Polyethersulfone/zinc oxide mixed matrix hollow fiber membrane was fabricated using dry/wet phase inversion method. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (2 wt.%) were dispersed in N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc) solvent in the present of polyvinylepyrrolidene. The dope solution speed and take up speed was similar with performing the spinning process at room temperature. The produced membranes were characterized using scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis. Membrane performance was evaluated using pure water flux (PWF), relative flux ration (RFR), and total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiency. From SEM analysis, it was found that the nanoparticles were well dispersed in the polymeric matrix. From AFM results, it was observed that the modified membrane has higher surface roughness. The PWF of the modified membrane was enhanced, while the RFR showed to increase due to rougher membrane surface. The NOM remaoval of PES/ZnO membrane was higher than that of PES membrane and reached to 27% compared to only 16.9 % for pristine PES.

Polyethersulfone (PES) hollow fiber membranes have been widely used in many fields, such as ultrafiltration, microfiltration, reverse osmosis, liquid/liquid or liquid/solid separation, gas separation, hemodialysis, and so on. In this paper, the sheet PES hollow fiber membranes were prepared. The morphology and performance of membranes can be controlled. By studying the influence of the compositions and conditions on the morphology and performance of PES hollow fiber membrane, the relationship of morphology and performance of the membrane is acquired. The additives were used such as glycerol, BuOH and PEG. In addition, immerse phase inversion was used as membranes preparation method. The morphology of the membrane was controlled by changing kinds of additive, concentration of additive and so on. It was found that the membrane morphologies were changed by additive obviously. Porosity , pure water flux, scanning electron microscopy(SEM) were used to characterize the morphology and performance of the membranes.

Nanocrystalline cellulose was used to blend with polysulfone to improve the hydrophicility and mechanical properties of PS hollow fiber ultrafiltration membrane. The method of dry-jet/wet-spining was adopted to form the hollow fiber by the mechanism of phase-inversion. In addition, the content of NCC was increased gradually from 0% to 1 wt% to examin the permeation flux, rejection ratio of bovine serum albumin(BSA) and mechanical strength of PS hollow-fiber. We find that the pure water flux was soared when NCC content was increased. The tensile strength and elongation at break were also detected and calculated. The results indicated that the properties of PS hollow-fiber membrane with appropriate NCC content were enhanced. The hollow fiber membranes were also observed with scaning electron microscopy(SEM) to explore the porous structure

Abstract Wetting and fouling have significantly affected the application of membrane distillation (MD). In this work, a dip-coating method was used for improving surface hydrophobicity of the polyetherimide (PEI) hollow fiber membrane. An air gap membrane distillation (AGMD) process was applied for treatment of the methylene blue (MB) solution. The porous PEI membrane was fabricated by a dry-wet spinning process and the hydrophobic 2-(Perfluoroalkyl) ethanol (Zonyl® BA) was used as the coating material. From FESEM, the modified PEI-Zonyl membrane showed an open structure with large finger-like cavities. The modified membrane displayed a narrow pore size distribution with mean pore size of 0.028 μm. The outer surface contact angle of the PEI-Zonly membrane increased from 81.3° to 100.4° due to the formation of an ultra-thin coated layer. The pure water flux of the PEI-Zonyl membrane was slightly reduced compared to the pristine PEI membrane. The permeate flux of 6.5 kg/m2 h and MB rejection of 98% was found for the PEI-Zonyl membrane during 76 h of the AGMD operation. Adsorption of MB on the membrane surface was confirmed based on the Langmuir isotherm evaluation, AFM and FESM analysis. The modified PEI-Zonyl membrane can be a favorable alternative for AGMD of dyeing wastewaters.

Hydrophilic poly((poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate) (P(PEGMA)) brushes were grafted from chloromethylated polyethersulfone (CMPES) hollow fiber membrane surface by surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization(SI-ATRP) to improve the membrane’s hydrophilic property. The CMPES hollow fiber membrane was prepared by phase inversion process. The benzyl chloride groups on the CMPES membrane surface could afford effective macroinitiators for grafting the well-defined polymer brushes. Attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy confirmed the grafting of P (PEGMA) chains. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) was used to characterize the surface morphology of the CMPES membrane and modified membrane. The grafting yield of P (PEGMA) was determined by weight gain measurement. The results showed that the number-average molecular weight (Mn) of P (PEGMA) increased with the polymerization time. It was found that the grafting of P (PEGMA) brought higher pure water flux, improved water uptake ratio and better anti-protein absorption ability to CMPES membrane after modification.

Membranes for use in high gas exchange lung applications are riddled with fouling. The goal of this research is to create a membrane that can function in an artificial lung until the actual lung becomes available for the patient. The design of the artificial lung is based on new hollow fiber membranes (HFMs), due to which the current devices have short and limited periods of low fouling. By successfully modifying membranes with attached peptoids, low fouling can be achieved for longer periods of time. Hydrophilic modification of porous polysulfone (PSF) membranes can be achieved gradually by polydopamine (PSU-PDA) and peptoid (PSU-PDA-NMEG5). Polysulfone (PSU-BSA-35Mg), polysulfone polydopamine (PSUPDA-BSA-35Mg) and polysulfone polydopamine peptoid (PSU-PDA-NMEG5-BSA35Mg) were tested by potting into the new design of gas exchange modules. Both surfaces of the modified membranes were found to be highly resistant to protein fouling permanently. The use of different peptoids can facilitate optimization of the low fouling on the membrane surface, thereby allowing membranes to be run for significantly longer time periods than has been currently achieved.

