Photographs play a crucial role in the ways the lives and deaths of Pier Paolo Pasolini and Aldo Moro are remembered in Italian culture. Locating photographs of the two men taken before and after their murders against the backdrop of the changes in photographic practice that took place in Italy from the period of the economic boom in the late 1950s through to the early 1970s, this article explores and compares the cultural meanings of the photographs of the bodies of these two very different but equally symbolic public figures, both alive and dead. Analysing the significance of these images in Italy in the 1970s and after, it notes how contemporary theoretical approaches to the medium – particularly in terms of understandings of mass media forms and the theoretical linking of photography and death – shaped how the photographs have been understood in relation to their social and political context. It argues that the afterimage of the photographs of the corpses of Pasolini and Moro is overlaid in Italian cultural memory over the visual record of the two men during their lives in a kind of mnemonic ‘double exposure’ that constitutes these bodies of images as collective icons of their times.

Learning English prepositions is deemed as a difficult task for EFL learners (Cheng, 2006) because some English prepositions have many similar but slightly different meanings (Boers & Demecheleer, 1998; Radden, 1985). EFL leaners face difficulty in using English prepositions because they may only learn the linguistic forms but not the conceptual meanings embedded in prepositions. The purpose of this research is to investigate English spatial prepositions in, on, and at from a cognitive perspective, e.g. the theory of conceptual metaphor (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980) and cognitive grammar (Langacker, 2008). The investigation of the present study was mainly done with document analysis (Bowen, 2009; O’Leary, 2014). After reviewing many primary and previous studies (Dikken, 1995; Freeborn, 1987; Lindstromberg, 1996, 2010; Nishimura, 2005; Radden, 1985), the findings show that English prepositions in, on, and at have not only their prototypical meanings but also implicit meanings, which may be extended by metaphors. It is also found that there is an intimate relationship between the spatial and temporal meanings of prepositions. Besides, the prototypical meanings of in, on, and at can be the foundation to learn other spatial or temporal concepts. Therefore, it is suggested that understanding metaphors and the implicit meanings embedded in prepositions can help EFL students’ learning of English language.

The Syariah Court in Malaysia possesses executive jurisdiction in deciding upon matters related to creed and religious status. The jurisdiction aims to restrain the signs of heresy and renunciation of religion of Islam among Muslims. Nevertheless, the creed restoration practice (istitabah) for the state level renunciation of religion of Islam application cases is still unclear. This study aims to analyse the procedure after the application to renounce religion of Islam is received at Syariah Court and the process of creed restoration that is instructed upon an applicant prior to the Syariah Court decision. This study used document analysis approach by conducting specialized observation on the law provisions and renunciation of religion of Islam cases as well as the restoration modules in the centre of creed restoration. The outcomes of the study found that the creed restoration practice was conducted in the form of creed counselling or detention at the centre of creed restoration depending on the instruction from the Syariah Court Judge after the acceptance of religious status application cases. There were no clear and standardized law provisions regarding repentance order (istitabah) at state level. The study also provides the implications and several recommendations for improvement of the creed restoration practice.
