The aim of this study was to clarify the characteristics of skiing by a single-leg amputee ski racer from the viewpoints of muscle activity, morphology, and the relationship between both elements through comparisons with those of a non-disabled ski racer. One elite athlete, classified as LW2 (left thigh amputation), and one non-disabled athlete, as a control, participated in this study. The cross-sectional area of thigh muscles was measured through magnetic resonance imaging. Additionally, muscle activities and joint and segment kinematics during slalom skiing were measured using electromyography and inertial measurement units, respectively. The muscle activities and joint kinematics of the amputee racer in the turn in which he performed with the inside edge of the ski were similar to those of the outside leg of the non-disabled racer over a turn. In contrast, at the turn in which the amputee racer performed with the outside edge (more difficult side), the amputee racer largely activated the biceps femoris (BF) in the first half of the turn compared to the non-disabled racer. The reason could be to control the angular momentum of the trunk during the forward tilting motion. This is because a greater activity of the BF was observed during the period in which the forward tilt of the trunk was increased, and the mean activity of the BF was the greatest during the first half of the right turn in which the range of the motion of the forward tilt was the greatest. In terms of muscle morphology of the amputee racer, a significant hypertrophy of the BF and vastus lateralis was observed compared to the non-disabled racers. The well-developed BF was considered to be related to the large activity during the turn performed with the outside edge of the ski.

The relationship between instantaneous distending pressure and diameter of the pulmonary artery was studied in 18 living thoracotomized dogs. An electrical caliper with adequate recording characteristics was developed for instantaneous diameter measurement. Control observations were made over a range of pressures induced by rapid, right heart dextran-infusion and were compared with those obtained during norepinephrine administration. Results indicate: a) the pulse contours of the pulmonary artery pressure and diameter are essentially identical, indicating negligible inertance and viscous resistance of the vessel wall, b) the mean change in average radius during a cardiac cycle was ±7.8% ± 2.86 S.D. ± .32 S.E.M. (0.48%/cm H2O pulse pressure) under control conditions, c) the ratio of change in radius to pulse pressure, R/P, showed a significant decrease during norepinephrine administration when compared to control values within the same pressure range (P < .01) and d) the cross-sectional area of the main pulmonary artery exceeded that of the right and left combined. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the relationship between BMI and tooth decay in a population of Iranian children. In this cross-sectional descriptive/analytical study, 1482 children were selected from kindergartens and preschool centers in Kerman, Iran. The children underwent examination of deciduous teeth (using the dmft index) after determination of height and weight for calculation of BMI. The relationship between BMI (after adjustment for age) and dmft was determined using Poisson’s regression model. The mean of dmft in children with normal BMI was 1.5-fold that in subjects with extra body weight. Age had a significant effect on dmft. In addition, dmft was higher in boys compared to girls. The results of the present study showed that caries rate in the deciduous teeth of 3–6-year-old children decreases with an increase in body weight.

Background Many studies have investigated the adherence to professional codes of ethics by nurses. However, no study has explicitly examined the relationship between workload and adherence to professional codes of ethics among Iranian nurses. Objective This study aimed to explore the relationships between workload and adherence to professional codes of ethics among a sample of Iranian nurses. Materials and Methods A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 213 nurses who were randomly selected from the different wards of Shahid Beheshti Hospital of Kashan, Iran. Data collection instruments included a personal characteristics questionnaire, the Nursing Ethics Questionnaire, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Task Load Index. The Chi-square, the Spearman correlation coefficient, the Kruskal–Wallis, and Mann–Whitney U tests were used to analyze the data. Results A majority of nurses were females (77.5%), married (79.3%), and permanently employed (55.4%). The mean of the overall perceived workload and adherence to professional codes of ethics were 76.36 ± 13.64 and 13.98 ± 2.58, that were at high and moderated level, respectively. Spearman correlation test showed no significant correlation between perceived workload and adherence to professional codes of ethics ( r = 0.03, P = 0.6). A significant difference was found between the mean scores of adherence to professional codes of ethics in nurses working in different departments ( P < 0.001). Conclusion Participating nurses perceived high levels of workload but their mean adherence to professional codes of ethics was at a moderate level. The perceived workload was indirectly correlated with adherence to professional codes of ethics.

