The Number-One Banjo Player

Bill Monroe’s opposition meant that for years Flatt and Scruggs would lack the coast-to-coast coverage of Opry station WSM’s 50,000-watt signal. Instead, they played stints at regional stations. By 1953, they once again were being heard over WSM radio, though not on the Opry. Through the second half of the 1950s, the factors for another level of stardom came together for the band—a new record company, repertoire, songwriting, performance, band lineup, presentation, publicity, and business operation. By mid-decade, Louise Scruggs was managing the band from the family home on Donna Drive in the Nashville suburb of Madison. Scruggs’s banjo work gained thoughtful, skilled followers such as Ralph Stanley and Sonny Osborne from country backgrounds and Mike Seeger and Eric Weisberg from the city side.

According to archivists a photograph can be both an illustrative material and a historical source. But still there is no handbook which can describe all aspects connected with photograpfic documentation. In the State Archive in Rzeszów (complex “Archiwum Podworskie Mierów-Jędrzejowiczów w Staromieściu”) there is the small separated collection of photographies. They present: portrait photos (Tytus Jan Mateusz hrabia Mier, Henryka z Mierów Komorowska) and watches with a miniature portrait of Jan hrabia Mier; postcards with photos of military manoeuvres; the portrait photo (Lubina z Rogoyskich Mierowa) and a photo for official documents (Jan Feliks Jędrzejowicz). The family of Mier which had Scotish and Calvinist roots and the family of Jędrzejowicz of Armenian and merchant origin were connected by the marriage contracted in 1878 in Vienna between Adam Jędrzejowicz (1847–1924), the son of Jan Kanty and Maria (maiden name Straszewska) from Zaczernie and Gabriela Felicja (maiden name Mier) (1850–1939), the daughter of Feliks and Felicja, divorced with Zdzisław Tyszkiewicz, the heir to landed property of Kolbuszowa. After the wedding Staromieście became their family home (now it is within the city limits of Rzeszów). Then Jan Feliks (1879–1942), the only son of this couple, managed the estate. Photographs provide valuable information both in the textual (notes connected with presented on photos persons, things, events) and illustrative stratum.

Born in the city during the 1950s and 1960s, Niseis and Sanseis [third-generation Japanese Brazilians] were expected to succeed as urban professionals, following the path of the older elite Nisei generation, who had advanced themselves as “special Japanese” in Brazilian society. By 1980, interracial marriage had become a norm among Japanese Brazilians, especially among men. They attempted to define themselves on their own terms, through the choice of careers, choice of marriage partners, and for certain political ideologies. While some educated Niseis, especially men, rigorously resisted what was expected of them as “Japanese” under the patriarchal rule for the family and “community,” many educated Nisei and Sansei women chose to remain single to become their parents’ caretakers and/or chose to work in Japan for dekassegui for the financial needs of their families. Meanwhile, the gendered pattern of Japanese Brazilians’ intermarriage has been reversed, with more women marrying out.

This paper presents an overview of the main features and nature of Tết, the Vietnamese lunar New Year festival, as it is currently experienced in Hồ Chí Minh City. It outlines a variety of social practices associated with Tết and suggests that it is through these that one can identify a ‘festive landscape’ in the city, within which a number of diverse places are made into and experienced as ‘meaningful space’ in the context of the Tết festival. The emphasis is on how the spatial practices associated with the festival constitute the lived experience of Tết by urban residents and on how this both transforms and connects various sites. Of particular importance here is the family home and how it is linked to the wider holistic experience of Tết, bringing together in a single place sacred and secular, public and private, and the production and consumption of place, in a social construction that is characterised as a heterotopia.

This chapter details Isaac Mayer Wise’s move at a large farm between North College Hill and Mount Healthy, and made it his principal residence. The farm lay nine miles north of Cincinnati. It is unusual, even in these days of instantaneous communications, for a clergyman to live at such a distance from the scene of his activities; in 1861 it must have been unprecedented. His congregation did not demur at Wise’s removing himself a distance of nine miles, and Wise, of whose endurance as a traveller there is ample evidence, presumably found driving to and from the city no strain. There is no information as to the role played by Mrs Wise in the decision, peculiarly within the concerns of a wife and mother, to move the family home. Family recollections suggest that the decision was that of the husband, and that the wife acquiesced reluctantly.

The early years of state television in Italy, which began transmission in 1954, have usually been viewed as crucial to the spread of mass culture through Italian society. In addition, these developments have essentially been seen in negative terms by historians and sociologists. This article explores these early years in detail for one, key, urban setting: Milan. Through an examination of the myriad and often hidden effects of television, the research attempts to draw out the contradictory and complicated impact of TV and its relationship with other media, the neighbourhood, the family, the home and daily life. The article also looks at the impact of one important quiz show in the 1950s and concludes with some reflections on the power of the media in the city in the 1990s.

