  THE CORRELATION BETWEEN VITAMIN D SERUM LEVELS WITH QUALITY OF LIFE IN EPILEPSY PATIENTABSTRACTIntroduction: Epilepsy affects overall health status and decreases the life quality of epilepsy patient. Seizure frequency, seizure type, daily activity disorder, depression and anxiety also affect the quality of life epilepsy patient. Vitamin D is considered as a neurosteroid modulator of nerve excitability and seizure susceptibility. Studies of vitamin D direct role in epilepsy are limited. Nevertheless, some studies show the role of vitamin D as an anticonvulsant that reduces the incidence of seizures.Aim: To determine the correlation between vitamin D serum levels with quality of life in epilepsy patient.Method: A cross sectional observational study on people with epilepsy in neurology clinic at Dr. Soeselo Hospital, Slawi, Dr Kariadi Hospital, and Tugurejo Hospital, Semarang in July 2017-January 2018. The quality of life was assessed with Quality of Life in Epilepsy 31 (QOLIE-31). Vitamin D serum levels measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. Data were analyzed using Spearman test. Results were considered significant if p<0.05.Results: There was no correlation between vitamin D serum levels with quality of life in epilepsy. There was significant correlation between anxiety with quality of life and there were difference between age group with quality of life. Discussion: There was no correlation between serum vitamin D levels and  quality of life in epilepsy patient.Keywords: Epilepsy,quality of life epilepsy, vitamin DABSTRAKPendahuluan: Epilepsi mempengaruhi status kesehatan secara keseluruhan dan menurunkan kualitas hidup pasien epilepsi. Frekuensi bangkitan, tipe bangkitan, gangguan aktivitas harian, depresi dan ansietas, juga memengaruhi kualitas hidup pasien epilepsi. Vitamin D dianggap neurosteroid, sebagai modulator eksitabilitas saraf dan kerentanan bangkitan. Bukti langsung untuk peran vitamin D dalam epilepsi terbatas. Namun beberapa penelitian menunjukkan peran vitamin D sebagai antikonvulsan yang mengurangi kejadian bangkitan.Tujuan: Mengetahui hubungan kadar vitamin D serum dengan kualitas hidup pada pasien epilepsi.Metode: Penelitian potong lintang terhadap pasien epilepsi yang berobat ke Poliklinik Saraf RSUD Dr. Soeselo, Slawi, RSUP Dr. Kariadi, Semarang, dan RS Tugurejo, Semarang pada bulan Juli 2017-Januari 2018. Kualitas hidup dinilai menggunakan kuesioner Quality of Life in Epilepsy 31 (QOLIE-31), pengukuran kadar vitamin D serum menggunakan metode enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Data dianalisis dengan uji Spearman, hasil dianggap bermakna jika p<0,05.Hasil: Tidak didapatkan hubungan antara kadar vitamin D serum dengan kualitas hidup serta domainnya pada pasien epilepsi. Didapatkan hubungan yang bermakna antara ansietas dengan kualitas hidup dan antara kelompok usia dengan kualitas hidup.Diskusi: Tidak terdapat hubungan bermakna antara kadar vitamin D serum dengan kualitas hidup pada pasien epilepsi.Kata kunci: Epilepsi, kualitas hidup, vitamin D

As the relationship between vitamin D and various diseases or health conditions has become known, interest in the contribution of vitamin D to overall health-related quality of life (QoL) has increased. We examined the relationship between vitamin D status and QoL in 273 participants aged 65 years and older. Serum levels of total calcium, phosphorus, intact parathyroid hormone, albumin, and 25-hydroxyvitaminD3 were analyzed. We also recruited data for QoL, physical activity, nutritional impairment, and muscular strength. Ninety percent of the subjects were classified as vitamin D deficient or insufficient. Participants with higher serum 25(OH)D3, calcium, phosphorous, and Alb levels were significantly less likely to self-report depression or anxiety after adjustment (p = 0.009, p = 0.005, p = 0.003, and p = 0.005, respectively). Additionally, we found an association between lower levels of albumin and self-reported problems with mobility or usual activities (p = 0.01). We also found associations between better muscle strength and higher levels of vitamin D, calcium, phosphorous, and albumin (p = 0.006, p = 0.003, p = 0.004 and p = 0.002, respectively). Overall, our data provide evidence that serum vitamin D and Alb levels are negatively related to self-reported anxiety or depression, usual activities, mobility, and three dimensions of QoL in older adults. Furthermore, vitamin D levels are positively related to hand grip strength in adults over 65 years old.

