The aim of the research was to evaluate the effect of the interaction of silicon, potassium, and nitrogen on the foliar area, the accumulation of these elements in the aerial part and the dry biomass in corn plants. The research was developed under hydroponic conditions in Jaboticabal Sao Pablo, Brasil using the 30A77HX hybrid. Two silicon concentrations were evaluated (0 and 2 mmol L−1); two concentrations of potassium (1 and 12 mmol L−1) and four nitrogen concentrations: (1, 10, 15, and 20 mmol L−1). A completely randomized design was used, with factorial arrangement 2 × 2 × 4 and three replications. The foliar area, the dry biomass and, nitrogen, potassium, and silicon content were determined. The application of silicon at a high concentration of K causes an increase in the accumulation of K, which is reflected in an increment of the total dry biomass in the plants of corn, while excess and a deficit of N diminish the accumulation of Si in the aerial part of the plant, which is more evident at a low concentration of K in the nutritious solution, affecting the accumulation of the total dry biomass.

The experiment was conducted to study the comparison on biomass production of fodder germplasm. Para (Brachiaria mutica Stapf.), German (Echinochloa crusgalli L.) and Dhal (Hymenachne pseudointerrupta C. Muell) grasses were cultivated in a completely randomized design (CRD). The whole area was divided into nine plots. The area of each unit plot was 6 m x 6 m. Number of cuttings were 16,000 /hectare where Plant to Plant distance was 16 cm and row and raw distance was 16 cm. Equal amount of organic and chemical fertilizer were applied in all cutting. The fodders were first harvested after 60 days of planting, second and third after successive 60 days of re-growth. The findings of the study showed that fresh biomass (p<0.01) and dry biomass yield (p<0.05) of three fodder germplasm differed significantly. Crude protein and organic matter yield were significant (p<0.01) only in the second cutting. German grass was showed significantly higher in CP and OM yield (p<0.01) at second cutting than other grasses. However, no significant effect on plant height was observed among three grasses. From the above findings it may be concluded that among the three fodder germplasm, German fodder showed best result in respect of biomass production. Abstract Mefenpyr-diethyl is a foliar-acting safener of the pyrazoline chemical group, and after its absorption, the metabolization and detoxification of herbicides occur in treated plants. Studies have demonstrated the protective effect of this safener for the herbicide fenoxaprop-P-ethyl in grass. Thus, this work aimed to evaluate whether a tank mixture of mefenpyr-diethyl has a protective response to haloxyfop-methyl in non-perennial bahiagrass. The experiment had a completely randomized design and was carried out in a greenhouse, using five replications with a 10x2 factorial scheme and ten doses of haloxyfop-methyl (0.00, 0.24, 0.49, 0.97, 1.95, 3.90, 7.79, 15.59, 31.28, and 62.35 g a.i. ha-1) in the presence or absence of a tank mixture of mefenpyr-diethyl (50 g a.i. ha-1). Phytotoxicity and electron transport rate (ETR) were evaluated at 7, 14, 21, and 28 days after application (DAA), in addition to plant height and dry biomass at 28 DAA. In general, phytotoxicity increased due to the higher levels of the herbicide haloxyfop-methyl. The application of mefenpyr-diethyl, in turn, provided lower levels of phytotoxicity, as well as lower reductions in ETR, height, and dry biomass when compared to untreated plants. These results show the safener action of a tank mixture of mefenpyr-diethyl on low doses of haloxyfop-methyl in non-perennial bahiagrass.

ABSTRACT Research focused on identify abiotic stress-tolerant genotypes is highly desirable since their use may reduce costs of soil and crop management and productivity losses. The aim of this study was to determine the behavior of 24 sugarcane genotypes under high levels of Al3+ and Mn2+ associated with low availability of mineral nutrients. The experiment was carried out under greenhouse condition in a 24 × 2 factorial scheme (24 genotypes × 2 treatments: with and without stress), and four replications in completely randomized design. In the treatment without stress plants were grown in a complete nutrient solution whereas in the treatment with stress a nutrient solution with a high acidity (4.0 ± 0.1) and 5% of its original concentration, as well as a high concentration of aluminum (60 mg L-1) and manganese (700 mg L-1) was used. The genotypes RB966928, RB855443, IACSP96-3060, SP81-3250, RB867515, CTC 21, RB965902, and IAC91-1099 had their biometric characteristics less affected by the stress, possibly due to the ability to continue the process of cell division and elongation and to maintain meristematic viable regions, hence they were considered as the most tolerant. On the other hand, the genotypes RB965917, CTC 15, CTC17, RB855536, CTC 2, CTC 20, and CTC99-1906 were the most sensitive to stress. Root system was the most affected by stress, with most genotypes showing more than 70% reduction in root biomass. No relationship was observed between tolerance level of genotypes and the maturation cycles.

