Dietary Supplement Usage, Associated Knowledge and Attitudes of Sri Lankan National-Level Athletes: A Cross Sectional Study

Purpose: This study aimed to identify dietary supplement prevalence, reasons to use, supplement types, personal beliefs, knowledge and practices of athletes related to supplement use and doping in sports. Methods: Data was collected from 386 athletes (Male; 66.8%, Female; 33.2%, Mean age ±SD; 26.22±4.9), represented national pools of 12 sport types. Results: 354 (91.5%) of athletes used supplements including multivitamin (57%), electrolyte (49.7%), protein (43.5%), calcium (19.7%) and creatine (17.4%). Gender, social status, education and profession were not found to be determinants of supplement use, but sport type did (p < 0.05). Rugby and weightlifting players showed significant protein, multivitamin and creatine use per day (p < 0.05). Many athletes consumed supplements to boost their performance (41.8%) and strength (54. 5%). The majority (60.5%) claimed about self-decided supplementation plan. Male athletes had more dope-positive attitudes than females (P<0.05). Athletes who attended anti-doping educational workshops/were exposed to international competitions were more concerned about supplement content (p <0.05). A considerable number of multivitamin (51.8%), creatine (37.3%) and protein (14.8%) users consumed them without any scientific basis. Conclusions: Dietary supplements appear to be widely consumed by Sri Lankan national-level athletes, whereas a considerable proportion does not follow proper nutritional assessment before use.

Dietary supplement use is increasing globally, especially among children. However, few studies have been conducted to examine dietary supplement use among Chinese children. The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence of dietary supplement use and the associated factors in primary school students. A cross-sectional study was conducted in four primary schools in Hunan province, China. A total of 706 Chinese parents/caregivers of school children aged 6–12 years old were enrolled. Self-administrated questionnaires were used to collect information about the children’s dietary supplement use, and their socio-demographic characteristics. The prevalence of dietary supplement use in primary school students was 20.4%. Calcium (16.7%), vitamin C (9.2%), and vitamin D (8.5%) were the most commonly used types of dietary supplement. The main reasons for parents/caregivers to purchase dietary supplements for their children were immunity improvement (43.6%), and for growth promotion (36.5%). Some caregivers (26.4%) purchased dietary supplements online, including from dubious or unknown sellers. However, 37.5% of caregivers did not receive formal guidance on supplementation even if they purchased their supplements through formal channels. Parents/caregivers were unclear about the appropriate choices for children’s dietary supplement use. Guidelines and counseling regarding dietary supplements for children may be helpful in public health work.

Abstract Objective: To date, there have been few studies on dietary supplement (DS) use in Korean children and adolescents, using nationally representative data. This study aimed to investigate the current status of DS use and its related factors, among Korean children and adolescents from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) data. Design: A cross-sectional study. Setting: Data from the KNHANES 2015–2017. Participants completed 24-h dietary recall interviews, including DS products that the subjects consumed. Participants: The study population was 4380 children and adolescents aged 1–18 years. Results: Approximately 2013 % of children and adolescents were using DS; the highest use was among children aged 1–3 years old, and the lowest use was among adolescents aged 16–18 years. The most frequently used DS was prebiotics/probiotics, followed by multivitamin/mineral supplements. Factors that were associated with DS use were lower birth weight in children aged <4 years; younger age, higher household income, regular breakfast intake and lower BMI in children aged 4–9 years; and regular breakfast intake and use of nutrition facts label in adolescents aged 10–18 years. Feeding patterns in infancy and having chronic diseases were not associated with DS use. Conclusions: We report that over 20 % of children and adolescents use DS. Nutritional education for parents and children about proper DS consumption is needed.