Objectives: Aim of the study was investigating the effect of serum vitamin D levels on health-related quality of life in hemodialysis patients. Method: One-hundred and twenty-three maintenance hemodialysis patients were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Patients divided into 2 groups according to serum vitamin D levels. A serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH] D) level of < 20 ng/mL was identified as vitamin D deficiency (n = 78), and a serum level of ≥20 ng/mL was identified as normal (n = 45). Kidney Disease Quality of Life 36 (KDQOL-36) survey was used for quality of life measurement. Scores of the all of 5 subscales of KDQOL-36 were calculated. Multiple linear regression analyses were used to define independent risk factors affecting the survey. Results: Mean age of patients was 62 and 56% of patients were male. Mean 25(OH) D levels were 11.86 and 29.57 ng/mL, respectively, in 2 groups. There was statistically significant difference between age and Kt/V levels between 2 groups (p = 0.008 and p = 0.041). Age and gender were found as significant predictors of vitamin D deficiency (p = 0.026 and p = 0.021). In symptom and problem list subscale, gender and comorbidity were detected as independent risk factors (p = 0.050 and p = 0.032). Comorbidity was the only independent risk factor for effect of kidney disease subscale (p < 0.001). Independent risk factors associated with burden of kidney disease subscale were comorbidity and serum 25 (OH) D levels (p = 0.003 and p = 0.023). Serum 25(OH) D, gender, and comorbidity were independently associated with physical component summary (PCS) subscale (p < 0.001, p = 0.008, and p = 0.011). The only independently associated factor with mental component summary (MCS) was serum 25(OH) D (p < 0.001). Conclusion: We first showed the relationship between serum vitamin D levels and KDQOL-36 in hemodialysis patients. Lower serum vitamin D levels were negatively associated with burden of kidney disease, PCS, and MCS subscales.

Introduction Vitamin D deficiency is associated with various diseases. Prevalent in Brazil, it can result from inadequate lifestyle habits. Objective To demonstrate that postmenopausal women with vitamin D deficiency have worse quality of health, expressed as worse quality of life, lower levels of physical activity, and worse nutritional profile. Methods Postmenopausal women answered questionnaires about physical activity and quality of life, provided a 24-hour food record, and had serum vitamin D levels measured. Results Among the more active women, those who perform a daily average of one hour of physical activity had vitamin D levels above 20 ng/mL (76.9%), and those, which expose themselves to sunlight, had vitamin D levels above 30 ng/mL (34.6%). Meanwhile the percentages for the women who are less physically active and less exposed to sunlight were 42.2% and 8.9% respectively. Being more active and more exposed to sunlight resulted in a lower fat percentage. Serum vitamin D levels were not correlated with quality of life. Conclusion Walking and gardening increased serum vitamin D levels and decreased the percentage of body fat. The limitations of the study prevented the impact of 25-hidroxyvitamin D on the quality of life and nutritional aspects of the women from being evaluated.

ABSTRACT Objective: Vitamin D has taken center stage in research and treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS). The objective of the present study was to assess the serum vitamin D levels of a large population of patients with MS and controls living in a restricted tropical area. Methods: Data from 535 patients with MS and 350 control subjects were obtained from 14 cities around the Tropic of Capricorn. Results: The mean serum 25-OH vitamin D level was 26.07 ± 10.27 ng/mL for the control subjects, and 28.03 ± 12.19 ng/mL for patients with MS. No correlation was observed between vitamin D levels and the disability of patients over the disease duration. Conclusion: At least for the region around the Tropic of Capricorn, serum levels of vitamin D typically are within the range of 20 to 30 ng/mL for controls and patients with MS.

