India is witnessing rapid growth of elderly population. The population aged 60 years or older is projected to climb from 9% in 2015 to 19% in 2050 and to 32% in 2100 (UN, 2017). Aging population requires attention on their physical, social and emotional well-being. Wellbeing encompasses multiple interactive components which are beyond the conventional issues of health and diseases. There is multitude of social relationships and dynamics of social roles that women in this age negotiate in their lives. Family dynamics, compatibility with partner, household headship, decision making and level of autonomy, incidences of domestic violence, security concerns, care-giving, perceptions of self, societal status do influence quality of life and wellbeing. Using primary survey data of 165 women aged 60 to 65 years residing in urban areas in Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) interviewed during first quarter of 2018, the paper attempts to understand what does well-being mean to them, how do they ensure it, what are the psycho-social barriers and how do they overcome them. Purposive sampling and snowballing techniques has been employed to identify these women. Increase in health related problems especially mobility issues, lifestyle diseases along with depression were predominant in this age. For women in post 60 years of age, respect and appreciation from family and society is vital to ensure their happiness, while family bonding and overall contentment stands out for ensuring wellbeing. Religious pursuits and social interaction are the fundamental coping mechanisms from stress. Inadequate and incomplete education and early marriage rooted in patriarchy and financial dependence are the principal sources of regret in lives of these women. Widowed women were identified as the most vulnerable. Women in the lowest income group and literacy level were further marginalized and needed help from state. Evident gaps were reported in the existing welfare government schemes for this age.

Young Females Usually Migrate From The Northern Part Of Ghana To The South To Engage In Head Porting Business. However, The High Cost Of Rent In Urban Areas And The Poor Environmental Conditions Of Poor Urbanites Have Exposed Head Porters To Bad Conditions With Varying Implications On Health And Well-Being. This Study Examines The Health-Related Conditions Of Female Head Porters In Kumasi Through Stakeholders’ Opinions. The Study Used Quantitative Methods In Eliciting Information From Female Head-Porters In Asokore Mampong, Kumasi. In All, 100 Respondents; Comprising Relatives Of Female Head Porters And Other Opinion Leaders Such As The Assembly Member, Imam, Pastor, Teachers From Northern Ghana, Were Interviewed Through Self-Administered Questionnaires. Data Were Analyzed Using A Statistical Package For The Social Sciences (SPSS) And Excel. Economic Reasons Remain Topical For The Migration Of Females From The North To The South To Engage In Head Porting. While Many Of These Migrants Do Not Return Home, Leading To The Emergence Of Migrant Settlements In Kumasi, Others Return To Support Their Families With Their Earnings. Stakeholders Argued That Skills Development And Creating Of Entrepreneurial Ventures Are Necessary To Reduce The North-South Migratory Patterns. The Migration Of Females From The North To The South In Search Of Greener Pastures Is Likely To Continue As A Result Of Opportunity Gaps. However, Worsening Conditions Of Living May Deteriorate The Health Conditions Of Some Of The Migrants. Stakeholders Recommend A New Wave Of Solutions With Focus On Skills Development, Job Creation, And Entrepreneurial Training As Solutions.

The study evaluated the constraints of maternal health in reproductive age in the rural Bangladesh. The study used qualitative approach to gather information where individual in-depth interviews adopted for data collection among women aged 15-49 years old. The overall study revealed that rural women faced many maternal health related complications and problems in their reproductive age such as hemorrhage, sepsis, hypertensive diseases of pregnancy, obstructed labour and complications of abortion, etc. Maternal health situation still in rural areas was not developed in comparison to the situation of urban areas of Bangladesh and there was not available women’s health care accesses for their emergency; low education level, low per capita income, many family members, early marriage and pregnancy, number of pregnancies, poor nutrition and lack of family support status resulted in low status of maternal and child health in the rural areas of Bangladesh. Adequate measures should be taken for providing proper health care services in rural areas of Bangladesh for better maternal health status.Mediscope Vol. 3, No. 2: July 2016, Pages 1-10

The world’s population is aging and becoming more urbanized. Public space in urban areas is vital for improving the health of the elderly by stimulating social interaction. Many urban design projects are advertised as age-friendly but ignore the real needs of the elderly, especially elderly women, for social interaction in urban public spaces. Insufficient attention is paid to the physical and psychological characteristics of elderly women when shaping public space. This analysis addresses the question: What are the qualities of urban spaces which facilitate health-improving social interaction for elderly women? Methods include a case study in Beijing, field investigation, mapping, and qualitative and quantitative analysis. The survey was carried out in April 2021, and concerned 240 women aged 55–75 years. Results indicate that the social interactions of older women relate to both their physical and psychological situations. Public spaces can positively impact the psychological well-being and social participation of elderly women. Conclusions include insights regarding the relationship between social interaction and well-being among elderly women, as well as proposing a series of principles for shaping public spaces for an age-friendly urban environment.