Abstract. As a follow-up to an earlier study demonstrating healthier cardiometabolic profiles among long-term multiple dietary supplement (LTMDS) users, we examined if cardiometabolic health benefits associated with LTMDS use persisted with aging. The study is based on LTMDS users from North America and 2007–2010 NHANES participants who were used for comparison to the LTMDS users. NHANES subjects were classified as non-dietary supplement (NS) users, single supplement/single purpose supplement (SS) users, multivitamin/mineral supplement (MVMS) users, and multiple dietary supplement (MDS) users. Supplement groups were compared for total, HDL and LDL cholesterol; triglycerides; glucose; insulin; CRP and HbA1c ≥ 6.5%, adjusting for age, sex, income, education, BMI, history of CVD, and medications for hypercholesterolemia and diabetes. Geometric mean (95% confidence interval) LDL cholesterol was significantly lower (P < 0.05) for all supplement groups (SS: 110 (104–117) mg/dL; MVMS: 113 (107–119) mg/dL; MDS: 115 (111–118) mg/dL; LTMDS: 112 (105, 119) mg/dL) compared with the NS users (122 (118–126) mg/dL). Compared with the NS group, MDS users had significantly (P < 0.05) lower mean total cholesterol (198 (194–201) vs 201 (197, 206) mg/dL), MDS and LTMDS users higher mean HDL cholesterol (54.2 (53.3–55.1) and 60.0 (57.4, 62.7) mg/dL vs 52.0 (50.8–53.3) mg/dL), LTMDS users lower fasting glucose (100 (98–103) vs 105 (103–106) mg/dL), SS and MDS users lower insulin (8.4 (7.4–9.6) and 9.1 (8.3–9.9) vs 10.2 (9.4–11.1) μIU/mL), and MDS users lower CRP (% ≥ 1.5 mg/L, 50.8 (47.9–53.6) vs 57.0 (52.4–61.6) %). These findings add to the evidence that use of dietary supplements may provide cardiometabolic health benefits.

Abstract Background: The use of dietary supplements without adequate knowledge regarding their constituents places professional athletes at great risk due to possibility of being positive in dope testing. The aim of this study was to identify the dietary supplements usage patterns among elite athletes in various sport types and investigate their knowledge and attitudes regarding that.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in which a self -administered anonymous questionnaire was used to collect data from 387 elite athletes participating in individual (athletics, karate, weightlifting, wrestling and shooting), team (cricket, volleyball, netball, rugby, football, kabaddi and hockey) and both (wushu and badminton) sports. The data were analysed using nonparametric tests; Pearson’s chi square test with the level of significant of p < 0.05.Results: Out of 387 athletes, 354 (91.5%) used dietary supplements, multivitamin (57%), electrolyte (49.7%), protein (43.5%), calcium (19.7%) and creatine (17.4%) as the most prevalent types. Gender, social status, educational level, and professionalism had no impact with the supplement use whereas the type of sport played showed a significant impact on supplement intake (p < 0.05), with athletes in netball, rugby, wrestling, badminton and shooting showed 100% usage. Vitamin, protein and creatine usage were high among rugby, netball and weightlifting players (p < 0.05). The majority of athletes consume supplements to improve their performance (41.8%) and energy (54. 5%). Further,60.5% of the athletes claimed on self-prescription without medical advice. Two perceptions of, supplements are essential for maintain fitness and win awards were significantly high in males (p <0.05). Athletes having participated in educational workshops and competed internationally showed significant concern about the contamination risk associated with supplements (p < 0.05). Rugby, weightlifting and netball players showed significant multiple supplement usage among others (p <0.05).Conclusion: This study confirms that dietary supplements are readily used by Sri Lankan elite athletes, while multivitamins, protein and energy drink products are preferred. Additionally, the majority of athletes engaged in supplement use with the aim of performance enhancement and increase energy. Nature of sport played was a determinant factor of net supplement usage while higher multiple supplement usage appeared among intensive sports.

