Verbal Group Complexes Application In Palang Tamak Text Systemic Functional Linguistics Perspective

Pan Balang Tamak text is one of Balinese narrative texts developing in Balinese communities. This text contains very deep moral value that is very useful for communities to achieve happiness in the world. The moral values embed in the clauses constructing the text in metaphorical meaning. Many clauses constructing the text contain verbal group complexes in which describe kinds of actions done by the participants. This paper analyzes the application of verbal group complexes in Pan Balang Tamak text written by Suptra (2014). The theory used to analyze the verbal group complexes is the theory of group complex from Systemic Functional Linguistics from Halliday (2014). The paper used qualitative research, namely by the theory approach, the technique used is based on syntagmatic and paradigmatic based on field, tenor, mode. The result of the research suggested that both verbal group complexes in paratactic and in hypotactic were found in the text. Paratactic can be found in the way of the communities respect their bad behavior and the real condition happening to all animal living in the forest. The hypotactic were found the clauses which contain the effort to trap Pan Balang Tamak and the advantages obtained by Pan Balang Tamak from the efforts which be trap Pan Balang Tamak. Projection verb can be found in verbal process in which mean proposal, namely, the willing to trap Pan Balang Tamak

This study examined the progress of English as a foreign language (EFL) writers using the instructional framework of systemic functional linguistics (SFL) and the communities of practice (CoPs) model. The study participants comprised 11 first-year undergraduate students in Japan with intermediate-level English proficiency who were exposed to SFL in a single EFL classroom (CoP). The participants’ genre understanding and meaning-making decisions when writing discussion essays were studied over two semester-long courses. To do so, their developmental changes were analyzed using pre- and post-instructional writing tasks. In particular, their ability to convey interpersonal meaning, such as through the use of modal verbs, was examined and compared between the pre- and post-tasks. To triangulate the findings, participants’ genre awareness in relation to discussion essays was also examined using in-depth qualitative analysis of their self-reflective texts and peer assessments, based on a grounded theory approach. In the pre-writing task, it was apparent that the learners lacked understanding of the components of discussion essay writing. However, analysis of their post-instructional tasks revealed that most had begun to apply the language components required to convey interpersonal meaning in their discussion genre texts. These results suggest that the changes in learner’s genre awareness and knowledge affected the lexicogrammatical features they used when writing discussion essays. Thus, this study concludes that applying the SFL framework to writing instruction enhanced EFL learners’ awareness of textual meaning and their understanding of the function of discussion essay texts.

Great value and culture of Indonesian people that very popular around the world. The highly complex conflict in Indonesia is generally extremely concerning, particularly the normative downturn. This same real dilemma is also taking place in the world of schooling. So this study aimed to reveal the moral value and instrinsic elements form the novel Black Notice by Patricia Cornwell relate to people from different environment by interview. The data of the research were gained through triangulation technique taken from novel, book review and interview which are analysed with desrcriptive qualitatively afterwards,and describe the condition and relation which are held and process still going. The results of the study found that certain moral values and intrinsic features include the novel Black Notice by Patricia Cornwell using the Social And cultural Historical Technique and the Biographical Framework.

Adolescents all over the world have communicated with one another through the Internet by means of personal sites called Blogs, in which they say what they think and feel about life, and interact electronically with people from different places. This is a new mode of literacy which is leading adolescents to writing spontaneously about diverse topics. They use multimodal texts in which they integrate different types of semiosis. In this paper, we will examine the language of this new genre according to critical discourse analysis (Fairclough, 1992), genre analysis (Bakhtin, 1992) and systemic functional linguistics (Halliday, 1985).

Folklore is a story that originated in society and developed in society in the past which played an important role in the development of children's character learning in the form of moral values. The purpose of this study was to explain the moral values contained in folklore to improve character education. This study used a qualitative descriptive research design. Where all the data collected is based on books and other supporting document data. From the discussion of the Timun Mas folklore, there are eight prominent moral values, namely religious values, independent values, curiosity values, hard work values, responsibility values, honesty values, creativity, the value of the spirit of hard work. And from the research results, it can be concluded that the folklore of Timun Mas has many moral values that can be applied in the world of Education to shape character.

Unlike modern narrative, which often goes into great detail in order to develop characters and themes, the narrator in the Old Testament is reticent, and the narrative is typically terse. There are many ambiguous passages involving actions of dubious propriety, resulting in readers being uncertain how to assess characters and draw ideological conclusions from their actions. It is too easy for modern readers to filter interpretive decisions through their presuppositions and values. Appraisal theory, an area of systemic functional linguistics, acts not to eliminate but to constrain the subjectivity of the interpreter and increase the transparency of the process by looking for specific linguistic signals in the text that can be presented as evidence. These instantiations are drawn mainly from the interpersonal metafunction, but also involve the textual and ideational metafunctions. J.R. Martin and P.R.R. White developed a system network through which text is processed in order to identify evaluative language; however, their work is based primarily on contemporary English texts of a rhetorical nature, such as political speeches and reviews. This article presents a modified system network, the “Narrative Appraisal Method,” adapted for Hebrew narrative texts. It operates not only at the level of the clause but also at higher levels of discourse. It takes into consideration the characteristics of narrative and the point of view of the evaluator. The article provides specific examples of the results the methodology yields from the book of Judges, focusing on situations in which pronominal forms play a relevant role.

