La depresión en el embarazo es un problema creciente atribuible a la variabilidad biológica y a aspectos psicosociales como la percepción de vinculación parental y las habilidades emocionales autopercibidas, no obstante estas últimas presentan poca evidencia empírica, siendo variables aún poco exploradas. El objetivo de esta investigación fue determinar la relación entre la depresión, inteligencia emocional percibida y percepción de cuidados parentales en embarazadas. Los resultados indican que la percepción de una alta atención emocional, baja claridad emocional y baja regulación emocional, además de la percepción de las embarazadas de haber sido sobreprotegida por su padre, evidencian correlaciones con la depresión en el embarazo. Esto permite proponer la hipótesis vinculada a que la inteligencia emocional percibida como la reconstrucción de las experiencias vinculares tempranas podrían actuar como factores protectores, tendientes a disminuir la depresión en el embarazo, no obstante esto habría que corroborarlo con nuevos estudios en muestras mayores y con análisis más complejos. Depression in pregnancy is attributable to biological variability and psychosocial aspects such as perception of parental bonding and emotional skills self-perceived growing problem, however the latter have little empirical evidence, being variables still little explored. The objective of this research was to determine the relationship between depression, perceived emotional intelligence and perception of parental care in pregnant women. The results indicate that the perception of high emotional care, low emotional clarity and low emotional regulation, plus the perception of pregnant women have been overprotected by her father, show correlations with depression in pregnancy. This allows proposing linked to the perceived emotional intelligence as the reconstruction of early attachment experiences could act as protectors, aimed at reducing depression in pregnancy factors hypothesis, however this should be corroborated with further studies in larger samples and analysis more complex.

Background: Being a mother for every woman is of great pride. But this moment of happiness and pride is associated with depression that might affect the health of both the mother and the baby. So this matter has to be looked into and taken care of but is not being done especially in our context.Objective: To identify the prevalence of depression and its severity in pregnant women from 14 weeks to 36 weeks of gestation at Kathmandu Medical College and Teaching Hospital.Methods: This is a descriptive and prospective study where 195 pregnant women from 14 weeks to 36 weeks of gestation were enrolled. The study was conducted at Kathmandu Medical College and Teaching Hospital from 1st October 2015 to 1st February 2016. The Centre For Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale was used in this study to identify depression in pregnancy. This is a structured scale used worldwide to study the relationship between depression and pregnancy. It consists of 20 items; each given a score of 0, 1,2 and 3. A total score of 16 or more is considered depression. After taking informed consent, cases fulfilling the inclusion criteria were asked questions as per the scale and scoring were done.Results: Among the total 195 cases, eight (4.1%) had CESD scale scoring above 16 indicating depression and among these eight cases, five were in the age group of 18 – 25 years, two in the age group of 26 – 30 years and one in the age group of more than 30 years.Conclusion: This study did not show definite relationship between depression and pregnancy. Journal of Kathmandu Medical College Vol. 5, No. 2, Issue 16, Apr.-Jun., 2016

The worldwide prevalence of obesity has dramatically increased, mostly in children and adolescents. The Emotional Eating theoretical model has proposed that the failure in emotional regulation could represent a risk factor for establishing maladaptive overeating behavior that represents an inadequate response to negative emotions and allows increasing body-weight. This systematic review investigates the relationship between overeating and both emotional regulation and emotional intelligence in childhood and adolescence, considering both cross-sectional and longitudinal studies. Moreover, another goal of the review is evaluating whether emotional regulation and emotional intelligence can cause overeating behaviors. The systematic search was conducted according to the PRISMA-statement in the databases Medline, PsychArtcles, PsychInfo, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Sciences, and allows 484 records to be extracted. Twenty-six studies were selected according to inclusion (e.g., studies focused on children and adolescents without clinical conditions; groups of participants overweight or with obesity) and exclusion (e.g., studies that adopted qualitative assessment or cognitive-affective tasks to measure emotional variables; reviews, commentary, or brief reports) criteria detailed in the methods. Cross-sectional studies showed a negative association between emotional regulation and overeating behavior that was confirmed by longitudinal studies. These findings highlighted the role of maladaptive emotion regulation on overeating and being overweight. The relationship between these constructs in children and adolescents was consistent. The results indicated the complexity of this association, which would be influenced by many physiological, psychological, and social factors. These findings underline the need for further studies focused on emotion regulation in the development of overeating. They should analyze the mediation role of other variables (e.g., attachment style, peer pressure) and identify interventions to prevent and reduce worldwide overweight prevalence.

This study examines the relationship between self-perceived emotional intelligence (EI) measured by the Emotional Intelligence Scale (EIS) [1] and other personality measures including the five-factor-model. The EI construct has lately been re-defined as the ability to think intelligently about emotions and to use them to enhance intelligent thinking [2]. Two studies provide support that self-reported EI is mainly associated with personality traits (extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, self-perceived creativity), life satisfaction and thinking styles with only a low relation to verbal intelligence. Furthermore, persons higher in the EI dimension “emotional efficacy” produced more creative performances than persons low in this domain. These findings suggest that self-reported EI cannot be considered as a rational form of intelligence so that it does qualify to fit into the framework of personality traits.