Background: Dietary supplement use received wide attention and interest throughout the world, particularly in Gulf countries, because of advanced economic and industrial growth. Objective: The present study aimed to determine the prevalence and correlates of dietary supplement use among medical students at Jouf University, Saudi Arabia. Methods: For this cross-sectional study, an anonymous self-administered structured questionnaire was distributed among medical students at Jouf University, Saudi Arabia. Out of the 381 medical students, 366 answered the questionnaire with a response rate of 96%. Analysis of data was done using the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) program, version 24. Statistical significance was considered at P values <0.05. Results: Regarding the prevalence of dietary supplement use, 36.3% (n=133) and 29.5% (n=108) of the respondents were previous and current users of dietary supplements, respectively. Multivitamins and vitamin D were the most prevalent dietary supplements used by the participants. The students reported that the internet was the main source of knowledge concerning dietary supplements. The significant predictors of dietary supplement use in the logistic regression analysis were: age >21 years (odds ratio (OR): 3.26; confidence interval (CI): 1.67-10.53), females sex (odds ratio (OR): 2.23; confidence interval (CI): 2.34-6.84), and being in the third academic year or more (odds ratio (OR): 2.58; confidence interval (CI): 1.82-5.37). The most reported reasons for utilizing dietary supplements were nutritional supplementation and health promotion. Nearly three-quarters of the students agreed that dietary supplementation is good for health and recommended others to use them after doctor recommendation. Conclusion: Dietary supplement use was remarkably high among medical students at Jouf University, Saudi Arabia. Consumption of dietary supplements increased significantly among older students, females, and those in the third academic year or more. This study recommends other studies involving students from non-health domain colleges to detect if there is a difference in the prevalence of dietary supplement use within this population.

Intake of dietary supplements is widespread among athletes in developed countries. This study evaluated the use of dietary supplements in athletes from a developing country. Dietary supplementation practices of 113 national-level athletes age 15–35 yr in Sri Lanka were assessed. All athletes from track-and-field, badminton, football, swimming, cycling, and karate squads who consented to participate in the study were administered an anonymous questionnaire by an interviewer. Information on number of supplements taken, frequency of use, nature of product, rationale, sources of advice, and reasons for taking supplements was obtained. Most athletes (94%) consumed dietary supplements. On average, 3.7 products/day were consumed. Footballers had significantly lower intake of supplements than other athletes (footballers 71%, others 98%; p < .05). They also consumed fewer products per day (footballers 0.7, others 3.5; p < .05). Popular supplements included multivitamins, vitamin E, calcium, energy foods and drinks, and creatine. Multiple supplement use was common, with 29% athletes taking 4 products/day. The athletes sought advice on supplement use from sports doctors (45%), team coaches (40%), or friends (15%). Most took supplements to improve performance (79%), and 19% claimed to take supplements to improve their overall health status. Dietary supplement use is widespread among national-level Sri Lankan athletes. The ad hoc use of supplements indicates that educational intervention in the sporting community is essential.

Current dietary supplement (DS) use among Saudi school students is not well described. In this study, we aim to investigate the prevalence and predictors of DS use among adolescents. This cross-sectional study collected data via self-administered questionnaire from 1221 students (12 to 18 years). The overall prevalence of DS use was 26.2%, significantly higher in females than males (33% vs. 17.9%, p < 0.001). High proportion of female DS users demonstrated normal BMI than males (84% vs. 56.5%, p < 0.001). High percentage of male DS users were engaged in vigorous and/or high physical activity (PA) levels than female DS users (58.2% vs. 43%, p = 0.022; and 57.1% vs. 20.7%, p < 0.001, respectively). The main reasons for DS use among females were vitamin deficiency (63.3%), hair condition (37.6%) and nail health (23.5%) while in males, the main reasons were vitamin deficiency (58.4%) and body building (34.4%). The predictors of DS use in Saudi adolescents included being female, having high family income and being physically active. In conclusion, the overall prevalence and preference of DS use, though low among Saudi adolescents, was driven mostly by gender, physical activity levels and socioeconomic factors like family income. DS use guidelines and counselling among Saudi adolescents are warranted to improve public health.
