Since the early days of the internet, researchers investigate in the peculiar use of language in social media. One distinctive feature is the use of emoticons as a way to express users’ emotions in digital settings. In spite of their popularity, researches on emoticons are still in its infancy. This research identifies the pragmatic and semiotic functions of emoticons in social media following qualitative and quantitative methods for analysing data. The corpus of this study are collected from Twitter and YouTube. The analysis of data follows the Three Levels Pragma-Semiotic Model. Quantitative analysis shows that the usage of emoticons with text appears to improve the expressivity and an overall sentiment scores of positive and negative opinions relatively more than the neutral opinions. It also shows that emoticons are preferably used with text or other emoticons. From the qualitative analysis, the current study has made visible the practices of using emoticons in social media.

The emergence of the Internet gave birth to a new form of language that is unique to the users of the network. Netspeak is the language of the Internet and has adapted the features of both speaking and writing, however, Netspeak has its own unique characteristics as well. This study aimed to find the emerging lexical patterns of Netspeak as used by Filipinos, the extent of use of Netspeak in three most popular social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram and Twitter) as well as various domains of pop culture (entertainment, politics, fashion and sports) and its implications to the language studies in the Philippines. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were used in this study. The corpora of the study were gathered from two months’ worth of social media activities focusing on the comments in the Facebook, Instagram and Twitter of selected public figures. The findings showed that the emerging lexical patterns of Netspeak were abbreviations and homophones and that social media platforms and pop culture domains affect the use of Netspeak features. The platform and domain that got the highest extent of usage of Netspeak lexical features were Twitter and Politics respectively. The results of this study will help in understanding the language that is used in the Internet as well as raise awareness that this kind of language exists.

This article addresses mediatization of religion which particularly focuses on how Indonesian Muslims in Hungary mediatize their Islamic practices. It is a result of an empirical study incorporating two approaches, qualitative and quantitative methods. Participant observation and semi-structured in-depth interviews involving 18 informants were conducted for collecting the quantitative data whereas the quantitative data was generated from an online survey collected from 102 participants (60 males and 42 females). The result of the study shows that the lack of integration to the local Islamic institutions affects the mediatization of Islam. The form of Islamic mediatization can be seen through their way of obtaining religious messages, news, and information which primarily relies on the internet. Most of them depend on Social media, where YouTube channel was the most favorite one followed by Facebook and Instagram,  to obtain Islamic resources. The dependency upon media particularly YouTube has the potential to shift religious authority from institutional to individual authority. While some scholars debate whether mediatization of religion could encourage secularization or not, the case of Indonesian Muslims in the Hungarian context shows that instead of becoming more secular, the dependency upon media for religious practices affects them to be more religious.

ABSTRACTSociety has been transforming throughout the last years. The easy access to Internet has made two important institutions, family and school, cope to new challenges. Teenagers in different countries have access to Internet. However, understanding how these changes affect them, their families, their education, their community and the risks they cope help us get to empiric research. The main inquiry is to identify the use and the role parents have around the Internet and technological devices. The research is based in a mixed approach, combining qualitative and quantitative methods, using a questionnaire and a focus group to collect data.RESUMENLa sociedad ha venido transformándose durante las últimas décadas. El fácil acceso al Internet ha hecho que dos importantes instituciones, la familia y la escuela, se enfrenten a nuevos retos. En distintos países alrededor del mundo, los adolescentes tienen acceso al Internet. Sin embargo, para entender como estos cambios los afecta a ellos, a sus familias, a su educación, a su comunidad y los riesgos que enfrentan, es posible llevar a cabo la investigación empírica. La pregunta central es conocer el uso y el rol que tienen los padres en torno al Internet y a los dispositivos tecnológicos. Como parte de la metodología, la construcción del objeto de estudio se basa en la implementación de un enfoque mixto. As a representative of the flourishing development of the internet, social media is a critical platform for user-generated content (UGC). This study investigated the relationship between social presence and UGC through qualitative and quantitative methods. Social presence and user value were divided into three dimensions to comprehensively analyze how sensory, affective, and cognitive social presence produces emotional, social, and functional user value, thereby driving the formulation of UGC. Empirical research was carried out incorporating the moderating effect of perceived risk.

SummaryThe study identifies the factors that influence marketing through social media of users in the Vietnam market, conducted through qualitative and quantitative methods. The research results show that Intention to use social media marketing is directly affected by Attitude towards advertisement and Attitude to electronic words of mouth. Additionally, perceived usefulness, Search Level and Perceived risk are factors that directly affect Attitude towards advertisement. Whereas, material condition and perceived usefulness are factors that affect Attitudes towards electronic words of mouth. This study also provides some implications for marketers through social networks to increase the confidence and effectiveness of marketing campaigns and programs through this channel.