Abstract Objective: to broaden knowledge about the factors associated with sarcopenia and frailty in elderly persons residing in the community. Method: an integrative systematic review based on the PRISMA recommendations was carried out, using articles published from 2012 to March 2017 in the PubMED, SciELO, Virtual Health Library, CINAHL and Springer electronic databases with the following descriptors: frail elderly, sarcopenia and etiology and their synonyms. The articles identified by the initial search strategy were independently assessed by two researchers, according to the eligibility criteria, and the articles selected were evaluated for methodological quality. Results: the results of this survey show that frailty may be associated with sarcopenia, low serum vitamin D levels, anemia, subclinical hyperthyroidism in men, while the greatest evolution in women was for osteoporosis. An association between sarcopenia and advanced age was also observed, with worsening quality of life, physical-functional capacity, nutritional status and comorbidities, as well as an increased risk of death in sarcopenic elderly persons. Conclusion: this systematic review showed that low serum levels of vitamin D are associated with frailty and factors that predispose this condition. It is therefore important to monitor the serum levels of this vitamin in the elderly population, and it is suggested that new studies are carried out related to supplements of this vitamin in frail elderly persons.

AbstractIrritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a chronic and debilitating functional disorder of the gastrointestinal tract with serious and detrimental impacts on quality of life. Its aetiology is largely unknown, and the identification of effective management strategies remains far from complete. Research suggests that people with IBS have a high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency, which may impact on symptom severity and quality of life.A double-blind, placebo-controlled, 2-arm, parallel-design study is underway to investigate the effect of a 12 week, 3,000IU vitamin D p.d. supplementation on symptom severity and quality of life in participants with a clinical diagnosis of IBS. This report assesses whether relationships exist between vitamin D status, IBS severity and quality of life in the baseline (cross-sectional) data.Eighty males and females with a clinical diagnosis of IBS were recruited in phase I of the trial in January-April 2018. Mixed-type IBS and constipation-predominant IBS were the more frequent subtypes (36% and 33%), while diarrhoea-predominant had a lower prevalence (23%). More females (n = 65) than males (n = 15) were recruited to the study which reflects the reported greater prevalence of IBS in women. Baseline serum 25(OH)D levels in participants were classified as deficient 23.1% (n = 18) (< 30nmol/L), insufficient 37.2% (n = 29) (31–49 nmol/L) and sufficient 39.7% (n = 31) (> 50 nmol/L) respectively. The sample median for serum vitamin D at baseline was 42.2 (± 28.3) nmol/L. Quality of Life was significantly associated with two IBS sub-symptoms: pain (p = 0.037, r = 0.233) and distension severity (p = 0.009, r = 0.291). Neither Quality of Life, nor IBS symptom severity score, correlated with vitamin D status in the sample.This study found no relationship between baseline vitamin D status and symptom severity or quality of life in this subsample. Two publications report vitamin D intervention improves quality of life in participants with IBS. It is possible that the unusual homogeneity of these studies enabled identification of these relationships.These initial observations agree with previous reports of widespread vitamin D insufficiency in people with IBS. Analysis of full trial outcomes (July 2019) will determine whether vitamin D supplementation is beneficial for either symptoms severity or quality of life in people with IBS.

Women experience more stress in middle age than in other life stages, and health in middle age is vital, because it influences the quality of life in old age. In this study, the effects of a forest therapy program on physiological changes in 53 middle-aged women (divided into two groups) who lived in the city were examined. One group participated in a three-day program in the forest, followed by three days in the city; the other group participated in a three-day program in the city, followed by three days in the forest. Forest experiments were conducted in a “healing forest,” and urban experiments were conducted near a university campus. Blood tests were performed to evaluate the physiological effects of forest therapy. Differences in serotonin levels and vitamin D levels were verified before and after the forest (experimental group) and urban (control group) programs through paired t-tests. Statistically significant increases in serotonin levels were noted for participants in the forest program; vitamin D levels also increased, but not by statistically significant values. The findings of this study verify that forest therapy programs promote health among middle-aged women, and may prevent disease and improve quality of life.
