The purpose of the study was to investigate the views of preservice teachers about use of slowmation in biology teaching. In the study, descriptive model was used. The participants were 12 third-grade preservice teachers in the department of Biology Education at Ziya Gökalp Education Faculty of Dicle University in the Spring Term of the academic year of 2016-2017. The research data were collected via observations and semi-structured interviews. In the research process slowmation activities were carried out with preservice biology teachers and at the end of these activities the preservice teachers’ views about the activities were determined. The data collected in the study were analyzed using the content analysis method. As revealed by the analysis of the data, the preservice teachers thought that the slowmation activities contributed to the development of some 21st century skills such as creativity, communication and cooperation skills, information literacy, research skills, technology and media literacy skills. In addition, the preservice teachers reported that the process of creating slowmation was interesting and that they entertained in the process. On the other hand, the preservice teachers also stated that it was difficult to create scenarios and that they experienced problems with the materials used. Moreover, it was seen that the preservice teachers faced problems with the video editing software and that they experienced disputes regarding the distribution of duties during group works. The preservice teachers also put forward suggestions regarding the use of slowmation activities in biology teaching saying that teachers and students could work together in the application process; that activities could be carried out to summarize the subject and to increase permanency; and that different tools and software programs could be used.

AbstractIntroduction: Inquiry-based teaching is a constructivist-based method that has become popular in recent years. In this method, students work in a systematic way like a scientist during the research process, actively participate in the learning process, solve problems and learn in practice. The aim of this study is to reveal the opinions of prospective teachers about inquiry based teaching practices.Methods: The study was designed in a qualitative research design. The participants of the study are primary mathematics teacher candidates. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews conducted face-to-face with the students. The data were analyzed using content analysis. The findings obtained from the analysis of the prospective teachers’ views were presented with the relevant themes and codes under the titles.Results: Some of the findings of the prospective teachers’ opinions about the process in which inquiry-based teaching method is applied are as follows. It provides permanent learning, is suitable for real life, develops skills such as research, problem solving, leadership, motivates and gives experience to the profession, is learned actively by doing and experiencing in the process, unexpected difficulties are encountered, the traditional method is easier, not suitable for every course, the lecturer should give more feedback and guidance, communication and coordination in group work is required.Discussion: Prospective teachers stated many positive opinions about the process in which the course content was taught using inquiry-based method. It can be said that the application process positively influences the practical knowledge and skills of teacher candidates. However, it is seen that some prospective teachers find the process tiring and time consuming. It is understood that teacher candidates have intense concerns about Public Personnel Selection Examination (KPSS) and this affects the process. KPSS is a test in Turkey for prospective teachers where they should get enough points to be appointed as teachers after graduation. Although the participants of this study are 3rd grade prospective teachers and they take the KPSS exam after graduation; it is understood that KPSS affects them and their motivation.Limitations: This research is limited to the measurement and evaluation course and to the 3rd grade mathematics teacher candidates who are the participants of this study.Conclusions: Prospective teachers mostly have positive opinions about the inquiry-based teaching process. It can be said that it would be beneficial to use this method in teacher education.

The aim of this study is to implement micro teaching method in Special Teaching Methods I and II courses in order to teach preservice teachers how to make lesson plans and help them gain experiences in classroom management issues; i.e. to improve their teaching skills. The study was designed according to the principles of action research. Pre-service teachers carried out micro teaching sessions during the fall and the spring term as a requirement of Special Teaching Methods I and II courses. The research process started at the beginning of each term. In the first 7 weeks, the instructor provided preservice teachers with theoretical knowledge about special teaching methods. The practice phase started after the mid-term exams, in which the participants were divided into groups and taught lessons on predetermined topics by using micro teaching methods. The teaching practices were video recorded. The data of the study were obtained from video recordings of the micro teaching sessions, the semi-structured interviews conducted with the participants and the learner diaries. A total of 40 preservice teachers participated in the study; however, the data from 10 participants were used in the analysis. The results revealed that preservice teachers gained experience in teaching and improved their teaching, classroom management, and lesson plan preparation skills thanks to this implementation.