ABSTRACT: This study evaluated the relative competitiveness of two common bean cultivars in coexistence with volunteer corn emerging at different times in different proportions of plants in the association. Firstly, for both beans and volunteer corn, the plant population was determined in which the final production of dry biomass becomes constant (24 plants pot-1). A completely randomized experiment design, with five replicates, was carried out in a 2×2×5 factorial scheme, involving two common bean cultivars (IPR Gralha and Fepagro Triunfo), two emergence times of volunteer corn plants (-7 and 0 days in relation to beans) and five proportions of plants in the association (100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75 and 0:100). At 35 days after bean emergence, measurements of plant height, leaf area and dry biomass of the aerial part of both species were measured. The competitiveness analysis was evaluated through diagrams applied to substitutive experiments and the use of relative competitiveness indices. The height of bean cultivars is reduced when volunteer corn emerges at the highest proportions and in advance. Early emergence of volunteer corn reduces leaf area from both bean cultivars while simultaneous emergence only reduces the leaf area of Triunfo. The dry matter biomass is lowered, due to the competition of the corn emerged before the bean, and the cultivar Gralha is more tolerant. In this way, the importance of the bean sowing in an area free from infestation of volunteer corn plants is verified.

The objective was to evaluate the effects of levels of compost and fertilization with NPK on growth and production of lettuce. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse, in a completely randomized design in a 6 x 2 factorial scheme, with four replications, considering six levels of compost (0; 25; 50; 75; 100 and 125 g plant-1) and absence and presence fertilization with NPK. The evaluated parameters were number of total and commercial leaves, mass of fresh commercial and total aerial part, mass of commercial and total dry aerial part, dry root mass and total dry mass. There was an interaction between the drilocomposite and NPK fertilization for the evaluated parameters, except for root dry matter. The fertilization with NPK increased the growth and production of lettuce when there was no application of the compost. Likewise, that the levels of this fertilizer increased the growth and production of lettuce only in the absence of NPK. The application of drilocomposite increases the growth of lettuce plants and can replace fertilization with NPK.

Soils destined for forest crops are often limiting with respect to boron (B) and in several eucalyptus crops boron deficiency has been found to be a common occurrence. The objective of this study is to evaluate biomass production, B accumulation and Ca/B ratio in eucalyptus cultivated under different conditions of soil, water availability and doses of B. To that end, an experiment was conducted using a completely randomized design with a 5 x 2 x 2 factorial arrangement consisting of five doses of B (0.00, 0.25, 0.75, 2.25 and 6.25 mg kg-1), two types of soil, namely a Dark Red Latosol (LE) and a Red-Yellow Latosol (LV), and two water tension levels (-0.033 and -0.010 MPa), with four replicates. After plants were grown, determinations were made of Ca and B contents as well as Ca/B ratios in different portions of the plants. Accumulation of B was obtained from the ratio of its contents to dry biomass in each plant portion. It was found that, under natural conditions, both Dark Red Latosol and Red-Yellow Latosol fail to meet the nutritional requirements for B in eucalyptus, potentially being limiting to that species. Overall, soil moisture influenced dry biomass production and accumulation of B only in the case of the more sandy texture soil (Red-Yellow Latosol), denoting that this factor is conditional on soil texture. Ca/B ratio results showed that application of B to the soil without a suitable supply of Ca can lead to an imbalance between these nutrients, with possible implications for plant growth and nutrition.

Four sesame genotypes viz., T6, SM4, SM7 and SM8 were verified with three levels of sulphur 10, 20 and 40 kg/ha including control. Factorial experiment was laid out in a completely randomized design with four replications. Biochemical parameters such as chlorophyll, nitrate reductase, amino acid and total sugar in leaves, total dry mass production, total nitrogen accumulation in seeds and seed yield increased with sulphur application up to 20 kg S/ha. Application of 40 kg S/ha had no significant benefit on biochemical parameters, dry matter and seed yield of sesame though 35S uptake in seeds increased with increasing sulphur levels till 40 kg/ha. The biochemical traits and nutrients uptake were superior in SM4 than other genotypes which resulted in the highest seed yield of SM4. Among the sulphur levels, 20 kg S/ha showed the maximum seed yield in all the genotypes. Therefore, sulphur @ 20 kg/ha can be recommended for getting maximum productivity of sesame genotypes.
