Is Personal Dignity Possible Only If We Live in a Cosmos?

The Catholic Church has increasingly invoked the principle of human dignity as a way to spread the message of the Gospel in the modern world. Catholic philosophers must therefore defend this principle in service to Catholic theology. One aspect of this defense is how the human person relates to the universe. Is human dignity of a piece with the material universe in which we find ourselves? Or is our dignity alien in kind to such a whole? Or does the truth lie somewhere in between? The metaphysics of creation properly locates the human being in the universe as a part, ordered to the universe’s common good of order and ultimately to God. Human dignity is possible only in a cosmos; that this is concordant with modern scientific cosmology is briefly defended in the conclusion.

The essence of the Catholic Church implemented in the modern world is of crucial importance for the understanding its mission towards the state, especially when developing appropriate civil attitudes. One sources of cognition is the historical reflection made on an analytical basis of Catholic media content. This article presents the discourse analysis of Gość Niedzielny (i.e., Sunday Guest), which was one of the most important Catholic publications in Poland, during the reconstruction of the Polish statehood. The pro-state mission of the Catholic Church was an expression of responsibility for common good, was nonpartisan and was connected with the promotion of values that condition the social order. It was believed that the condition of the state is determined by the moral form of its citizens and their level of involvement in social life. Christian values were though to secure and protect also the good of non-Catholic citizens. Here, the research and discourse analysis allows us to define the conclusions regarding contemporary relations between Church and the state in Poland. The key thoughts included in the publications of Sunday Guest, have contemporary application and their message is extremely up-to-date.

The Catholic Church believes that God has created every single person in His own image. God has implemented His own and personal image in the heart of our humanity. The political community, as seen by the Catholic Church, is meant to be the guardian and the witness of this indelible dignity offered and willed by God. The human person created in the image of God means that the purpose and objective of any political community is to defend and promote the “inalienable human rights”. The incarnation of Christ replaces the humanity in the heart of the project of God. By his incarnation, Christ elevates humanity to the dignity of being sons of God. For the Catholic Church, the political community is where one realizes the common good and so it facilitates living together. And by showing his compassion to every single creature, by recognizing the humanity of every single person, Christ leads the way to a civilization of love that can be achieved through the support of the political community.

The article of Volodymyr Moroz ―Normative character of the principles of Social doctrine of Catholic Church: an evolutional way of formation - is devoted to the analysis of Catholic Church’s Teaching over the human dignity. Author explores also the process of settling of the principles of common good, subsidiarity and solidarity in the Teaching of Catholic Church. Mentioned principles are investigated in the case of orientation to provide a reverence to transcendent human dignity. Author sums up that all three principles have normative character. That is to say the principles are called to guarantee certain coordination between the social reality and the verities, which were declared by the Social doctrine of the Church.

На примере трудов Фомы Аквинского рассматриваются онтологические и гносеологические аспекты католического учения о реальном присутствии Христа в таинстве Евхаристии. Автор определяет причины, по которым данное учение оказалось проблемным для католической теологии XX века, и осуществляет обзор дискуссий в католическом теологическом сообществе, котоыре были посвящены попыткам согласовать современные данные естественных наук с классической тридентской евхаристической доктриной реального присутствия Христа в Святых Дарах. Также анализируются сильные и слабые стороны этих попыток в контексте ординарного учительства Католической церкви. The article deals with the ontological and epistemological aspects of the Catholic teaching on the real presence of Christ in the sacrament of the Eucharist. It considers an explanation of these aspects in the writings of Thomas Aquinas and the reasons why this doctrine proved to be problematic for Catholic theology in the XX century. It reviews the discussions in the Catholic theological community, dedicated to modern attempts to reconcile the data of the natural sciences with the classical Tridentine Eucharistic doctrine of the Real Presence of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. We analyze the strengths and weaknesses of such attempts in the context of the ordinary teaching of the Catholic Church.

It is not within the purpose of this paper to appraise the historical significance which the Council of Trent held for the consolidation of Catholic doctrine on all the points of dogmatic and sacramental theology that had been put into question by the religious innovators. Nor shall we examine the role which its measures of canonical legislation played in the great process of spiritual and disciplinary renewal which eventually determined the position of the Catholic Church in the modern world. We propose rather to turn our attention to the great goal which the Council did not reach: the restoration of the one Respublica Christiana, of the Catholic unity which prior to the sixteenth century had been the only conceivable form of Christian religious existence. To the eye of the historian, it is true, the rift in Western Christendom appears quite obviously prepared by the developments of two centuries preceding Luther's challenge. The exile of Avignon; the great schism; the constitutional unrest of the conciliar epoch of Constance and Basel; the political realism by which Renaissance popes had sought above all to consolidate their position as Italian territorial rulers; the growth of the national states and national sovereignties; the ferment of humanistic ideologies—they all were alarming and distressing symptoms of the radical disintegration of mediaeval unity.