Purpose Cookies were not generally viewed as functional contributors to well-being as they are primarily perceived as confectionery products. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the potential of flaxseed-enriched cookies as carriers of lignans and omega-3 fatty acids – functional compounds that are lacking in the western diet. Design/methodology/approach An online questionnaire collected data from Croatian consumers (n=1,035). The majority of the samples were women (73 per cent) in the age range 15-65 years (97 per cent). Most participants were employed, had a higher education degree, and lived in urban areas. Questions examined the consumption of cookies and flaxseed, interest for functional cookies, nutritional knowledge, and awareness. Findings Majority of subjects consumed cookies (93 per cent), while 61 per cent did not eat flaxseed or ate it less than once a month. The consumers showed elevated interest for the functional cookies with flaxseed, among which elderly women with higher nutrition awareness, and nutrition knowledge were the most interested. Functional cookies with flaxseed could be used for delivery of lignans and omega-3 fatty acids in everyday diet, but in order to reach wider range of consumers producers might benefit from employing nutritional educational marketing campaigns. Originality/value Data from the study decreased scarcity of information on consumer behaviour related to flaxseed consumption and on potential use of cookies as a functional food. Reported findings will be useful to dieticians, food industry, and food researchers in countries with a high prevalence of cookie consumption.

Background: The needs of caregivers of children with disability may not be recognized despite evidence to suggest that they experience increased strain because of their care-giving role. This strain may be exacerbated if they live in under-resourced areas. Objectives: We set out to establish the well-being of caregivers of children with Cerebral Palsy (CP) living in high-density areas of Harare, Zimbabwe. In addition, we wished to identify factors that might be predictive of caregivers’ well-being. Finally, we examined the psychometric properties of the Caregiver Strain Index (CSI) within the context of the study.Method: Caregivers of 46 children with CP were assessed twice, at baseline, and after three months, for perceived burden of care and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) using CSI and EQ-5D respectively. The psychometric properties of the CSI were assessed post hoc. Results: The caregivers reported considerable caregiver burden with half of the caregivers reporting CSI scores in the ‘clinical distress’ range. Many of the caregivers experienced some form of pain, depression and expressed that they were overwhelmed by the care-giving role. No variable was found to be associated with clinical distress. The CSI demonstrated good overall internal consistency (Cronbach’s Alpha = 0.8), stability over time (Z = 0.87, p = 0.381) and was significantly and negatively correlated with the EQ-5D VAS (Spearman’s rho = −0.33, p = 0.027), demonstrating concurrent validity. Conclusion: Caregivers must be monitored routinely for their level of distress and there is an urgent need to provide them with support. The CSI is likely to be a valid measure of distress in this population.

Current research on feeding outcomes after discharge from the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) suggests a need to critically look at the early underpinnings of persistent feeding problems in extremely preterm infants. Concepts of dynamic systems theory and sensitive care-giving are used to describe the specialized needs of this fragile population related to the emergence of safe and successful feeding and swallowing. Focusing on the infant as a co-regulatory partner and embracing a framework of an infant-driven, versus volume-driven, feeding approach are highlighted as best supporting the preterm infant's developmental strivings and long-term well-being.

Abstract. Most research in health psychology is based on retrospective self reports, which are distorted by recall biases and have low ecological validity. To overcome such limitations we developed computer assisted diary approaches to assess health related behaviours in individuals’, couples’ and families’ daily life. The event- and time-sampling-based instruments serve to assess appraisals of the current situation, feelings of physical discomfort, current emotional states, conflict and emotion regulation in daily life. They have proved sufficient reliability and validity in the context of individual, couple and family research with respect to issues like emotion regulation and health. As examples: Regarding symptom reporting curvilinear pattern of frequencies over the day could be identified by parents and adolescents; or psychological well-being is associated with lower variability in basic affect dimensions. In addition, we report on preventive studies to improve parental skills and enhance their empathic competences towards their baby, and towards their partner.
