Study aim: The aim of this study was to assess the effects of systemic cryotherapy on the rheological properties of the blood in women with rheumatoid arthritis. Study group: The study group consisted of 10 women with rheumatoid arthritis, aged 57.2 ± 9.4, who underwent systemic cryotherapy treatments (3 min treatment time, -120 °C chamber temperature, 10 treatment sessions - 5 times a week). Their average body height was 165.5 ± 4.6 cm, weight 68.5 ± 4.9 kg and BMI 24.8 ± 2.2 kg/m2. In order to analyze morphological and rheological parameters of the blood, venous blood samples were drawn from the participants of the study twice. The first study was held on the day of beginning treatments and the second test was conducted after a series of 10 treatments. Methodology: The morphological blood test - measurements were taken using the ABX MICROS 60 (USA) hematology analyser. Erythrocyte deformability and aggregation were tested using the LORCA analyser (Laser-assisted Optical Rotational Cell Analyser RR Mechatronics, The Netherlands). The results were obtained as the index of elongation and aggregation according to the Hardeman method (2001). Results: Analysing the average values of morphological and rheological parameters of the blood in women with rheumatoid arthritis in the study group, the mean values of RBC, Hct and AI following the series of 10 treatments were significantly higher after cryotherapy in comparison to the measurements taken before treatments. Analysing the mean concentrations of T½, there was statistically significant reduction after the series of 10 treatments. Conclusions: Regular usage of cryotherapy treatments may affect the levels of morphological and rheological parameters of the blood in women with rheumatoid arthritis - RBC, Hct and AI (increase) and T½ (reduction) in the blood. null

Study aim: The aim of this study was to assess the effects of whole body cryotherapy on the plasma viscosity and fibrinogen in women with rheumatoid arthritis. Study group: The study groups consisted of 10 womens with rheumatoid arthritis, aged 57.2 ± 9.4, who underwent systemic cryotherapy treatments (3 min treatment time, -120°C chamber temperature, 10 treatment sessions, 5 times a week). Their average body height was 165.5 ± 4.6 cm, weight 68.5 ± 4.9 kg and BMI 24.8 ± 2.2 kg/m2. In order to analyse plasma parameters, venous blood samples were drawn from the participants of the study twice. The first study was held on the day of beginning treatments and the second test was conducted after a series of 10 treatments. Methodology: The viscosity of the blood plasma was determined in the viscometer (type D-52159 Roetgen, Myrenne Co., Germany). Determination of plasma fibrinogen was performed using the Bio-Ksel, Chrom – 7 camera. Results: Analysing the average values of plasma viscosity and fibrinogen in women with rheumatoid arthritis before and after whole body cryotherapy, no statistically significant differences were found. Conclusions: Regular usage of cryotherapy treatments (whole body cryotherapy) not affect the levels of fibrinogen and plasma viscosity in women with rheumatoid arthritis.

