This essay aims to describe the dynamics at play in the field of industrial AI, where the significant efficiency potential is driving demand. There are rapid technological development and increasing use of AI technology within the industry. Meanwhile, practical applications rather than technical development itself are creating value. The primary purpose of the article is to spread knowledge to industry. It is also intended to form the basis of the Swedish innovation program PiiAs ongoing work around open calls and targeted strategic innovation projects. The basic approach taken is to investigate both industry demand for AI and how the supply of technology is developing. AI takes in a broad and dynamic range of concepts, but it should also be considered in the even broader context of industrial digitalisation. It is not just a question of technology development, but equally about application knowledge. Realising the full potential of AI requires the ability for change within individual companies, but also to handle exchanges and interactions in changing ecosystems. The article has been divided into two sections: The Market, in which we assess the development and the consequences on the factory floor; and The Technology, which provides a more in-depth understanding of the structures of industrial IT and machine-learning technology. The article concludes with four practical examples from the industry.

Today, each country has interest in digital economy and has established and implemented policies aimed at digital technology development and digital transformation for the transition to the digital economy. In particular, interest in digital technologies such as big data, 5G, and artificial intelligence, which are recognized as important factors in the digital economy, has been increasing recently, and it is a time when the role of the government for technological development and international cooperation becomes important. In addition to the overall digital economic policy, the Russian and Korean governments are also trying to improve their international competitiveness and take a leading position in the new economic order by establishing related technical and industrial policies. Moreover, Republic of Korea often refers to data, network and artificial intelligence as D∙N∙A, and has established policies in each of these areas in 2019. Russia is also establishing and implementing policies in the same field in 2019. Therefore, it is timely to find ways to expand cooperation between Russia and Republic of Korea. In particular, the years of 2020and 2021marks the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, and not only large-scale events and exchange programs have prepared, but the relationship is deepening as part of the continued foreign policy of both countries – Russia’s Eastern Policy and New Northern Policy of Republic of Korea. Therefore, this paper compares and analyzes the policies of the two countries in big data, 5G, and artificial intelligence to seek long-term sustainable cooperation in the digital economy.

ObjectivesTo identify current ‘gaps’ in clinical practice or therapeutic knowledge of the care of neonatal neurointensive care patients and to determine the impact healthcare technologies can have on improving outcomes.DesignThe Cambridge Institute for Manufacturing’s (IfM) roadmapping methodology.SettingCambridge, UK.Participants16 delegates were selected through professional networks. They provided coverage of academia and clinical skills, as well as expertise in neonatology, engineering and technology development.Main outcome measuresA ‘strategic landscape’ has been developed with ‘landmarks’ identified as ‘trends or drivers’, ‘patient pathway experience and unmet needs’ and ‘enabling project or resources’. Priorities were voted on by delegates.Results26 strategic ‘landmarks’ were identified, and of these 8 were considered ‘trends or drivers’, 8 ‘patient pathway experience and unmet needs’ and 10 as ‘enabling project or resources’. Of these, five priorities for the future of neonatal neurocritical care were identified by a voting process: real-time video monitoring for parents; individualised management of preterm infants in neonatal neurocritical care based on real-time multimodal monitoring; continuous electroencephalogram monitoring for early seizure diagnosis; neuroprotection: understanding basic mechanisms; and sleep measurement.ConclusionsThrough the use of the IfM methodology, a list of priorities has been developed for future work into improving the experience and possible outcomes of newborn infants with brain injuries and their families. While not an exhaustive list, it provides the beginning for a national conversation on the topic.

The metal-water system is attractive for propulsion and energy-conversion applications. Of all metals, aluminum is attractive due to its high energy density, relative safety, and low cost. Experimental studies provide new insight on the combustion and propulsive behaviors. The burning rate is found to be a strong function of both pressure and particle size. Furthermore, there is a wide scatter in the measured pressure exponents due to differences in particle size, pressure, pH, and equivalence ratio. A major problem with Al/H2O mixtures is incomplete combustion and poor impulses, thereby rendering Al/H2O mixtures unsuitable for practical applications. Efforts to improve the performance of Al/H2O mixtures have only met with moderate success. Although experiments have revealed these new trends, not much is offered in terms of the underlying physics and mechanisms. To explore the combustion mechanisms, theoretical models based on energy balance analysis have been developed. These models involve numerous assumptions and many complexities were either ignored or treated simplistically. The model also relies on empirical inputs, which makes it more a useful guide than a predictive tool. Future works must endeavor to conduct a more rigorous analysis of metal-water combustion. Empirical inputs should be avoided and complexities must be properly treated to capture the essential physics of the problem. The model should help us properly understand the experimental trends, offer realistic predictions for unexplored conditions, and suggest guidelines and solutions in order to realize the full potential of metal-water mixtures.

Recent research literature in product innovation has paid attention to the fact that technological discipline can lead to dominance by a knowledge base. Technology-intensive development is often partially and publicly supported and problems in finding a proper balance in technology development are in common interest. The objective of this study is to deepen the understanding of the dominance by technological knowledge base with reference to the sources, consequences and solutions of this overemphasis. Finnish publicly supported technology-intensive product innovation projects are studied. In the case studies, examples of the ‘perfect technology syndrome’ are identified and their sources are analyzed. This syndrome describes the intention to achieve the ultimate level in the technology development. Solutions proposed to the unfavorable consequences included alliances with organizations having complementary resources, careful pretesting of products with key partners and developing the technological products to specific target groups.

Abstract PtSe2 has received substantial research attention because of its intriguing physical properties and potential practical applications. In this paper, we investigated the optical properties of bilayer and multilayer PtSe2 thin films through spectroscopic ellipsometry over a spectral range of 0.73–6.42 eV and at temperatures between 4.5 and 500 K. At room temperature, the spectra of refractive index exhibited several anomalous dispersion features below 1000 nm and approached a constant value in the near-infrared frequency range. The thermo-optic coefficients of bilayer and multilayer PtSe2 thin films were (4.31 ± 0.04) × 10−4/K and (–9.20 ± 0.03) × 10−4/K at a wavelength of 1200 nm. Analysis of the optical absorption spectrum at room temperature confirmed that bilayer PtSe2 thin films had an indirect band gap of approximately 0.75 ± 0.01 eV, whereas multilayer PtSe2 thin films exhibited semimetal behavior. The band gap of bilayer PtSe2 thin films increased to 0.83 ± 0.01 eV at 4.5 K because of the suppression of electron–phonon interactions. Furthermore, the frequency shifts of Raman-active Eg and A1g phonon modes of both thin films in the temperature range between 10 and 500 K accorded with the predictions of the anharmonic model. These results provide basic information for the technological development of PtSe2-based optoelectronic and photonic devices at various temperatures.
