The ocean islands are far from inland and the concrete sandstone aggregates are scarce. In this paper, high-performance seawater all-coral concrete was developed by seawater mixing and room temperature maintenance design, and by optimizing the water-to-binder ratio, regulating internal curing, changing auxiliary cementing materials and blending ratio, incorporating expansion agent, adjusting fiber blending, etc. Combined with the consideration of work performance and mechanical properties, the concrete self-shrinkage is adjusted to further optimize the mix design. The mechanical properties of the optimized high-performance seawater all-coral concrete were studied, and the relevant durability tests were carried out according to the natural environment characteristics of the island. This is of great significance to the construction of island projects, repair and construction, and construction of protective projects [1].

Abstract Disposal sites for both industrial and communal waste are hazardous for the natural environment due to the accumulated materials and their chemical, physical and biological transformations. The products of these processes migrating at a significant distance contaminate mainly underground waters, surface waters and soils. The spreading of the pollutants may be prevented by horizons of clay rocks that form natural geological barriers. The clay rocks of properly selected parameters may be used in the environmental engineering for constructing artificial water-sealing layers. The mineral, chemical, physico-chemical and physico-mechanical properties of the beidellite clays occurring within the lignite deposit in Bełchatów were studied to find out whether they meet the criteria of waterproofing engineering contained in the Polish recommendations and instructions. The results indicate that the beidellite clays of Bełchatów are rocks suitable for this kind of environmental engineering and may be used in constructing the barriers preventing the migration of effluents from landfills.

Bamboo fiber reinforced polylactic acid composite is a kind of green composite materials with excellent performance, which is environmental safe and degradable in natural environment. Literature regarding the characteristics of reinforcement and matrix, pretreatment methods, preparation technology and biodegradable nature of the bamboo/ polylactic acid composite was reviewed and a particular bamoo/ polylactic acid composite made by biaxial weft knitted fabrics was developed. The composite demonstrated excellent tensile and flexural performance. In addition, the influence of the linear density of the binder yarns on the mechanical properties of this composite was insignificant.

AbstractThe article presents the basic properties of composite materials used for the construction of special ships. Static and dynamic characteristics of materials such as wood and polyester-glass composites are presented. Noteworthy are materials such as surface modified wood and polyester-glass composites with the addition of recyclate. Composite materials are widely used materials for the construction of non-magnetic warships. The article describes the properties of surface modified wood with polymethyl methacrylate and a polyester-glass composite with the addition of recyclate. The recyclate is fragmented, milled polyester-glass scrap. The content of the recyclate greatly affects the mechanical properties of the composite. The properties of the composite with the addition of recyclate depend on the recyclate content as well as the production technology and size of the recycled granulates. The test results showed that the increase in the recycled content causes a decrease in the mechanical properties of the composite. However, it should be remembered that these materials originated from waste, waste that is not subject to self-degradation, which have a very negative impact on the natural environment. At present, where there is a very large pollution of the natural environment, the processing and management of huge amounts of composite waste is an essential goal. A significant amount of recyclate significantly reduces the mechanical properties of the composite; however, the same large amount of recycled material has been transformed and used. The manufactured material and its structural elements are still non-magnetic structures and can be used on a less loaded element. The choice of material for the construction of special ships elements is determined not only by its properties but also by knowledge, experience, method of processing, economic and technical risk.

The mechanical properties of foam asphalt mixture are investigated, including indirect tensile strength (ITS), moisture resistance, rutting resistance and fatigue resistance. The test results indicate the 40°C3d curing mehod can stimulate the 30d or 60d natural environment temperature (25°C) curing procedures, which can quickly evaluate the long term ITS of foam asphalt mixture with cement or without cement. Cement can obviously improve the ITS, moisture resistance and fatigue test. The paper recommends proper cement content of foam asphalt mixture should be in between 1.5% to 2.5%.

The dynamic development of nanoscience and nanotechnology has led to revolutionary changes in many areas of science and industry, raising a great deal of hope for its potential to solve a wide range of problems of the modern world. Nanomaterials, also referred to as engineered nanoparticles are a product of nanotechnology and, compared to macro-particles, show unique physical, chemical, biological and mechanical properties which significantly extend the range of practical applications. The paper presents the applicability of engineered nanoparticles in the defence industry and concerns related to their release into the environment.

Abstract The paper discusses the issues of increasing the dumping capacity of hydrodumps and their reclamation by filling them with dump embankments from relatively strong overburden. Without the implementation of this measure, the alluvial massifs are inaccessible for a long time for various mining and transport equipment due to the low bearing capacity of the rocks. The specifics of the formation of the composition, state and properties of rocks of alluvial massifs due to the development of fractionation and filtration consolidation processes are noted. The technology of dumping the surface of hydrodump by controlled deformation of the slopes of the first dump layer has been substantiated. A method has been developed for predicting the parameters of intrusion-replacement of alluvial rocks by bulk ones using numerical modeling of the FEM in the Euler formulation. The obtained mechanical properties and regularities of the deformation behavior of technogenic rocks were used to perform geomechanical calculations when justifying the stable parameters of the slopes of the formed natural-technical systems (NTS) “hydrodump+dump” and compaction of embankments to justify the mining-technical stage of reclamation. A geoecological assessment of the impact of the dump NTS on the natural environment has been carried out, which is expressed in the acquisition of land from circulation and the disruption of the natural landscape. The conditions for the formation of technogenic eluvium on the surface of the dump suitable for biological reclamation are considered.

AbstractAnselme & Güntürkün generate exciting new insights by integrating two disparate fields to explain why uncertain rewards produce strong motivational effects. Their conclusions are developed in a framework that assumes a random distribution of resources, uncommon in the natural environment. We argue that, by considering a realistically clumped spatiotemporal distribution of resources, their conclusions will be stronger and more complete.

AbstractAs a general theory of extreme self-sacrifice, Whitehouse's article misses one relevant dimension: people's willingness to fight and die in support of entities not bound by biological markers or ancestral kinship (allyship). We discuss research on moral expansiveness, which highlights individuals’ capacity to self-sacrifice for targets that lie outside traditional in-group markers, including racial out-groups, animals, and the natural environment.