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) has outstanding properties such as high thermal stability, resistance to acid solvents and good mechanical strength. Due to its properties, PVDF is widely used as a membrane matrix. However, PVDF membrane is hydrophobic properties, so as for specific applications, the surface of membrane needs to be modified to become hydrophilic. This research aims to modify PVDF membrane surface with chitosan and glutaraldehyde as a crosslinker agent. The FTIR spectra showed that the modified membrane has a peak at 1655 cm-1, indicating the imine group (–N=C)- that was formed due to the crosslink between amine group from chitosan and aldehyde group from glutaraldehyde. Results showed that the contact angle of the modified membrane decreases to 77.22° indicated that the membrane hydrophilic properties (< 90°) were enhanced. Prior to the modification, the contact angle of the PVDF membrane was 90.24°, which shows hydrophobic properties (> 90°). The results of porosity, Ɛ (%) for unmodified PVDF membrane was 55.39%, while the modified PVDF membrane has a porosity of 81.99%. Similarly, by modifying the PVDF membrane, pure water flux increased from 0.9867 L/m2h to 1.1253 L/m2h. The enhancement of porosity and pure water flux for the modified PVDF membrane was due to the improved surface hydrophilicity of PVDF membrane.

Hollow fiber membrane (HFM) modules are among the most common separation devices employed in membrane separation applications. Three-dimensional steady-state computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are carried out to study flow past hollow fiber membrane banks (HFMB). The current study investigates the effects of flow behavior on membrane performance during binary mixture separations. Carbon dioxide (CO2) removal from methane (CH4) is examined for various arrangements of HFMs in staggered and inline configurations. The common HFM module arrangement is the axial flow configuration. However, this work focuses on the radial cross-flow configuration. The HFM surface is a functional boundary where the suction rate and concentration of each species are coupled and are functions of the local partial pressures, the permeability, and the selectivity of the HFM. CFD simulations employed the turbulent k–ω shear stress transport (SST) model to study HFM performance for Reynolds numbers, 200 ≤ Re ≤ 1000. The efficiency of the inline and staggered arrangements in the separation module is evaluated by the coefficient of performance and the rate of mass flow per unit area of CO2 passing across the membrane surface. This work demonstrates that the module with staggered arrangement outperforms the module with the inline arrangement.

The efforts to improve the stability of membrane filtration in applications for wastewater treatment or the purification of drinking water still dominate the research in the field of membrane technology. Various factors that cause membrane fouling have been explored to find the solution for improving the stability of the filtration and prolong membrane lifetime. The present work explains the filtration performance of a hollow fiber membrane that is fabricated from polyethersulfone-2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl phosphorylchloline while using a sodium alginate (SA) feed solution. The filtration process is designed in a pressure driven cross-flow module using a single piece hollow fiber membrane in a flow of outside-inside We investigate the effect of Ca and Mg ions in SA solution on the relative permeability, membrane resistance, cake resistance, and cake formation on the membrane surface. Furthermore, the performance of membrane filtration is predicted while using mathematical models that were developed based on Darcy’s law. Results show that the presence of Ca ions in SA solution has the most prominent effect on the formation of a cake layer. The formed cake layer has a significant effect in lowering relative permeability. The developed models have a good fit with the experimental data for pure water filtration with R2 values between 0.9200 and 0.9999. When treating SA solutions, the developed models fit well with experimental with the best model (Model I) shows R2 of 0.9998, 0.9999, and 0.9994 for SA, SA + Ca, and SA + Mg feeds, respectively.

Mixtures of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) containing hydrophilic ultrafiltration membranes were prepared by adding PVA (5 to 30%) to PVDF by the phase inversion method. The hydrophilic contact angle (CA), equilibrium water content, pure water flux and bovine serum albumin retention were studied to assess the membrane performance. The anti-fouling performance of modified membrane to the secondary treated water was evaluated by flux decline, washing recovery rate and fouling resistance analysis. Scanning electron microscopy showed that the cross-section structure of the membranes had finger-like pores, which were well developed and uniformly distributed, and the sub-layer structure was looser and more porous with the increasing content of PVA. The CA gradually decreased. The steady flux was 800 L/m2 h from P15 to P30, and the BSA retention sharply declined. The ultrafiltration tests for secondary treated water indicated that the main fouling source of the modified membrane was the concentration polarization and cake layer resistance. After physical flushing, the flux recovery ratio of the membrane could reach 100% when the PVA content was 5–15%, which shows excellent anti-pollution performance and good prospects for use in processing wastewater from urban sewage.

Poly (vinyl chloride) /poly (acrylonitrile) (PVC/PAN) hollow fiber membrane was prepared by phase inversion method and it was hydrolyzed in different NaOH solution concentration. After hydrolysis modified, the change of surface characteristic of the PVC/PAN hollow fiber membrane was described by Fourier transform infrared attenuated total reflection spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR) and water contact angle. Morphological structures of membranes were observed by field-emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). Protein filtration was employed to evaluate the antifouling performance of the membrane. All these results demonstrated that PVC/PAN hollow fiber membrane modified by hydrolysis showed high permeation flux, good hydrophilicity and antifouling.