Background:Boolean remission criteria is one most popular and stringent criteria in treating patient with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), because it may guarantees a stable clinical course after attaining remission.Objectives:Impact of time span from initiation to achieving Boolean remission on maintaining disease activity, daily activities, and quality of life after attaining Boolean remission was investigated from daily clinical practice data.Methods:685 patients with RA since August 2010 under the T2T strategy were treated. They were monitored for their TJC, SJC, PGA, EGA, CRP, and disease activity indices such as CDAI, SDAI, DAS28, and Boolean criteria at every visit. HAQ-DI score, pain score using visual analog scale (PS-VAS), and EQ-5D were also monitored, and the quality of life score (QOLS) calculated from EQ-5D was determined at every visit from the time of diagnosis (baseline).Of 685 patients, 465 patients had achieved Boolean remission >1 times, and were consecutively followed up for >3 years. These patients were enrolled in the study. Time span from the first visit to first Boolean remission was calculated. The relationship between the time span and each of background parameters, and the relationship between the time span and each of the mean values of the SDAI score, HAQ score, PS-VAS, SHS, and QOLS at the first Boolean remission and thereafter was evaluated statistically.Patients were subsequently divided into the G ≤ 6 and G > 6 groups based on the achievement of first Boolean remission within two groups: time span G ≤ 6 months and G > 6 months. The two groups were compared with regard to the SDAI score, HAQ score, PS-VAS, SHS, and QOLS at first visit and at the time of first Boolean remission, and the mean values of these parameters after remission were evaluated statistically. Moreover, changes of these parameters and the mean Boolean remission rate after the first remission, and SDAI remission rate at the first Boolean remission to thereafter were compared between the two groups statistically.Results:Out of 465 patients, females comprised 343 (73.7%), and the mean age was 67.8 years (range, from 21–95 years). The mean disease duration at first visit was 6.1 years (range, from 1 months–45 years). The mean follow up length was 88.1 months (range: 36–122 months; median: 85 months) and mean time span from the first visit to the first Boolean remission was 8.1 months. The mean SDAI score, HAQ score, PS-VAS, and the QOLS at first visit were 13.3, 0.467, 33.2, and 0.834, respectively. Among the study parameters, PS-VAS and QOLS were significantly correlated with the time span. For parameters at the first Boolean remission, HAQ-DI score, PS-VAS, and QOLS demonstrated significant correlation with the time span, whereas SDAI, HAQ-DI score, PS-VAS, SHS, and QOLS after the Boolean remission demonstrated significant correlation with the time span.The comparison between the G ≤ 6 and the G > 6 groups revealed that the disease duration, HAQ score, and PS-VAS at baseline in the G > 6 were significantly higher than that in the G ≤ 6 group, and QOLS in the G ≤ 6 group was significantly higher than that in the G > 6 group at baseline. Similarly, the HAQ score and PS-VAS at the first Boolean remission in the G > 6 group were significantly higher than that in the G ≤ 6 group, whereas QOLS in the G ≤ 6 group demonstrated no significant difference compared with that in the G > 6 group.The mean value of the SDAI score after the first Boolean remission in the G > 6 group was significantly higher than that in the G ≤ 6 group. Similarly, the SDAI score, HAQ score, and PS-VAS after the first Boolean remission in the G > 6 group were also significantly higher than those in the G ≤ 6 group, and the mean value of the QOLS in the G ≤ 6 group were significantly higher than that in the G > 6 group. The Boolean remission rate and SDAI remission rate after the first Boolean remission were significantly higher in the G ≤ 6 group than those in the G > 6 group.Conclusion:Attaining Boolean remission ≤ 6 months for RA has significant benefit for more stable disease control, that leads good maintenance of ADL.Disclosure of Interests:None declared

Association Between Osteoarticular Scores and Acute Phase Reactant Levels in Rheumatoid Arthritis The aim of this prospective control study was a quantitative evaluation of the activity of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in certain time intervals, using articular indexes (set of 28 sensitive and 28 swollen joints), laboratory parameters (Hb, Hct, Er, Le and Plt) and acute phase reactants (ESR, RF, CRP); to determine which of the acute phase reactants is the most useful biochemical marker for the evaluation of disease activity in RA; to quantify the therapeutical and laboratory differences in certain time intervals in the group with and without immunomodulatory therapy with Methotrexate. Sixty patients with RA were included, 27 of who were treated with non-steroid antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and Methotrexate (MTX). The control group consisted of 33 patients treated only with NSAIDs because of irregular controls. In the first group of patients the disease activity was estimated at four time intervals, and in the control group of patients at three time intervals following the scores of the articular indexes, blood cell counts, ESR and CRP in every patient. In the first group of patients decreased activity of RA was found upon every following control with a consecutive decrease in mean values of the scores of articular indexes with statistically significant differences at the four time intervals. Considering laboratory parameters, there were statistically significant differences in the mean values of Hb, Er, Plt, ESR, (p=0.0462, p=0.0076, p= 0.0058, p= 0.0003). Mean values of CRP did not show statistically significant differences, but the number of patients who were CRP negative increased (there were great standard deviations). In the group of patients treated only with NSAIDs, there were statistically significant differences in the mean values of the scores of articular indexes with an increse at every following control (in favour of progression of the disease). There were no statistically significant differences considering blood cell counts, ESR and CRP (in favour of permanently active disease). In conclusion, CRP is the most useful marker for the prospective follow-up of patients with RA.

