Objective. To study features of histamine metabolism in patients with chronic pelvic pain associated with external genital endometriosis. Methods. For quantitative assessment of histamine level in peripheral blood was taken from 100 patients which than was centrifuged. In blood serum histamine concentration was determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method with reagents «Histamine ЕLISA» on the machine BAE-1000 Histamine (Labor Diagnostika Nord - LDN, Hermany). A pain syndrome was assessed by Visual Analog Scale (VAS), quality of life assessment - by Endometriosis Health Profile Questionnaire (EHR-30), level of anxiety was determined by Spielberger-Khanin questionnaire. The results. Showed statistically higher histamine level in patients with severe pain according to VAS. After assessment of results obtained from Spielberger-Khanin questionnaire 100% experimental group’s women with external genital endometriosis (n = 60) were noted to be have high level of state and trait anxiety, then 40% women of control group (n = 16) have moderate level of anxiety. The incidence of depression in women with chronic pelvic pain was 58.3% (n = 35) and the main part (n = 20) were women with severe stage of pelvic pain according to VAS. Conclusions. Psycho emotional condition of women with external genital endometriosis associated pelvic pain characterized by higher depression and anxiety levels, with significant decrease quality of life. Direct relationship also was found between pain syndrome intensity and histamine level in peripheral blood in patients with external genital endometriosis.

Chronic neck myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) is a common disorder seen in clinics. There is no gold standard method to treat myofascial pain. We investigated the effects of acupuncture on patients with chronic neck MPS by a single-blind randomized controlled trial. A total of 35 patients were randomly allocated to an acupuncture group (AG) or a sham acupuncture group (SG). Each subject received acupuncture treatment twice per week for three consecutive weeks. The primary outcome measure was quality of life as assessed with Short Form-36, and secondary outcome measures were neck range of motion (ROM), motion-related pain, and Short-Form McGill Pain Questionnaire (SF-MPQ), as determined by a blinded investigator. The clinical assessments were made before treatment (BT) and after six acupuncture treatments (AT), as well as four weeks (F1) and 12 weeks (F2) after the end of the treatment. A total of 34 patients completed the trial. The results indicated that there is no significant difference in the ROM, motion-related pain, and SF-MPQ scores between AG and SG at AT, F1 and F2 (all p > 0.05). However, AG has greater improvement in physical functioning and role emotional of Short Form-36 quality of life at F2. The results indicate that acupuncture may be used to improve the quality of life in patients with chronic neck MPS.

Summary Objective: This study describes the summary scores of the Short Form-12 (SF-12) questionnaire, according to socio-demographic factors obtained in a probabilistic and representative sample of the Brazilian urban population. Method: Five thousand (5,000) individuals, over the age of 15, were assessed in 16 capital cities, in the five regions of the country. The selection of households was random. Face-to-face approach was applied in the household interviews. The SF-12 questionnaire was used to assess quality of life. Demographic and socioeconomic characteristics were also evaluated: gender, age, marital status, skin color, region of the country and use of the public health service. Results: The mean value (SD) of the SF-12 for the entire population was 49.3 (8.7) for the physical component (PCS-12) and 52.7 (9.7) for the mental component (MCS-12). Statistical differences were found for gender (PCS-12 and MCS-12), age (PCS-12) and working status (PCS-12 and MCS-12). Women, elderly, widowed and unemployed individuals, those with lower income and with complaints in the last seven days showed lower mean values (PCS-12 and MCS-12). Conclusion: From this point forward, we can provide the basis for comparisons with future research that use the SF-12 for quality of life assessment in Brazil. The Brazilian population has a lower degree of quality of life related do the physical component, and the SF-12 is a useful and discriminative instrument for assessing quality of life in different socio-demographic groups.

Satisfaction with quality of life and self-attitude in patients operated by «traditional» (conventional surgical methods) and endoscopically assisted methods are considered in the article. Differences in the quality of life in patients, self-attitude to ones appearance are described. 65 patients were surgically operated and examined. Control group – patients operated by «traditional» techniques (35 patients), the average age of patients was 38 ± 11,1 years. The comparison group – patients operated using endoscopically assisted methods (30 patients), the average age of patients was 44 ± 17,7 years. Psychodiagnostic methods: 1. N. E. Vodopyanova`s scale of life quality; 2. The Short Form-36; 3. S.R. Panteleev`s Assessment of self-relationship. Complaints of paresthesia and pain experienced by patients who underwent a “traditional” operation were revealed as a result of the examination. Operated on with an endoscopically assisted method patients did not present any complaints. Differences between the assessment of the life quality and self-relationship in examined groups were found. Operated on with an endoscopically assisted method patients evaluated life quality, satisfaction with their appearance and physical condition higher than patients operated on with a “traditional” method.

Background. In conditions of permanent progress in the quality of surgical care in various areas of surgery, it is very important to allow patients themselves to evaluate provided treatment. Aims: this paper analyzes the quality of life in individuals with acute lower limb ischemia who have undergone lower limb revascularization surgery. Materials and methods. An assessment of the quality of life of 122 patients with acute lower limb ischemia (ALI) of II degree who were treated at the Moscow Сity Сlinical Hospital оf S.S. Yudin from 2016 to 2018 (average age 72.1 14.7 years) was performed. The quality of life was assessed using the medical Outcomes Study-Short Form (MOS SF-36) quality of life assessment methodology. Results. When assessing the quality of life of patients, it was found that the psychological and physical components of patients health are significantly affected by the angiotropic effect of the affecting factor associated with the presence of diabetes mellitus. 1 month after surgical restoration of blood flow against the background of the initial embolism, 83.6% of the respondents who did not suffer from diabetes noted a persistent improvement in their General condition and quality of life. Conclusion. This method of assessing the quality of life after surgical restoration of blood flow in patients with acute lower limb ischemia can be used in angiosurgical practice and clearly reflects of patient satisfaction with the treatment.