Viagra is a popular topic in spam, but contrary to Pfizer's official marketing of Viagra, little attention has been directed at how the content of spam plays into gendered discourse on masculinity and men's sexual performances. This is not surprising, if we consider how spam is mostly treated as a nuisance to digital infrastructures. Yet, studies have demonstrated how spammers build on, reflect and transmit gender ideologies (e.g. Mullany 2004 ; Paasonen 2009 ; Yu 2014 ). In the present paper, we contribute insights to the existing studies on Viagra and spam, as we examine how spammers promote Viagra and other sexuopharmaceuticals. Taking our point of departure in an online spam archive ( Guenter 2010 ), we combine qualitative and quantitative methods to analyse the textual content of spam emails. Using TagSpheres models, we have produced an overview of the most frequent and relevant terms in spam which we further subject to a qualitative analysis. Drawing on Sara Ahmed (2004) , we engage in an affective reading of selected spam emails, generated by randomised samples. In the analysis, we argue that spammers attempt to move possible consumers away from official and legal sale methods by emphasising shame and anxiety related to procuring Viagra and other sexuopharmaceuticals. While shame moves the consumer away from legal sale methods, anxiety is invoked to encourage the possible consumer to envision a hypermasculine future, in which virility is everlasting. We further discuss our findings in relation to masculinity, arguing that spammers capitalise on existing communication- and pharmaceutical technologies, whilst taking gendered discourse in advertising to their ‘functional extremes’ ( Brunton 2019 : xiv).

ABSTRACTThis study is an assessment about the uses, attitudes, habits, skills and behavior towards ICT by young students from public high Sonora (Mexico). It also measures the knowledge of young people about the risks, their reaction to them and habits or adopting safety measures in their use of ICT. To prepare the study we used a mixed methodology based on a combination of qualitative and quantitative techniques. Quantitative analysis looked at the implementation of surveys 3,031 students between 12 and 15 years. The qualitative analysis, meanwhile, included 66 in-depth interviews and seven focus groups with students and parents. The study aims to emphasize not only the evidence that account uses, consumption and current skills of young people to the Internet but to explain what might be, in any case, the potential and opportunities that certain screens and smart devices generated in the building interactive relationships and, therefore, its own identity.RESUMENEl presente estudio constituye un diagnóstico a cerca de los usos, actitudes, hábitos, competencias y comporta-mientos frente a las TIC por parte de los jóvenes estudiantes de secundarias públicas en Sonora (México). También mide el conocimiento de los jóvenes a cerca de los riesgos, su reacción ante los mismos y los hábitos o medidas de seguridad que adoptan en su utilización de las TIC. Para la elaboración del estudio se ha utilizado una metodología mixta, basada en una combinación de técnicas cualitativas y cuantitativas. El análisis cuantitativo contempló la aplicación de 3,031 encuestas a alumnos de entre 12 y 15 años. El análisis cualitativo, por su parte, incluyó 66 entrevistas a profundidad y siete grupos focales con alumnos y padres. Background: Ciwujia injection, prepared from water extraction of Acanthopanax senticosus, is widely used for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases in the clinic in China. The ingredients of the preparation are still not efficiently clear and its quality control method requires further improvement. </P><P> Objective: In this paper, the qualitative and quantitative methods for quality control of Ciwujia injection were originally developed by a combination of HPLC-Q-TOF-MS, HPLC-TQ-MS/MS and UPLCPDA. Methods: With HPLC-Q-TOF-MS and HPLC-TQ-MS/MS, compounds were identified firstly by comparison of their MS spectra and retention times with those of standards or recorded information in the literature. Further, a new UPLC-PDA method was originally established to simultaneously determine the multiple ingredients in the preparations. Results: For qualitative analysis, 22 compounds were identified by the presented method. For quantitative analysis, the validated method exhibited good linearity (R2 > 0.998), repeatability (RSD < 1.50%), intra- and inter-day precisions (RSD < 8.33%) and recoveries (95.93-108.58%) for the simultaneous determination of the active ingredients, including protocatechuic acid-3-glucoside, l-phenylalanine, protocatechuic acid, neochlorogenic acid, chlorogenic acid, gentiopicroside, eleutheroside B, and cryptochlorogenic acid, and was successfully utilized to analyze the eight compounds in 4 batches of Ciwujia injection. Conclusion: The presented method is simple and rapid for quality control of Ciwujia injection, and could provide a useful reference for the quality control and routine analysis of others Ciwujia preparations.

This article attempts to examine the highest tier of elite tennis through a technological lens in order to understand the several imbrications of tennis and technology in Grand Slam events. Using qualitative and quantitative methods, this article studies the version of tennis that exists today—replete with RFID chips, screen interfaces, more powerful racquets than ever before and the ubiquity of social media. As the relationship between players and fans, organisers and visitors, and even gameplay and umpiring have evolved to allow the use of several technologies, Grand Slam tennis has embraced the era of social media and technologically mediated sport. This article views this transformation through the lens of Science Technology and Society in order to better understand the influence that technologies have in shaping the relationships between spectators, players, matches, tournaments and indeed the sport itself.