Objective.To determine whether the correlation between the mean change in disease activity and the mean change in synovial sublining (sl) CD68 expression could be demonstrated across different academic centers.Methods.Synovial biopsies obtained at arthroscopy from patients with rheumatoid arthritis before and 160 days after rituximab therapy were selected and coded. Paired sections were processed independently at Amsterdam Medical Center (AMC) and at St. Vincent’s University Hospital (SVUH), Dublin. Digital image analysis (DIA) was employed at both centers to quantify sublining CD68 expression.Results.After analysis of CD68sl expression at centers in 2 different countries, high levels of intracenter and intercenter agreement were observed. For the pooled sections stained at AMC, the correlation between 2 investigators was R = 0.942, p = 0.000, and for sections stained at SVUH, R = 0.899, p = 0.001. Similarly, the intracenter correlations for ΔCD68sl expression after treatment were R = 0.998, p = 0.000, for sections stained at AMC and R = 0.880, p = 0.000, for sections stained at SVUH. The intercenter correlation for the pooled scores of sections stained at AMC was R = 0.85, p = 0.000, and for the sections stained at SVUH, R = 0.62, p = 0.001. The consistent correlation between ΔDAS (Disease Activity Score) and ΔCD68sl expression across different studies (Pearson correlation = 0.895, p < 0.001) was confirmed. The standardized response mean values for ΔCD68sl, calculated from analyses at both AMC and SVUH, were consistently 0.5 or greater, indicating a moderate to high potential to detect change.Conclusion.The correlation between mean ΔDAS and mean ΔCD68sl expression was confirmed across 2 centers. Examination of serial biopsy samples can be used reliably to screen for interesting biological effects at the site of inflammation at an early stage of drug development.

Validation of body-mass relationships requires a careful statistical analysis of data of normal weight individuals. BMI (ratio between body mass and square of body height) and BSI values (ratio between mass and cube of body height) have been calculated for 99 persons with ages between 1 day and 76 years. These BMI or BSI values have been used for least squares fits yielding mean BMI or BSI values, their variances (providing precision), and average deviations of individual BMI/BSI values from the BMI/BSI means. The latter allows limits to over- and underweight. For adults we found mean values of BSI of 12.36 and confirmed 21.7 for the mean BMI; but the BSI was 1.4 times more precise than the BMI. For children shorter than 1.3 m and younger than 8 years we found the BMI average of 15.9 and over-/underweight limits of 17.4/14.4 being significantly smaller than and incompatible with the recommended BMI values.

Background. The article has explored the problem of the humoral immunity recovery of elderly patients with chronic generalized periodontitis. Such immunological indicators as the immunoglobulin concentrations were used as detectors of inflammatory-destructive disease. Polyoxidonium has been suggested as an immunomodulator, as it promotes faster immune and clinical recovery compared to the conventional treatment regimens. Goals To assess the dynamics of clinical indicators and indicators of humoral immunity (sIgA, IgA, IgG and IgM levels), depending on immunomodulation, is added to the combined treatment regimen of elderly patients with periodontitis. Methods. Two patient cohorts of 69 elderly persons with chronic generalized periodontitis were examined. The conventional treatment was administered in both patient groups. The patients in the second cohort, along with other medications, received Polyoxidonium. The examination included gingival fluid and venous blood sampling, estimation of sIgA, IgA, IgG and IgM concentration as well as evaluation of PMA and SBI indices reduction. Results. The study has revealed the rise of IgG and IgM in venous blood. The recovery trend was observed in both cohorts, with a more marked dynamics in the second one. The mean values of antibodies concentration in the 2-nd group (since the 14th day) were statistically significant compared to the similar measures in the 1st one. After 3 months follow-up the substantial growth of immunoglobulins concentration was registered in the 1st cohort, whereas the 2nd one still showed the recovery trend. Results. The study has revealed the rise of IgG and IgM in venous blood. The recovery trend was observed in both cohorts, with a more marked dynamics in the second one. The mean values of antibodies concentration in the 2-nd group (since the 14th day) were statistically significant compared to the similar measures in the 1st one. After 3 months follow-up the substantial growth of immunoglobulins concentration was registered in the 1st cohort, whereas the 2nd one still showed the recovery trend. Conclusions. The inclusion of immunomodulator Polyoxidonium into the conventional treatment protocol of periodontitis promotes the immunologic reactivity recovery of elderly patients and the improvement of the therapeutic intervention effectiveness over the longer term.