Relevance. On one hand Catholic schools have a tradition of caring for the weakest, of paying attention to each person and to his or her needs; on the other hand, factually, they do not differ from other schools in the aspect of integrating of people with disabilities, as shown by the sources studied. Why is there a discrepancy between the paradigm of Catholic education and its realization? Authors (J. M. Barton (2000), M. E. Blackett (2001), J. Ruškus (2002), D. A. Bello (2006), T. J. Long, M. J. Schuttloffl (2006), A. Galkienė (2008), M. Scalan (2009), C. Ch. Grima-Farrell (2012), who have studied inclusive Catholic education pay more attention to the pedagogical or administrative questions raised by inclusive education than to the philosophical basis of such a choice. As a matter of fact, the analysis of Catholic education under the aspect of inclusive education is a new thing in Lithuania. The practical use of the research is the evaluation of the situation, with the identification of the weak aspects of inclusive education in Lithuania. This would allow, in the future, modeling the organization of the education of pupils with special needs on the basis of the paradigm of Catholic education. Problem question for the research: what is the situation of inclusive education in Catholic schools in Lithuania? How is it related to the conception of inclusive education expressed by the documents of the Catholic Church? The aim of the research: on the basis of empirical research find out the tendencies of inclusive education in Catholic Schools in Lithuania according to the documents of Catholic Church. The objectives of the research: 1. Make a survey of scientific literature about inclusive education in Catholic schools. 2. Analyze the vision of inclusive education contained in Church documents and the Church’s declarations about persons with a handicap, their needs and their rights. 3. Analyze the inclusive education in catholic schools according to the documents of Catholic Church. Methods of the research: 1. Survey of scientific literature and research results on inclusive education in Catholic schools. 2. Analyze documents of the Catholic Church from Vatican II on Catholic education and persons with a handicap. 3. Case study on the education of people with disabilities in Catholic schools. The analysis of the understanding of inclusive education in Catholic schools shows that: 1. It is obvious that students with disabilities should be integrated – this is understood as a norm and as a natural consequence of the Christian understanding of the value of each human person. 2. We underline the qualitative aspect of inclusive education – how it can be organized while, at the same time, maintaining the major components of Catholic education. 3. Practical research shows that, although Catholic education is favorable to inclusiveness, there are many obstacles to its qualitative realization: there is often a lack of financial and human resources, and, as a result, a gap between theory and practice. The documents of the Catholic Church show very clearly the theological grounds of inclusiveness: the person is accepted for his/her own valuable and unquestionable contribution to the community as a human person, since the definition of a Catholic school corresponds to that of a Christian community in which various persons, joined by a common aim live out the values of the Gospel and collaborate. The empirical method was applied in 17 Lithuanian Catholic schools, all of which were analyzed not as multiple cases, but as part of one case-situation of Catholic schools in Lithuania. The empirical research findings reveal that inclusiveness often means that students with disabilities are accepted in the common educational process, but without adapted conditions necessary for a full participation in this process and for personal success. As far as religious education is concerned, students with special needs are integrated in common programs, but there is practically no adaptation or personalization of pastoral work or moral education. The role of the disabled person in forming a community with other students is enhanced, but the vertical, transcendental dimension of his/her mission, which is underlined by the theological approach of the documents, is not mentioned by the schools authorities. Comparison between declarations of the Church documents on people with special needs and the information received from the schools shows a discrepancy between the aim and the reality as evaluated by school authorities, which is more functional than philosophical.

The article presents the outline of the pagan and Christian ancient anthropo­logy that is interested in its relations to the cosmology. The antique philosophers describe a man as the microcosmos which belongs to the macrocosmos. Accor­ding to Aristotle’s metaphysics and the henological metaphysics, the human being occupies the lower place in the hierarchy of the universe. The Christian thinkers, based on the Bible and the Tradition, show the human being as God’s creature made according to the image and similitude of his Creator. The Church Fathers know the Jewish and gnostic anthropologies and they make a polemic on their doctrinal issues. Investigating the patristic anthropology is possible to apply the prosopography exegesis that underlines the interpersonal dialogue. That method indicates three levels of mutual relationships: the analogical and iconic one, the dyadic and dialogical level and the triadic one. The Church Fathers creating the metaphysics of person change their research from the cosmology to the theology and the anthropology. Justin investigates the personalist logos-anthropology. Ire­naeus of Lyon and Tertullian of Carthage show the personalist soma-anthropology. Clement of Alexandria elaborates the very interesting concept of the personalist eikon-anthropology that describes the human person as the divine Logos’ image, the living statue, in which dwells the divine Logos and the beautiful instrument fulfilled by God with the spirit. Origen of Alexandria, the Cappadocian Fathers and other Christian thinkers who examine that issue, will use Clément’s personal­ist eikon-anthropology in their future investigations. That concept helps to define the solemn Christological doctrine of Council of Chalcedon.

AbstractCatholic theologians after Trent saw the Protestant teaching about the remnants of original sin in the justified as one of the ‘chief ’ errors of Protestant soteriology. Martin Luther, John Calvin, Martin Chemnitz, and many Protestant theologians believed that a view of concupiscence as sinful, strictly speaking, did away with any reliance on good works. This conviction also clarified the Christian’s dependence on the imputed righteousness of Christ. Catholic theologians condemned this position as detracting from the work of Christ who takes away the sins of the world. The rejection of this teaching—and the affirmation of Trent’s statement that original sin is taken away and that the justified at baptism is without stain or ‘immaculate’ before God—is essential for understanding Catholic opposition to Protestant soteriology. Two Spanish Dominican Thomists, Domingo de Soto and Bartolomé de Medina, rejected the Protestant teaching on imputation in part because of its connection with the view on the remnants of original sin in the justified. Adrian and Peter van Walenburch, brothers who served as auxiliary bishops of Cologne in the second half of the seventeenth century, argued that the Protestants of their time now agreed with the Catholic Church on a number of soteriological points. They also drew upon some of their post–Tridentine predecessors to offer a Catholic account of the imputation of Christ’s righteousness. Nonetheless, the issue of sin in the justified remained a point of serious controversy.

Gaudium et Spes is a revolutionary document of Vatican II which can still inspire the Church now and in the future. This document is revolutionary in the sense that it deals with problems, issues and ideas that had never before become the agenda of any Council in the Catholic Church. Gaudium et Spes concretizes what John XXIII named aggiornamento, a process of contextualising the Christian heritage, through which the Church opens itself up to the modern world. This document is also revolutionary because it is entirely a product of the conciliar process of the Council itself.