Meret Oppenheim was a Swiss artist primarily known as a maker of Surrealist objects. Born in Berlin-Charlottenburg to a German father and Swiss mother, Oppenheim spent most of her youth in Switzerland until, at the age of eighteen, she traveled to Paris to become an artist. Although enrolled at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, Oppenheim preferred to work independently and, in 1933, her friendship with fellow Swiss artists Hans Arp and Alberto Giacometti led to an invitation to participate in the Surrealist Salon des Surindépendents. She subsequently became a part of the group focused around André Breton at the Café de la Place Blanche, continuing to exhibit with the Surrealists until returning to the family home in Basle in 1937, where she attended the School of Arts and Crafts for two years. A long period of depression and artistic crisis ensued during which Oppenheim destroyed much of her work. During the postwar period she became increasingly estranged from the remains of the Surrealist group, perceiving it as entrenched in the past. Her own solo career was belatedly developing and, with the advent of feminism, she was increasingly recognized as a role model for independent women artists. In 1975 Meret Oppenheim was the beneficiary of the Art Award of the City of Basle, and in 1982, the same year that she took part in Documenta 7 in Kassel, she was awarded the Art Prize of the City of Berlin.

In about 1920, Miss Edith Hodson set up a draper’s and haberdasher’s shop at the family home in front of her brother Edgar’s lock factory in the Midlands town of Willenhall. This article explains how the author became involved with the shop’s remaining stock and looks at some of the customers’ experiences of it. It goes on to describe the collection of clothes and related items, mostly comprising working-class women’s and children’s garments and accessories from 1920 to the early 1960s. The collection includes Utility pieces, quantities of haberdashery, and costume jewellery and cosmetics of the 1950s. A large archive has also been preserved of the shop’s paperwork (bills, invoices, bank statements, correspondence), warehouse catalogues, advertising pamphlets and women’s magazines. The ownership of the collection was passed to Walsall Museum in February 1993.

This article deals with the results of study of species content and basic peculiarities of beaked mites-Phytoseiidae in plant associations of one of the regional centers of Ukraine. The species composition and distribution of mites-Phytoseiidae (Parasitiformes, Phytoseiidae) in plantations of Brovary town of Kyiv region were determined. Fourteen species of 8 genera of phytoseiid mites were found. Index of their existing and relative biotope connection of each registered species to vegetation types and plant species were computed. The study was conducted according to the results of material treatment on the territory of the mentioned city from 25 species of plants (16 species of hardy-shrub and 9 of herbaceous vegetations). The studies of distribution of plant-living mites-Phytoseiidae were conducted separately for hardy-shrub and herbaceous plants). The collection of faunistic material was executed during the vegetation of periods of 2011 and 2013. Within the city the collection of the material was conducted with hardy-shrub plants and herbaceous type of vegetation along the streets, in parks and squares of Brovary city of Kyiv region, district center, one of the satellite-cities of Kiev, the capital of Ukraine. The study of species complexes characteristics of mites was conducted with usage of data calculated on the basis of frequency index (Is), degree of relative habitat confinedness (F) (Pesenko, 1982) and domination index Paliy-Kovnatski (Di) (Shitikov, 2003). Only on one species of plant (F=1) 6 species of mites-Phytoseiidae were found – T.сotoneastri on blue spruce, T. laurae – on common spruce, T. aceri – on ash-leaved maple, P. incognitus – on dog-rose, P. soleiger – on mulberry-tree, A. caudiglans – on sea-buckthorn. These species can be related to stenoecic. The mentioned species are stenotopic only in relation to the sample of plants from the plant associations of Brovary, as in other regions these species of mites can populate the other species of plants. The rest 8 species, being registered on two or more types of plants, are related to euryoecic. Among them there is a group of 6 species with “positive tendencies to population of plants”, owning the indicators of habitat confinedness 0<F<1: A. andersoni (0,92–0,96), A. rademacheri (0,85–0,96), N. herbarius (0,92–0,96), T. tiliarum (0,66–0,77), A. pirianykae (0,73–0,99), A. clavata (0,82–0,98). The rest species, E. finlandicus и K. aberrans, have the expanded range of indicators in relation to habitat confinedness (-0,71<F<0,55 и -0,16<F<0,88), that specifies on their ability to populate the big quality of species. E. finlandicus has the negative indicator of relative habitat confinedness in relation to the plants of herbaceous morphotype that serves confirmation of the ecological peculiarity of the species detected earlier. The data of relative habitat confinedness of mites to certain species of plants shows availability of stenoecic (T.сotoneastri, T. laurae, T. aceri, P. incognitus, P. soleiger, A. caudiglans) and euryoecic species (A. andersoni, A. rademacheri, N. herbarius, E. finlandicus, K. aberrans, T. tiliarum, A. pirianykae, A. clavata).