O2 stores are kept more intact in apnea than in N2 breathing which removes O2stores from the body. If lactate moves readily into the circulation, arterial lactate should rise sooner with N2 breathing than with apnea because tissue O2 is lowered faster. This was tested in 10 anesthetized, paralyzed dogs made hypoxic both ways. Arterial and mixed venous blood were sampledevery minute until circulation began to fail. Calculated changes in O2 stores would have supported control V O2 for 1.3 min with N2 and 2.7 min with apnea. The PVO2 at those times were 23.1 and 20.1 Torr. Although arterial lactate rose sooner with N2 than with apnea, the mean values for lactate increase for both N2 and apnea were fitted by a single curvilinear relation with PVO2. The PVO2 at which lactate first rosores were depleted. Latent period for lactate rise, therefore, was nearly the same as that for development of tissue hypoxia.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of one-year specific aerobic gymnastics training on selected anthropometric and motor parameters in 6-11-year-old girls. 23 girls (average age in the beginning of the study was 8.04 ± 1.22 years) were involved in the study representing 2 different aerobic gymnastics sports clubs in Slovakia. The selected group completed their regular trainings and competitions for a period of one year. Measurements were taken in January 2019 and January 2020, in the middle of the preparatory period. Normality of distribution of the traits was examined using the Shapiro-Wilk test. Data were analyzed using Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Considering anthropometric parameters, there were significant changes (p≤0.01) in body height, body weight and BMI. Considering motor parameters, the mean values of straddle support hold and back extension endurance test increased significantly to the level of p≤0.05. The mean values of 4x10m shuttle run, standing long jump, modified push-ups, sit-ups in 60s increased significantly to the level of p≤0.01. No significant changes were observed in bent arm hang test or hanging knee tucks. On the other hand, the values of 1 leg stand with eyes closed and 2-min endurance shuttle run decreased insignificantly.

ABSTRACT Purpose This study evaluated the temperature of the pulpal chamber (PC) of teeth submitted to the light activation with and without bleaching gel, using different types of light sources. Materials and methods A digital thermometer, thermocouple K type, was located in the PC of human upper central incisors and the specimens received light activation from the following sources: G1—Laser, G2—Halogen light, G3—progressive intensity halogen lamp, G4—LED/Laser. The light was applied for 3 minutes, with and without the use of bleaching gel. The data were collected after every 30 seconds and analyzed by three-way ANOVA and Tukey's test. Results The mean values were: Use of the gel—with gel: 3.09a, without gel: 2.79b; Type of light source—G1: 0.60a, G2: 2.38b, G3: 4.16c, G4: 4.63d; Time of activation 30 seconds: 1.15a, 1 minutes: 2.20b, 1 minutes 30 seconds: 2.97c, 2 minutes: 3.44d, 2 minutes 30 seconds: 3.81e, 3 minutes: 4.09e. Conclusions The use of bleaching gel associated with light activation resulted in higher heating of the PC. LED/LASER light and progressive intensity halogen lamp showed highest levels of heating. The increase of irradiation time significantly increased the temperature.

Abstract Background: Insomnia is the most recognized sleep disorder. The time of the COVID-19 pandemic brings with it new challenges. During the COVID-19 pandemic, maintaining sleep hygiene is highly recommended as it helps to strengthen the immune system, and people infected with COVID-19 may be more prone to sleep problems.The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of insomnia among people aged 18-25 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: The study involved 302 individuals. It was conducted using Google Forms. The mean age of the respondents was 23 ± 1.84 years. The research instruments used in the study were the Athenian Insomnia Scale (AIS), the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and the author’s questionnaire concerning sociodemographic data. Results: Insomnia was found in 29.5% (n = 89) of the respondents. Higher mean values (8 ± 4.19) in the AIS were noted in the group of people with higher education and those currently studying. Moderate depression was demonstrated in 12.6% (n = 38) of the subjects. One third (30.1%; n = 91) of the respondents indicated greater sleep problems during the COVID-19 pandemic than before. Conclusions: Insomnia and depression are significant problems in the study group of 18-25 year olds. Therefore, psychological and psychiatric care should be extended to this group of young people.