Abstract.Emotional intelligence is the ability to perceive, use, understand and regulate emotions to facilitate thought (Mayer and Salovey, 1997). The concept of burnout is the English expression to describe what stopped functioning because of the exhaustion of energy (France, 1987, cited by Carlotto, 2012).This study aimed to understand the perceived emotional intelligence as a protective factor against burnout, as well as studying the relationship between emotional intelligence and burnout. The sample was constituted by 250 teachers in the 2nd cycle (26.4%), 3rd cycle (57.2%) and Secondary school (16.4%), with (70.4%) females and (29.6%), males in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (RAM), Portugal. As instruments, we used a socio-demographic and professional’s questionnaire, the trait metamood scale (TMMS-24), the expressiveness and emotion regulation of Berkeley questionnaire and the Maslach burnout inventory (MBI). In the study did not find evidence that marital status, age, length of service and level of education influences taught emotional intelligence and burnout. Only gender seems to influence emotional intelligence. To confirm the statistical relationship between emotional intelligence and burnout, we used Spearman´s correlation test between variables and it was concluded that the higher the repair of emotions, the less emotional exhaustion and depersonalization and higher the revaluation emotions are higher is the emotional exhaustion.Keywords: Emotional intelligence, burnout, teacher, emotional expressiveness, emotional regulation.Resumo.A inteligência emocional é a capacidade de perceber, usar, conhecer e regular as emoções para facilitar o pensamento (Mayer & Salovey, 1997). Já o conceito de Burnout é a expressão inglesa para designar aquilo que deixou de funcionar por exaustão de energia (França, 1987, citado por, Carlotto, 2012). Este estudo teve como objetivos compreender a inteligência emocional percebida como fator de proteção face ao burnout, bem como estudar as relações entre a inteligência emocional e o burnout. No estudo participaram 250 professores do 2º ciclo (26.4%), 3º ciclo (57.2%) e Secundário (16.4 %), do género feminino (70.4%) e do masculino (29.6%), da Região Autónoma da Madeira (RAM), Portugal. Como instrumentos usámos um Questionário de Dados Sócio-Demográficos e Profissionais, o Trait Meta-Mood Scale (TMMS-24), o Questionário de Expressividade e o de Regulação Emocional de Berkeley e o Inventário de Burnout de Maslach (MBI). No estudo realizado não se encontrou evidências de que o estado civil, idade, tempo de serviço e nível de ensino lecionado influencie a inteligência emocional e o burnout. Somente o género pareceu influenciar a inteligência emocional. Para confirmar a relação estatística entre a inteligência emocional e o burnout foi realizado um teste de correlação de Spearman entre as variáveis e concluiu-se que quanto maior a reparação das emoções, menor é a exaustão emocional e a despersonalização e quanto maior a reavaliação das emoções, maior a exaustão emocional.Palavras-chave: Inteligência emocional, burnout, professor, expressividade emocional e regulação emocional.

The study investigates the relationship between perceived emotional intelligence, burnout, work engagement, and job satisfaction in 238 Italian school teachers. The mean age was 50 years, ranged from 26 to 66 (SD = 9.16). The research protocol included a demographics data sheet, the Wong and Law Emotional Intelligence Scale (WLEIS; Wong & Law, 2002), the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI; Kristensen, Borritz, Villadsen, & Christensen, 2005), the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES; Schaufeli, Bakker, & Salanova, 2006), and the Organizational Satisfaction Scale (QSO; Cortese, 2001). Several international studies already demonstrated an association among these variables. Our results showed that perceived emotional intelligence positively correlates with work engagement and job satisfaction, and negatively correlates with burnout. Hierarchical regression analyses also point out that, among all the perceived emotional intelligence subdimensions, the use of emotion is the best predictor of the study variables, even when controlling for gender differences. These results suggest that emotional intelligence may have a protective role in preventing negative working experiences of teachers.

Abstract Introduction. Pregnant women often create their own image of a child. The ultrasound is able to model and modify this picture. The image of the unborn child develops along with the process of creating the space for the baby on the psychological and emotional level and is continued after the delivery. Aim. The authors of the study made an attempt to evaluate the influence of fetal sex determination during ultrasound in pregnancy on emotional and ‘practical’ experiencing late pregnancy - after the 28th week of its duration. Material and methods. The study included 200 pregnant women. Qualification criteria for the research was the declared awareness of fetal sex confirmed by ultrasound. Among others, factors influencing decision to determine fetal sex, emotional bond with the unborn child after identifying the sex, as well as preparation for birth regarding prognosticated sex were assessed. Results. Nearly all pregnant women wanted to find out the fetal sex, usually claiming that they did so out of curiosity. After they did it, about 2/3 of them stated that the emotional bond with the baby increased and the vast majority of women started preparing layettes for their future babies. Conclusions. Determination of fetal sex during ultrasound improves the relationship between the mother and her future baby. It also enables the woman to prepare for childbirth considering its sex by the purchase of clothes, pram and preparation of layette or baby’s room

