. Concerning feasibility the focus is placed on natural scale model tests to verify numerical calculations and to investigate the suitability of the adapted installation methods in situ.

Advanced data assimilation method is used for the short-term wind power forecasting based on a meso-scale model. Considerable forecast error reduction is concluded from a case study in China, where a better resolved high-resolution initial condition is introduced via assimilating various in-situ observations.

The existence of faults in the dam site area threatens the stability and safety of large-scale hydropower projects in China. The fault argillaceous zone is the worst kind of fault fracture zone, and the determination of its deformation and strength parameters is the key point of rock engineering investigation. In this study, the in-situ bearing plate test and direct shear test were carried out on the gouge zone of F67 fault in the dam site of Fengman Hydropower Station. The test results show that the deformation and shear law of each test point is good, which is basically consistent with the actual condition of the measured rock mass. However, due to the limited number of measurements, the results are limited in terms of macroscopic representation. The experimental results provide scientific basis for subsequent engineering design and further enhance the understanding of mechanical properties of fault gouges.

Education authorities throughout the world are striving to implement the principles of inclusive education. The Malaysian Ministry of Education has adopted these principles and is presently involved in translating them into practice. As part of this program, three teachers college lecturers and an officer of the Teacher Education Division undertook an intensive short-term training course at Flinders University in South Australia. The aim of this project was to devise a course in Inclusive Education that would be taught to trainee teachers in colleges throughout Malaysia. This keynote address describes the collaborative efforts of the Malaysian and Australian lecturers who developed the course and the experiences of one of these lecturers who has introduced the course into the curriculum of the Sarawak Teachers College. There are many lessons to be learned by examining how different countries attempt to solve similar problems. A number of these lessons are explored in this address.

The article provides an overview of the world literature data on lesions of the nervous system in patients who had COVID-19. The results of our own open comparative study on the effectiveness of combined use of Xavron, Tivor-L and Xylat in patients with neurological disorders in the post-COVID period are also presented. The positive effect of the above combination of drugs on cognitive functions was demonstrated, which manifested itself in increasing the rate of mental activity, improving short-term and operative memory, increasing the stability of mental processes and reducing the levels of reactive and personal anxiety.

The Al6Li3Cu (T2) phase, which exhibits five-fold or icosahedral symmetry, forms through solid state precipitation in dilute Al-Li-Cu alloys. Recent studies have reported that the T2 phase transforms either during TEM examination of thin foils or following ion-milling of thin foil specimens. Related studies have shown that T2 phase transforms to a microcrystalline array of the TB phase and a dilute aluminum solid solution during in-situ heating in the TEM. The purpose of this paper is to report results from an investigation of the influence of ion-milling on the stability of the T2 phase in dilute Al-Li-Cu alloy.The 3-mm diameter TEM disc specimens were prepared from a specially melted Al-2.5%Li-2.5%Cu alloy produced by conventional procedures. The TEM specimens were solution heat treated 1 h at 550°C and aged 1000 h at 190°C in air to develop the microstructure. The disc specimens were electropolished to achieve electron transparency using a 20:80 (vol. percent) nitric acid: methanol solution at -60°C.

The argument has focused on whether the World Bank Group was established to enhance the stability of international financial system or meant to enrich the developed nations. Rania Al Yassin was born on August 31, 1970. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the American University of Cairo in 1991. She applied this, first, to a banking career in Jordan and, later, to the information technology sector. After marrying Prince Abdullah bin Al Hussein on June 10, 1993, they went on to have four children: Prince Hussein, Princess Iman, Princess Salma, and Prince Hashem. In addition to being a wife and mother, Queen Rania works hard to lift the lives of Jordanians by supporting their endeavours and helping to create new opportunities for them. Locally, she is committed to breathe new life into the public education system; empower communities and women especially through microfinance initiatives; protect children and families; and drive innovation, technology and entrepreneurship, especially amongst young people. Internationally, Queen Rania is an advocate for tolerance, compassion and bridge building between people of all cultures and backgrounds. Her efforts to simultaneously challenge stereotypes of Arabs and Muslims, and promote greater understanding and acceptance between people of all faiths and cultures, have won her global recognition. Her Majesty’s passion is education. Her efforts in the education sector complement the work of the Ministry of Education through initiatives such as the Jordan Education Initiative, the Queen Rania Teachers Academy, Madrasati, Edraak and others. To realize these and so much more, Queen Rania has encouraged private sector partners to drive improvements and strengthen the foundations of Jordan’s education system. These include the Walther Rathenau Award from the Walther RathenauInstitut in Germany for her efforts to greater peace and understanding; the James C. Morgan Global Humanitarian Award from Tech Awards, USA; the Arab Knight of Giving Award from Arab Giving Forum, UAE; the North South Prize by the North South Prize, Portugal; as well as the YouTube Visionary Award. Her Majesty authored several books primarily for children including the Sandwich Swap, which was inspired by her own childhood experiences.

This paper reports on field studies and model development aimed at understanding coliform fate and transport in the Quabbin Reservoir, an oligotrophic drinking water supply reservoir. An investigation of reservoir currents suggested the importance of wind driven phenomena, and that both lateral and vertical circulation patterns exist. In-situ experiments of coliform decay suggested dependence on light intensity and yielded an appropriate decay coefficient to be used in CE-QUAL-W2, a two-dimensional hydrodynamic and water quality model. Modeling confirmed the sensitivity of reservoir outlet concentration to vertical variability within the reservoir, meteorological conditions, and location of coliform source.

Background: Cholera, a diarrheal illness causes millions of deaths worldwide due to large outbreaks. Monoclonal antibody used as therapeutic purposes of cholera are prone to be unstable due to various factors including self-aggregation. Objectives: In this bioinformatic analysis, we identified the aggregation prone regions (APRs) of different immunogens of antibody sequences (i.e., CTB, ZnM-CTB, ZnP-CTB, TcpA-CT-CTB, ZnM-TcpA-CT-CTB, ZnP-TcpA-CT-CTB, ZnM-TcpA, ZnP-TcpA, TcpA-CT-TcpA, ZnM-TcpA-CT-TcpA, ZnP-TcpA-CT-TcpA, Ogawa, Inaba and ZnM-Inaba) raised against Vibrio cholerae. Methods: To determine APRs in antibody sequences that were generated after immunizing Vibrio cholerae immunogens on Mus musculus, a total of 94 sequences were downloaded as FASTA format from a protein database and the algorithms such as Tango, Waltz, PASTA 2.0, and AGGRESCAN were followed to analyze probable APRs in all of the sequences. Results: A remarkably high number of regions in the monoclonal antibodies were identified to be APRs which could explain a cause of instability/short term protection of anticholera vaccine. Conclusion: To increase the stability, it would be interesting to eliminate the APR residues from the therapeutic antibodies in a such way that the antigen binding sites or the complementarity determining region loops involved in antigen recognition are not disrupted.