The article looks at the nature of the academic lecture genre, its specific characteristics in comparison to other types of written or spoken modes of different genres. It introduces key theories of Genre Schools, such as New Rhetoric Studies, Systemic Functional Linguistics and English for Specific Purposes, explores the peculiarities of the university lecture as a separate genre, looks at its structure and studies the characteristic features.

Around the world, museums dedicate enormous resources to developing exhibitions with the aim of making their collections and knowledge accessible to broad public audiences. Interpretive texts, both spoken and written, play an important role in this endeavour, underpinned by the belief that they will add ‘something more’ to the experience gained by looking alone. But is this belief justified? This article draws on recent theoretical developments in systemic functional linguistics (SFL) and multimodal semiotics to explore the complexity of meanings and relations involved in the interaction between (verbal) text, displayed artefact and visitor in an art exhibition and a history exhibition. Focusing on two key dimensions, vergence and presence, it shows how the texts work in very different ways to shape visitor experience, both in terms of scaffolding the interaction and in adding meaning to the encounter. It proposes the idea of ‘verbal vectors’ that are gradable in strength as a feature that explicitly ‘motivates’ visitors to look at the displayed artefacts and the idea of ‘shell’ vectors as a particular feature of texts in art exhibitions.

Abstract A number of studies on transitivity systems of languages have been conducted in the field of Systemic Functional Linguistics. Different linguists have described the transitivity systems of English, French, German, Japanese, Tagalog, Chinese, Vietnamese, Telugu, and Pitjantjatjara, adopting an upward approach which is not effective enough for discourse analysis. So far, there has been no description of the transitivity system of Myanmar in literature. The purpose of this paper is to put forward a clear description of the transitivity system of Myanmar that functions as one of the clause analysis methods from the experiential perspective. To construct a workable transitivity system of Myanmar, the present study follows He’s (forthcoming) (He, Wei. forthcoming. Categorization of experience of the world and construction of transitivity system of Chinese) new description of the Chinese transitivity system containing 32 types of processes that represent our experience of the world. Unlike previous studies, He (forthcoming) proposes autonomous and influential processes of action, mental and relational clauses with no description of ergativity hypothesized by Halliday (1985) (Halliday, Michael Alexander Kirkwood. 1985. An introduction to functional grammar. London: Arnold) and Matthiessen (1995) (Matthiessen, C. M. I. M. 1995. Lexicogrammatical cartography: English systems. Tokyo: International Language Sciences Publishers). This new model is more comprehensive and effective than previous ones because it adopts a downward approach which can smoothly be applied to discourse analysis. In this paper, the transitivity analysis of Myanmar clauses is performed in accordance with the theories put forward by He (forthcoming) and the semantic configurations of 32 processes in Myanmar transitivity system are illustrated with authentic examples. Findings show that the proposed transitivity system of Myanmar can analyze clauses effectively, and it is compatible with the discourse analysis of Myanmar. These findings will make an important contribution to further study of the systemic functional grammar of Myanmar.

In homage to the work of Uroš Mozetič, the paper takes as its starting point previously developed suggestions about how the language of “Eveline” conveys a picture of the heroine as a passive, paralysed character. Using Hallidayan Systemic Functional Linguistics as a model of stylistic analysis, it investigates the contribution of both the ideational and the interpersonal metafunctions to the meaning of the text. The results extend and amend some ideas from the literature, such as the supposed prevalence of stative verbs, and suggest that while the short story as a whole predominantly uses material processes, their potential for change is mitigated by Joyce’s aspect, tense, and usuality choices. Eveline as the main character crucially has the role of a Senser, observing and internally reacting to the world around her, and even the processes in which she acts upon things and people are modalised and shown to be either hypothetical or instigated by others.

Increasing more studies and translations of Sun Tzu’s Art of War which is one of the leading military masterpieces around the world has been witnessed in recent years. This paper reviews the translation by Sawyer, Minford, Lin and Huang to probe into the characteristics and mistranslations within the framework of Context Theory in Systemic Functional Linguistics. It is found that Sawyer’s translation excels in the recontextualization of context of culture with rich para-texts, Minford tends to interpret with western discourse, Lin excels in comparatively accurate understanding of the source text and Huang’s translation merits in the recontextualization of language and military cultures.