The education of gifted students is one of the areas of differentiated education, the main goal of which is to study people with special/particular abilities. The problem of talent is now becoming more and more relevant. This is primarily due to the need of society to develop creative personalities. The uncertainty of the modern environment requires not only a high level of human activity, but also his skills and ability to behave in a non-standard way. It is obvious that the early identification, teaching and education of gifted students is one of the key challenges in improving the education system. However, insufficient psychological teachers’ preparation/readiness to work with children, who behave and think in a non-standard way, leads to inadequate assessment of their personal characteristics and all activities. In January-March 2021, a qualitative study was conducted, in which 10 teachers of general education schools participated. Data obtained through semi-structured interviews were analysed using the content analysis method. It has been found that the majority of teachers are able to describe gifted students, trust their competence to identify them. It has been revealed that certain differences exist between the schools analysed. Some schools systematically and qualitatively educate the gifted, while others lack common agreements on the education of the gifted, there is no system, support for teachers and students. Due to the different conditions, not all gifted students receive appropriate support, and the ongoing programmes accept a limited number of students, which creates a problem of access to the quality education of the gifted. Such situation may have arisen due to the lack of a clear state strategy for the education of gifted students, and educational guidelines for schools and teachers. It is obvious that in order to improve the quality of gifted students’ education, it is necessary to update educational documents, that regulate gifted students’ education and create a unified Lithuanian students’ education system based on positive examples of schools and many years of experience. This study aims to test the effectiveness of the blended learning rotation model to improve the scientific literacy skill of prospective teacher students. The design of this study used the Posttest-only design with nonequivalent groups. The research subjects were 76 students majoring in biology education at Universitas Mataram. The research was done to two experimental groups, namely the blended learning station rotation model (BLSRM) and regular learning (RL). The research instrument used a multiple-choice test which refers to the aspects of scientific literacy competence according to PISA. The data analysis technique was carried out descriptively, complete with the Hotelling's T2 test to test the effect of BLSRM on students' scientific literacy skills. The results showed that students' scientific literacy skills were in the very low category (mean BLSRM = 38.50, RL = 34.22) and there was no effect of BLSRM on students' scientific literacy skills (Hotteling Trace = .098 and Sig. = .080). To improve students' scientific literacy skills, BLSRM needs to be combined with other models such as problem-solving model, so it can be an effective strategy in science learning

Laboratories are an indispensable part of the fundamental sciences. Laboratories are important learning environments that enable students to relate events to daily life as well as being places where theoretical knowledge is implemented. The present study investigated the knowledge and usage level of preservice biology teachers regarding lab equipment and materials. The study utilized a descriptive survey. A total of 61 preservice biology teachers from the Biology Education Department of a public university in Turkey constituted the participants. Lab Equipment and Materials Recognition Form that is developed by the researcher of the present study was used to collect data. In the design of this form, the 9–12 grade biology curriculum was first analyzed, and a list of frequently-used equipment and materials of biology laboratories was created in line with the opinions of field experts. The form included 40 laboratories equipment and materials and questions regarding the recognition of these items, their functions, and their application processes. The preservice teachers’ answers to these questions were graded as: zero points for each incorrect answer, one point for each partially correct answer, and two points for each correct answer. The data obtained were analyzed using cluster analysis, descriptive analysis, one-way analysis of variance, and independent samples T-test in SPSS27 software, and the Polycoric correlation coefficient in Factor Analysis software. The results revealed that the preservice teachers mainly recognize the biology laboratories equipment and materials but generally lack information regarding the application process of laboratories equipment and materials.

The School Literacy Movement (GLS) is a policy issued by the government to overcome the problem of education and improve the basic literacy abilities of students. SDN 6 Pekanbaru is one of the schools that has implemented GLS at the familiarization stage well. Therefore, this study aims to determine the basic literacy skills of students in low classes through the implementation of GLS in SDN 6 Pekanbaru. This study used qualitative research conducted through observation and interviews about the implementation of GLS and students’ basic literacy skills with teachers and students in classes I and II. The results showed that GLS was able to improve the phonetic abilities of students by achieving a very good level of the ability to read and pronounce combinations of letters. The increase of students' vocabulary comprehension ability was seen where most students were able to know the meaning of words and retell the contents of books with theme daily activities. From the research findings, it was concluded that GLS improved the basic literacy ability of low-class students at SDN 6 Pekanbaru.