Background: Amputation of a limb impacts on patients’ self-perception and quality of life. Prostheses directly anchored to the skeleton are being investigated, aiming to avoid soft tissue complications. Objectives: We report outcome data for the UK trial of the Osseointegrated Prosthesis for the Rehabilitation of Amputees Implant System with a minimum of 9-year follow-up. Methods: Eighteen transfemoral amputees received unilateral implants between 1997 and 2008. Five were implanted before a formalised protocol, called Osseointegrated Prosthesis for the Rehabilitation of Amputees, was developed. Mean follow-up of the Pre-Osseointegrated Prosthesis for the Rehabilitation of Amputees group is 11.4 years (1.8–18.6 years), while for the Post-Osseointegrated Prosthesis for the Rehabilitation of Amputees group it is 12.3 years (2.9–15.9). Results: The Kaplan–Meier cumulative survivorship is 40% for the Pre-Osseointegrated Prosthesis for the Rehabilitation of Amputees group and 80.21% for the Post-Osseointegrated Prosthesis for the Rehabilitation of Amputees group. Five implants (28%) have been removed, three (17%) for deep infection, one (5.6%) for chronic pain, later proven to be infected and one (5.6%) due to implant fracture secondary to loosening due to infection. Two patients (11%) have peri-implant infections suppressed with oral antibiotics. Eleven cases (61%) of superficial infection were successfully treated with antibiotics. 36-Item short-form health survey and Questionnaire for persons with a Transfemoral Amputation showed significant improvements in quality of life up to 5 years after implantation. Conclusion: This small cohort of patients demonstrates osseointegrated prosthesis allows prolonged usage and improves patients’ quality of life compared to conventional prostheses. Clinical relevance These prostheses may provide a future gold standard for amputees and this study provides the first outcome data over such a time period to be reported from outside of the developers group.

Background The aim of the present study was to investigate the efficacy and tolerability of acupuncture (AC), Tanacetum (TAN) or combined treatment on quality of life in women with chronic migraine (CM). Methods A total of 69 women volunteers were randomly divided into 3 groups: AC, acupuncture administered in 20 sessions over 10 weeks (n=22); TAN, at 150 mg/day (n=23); and AC+TAN (n=23). The primary outcome was Short-Form 36 (SF-36) quality of life assessment score. Secondary outcomes included the Migraine Disability Assessment (MIDAS) and visual analogue scale (VAS) score experienced after randomisation. Results AC+TAN was statistically significantly more effective than AC or TAN alone in overall health-related quality of life (SF-36; p<0.05), on MIDAS score (−35.1 (10.6) AC vs −24.8 (11.7) TAN vs −42.5 (9.8) AC+TAN; p<0.05) and in reducing the mean score of pain on VAS (−5.6 (2.4) AC vs −3.7 (2.1) TAN vs −6.4 (3.1) AC+TAN; p<0.05). Conclusions The present work shows an improvement of the quality of life and better analgesic effect of acupuncture combined with TAN treatment on migraine pain in women when compared with acupuncture or TAN alone.

Abstract Objective: This study was performed to evaluate the impact of cured differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) on quality of life. Previous studies on quality of life in patients with DTC were hampered by small patient numbers or limited quality-of-life parameters or were uncontrolled. Design: This was a cross-sectional case-control study. Method: We assessed quality of life in 153 cured DTC patients with a median duration of cure of 6.34 yr (range 0.3–41.8) and studied the contribution of disease-specific, biochemical, and social variables, focusing on the degree of TSH suppression. Four validated health-related questionnaires were used (Short Form-36, Multidimensional Fatigue Index-20, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and Somatoform Disorder Questionnaire), including multiple aspects of physical, psychological, and social functioning. Patients were compared with 113 controls selected by patients themselves (control group I) and 336 pooled age- and gender-matched controls from other Leiden quality-of-life studies (control group II). Results: Patients had significantly decreased quality of life in 11 of 16 subscales when compared with control group I. In comparison with control group II, decreased scores in 13 of 16 items were observed. An important independent predictor for quality of life was duration of cure. Quality-of-life parameters were not influenced by serum TSH levels both measured at the time of quality-of-life assessment and measured over time since initial therapy. Conclusions: Patients cured for DTC have impaired quality of life, independently of TSH level. Quality-of-life parameters were inversely affected by duration of cure and consequently may be restored after prolonged follow-up.

Purpose. To analyze quality of life dynamics of patients with trophic venous ulcers of the lower limbs after the treatment with the use of photodynamic therapy. Materials and methods. Quality of life research was conducted in 57 patients with trophic ulcers of venous etiology. The first group included 30 patients who received standard treatment, the second group — 27 patients, in which standard treatment was combined with a course of photodynamic therapy. To assess the quality of life of the patients in both groups, a questionnaire was conducted using the EuroQol-5D-5L survey system and the visual analogue scale EQ-VAS. The quality of life assessment was carried out at the beginning of treatment, 10 days and 6 weeks after starting treatment. Results. The results indicate a significant improvement in the quality of life in both groups, but the degree of improvement in this indicator in group 2 was 20.7 % higher. An analysis of the dynamics of improvement in quality of life showed an increase in the mean of the indicator 10 days after the beginning of treatment in patients in the first group of 26.7 %, the second group by 43 %, and in 6 weeks, its increase was achieved in patients in the first group by 32.7 %, in the second group — by 53.4 %. Conclusions. The use of photodynamic therapy in the treatment of venous trophic ulcers significantly affects the quality of life, which is manifested in the anti-inflammatory effect and reduction of pain syndrome in the shorter term (by 76.2 %), compared with patients in the first group.