Abstract Background : At the beginning of a pregnancy the mother experiences various processes of transition or adaptation regarding changes in herself, so that she really needs support from her environment. Lack of social support can worsen the physiological complaints of pregnant women including Nausea and Vomiting in Pregnancy (NVP). Complaints of nausea and vomiting can affect the mother in carrying out daily activities, affect the mother's social situation with the environment and cause stress. Therefore, it is important to research the relationship between social support and the degree of nausea and vomiting in first and second-trimester pregnant women. Method : This research method is observational analytic with cross sectional research design. Sampling used the total sampling method with the criteria of pregnant women who had complaints of nausea and vomiting. Collecting data using primary data using a 24-hour PUQE questionnaire that measures the duration and frequency of nausea and vomiting and the MSPSS questionnaire measuring social support. The data collected were analyzed using the Spearman test (p<0.15). Results : Out of 47 respondents, 34 pregnant women (72.3%) received high social support. Besides that, 24 out of 47 respondents (51.1%) experienced moderate degree of NVP. In this study, there were no respondents who experienced severe degree of NVP. Spearman test analysis results obtained p= 0.833 or p>0.15. Conclusion : There is no relationship between social support with NVP in first and second trimester of pregnancy.

AbstractNausea and vomiting in pregnancy (NVP) affects 70-90% of all pregnant women but its pathogenesis is unknown. Growth and Differentiation Factor 15 (GDF15), secreted from the trophoblast and decidual stromal cells, is present at high levels in the blood of pregnant women. The receptor for GDF15 has recently been identified and is specifically expressed in the hindbrain where it transmits aversive signals including nausea and conditioned taste aversion. We explored the relationship between GDF15 concentrations in maternal serum during pregnancy and self-reported NVP. In a study of 791 women from the Cambridge Baby Growth Study maternal GDF15 concentrations were higher in women who reported vomiting in the 2nd trimester (geometric mean: 11,670 pg/mL; 95% confidence interval: 11,056-12,318) and were even higher in the eleven women who reported taking anti-emetics during pregnancy (13,376 (10,821-16,535) compared to those who reported no nausea or vomiting during pregnancy (10,657 (10,121-11,222); P=0.02 and P=0.04, respectively, adjusted for gestational age at sampling and maternal BMI). In conclusion serum GDF15 concentrations early in the second trimester of pregnancy are significantly and positively associated with second trimester vomiting and with maternal anti-emetic use. In the context of the recently revealed biology of GDF15 this data suggests that antagonism of GDF15 may have some potential for therapeutic benefit in NVP.

OBJECTIVEWomen have been shown to have a higher risk of cerebral aneurysm formation, growth, and rupture than men. The authors present a review of the recently published neurosurgical literature that studies the role of pregnancy and female sex steroids, to provide a conceptual framework with which to understand the various risk factors associated with cerebral aneurysms in women at different stages in their lives.METHODSThe PubMed database was searched for “(“intracranial” OR “cerebral”) AND “aneurysm” AND (“pregnancy” OR “estrogen” OR “progesterone”)” between January 1980 and February 2019. A total of 392 articles were initially identified, and after applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, 20 papers were selected for review and analysis. These papers were then divided into two categories: 1) epidemiological studies about the formation, growth, rupture, and management of cerebral aneurysms in pregnancy; and 2) investigations on female sex steroids and cerebral aneurysms (animal studies and epidemiological studies).RESULTSThe 20 articles presented in this study include 7 epidemiological articles on pregnancy and cerebral aneurysms, 3 articles reporting case series of cerebral aneurysms treated by endovascular therapies in pregnancy, 3 epidemiological articles reporting the relationship between female sex steroids and cerebral aneurysms through retrospective case-control studies, and 7 experimental studies using animal and/or cell models to understand the relationship between female sex steroids and cerebral aneurysms. The studies in this review report similar risk of aneurysm rupture in pregnant women compared to the general population. Most ruptured aneurysms in pregnancy occur during the 3rd trimester, and most pregnant women who present with cerebral aneurysm have caesarean section deliveries. Endovascular treatment of cerebral aneurysms in pregnancy is shown to provide a new and safe form of therapy for these cases. Epidemiological studies of postmenopausal women show that estrogen hormone therapy and later age at menopause are associated with a lower risk of cerebral aneurysm than in matched controls. Experimental studies in animal models corroborate this epidemiological finding; estrogen deficiency causes endothelial dysfunction and inflammation, which may predispose to the formation and rupture of cerebral aneurysms, while exogenous estrogen treatment in this population may lower this risk.CONCLUSIONSThe aim of this work is to equip the neurosurgical and obstetrical/gynecological readership with the tools to better understand, critique, and apply findings from research on sex differences in cerebral aneurysms.