In the study, the purpose was to determine the perceptions of students from the department of Computer Education and Instructional Technologies regarding the concept of curriculum. The participants of the study conducted with the phenomenology research design were 212 preservice teachers. The research data were collected via document analysis and interviews. For the analysis of the data, the inductive content analysis method was used. The results revealed that the preservice teachers perceived the concept of curriculum as a process with positive and negative features which emphasize change and development. The results also demonstrated that the participants perceived their levels of knowledge about curriculum as partly sufficient. In addition, it was found that undergraduate education has an important role in the development of these perceptions. Moreover, the results emphasized the need for making more planned and systematic regulations in relation to the functioning of curriculum studies in Turkey. Lastly, the results demonstrated that there is a need for regulations in the structure of the preservice teacher education curricula to give meaning to the concept of curriculum.

This study engaged 26 preservice teachers (PTs) in research focused on students in a secondary methods course who had early field experience (EFE). The purposes of the study were (a) to determine what PTs learned about students in an early field experience (EFE) that engaged them in a structured teacher research project and (b) to examine how the teacher research process was used by PTs. Results indicated that questions about students became more refined and focused through the research process and that there were fluctuations between student-centered and teacher-centered questions during the EFE. The prevailing themes indicated that PTs came to know more about student motivation and interests, characteristics, and peer interactions. More importantly, much of their data challenged previous beliefs and assumptions about students, as PTs began making connections between their newfound knowledge of students and its implications for curriculum, instruction, and management decisions.

Biology education has adopted the goal of educating future generations about sustainable, healthy habits. The current paper focuses on drinking-related nutritional literacy—the characteristic of health education that refers to aspects of healthy drinking: drinking enough water and fewer sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs). The study aims to foster school students’ critical thinking about the quality and the quantity of what they drink in everyday life. Facilitating students’ metacognitive awareness was achieved, as they were engaged in a biology learning activity centered on the importance of healthy drinking in everyday life. The study focused on two research questions: 1. What is the contribution of drinking-related metacognitive guidance to the development of metacognitive awareness concerning healthy drinking among students? 2. What is the contribution of drinking-related metacognitive guidance to the way students express the principles and importance of healthy drinking as part of their metacognitive awareness thinking process? The findings indicate a quantitative and qualitative improvement in drinking-related metacognitive awareness among those students who received metacognitive guidance as part of biology teaching. This paper suggests that metacognitive guidance has a significant pedagogical potential to improve sustainable healthy habits among children.

Purpose This paper aims to demonstrate how teaching the discourse of critique, an integral part of the video production process, can be used to eliminate barriers for young people in gaining new media literacy skills helping more young people become producers rather than consumers of digital media. Design/methodology/approach This paper describes an instrumental qualitative case study (Stake, 2000) in two elective high school video production classrooms in the Midwestern region of the USA. The author conducted observations, video and audio recorded critique sessions, conducted semi-structured interviews and collected artifacts throughout production including storyboards, brainstorms and rough and final cuts of videos. Findings Throughout critique, young video producers used argumentation strategies to cocreate meaning, multiple methods of inquiry and questioning, critically evaluated feedback and synthesized their ideas and those of their peers to achieve their intended artistic vision. Young video producers used feedback in the following ways: incorporated feedback directly into their work, rejected and ignored feedback, or incorporated some element of the feedback in a way not originally intended. Originality/value This paper demonstrates how teaching the discourse of critique can be used to eliminate barriers for young people in gaining new media literacy skills. Educators can teach argumentation and inquiry strategies through using thinking guides that encourage active processing and through engaging near peer mentors. Classroom educators can integrate the arts-based practice of the pitch critique session to maximize the impact of peer-to-peer learning.