Abstract Funding Acknowledgements Dr Teres was funded by Swiss Heartrhythm Foundation Introduction pulmonary vein (PV) reconnections due to gaps on circumferential ablation lines are responsible for atrial fibrillation recurrences after catheter ablation. We sought to analyze the local left atrial wall thickness (LAWT) of PV line gaps at AF redo ablation during real-time catheter positioning. LAWT was measured on the MDCT 3D reconstruction and fused with the LA anatomy using CARTO-merge. Objective To analyze the relationship between local reconnection gaps and the LAWT during AF redo procedures. Methods Single-Center cohort study that included 41 consecutive patients referred for AF redo procedure. All patients had a MDCT prior to the ablation procedure. LAWT maps were semi-automatically computed from the MDCT as the local distance between the LA endo and epicardium. Each PV line was subdivided into 8 segments and mean LAWT was computed. During the procedure, the local gap was defined as the earliest activation site at the reconnected segment of the circumferential PV line (Figure 1A & 1B). Results 41 patients [31 (75.6%) male, age 60 ± 10 years] were included. Mean LAWT was 1.36 ± 0.20 mm. Mean PV circumferential line WT was higher in left PVs than in the right PVs 1.68 ± 0.57 vs. 1.31 ± 0.39 mm p < 0.001 respectively. Mean WT of the reconnected points was 44% higher than the mean WT of the segment where the reconnection was located. Mean reconnection point WT was at the 87th percentile of the circumferential line in the LPVs and at the 76th percentile in the RPVs. The reconnected point WT was higher in the LPVs than RPVs 2.13 ± 1.14 vs. 1.47 ± 0.48 mm p < 0.001 respectively. The most frequent location for reconnections was the left anterior carina (71%), with a mean WT of 2.24 ± 0.91mm; and the right anterior carina (56%) with a mean WT of 1.57 ± 0.62mm (Figure 2A & 2B). Conclusions Reconnection points were more frequently present in the thicker segments of the PV circumferential line. The most frequently reconnected segment was the anterior carina in both right and left PVs. Atrial wall thickness maps derived from MDCT are useful to guide AF redo procedures. 1. Rhythmic activity was induced with either serotonin (5-HT; 10-100 microM) or dopamine (0.1-1.0 mM), in the in vitro spinal cord preparation of neonatal rats, with one intact hindlimb attached. Patterns of activity were investigated with multiple EMG recordings and the spatiotemporal characteristics of 5-HT- and dopamine-induced activity compared. 2. Dopamine-induced rhythmic activity was slow (cycle duration: 2.2-70.1 s) and irregular, whereas rhythmic activity induced by 5-HT was fast (cycle duration: 1.3-5.1 s) and regular. 3. During 5-HT- and dopamine-induced rhythmic activity, the timing of muscular activity was similar for hip flexors and hip adductors, for semimembranosus (hip extensor), and for muscles controlling the ankle and the foot. 4. In contrast, notable differences in the phase in the pattern induced by 5-HT compared with that induced by dopamine were found in the biceps femoris, semitendinosus, and quadriceps muscles. Biceps femoris and semitendinosus (functional hip extensors and knee flexors) were always extensor-like during 5-HT-induced activity, whereas in dopamine, these muscles displayed flexor-like bursts and double bursts as well as extensor-like bursts. Lack of EMG activity in biceps femoris and semitendinosus was encountered also in dopamine. In rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, and vastus medialis (main function: knee extension), the activity was dominated by flexor-like bursts in 5-HT, whereas in dopamine the activity was shifted to a predominantly extensor-like pattern. 5. The relationship between flexor and extensor burst duration and cycle duration was more variable than described for locomotor activity in adult animals. 6. The relative timing of muscle activity was stable from P0 to P4. The most important difference between rats aged 0-1 days and rats aged 2-4 days was a delayed flexor-extensor transition in older animals. 7. The complex timing of hindlimb muscle activity was relatively unchanged after transecting all dorsal roots. 8. Finally, the relationship between flexor and extensor activity and ventral root discharges was determined. It was found that the L2 ventral root burst was in phase with simple flexors while the L5 burst coincide with the extensor phase. 9. We conclude, that 5-HT and dopamine can activate spinal central pattern generators (CPGs) that already at birth are able to produce distinct patterns of motor activity. Modulatory inputs thus seems to be able to reconfigure the CPGs to produce specific motor outputs.

Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the relationship between hopelessness and perceived social support levels of parents with children with congenital heart disease (CHD). Material and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted with parents of children who underwent surgery for CHD, and data were collected from 100 parents who agreed to participate in the study. A descriptive information form for the sociodemographic characteristics of the parents, “Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS)” and “Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS)” were used to collect the data. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and Spearman’s correlation tests. Results: The mean score of the hopelessness level of the parents participating in the study was 6.15±4.23, and the mean perceived general social support score was 69.55±15.47. There was a significant negative correlation between the hopelessness levels of mothers and social support (SS) received from the family, from significant others, and general SS scores. There was a significant positive correlation between the hopelessness levels of the mothers and the SS level received from the family (p<0.05). Conclusion: In this study, the parents of children with CHD have low levels of hopelessness and perceived SS levels are high. Moreover, the relationship between hopelessness and perceived SS levels varies according to the sex of the parents. In our study, the SS level of mothers had a higher effect on the hopelessness level. It is recommended that the SS levels of the parents of children with CHD should be increased to help them cope with hopelessness.
